Looked like it to me. I thought they were going to try some new ideas for this kind of situation?

Yeah, a chip in the ball they used in Peru at an age-level (under 17?) World Championship and there was a possibility it would be used in Germany - but FIFA said it didn't work so they scrapped it (they also used an artificial surface for the first time).

Argentina hold on for a 2-1 win, although if Abbondanzieri hadn't saved with his legs in the first half I think we might have had a different result.

Tomorrow is the upside down flag match... Netherlands vs. Serbia and Montenegro...

I'm really looking forward to Monday & Tuesday, first games for Italy & Brazil.

am I the only one who thinks that Ivory Coast outplayed Argentina? If it wasnt for that 15-20 minute stretch and subpar goalkeeping it was their game.

and I find it somewhat humorous that Serbia and Montenegro are competing with the country about to split in half. I wonder which'll get to keep the old Yugoslavian records, and how they'll do next World Cup.

I don't know about that. After Argentina scored their 2nd goal, I think they started playing more defensive. In the 2nd half they pulled their two strikers.

They did that against England in a friendly a bit back, took the lead then took their foot of the pedal but England cameback to 2-2 and then 3-2 and Argentina found it hard to step back up again. It's a dangerous tactic because it is hard to slow down and go defensive then if you let the other team in you have to step up again, England always do it instead of just killing the opposition off.

Matches today were a bit of a let down.

I would be jumping off the English bandwagon today as fast as I possible would bail out.
They looked awful today and they are done, they will make it past the groups but not much farther than that.
I do not see them going beyond the round of 16.

Sweden looked bad too. A three and out for them.

The last match today was by far the best but Argentina held on for three points and a boost of national confidence after a miserable 2002 campaign.

I dont think they looked bad, they just couldn't finish against a frustrating stuck-in defense and a goalie that pulled out the game of his life.

It moght be a little early to write them off. Gerrard is playing through an injury; Owen is regaining his fitness; Rooney didnt play. Englands defense didnt let in a goal. Jury is still out IMO

Just getting a chance to watch ARG-IC and Argentinas 2nd goal should have been disallowed...it looked like offside to me.

Just returned home after an evening of sport watching and beer drinking at my mates house.

So far: Dissapointed in England... they need to sort themselves out...hopefully this was just a "clear out the cobwebs" game for them
Argentina vs. Cote d'Ivorie was a good game which I really enjoyed. Those African's looked really dangerous although Argies were able to cut through theor defence at will but just unable to finish.

Didn't watch any other games am looking forward to the Netherlands game and POrtugal vs. Angola.

If Dellacamera does know anything about football, he keeps it well hidden.

I pretty much agree on all points here. I thought the refs were pretty bad in the last two games. The calls were bad both ways in the Argentina match so I can't say there was any bias but still I hope they don't do any of the major matches. I did sense an anti-T&T bias. I really hope thats not part of the racism there and it was just some missed calls. Not sure where those refs were from.
Now I need to talk my boss into letting me put a TV in the office for the US match. Or maybe close up for the day with the hurricane coming. Then I can head back over to the international student center and watch on the 120 inch screen and hear some serious soccer talk.

I'm lucky, the coverage so far in NZ has a single English announcer. Quality

Always thought there was something that didn't sound "proper" when watching football on ESPN and listening to commentators with an American accent. and thank god we don't have that idiot Tommy Smythe with a Y or whatever his name is. I would have to watch the games on mute if he was commentating.
