1B Nathan Wilder Still a Jay as Trade Deadline Passes

August 1st, 2012.

The July 31st Trade Deadline came and went today and the Toronto Blue Jays did not make a move. Many people expected that GM Ryan Stewart would move 1B Nathan Wilder who becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. It has been reported that GM Ryan Stewart and Wilder's representatives have been in almost constant contact attempting to hammer out a new contract for the slugging first baseman. Wilder really enjoys playing for Toronto and would like to come back according to sources close to the negotiations. The main sticking point of the talks seems to be the amout of money. Wilder wants a 4 year deal at about $20,000,000 per season (a $13,000,000 raise from his current salary) and the Jays are reportadely offering 4 years at $12,000,000.

GM Ryan Stewart was asked about the negotiations and why he didn't trade Wilder at the deadline "Well the negotiations really have changed that much since the last time we talked. We are still miles appart on the amount of money but both sides are staying positive and we still maintain that we would like Nathan back as a Blue Jay next season. We shopped him around at the deadline to see what kind of a return we could get for him but decided that we couldn't get a package in return that we were happy with and we would be left with a hole at first base for the rest of the year. We will do everything we can to get him resigned but right now it doesn't look good"

I think he has the Rookie of the Year Award pretty much wrapped up and with the numbers he has put up he deserves it. I do feel guilty though as I signed him from the Dominican Republic and I don't think any of the other teams are scouting foreigh countries. I have decided that I can only sign 1 foreign player a year and all the rest I will sign and release the rest and have them enter free agency so every team has a chance to sign them. I don't want to have a team full of foreign superstars and win everything too easily. What do you think?
Ya that seems fair. You should still give some of the ok foreigh players a chance to play on your team.

It could be very colse. Dave Chambers is 1-2 with a RF from Boston named Max Hughes who is also having a strong rookie campaign. It will definately be one of them who wins the Rookie of the Year Award in the American League.

RF Max Hughes - .279 18 HR 60 RBI
3B Dave Chambers - .280 23 HR 73 RBI

I think Chambers has a slight edge but it is definately going to depend on who has the better month of September.

September 1st, 2012.

The major league rosters expanded today and Blue Jays GM Ryan Stewart announced that they have recalled 6 players from AAA Syracuse for September. The Callups this year are:

SP Antonio Perez - 21-2 2.73 ERA (with AAA Syracuse)
CL Joseph Wilson - 3-2 14 SV 3.58 ERA (with AAA Syracuse)
3B Paul Wood - .279 6 HR 83 RBI (with AAA Syracuse)

CF Rick Bjork - .337 32 HR 135 RBI (with AAA Syracuse)
1B Javier Gomez - .277 22 HR 114 RBI (with AAA Syracuse)

GM Ryan Stewart on the callups "Well since we already clinched the division we really want to get a look at a couple of young players. We are especially interrested in 1B Javier Gomez and 2B Lorenzo Vazquez. If we cannot get deals done with 2B Stan Elliott and 1B Nathan Wilder they are our top prospects at those positions to fill the spots and if we don't go outside the organization they will get the bulk of the playing time next season. Let me reiterate that we are still in negotiations with both players to bring them back for next year and have made no decisions as of yet"

Recap:
The Toronto bats finally woke up after taking the last 2 games off. C Hugh Edwards homered and drove in 3 runs and CF Vitantonio Ardinghi went 3-4 and drove in 3 runs as the Jays scored 7 times in the 5th inning to take a commanding 8-2 lead. SP Bill Arkell stopped the bleeding for the Jays and went 7.2 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs. He did not walk anyone and struckout 6. CL Steve Perkins pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings strikingout 2 to finish off the Nationals in front of a capacity crowd at Rogers Center in Toronto, as the Jays captured their 3rd consecutive World Series Title.

GM Ryan Stewart commented on the feat after the game in the locker room "It is a great feeling, but you really have to respect the Washington Nationals they played very hard and with that young pitching staff (The average age is 25) they will be contenders for a long time. As for us we are going to celebrate tonight and then there will be a parade in the next few days and then it is back to business. We have a lot of loose ends to tie up before we get into next season"

Some of the Jays "loose ends" include 1B Nathan Wilder and 2B Stan Elliott both of whom do not have contracts for next year and are eligable to be come free agents if Toronto cannot resigh them.

Blue Jays Lose 2 Key Players to Free Agency

November 19th, 2012.

Free Agents filed today all all across the Major Leagues teams were notified by players of their intent to test the free agent market. No where was this felt more than in Toronto where the Blue Jays lost 2 key cogs in their offensive wheel. 1B Nathan Wilder and 2B Stan Elliott could not be resigned and were let go.

GM Ryan Stewart on losing the right side of his infield "It hurts us no doubt. but we are already at a payroll of $104,000,000 and our budget is $108,000,000 so we didn't have enough room to bring them back. They were both demmanding huge pay increases and we just were not able to accomodate them. We are going to have to look elsewhere to fill these holes for next year"

With the Jays so close to their budget it is unlikely that they will be in the market for a big name free agent so filling the positions will likely come via a trade or come from within the organization.

The Blue Jays also allowed MR Al Clark, MR Manual Villalobos, CF Dusty Witt and LF Marcos Rosario walk as free agents.

What ever happens in the offseason the Toronto Blue Jays team that takes the field in April will be a much different one team that won the World Series last season.
