MLB news: Sept. 28 -- Brewers claim second straight NL Central crown

Starting pitcher Robert Gasser went the distance with a two-hitter in a 9-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals as the Milwaukee Brewers sewed up their second straight National League Central Division title.
The Brewers (91-69) lead the Cardinals by three games with just two contests left in the regular season.
Milwaukee also is on track to earn home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs, sitting a game in front of the East Division-leading Marlins by a game.
The Brewers, who have made the postseason for three consecutive seasons, made the World Series in 2028, only to fall to the Seattle Mariners.

MLB news: Sept. 28 -- Phillies will return to postseason for first time since 2023

A 6-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves assured the Philadelphia Phillies a wild-card berth in the upcoming National League playoffs.
At 86-74, the Phillies trail the Miami Marlins by five games in the National League East Division with just two games remaining in the regular season.
Philadelphia could steal with top seed among the wild cards from the Cardinals should it win its final two games and the Cardinals, who are playing the NL Central-leading Brewers, drop their final two.
The Phillies won the season-series from St. Louis 4-2.
Philadelphia last reached the World Series in 2022, when it lost to the Houston Astros.
The Phillies last won it all in 1980 with a defeat of the Kansas City Royals.

MLB news: Sept. 29 -- Mariners clinch American League West crown

With an 8-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, the Seattle Mariners have sewed up the American League West Division championship.
The playoff berth is the third in the last four years for Seattle, all of those campaigns featured division championships.
The Mariners (90-71) lead the Los Angeles Angels by two games with just one contest left in the regular season.
Seattle will face the No. 3 wild card, the Boston Red Sox, in a best-of-three wild card series.
The Mariners made the World Series for the only time in their history in 2028, and they defeated the Milwaukee Brewers to win it all.

MLB news: Sept. 30 -- Washington claims final playoff berth

Despite losing their regular-season finale 5-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Washington Nationals were able to secure the final berth in the National League playoff field.
Washington finished the season 85-77, six games in back of the Miami Marlins in the National League East Division.
But that put them one game ahead of the defending World Series champion Colorado Rockies for the final NL wild card.
The wild-card berth is the second in a row for the Nationals.
They will face the NL West champion San Diego Padres (93-69) in a three-game wild-card series.
Washington has only reached the World Series one time, in 2019 when it defeated the Houston Astros.
