That made me smile.

When you add the Negro Leaguers I see you are going with a FA draft--would you consider placing some players in the cities they were associated with when playing (ex. Rube Foster with a Chicago club or something like that.)?

Sorry, but I don't think I will do it that way, seth.

That would limit me too much, if I have to put Foster in Chicago and Paige in Kansas City and so on.

I want to place them according to draft needs and and not be restricted to them playing for certain cities.

The important thing is to get them in the league.

I will have the first mid-season draft soon.

I am in the process of drafting Negro stars.

I will add one player to each of the rosters.

I also intend to add one more to each team at the beginning of the second season.

I will add 2 Negro stars each season until I run out of quality players.

The initial draft will be in reverse order based on team records at the 77 game mark...mid-season.

Sorry, haven't had time to play any games...I have been researching all the great Negro stars to edit their ratings for inclusion in the game.

I will soon have a draft and add one Negro great to each team...probably will try to fill a team need first, unless the player is just too good to pass up.

Draft will be in reverse order based on current standings.

It should be today or tomorrow.

I have 4 more players to create...that will give me 32 to choose from in the initial draft.

They will be ready to play in the next scheduled games.

This, to me, has been my favorite part of OOTP: Learning about areas of baseball history that were previously unknown. Anything that makes me a better, more knowledgable fan is a good thing in my book!

You are right, you can really expand your baseball knowledge, if you really get involved in OOTPB and try to be accurate with ratings. I have really learned a lot about the Negro Leagues and Minor Leagues 1900-1950.

It is a shame, but the old Negro Leagues didn't keep very good records and it is hard to evalulate players. The main criteria I use is what white players that competed against them had to say about the talent level, how the Negro players did in head-to-head exhibitions against white teams...they did very well because they were very talented and very motivated to perform well against the white players...what Buck O'Neill had to say as he saw, played with and managed a lot of the black players...he seems to give an objective view of their talent...and also how they did in the Winter Leagues and Mexican League.

The best source: The Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues edited by James Riley (new edition 2001).

But there seems to be some embellishment of the truth, when oldtimers of any race talk about the old days and old players. Sometimes the "good old days weren't as good as we think".

Here is the first draft of Negro League players for the Alltime Allstar Association.

I will do another one at the beginning of the next season and also at mid-season...and will continue to do it until I use up all of the Negro stars.

Since the St. Louis Browns had the worst first half record, the AL got the first pick. The NL will get the first pick in the next draft.

Drafting was in reverse order of the standings. The AL and NL will alternate picks. The Pirates and Giants are tied for first place in the NL. Since Pittsburgh leads New York 5-4 in their season series, New York was awarded the earlier pick. Head-to-head competition will be the tiebreaker.

I drafted on the basis of team needs:

1. St. Louis (A) Josh Gibson C
2. Chicago (N) Turkey Stearnes OF-1B
3. Boston (A) Oscar Charleston OF-1B
4. Cincinnati (N) Smokey Joe Williams P
5. Cleveland (A) Willie Wells SS
6. Boston (N) Buck Leonard 1B
7. Philadelphia (A) John Henry Lloyd SS
8. Philadelphia (N) Biz Mackey C-1B
9. Washington (A) Bullet Joe Rogan P
10. Brooklyn (N) Cristobel Torriente OF
11. Chicago (A) Dick Lundy SS
12. St. Louis (N) Satchel Paige P
13. Detroit (A) Hilton Smith P
14. New York (N) Martin Dihigo 2B-IF-OF
15. New York (A) Rube Foster P
16. Pittsburgh (N) Leon Day P

It is like trying to judge the PCL of the open era or the IL when Dunn's Baltimore clubs were at thier peak. I think we actually tend to overstate some of the players abilities too. Stachel, Jackie and Monte Irvin all put up good to very good MLB numbers. But Sam Jethroe, Ray Noble didn't--I have for my dynasty a list of 35 guys who played in the Negro Leagues/MLB in the late 40's early 50's, and most of them, well, are marginal MLBers. We'd like to believe Gibson would have put up Ruthian numbers, but would it have been so bad if he was just Bill Dickey at his peak? I'm not saying they weren't HoFers or All-Stars--but I think in OOTP we give them an extra edge for what happened to them in real life. Myth clouds our ability to judge.

How did you set the ratings for the Negro stars in your league?

Did you spend much time researching them?

If you get the time, I would be interested in seeing what ratings you gave them...just to compare them to what I came up with...just do a few of the superstars.

Well, I'm about 70 seasons from using them--but I've been doing a little digging. I'll send you something this weekend about who and what I think I'm going to use.
