Non-Roster 1966

From the 2/24/66 edition of The Sporting News.

Love the line about Spahn at the very end. Explains, among other things, the phantom "#115 Warren Spahn" on the early versions of the 1966 Topps baseball cards second series checklist:

Sparky Anderson

George "Sparky' Anderson, a future hall Of Fame Manager" was known for his brains and baseball smarts even as a journeyman minor leaguer
as this Dell's 1959 Baseball Stars magazine article attests. He's pictured here with the AAA 1958 Montreal Royals.
He did get his only shot at the major leagues that coming season after he was traded by the LA Dodgers to the Phillies.
He set an unusual record for the '59 Phils, which still stands. He played in more games than anyone in baseball history for a one season career.
Sparky played in 152 of the Phillies' scheduled 154 games that year in his only time in the majors as a player.

Steve Jones - 1969 - Royals?

In my eagerness to hope to cross players off my white whale list, I've been known to let my eyes deceive me. To me this is Steve Jones with his 44 IP of glory while in his only season with KC. (Courtesy of Topps Vault) Might someone give me a nod of support? Thanks!

Yes sir...and thank you. My head was pounding trying to figure out the naming convention for this batch what with a 'Blackwell" to a "Jorgenson" then to a "Bladt"....

Tom Sullivan - 1922 Phillies

I'm looking for a photo or good sketch of pitcher
Tom Sullivan, whose only time in the majors was
a brief stint with the 1922 Phillies.

Some Real "Cameos" In Topps Vault Snow Day

Dennis Blair (1974) - during his five game farewell with the '80 Padres (and I'm not sure he's wearing his own uniform based on the lettering just barely visible on his back)

Mike Buskey (1977) - six games at shortstop for the '77 Phils

Rick Jones (1976) - thirteen games with the '77 and '78 Mariners

Ricardo Joseph (1964) - seventeen games with the '64 A's

John Bateman (1963) - at the end with the 1972 Phillies

Pirates' sleeves

I've noticed quite a few Pirates TV photos from the early '70s in which the players have a strip of black material on their shoulder where a patch might normally go. (See Dave Giusti below as an example). They seem to differ in size from player to player and seem to be affixed loosely. I know they wore a small number 21 in a circle in honor of Clemente during 1973 - could these have been meant to cover them up until their "official" debut perhaps on opening day? Seems it would have been easier to simply put them on the day before. If anyone can help explain this, it would be appreciated.

Topps Vault

Is there anywhere to see the latest offerings from Topps Vault other than Baseball Birthdays? Several folks here seem to have new photos several days before Baseball Birthdays puts them up. Thanks.
