Cleveland finished the first month of the season with a surprising 1.5-game lead over the White Sox and Tigers. The Browns are 2 games back, as are the Yankees. Preseason favorite Washington is a game under .500 and 3 games back of the Indians.

Thanks to the always fantastic pitching of Remmy Paul and Frank Smith and an offense that has remarkably scored the most runs in the majors, Brooklyn leads the NL by a game over the Phillies. Pittsburgh is just 2.5-games back, but they lost starting pitcher Bill Tschetter until mid-June with an arm injury. The Reds are on a 6-game winning streak, which they needed just to get back to .500.

Yankees outfielder Jimmy Ditty was named BOTM in the AL. It was the first BOTM Award for Ditty since June 1939, almost 8 years ago. Of course, the Schnozz lost 4 years to WWII, more than most players. He left after back-to-back 2nd place finishes on the AL homerun leaderboard, and then the Yankees were coming off many AL pennant and WS championship seasons. Now, the Yankees are still trying to recover from the devastating losses caused by the war, while Ditty leads the AL with 9 homeruns.

Speaking of homeruns, Ditty is on pace for a robust 51 longballs, which would be by far a new AL record. In the NL, two players are tied with 10 homers after just one month of the season - Philadelphia 1B Lonny Arrendale and Cubs leftfielder Will Groaning. There have been 302 homeruns hit in the majors this season, and that is already nearly 1/4th of total homeruns hit in all of last season.

In an unfortunate incident on April 23rd, Indians outfielder Al Jackson was tested by Athletics players, who yelled racial slurs and invectives from the dugout. Jackson, who is now batting 3rd for the Tribe, went 1-for-4 with a run scored in a 3-0 Cleveland victory. The Indians swept the 3-game series. On April 26th, Browns players wanted to protest their first meeting with Jackson and nearly did not play the game. The American League president stepped in and warned the team that if a strike occurred, any player involved would be suspended. Browns manager Smally Becker denied there was any talk of a strike, and the Indians went on to win that game 4-3. Jackson went 0-for-3 with a walk on that day, but in the final game of the series, Jackson went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in a 6-5 Indians loss. After one month, Jackson is hitting .264 and leads the AL with 27 RBI.

This month Vic Gorin moved up into the #8 spot in Career Strikeouts leaderboard.

He will retire at the end of the season but if he stay's focused and healthy has a shot at moving up to #6 spot.

Washington passed the Indians and White Sox, finally claiming 1st place in the AL after a 10-3 start to May. The White Sox have also been hot, and they rest just a half-game back. The defending AL champion Browns are also just 2 games back.

The Phillies moved back into 1st place, a game ahead of the Dodgers and Pirates. Meanwhile, the Reds are just 3 games back, but the Braves continue to slump badly. Boston is already 13 games out with a miserable .282 winning percentage. Rumor has it that manager Coot Miller's job is in serious jeopardy.

Out of over 22,000 fans at Chicago's Comiskey Park on May 2nd, it was estimated that nearly 9,000 of the fans were black, attracted to the game because of Indians outfielder Al Jackson. Jackson went 0-for-4, but the Indians won a fantastic pitcher's duel bewteen Trent Roberts and Chicago's Earl Boyd by a score of 1-0. As fans headed for the exits after this final game of the series, the organist played "Bye, Bye, Blackbird," an obvious jab at Jackson.
