I'm less interested in why Melhuse isn't in (he should be), but I'm far more concerned with why in the hell Stewart and his .196 OBP is hitting leadoff, Walker and his .481 OPS (yes sample size but still) is hitting 5th, and Buck's team leading .900 OPS is 7th.

Well Shannon does have a career 8-for-24 off John Lackey coming into the game (make it 8-for25), but that doesn't explain why he was there last night, and the game before, and the game before, and probably will be on Friday.

Kendall lost the benefit of the doubt, so maybe Stewart will lose it too by the end of April if he doesn't turn it on between now and then.

Since the Angels are on a 6-game losing streak in which they've scored only six runs, I don't know if it's more that they suck or our pitching rulz. Either way, anything that = A's win is good.

Stewart hasn't hit worth a damn since 2004. Dunno why the genius who hired Ken Macha was interested in SS.

I read somewhere that Kendall was making 13.4M this year, tops on the A's payroll. Pirates paying part of that figure?

Have you ever seen Kielty hit right handers? Putting faith in SS is a risk, but he's got a lot of upside for the money we're dishing out. If he's been a minus hitter because of the injuries, (and assuming he's healthy now) we get a 1 year bargain. If he's over the hill, then we wasted 1 million $$, plus some of Kielty's playing time.

He's 33 and coming off back to back lousy years at the plate. I checked his PECOTA projection for 2007, and it's replacement level, same as his performance the last two seasons.

As to injuries, Stewart played in 132 games (551 at bats) in 2005. Perhaps, he was battling knocks all year long and losing. I dunno.

I prefer Beane V.1 when the A's could hit.

It was more exciting when we had Giambi, Tejada, ect. That's because we had better hitting *and* better starting pitching then.

But we couldn't afford the better starting pitchers and hitters. We made up for it with better relief and fielding. It makes for more 4 to 3 games instead of the 6 to 5 games.

As for Stewart, he'll probably end up a .270/.330/.380 kind of player. -And I agree, that ain't so good for a left fielder. But as a plug in player that's good enough. There is always the chance that he'll bounce back to what he was before 2005. In fact, I'd think there are better odds of Stewart 'returning to form' than Kielty becoming a plus LF.

With Keilty you know what you are going to get though, and that's very very good performance vs LHP. That's why I really really wanted Frank Catalanotto or David Delucci to platoon with him, which would have given about an .875 OPS from left field.

IMO, Stewart is just a cheap flyer and he'll be gone by midseason if he continues to suck.

Word is DJ is coming back in a week and they might drop their 12th pitcher (probably Lenny DiNardo) for Johnson. Still, there should be absolutely no reason for Buck to sit EVER, so I would hope Johnson only gets at bats when someone not named Buck is getting a rest.

I'm very much hoping that if this is the case, Dinardo stays and Witasucks is traded instead. Dinardo is younger, has upside, and has been very good (save for the Giambi HR) this year.

Both Witasick and DiNardo have only been in 3 games this year. At this point it's probably a tossup, but hopefully you're right about who's leaving.

It's quite an accomplishment to make the A's O look impressive.
