So how does Aurelio Herrera match up with Cole? Is it a fight he should win?

Exciting card!
October 3, 1912
Title Fights FLY - Jimmy Wilde (UR/2) (15-0)(pre) scored a MD12 over Percy Jones (UR) (10-1)(pre) for his 5th defense of the CBU Flyweight Title. This was by far Wilde's toughest outing but it should have been a UD. Jones was slightly ahead after 5 but then Wilde took over winning the next three rounds and then dropping Jones in the 9th. Jones dropped Wilde in the 11th but then Wilde rallied to win the 12th. I had it 115-111, the official judges saw it 116-111/113-113/115-111. HW - Tommy Dugan (81/63) (18-12) scored a KO6 over Bill McKinnon (53/78) (17-9) to win the AABU HW title. McKinnon dropped Dugan twice in the first round only to go down twice in the second round. The two traded bombs over the next three rounds before McKinnon went down for good in the 6th. I had it 46-45 McKinnon at the stoppage. Other Fights HW - Carl Morris (25/13) (17-0) TKO8 Jem Roche (106/120) (8-8-3) 69-60 at the stoppage (both at pre ... Dugan down 6 times before the fight was stopped) MW - Kid Locke (47/47) (18-7-2) DRAW10 Joe Thomas (48/48) (19-8-5) |

Title Fights FW - Johnny Dundee (8/8) (17-0) (pre) remained unbeaten with a TKO10 over Charlie Griffin (26/37) (19-9) for his third defense of the CBU FW title. Close fight but the difference was a cut Griffin suffered in the 3rd. It was reopened 5 times before the doctor finally recommened the fight being stopped. I had it 86-86 at the stoppage. BW - Nunc Wallace (23/18) (19-8-2) handled the inexperience Jim Kendrick (UR) (10-1) (pre) with ease in route to a KO6 win for his second defense of the CBU BW title. Kendrick was down in the 4th and then stayed down in the 6th. I had it 48-46 at the stoppage. Other Fights HW - Luther McCarty (UR) (10-0) UD8 George Paris (club) (6-11-7) 80-70 (both at pre for this club fight, McCarty moved to main, Paris moved to prime) WW - Terry Martin (5/5) (24-5-1) UD10 Charles McKeever (29/38) (16-14) (Martin's EBU title was not on the line) WW - George Lavigne (6/6) (33-16-2) KO3 Jimmy Mitchell (66/69) (12-14-1) LW - Billy Willis (76/55) (18-7-2) TKO10 Frank Steele (35/56) (18-8) |

Title Fight WBO - Jack Johnson (CH) (46-3) scored an easy TKO12 over Larry Foley (5/7) (33-10-3) for his 5th defense of the WBO HW title. Johnson opened a cut over Foley's left eye in the second and the cut eventually stopped the fight in the 12th. There were no knockdowns. I had it 109-101 for Johnson at the stoppage. Title Tourney LHW - Jack Dillon (1/1) (27-1) got back to his winning ways with a UD12 over Alfred Kearns (9/10) (15-2-3) (pre) in the first round of the WBA LHW title tourney. There were no knockdowns or cuts and Dillon dominated the fight. I had it 120-108 as did two of the official judges, the 3rd gave Kearns a pity round and had it 119-109. Other Fights MW - Johnny Wilson (UR) (11-0) TKO5 Lupie Carranza (97/98) (7-6-3) 40-36 (both at pre) LW - Willie Ritchie (16/15) (21-4-4) MD10 Paddy Smith (106/110) (13-12-2) HW - Frank Mantell (23/13) (24-8) MD10 Bill "Stroke Me" Squires (88/95) (17-20-1) 96-92 Mantell (Mantell's EBU title was not on the line, Mantell down twice) HW - Jeff Clark (28/11) (17-3-1) UD10 Peter Courtney (37/45) (22-7-1) I have no explanation for Mantell and Clark's jump in the ratings. |

Title Fights WW - Kyle Whitney (4/4) (22-6-5) scored a UD12 over Battling Hurley (12/18) (18-3-1) for his 3rd defense of the USBA WW title. Hurley's was cut above the left eye in the 3rd and below it in the 10th. Whitney built a big lead early in the fight, then survived a flash knockdown in the 8th and a furious rally by Hurley down the stretch. Whitney won the 12th round. I had it 116-113, the official judges had it 116-113/115-114/116-112. LW - Fighting Dick Hyland (108/80) (17-8) scored a MD12 over Arthur Douglas (39/81) (18-8-1) to win the AABU LW title for the second time. With the win he probably becomes the LBA's lowest ranked champion. Hyland dominated the middle portion of the fight and then held on down the stretch to get the win. There were no knockdowns or cuts. I had it 115-113, while the official judges saw it 116-112/114-114/115/113. Other Fights LW - Jake Karcher (UR) (10-0) DQ8 Kid Farmer (club) (10-24-3) 67-65 (karcher at pre in this club fight, Farmer was penalized a point in the 5th) BW - Jimmy Gorman (25/20) (22-3-1) TKO2 Charley Parton (23/28) (17-9-1) LHW - Battling Levinsky (15/13) (17-1) UD10 Charlie Haghey (38/44) (20-9) (levinsky at pre) WW - Eddie Shevlin (44/41) (17-2-1) UD10 Tommy Howell (45/52) (12-4-2) (howell at pre) |

Title Fights MW - Mike Gibbons (CH) (22-0) scored a tough TKO15 over Al Rogers (12/18) (21-3-1) for his first defense of the IBF MW title. Gibbons had his hands full with Rogers for most of the fight. Rogers was cut over the left eye in the 5th and it seemed to take away some of his steam. Gibbons was taking control of the fight down the stretch and the ref stopped it with 2 minutes left when the cut was reopened for the third time. I had it 137-133 at the stoppage as did one judge. The other two judges had it 135-133. With the win Gibbons takes 4th place alone for the most consecutive wins breaking away from Young Peter Jackson and Joe Jeannette. He will need 4 more to tie Jack Dillon for 3rd place. WW - Ted "Kid" Lewis (7/7) (20-3-1) scored an easy UD12 against overmatched Sid Burns (UR/50) (10-2-3) (pre) for his 5th defense of the CBU WW title. Lewis dominated the fight throughout and knocked Burns down in the 11th. I had it 119-108, the official judges saw it 118-109/119-108/116-111 ... the last judge was Burns' uncle. Other Fights FW - Leo Dobbins (club) (8-18-2) UD8 Jack Greenstock (UR) (8-1-1) 76-75 Dobbins (Greenstock at pre for this club fight) HW - John Matthews (112/55) (10-8-2) TKO1 John L. Sullivan (22/56) (41-11) (Sullivan broke his hand after knocking Matthews down in the first) WW - Jack Willis (43/39) (17-11-3) MD10 Andy Watson (51/59) (15-9-4) BW - Johnny Murphy (2/2) (23-5-2) TKO10 Jimmy Dunn (57/60) (13-11-4) |
