1951 - 5/16 THRU 5/31

5/16 day off

5/17 PHI @ DET: WIN 7-6 Bud Ulrich gave up 3R (2ER) in 3.2IP. The win went to Lloyd Wyman (4-1, 4.76) who pitched a hitless 9th. Ellis Weeks gave up 1R in 3IP. The loss went to Jim Lindros who recorded no outs and gave up back to back HRs to Kress and Ormiston in the bottom of the 9th. Top A's batters were 3B Bud Ayers (2 for 4, 1BB, 1HR), 2B Ace Habermehl (3 for 5, 1TRPL) & CF Todd Walker (3 for 5, 1R, 1DBL). For us, John Dirtbag Degal got POG going 2 for 4, 2R, 2RBI, 1DBL, 1HR. Ray Kress went 2 for 5, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. Luther Ormiston went 2 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1DBL, 1HR.

Top A's hitter was 3B Bud Ayers who went 4 for 5, 2R, 1RBI, 1TRPL. For us, Carl Sandoz got POG going 3 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1HR. That HR gave us the go ahead run. Dennis Kitterman went 3 for 4, 1R, 1BB, 1DBL. Luther Ormiston went 2 for 3, 2R, 1BB, 1DBL.

5/19 PHI @ DET: WIN 5-3 Corky Stell (3-6, 4.71) got the win giving up 3R in 6.1IP. Lloyd Wyman pitched a hitless 9th for his 5th save. Danny Mau (6-2, 3.25) gave up 5R in 7.1IP. Top A's hitter was RF Peaches Badeau (2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI). For us, Carl Sandoz got POG going 2 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1HR. Once again, Sandoz is clutch giving us the go ahead runs... he's not a power hitter so these past two games have been a nice effort. Ray Kress went 1 for 4, 1HR.

5/20 DET @ WSH: loss 1-7 Hal Andrew (6-5, 4.56) got yanked after 4IP after giving up 7R (5ER). Chris Frays (6-4, 2.79) only gave up 1R in 8IP for the win. Matt Perly went 2 for 4.

5/21 DET @ WSH: loss 7-8 Bud Ulrich gave up 5R in 7IP, but the loss went to Don Vonkitzing (0-1, 3.46) who was unable to hold in the 8th. Van Melbourn gave up 5R in 5.1IP and had to leave the game with a back injury. The win went to Raul Velazquez (4-2, 3.22) for pitching a scoreless 2.2 in relief. Top WSH hitters were 2B Dean Parente (2 for 5, 2R, 4RBI, 1DBL, 1HR), C John Fine (1 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR) & SP Van Melbourn (2 for 3, 1R). For us, Dennis Kitterman was an awesome 5 for 5, 3R, 1TRPL. Dave Castenda went 3 for 5. Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 3R, 2RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Matt Perly went 2 for 3, 1R, 5RBI, 2BB, 1DBL, 1HR.

5/22 DET @ WSH: loss 1-9 Roy Wolfe (6-5, 4.46) gave up 7R in 6IP for the loss. Eric Slater (6-3, 4.34) gave up only 1R in a CG win for POG. Top WSH hitters were CF Delmar Yordy (3 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB), 1B Chris Anderson (2 for 4, 3R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1TRPL), & 2B Dean Parente (2 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL, 1TRPL). 5/24 BOS @ DET: WIN 2-1 Hal Andrew (7-5, 4.18) allowed only 1R in a CG win for POG. Cort Nagel pitched 7.1 shutout innings, but their closer Billy Hyberg (1-3, 1.96) blew a save op in the 9th compliments of a 2R HR by Kress. Top Sox hitter was RF Ben Hargey who went 2 for 3, 1HR. Hal held the Sox to 4 hits. For us, Steve Zucal filled in at 2B and went 1 for 2, 1R, 2BB. Ray Kress subbed in mid way into the game and went 1 for 2, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR.

Nippy Schnaubert gave up 9R in 4.1IP, however the loss went to Smiley Crago (2-1, 3.94) for giving up 2R in the 7th & 8th. Top Sox hitters were CF Cy Helbig (2 for 3, 2R, 2RBI, 1BB, 1HR), RF Ben Hargey (2 for 3, 2R, 1BB, 1DBL), & SS Tequila Allen (2 for 5, 5RBI, 1TRPL). For us, Isaac Mitchell got POG thanks to a PH grandslam in the 5th that put us in the lead for good. Dave Castaneda went 3 for 6, 1R, 1DBL. Ray Kress went 1 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Dennis Kitterman went 3 for 5, 1R.... basically everyone hit well except for Sandoz and Wolfe.

STANDINGS
26-25, 5th in the AL, 9.5GB Philly, 8-6 in the last two weeks.

BAD NEWS
-We swept the A's and still lost ground as our starters remains inconsistent.
-Ormiston is still only hitting .236 and Degal (.167) is making it hard to sit Smokey. I think I'll have to see about increasing Smokey's starts against RHP as he's hitting .304.

GOOD NEWS
-Ray Kress was name Player of the Month - He hit .303 in 99 AB, with 12 homers and 26 RBI. That AVG is a bit low for him, but the 12 HR is nice as he's only 3 away from jumping on the career leaderboard.
-Rollin Fish is evolving into a decent hitter. He's one of those like Castaneda where I felt that I didn't care if he couldn't hit, I just loved his glove. But like Castaneda, he was thrown to the wolves and has grown as a hitter. He's approaching .300 and is not far behind Perly and Ormiston in HRs and RBIs.
-Lloyd Wyman is having a better year than last. He's getting more work in this year and is currently at the #22 spot in career Saves.
-Having Stell in the lineup and the chronic rain delays have made for a busy bull pen this year (as I expected). The Pen is 7-3, so they have been doing their job. Once the rain delays taper off and our starters start pitching with some consistency (it will happen, I just know it will happen... I hope), our bullpen should find them selves a bit more rested.
-Kitterman and Perly are starting to hit for better average after a pathetic start to the year.
-Sandoz and Mitchell continue to play their best in a platoon situation in RF.

1951 JUNE

Arg!!!!!!! I've spent hours on this post and lost it twice. Flipp'n amazing bad luck with a comptuer today.

There's no way I'm doing a full month game by game post a third time today, so here's the gist of what happened in June:

STANDINGS
40-37 - 3rd in the AL - 16 games behind Philly.

We played well against everybody except for the two AL leaders (Philly & Boston). Unfortunately those two kicked our tail bad in all but a couple of games this month. Thus the big lead for them over us.

Hal Andrew nearly got his ERA to 4.00 but then threw four bad games. The only reason his last two wins were wins were becase he lucked out with some run support.

Our other starters were better this month. Stell was especially good going 4-2, 2.83 for the month. In his last 4 he only allowed a total of 2 runs and even had a CG shutout win in one of them.

Ray Kress made it onto the career leaderboard and has jumped up all the way to the #22 spot. His average dipped below .300, but then he rebounded a bit in the last few games.

Ormiston hit 9HR, Perly 7, Kress 7, Fish 6. Fish also got a Player of the Week award on 6/27

Meacham was our top hitter for AVG going .355. Kitterman is on the rebound and hit almost as well as Meacham.

Lloyd Wyman was doing very well this year until he had one bad game on 6/1. He was immediately sent to the dog house and not given an save op all month. I'm going to put him in as #2 setup guy as well as closer to se if I can force him to get more save ops. I can't afford for him to lose any more skill due to too much pine time as has happened over the last couple of years. Its especially frustrating that he's not geting work when you see that he has only allowed runs in one of his last 10 games and has rarely even giving up a hit. Stupid AI. He's still stuck on the #22 spot in career saves.

Two new coaches were brought in at the middle of the month:
Pitching Coach: Bob Guilderson - Hired '51 after the previous coach stepped down due to health concerns. Bob had only been retired for a year and a half, but he has been bored out of his mind and eager to get back into baseball in any capacity. He spent his entire ML career as a Tiger winning 239 games and is on the career leaderboard with 2036 Ks. An exteremly loyal man, he's also provided excellent leadership in the locker room. He has 22 years of professional pitching experience to draw upon. On top of all that, he's played ball with just about everyone on our roster so he can step in and give input right away.

Hitting / 3B Coach: Kid Fite - Hired a few days after Bob. Fite is not the vocal leader that Bob Guilderson brings to the club house. He's more of the lead by example type. He racked up 3699 hits and hit .329 in his amazing 23 year career. He also knows a little bit about winning as he was a huge part of the 1928 Detroit World Series victory and won another in 1942 with Washington. An amazing fact - he only at 4 minor league at bats before securing a starting spot on Detroits active roster in '22 hitting .260. He was never once sent back to the minors. He even finished his career with a .315 average that last year as a starter making people wonder if he could have continued playing well into his 40s.

Good question, I'm having a hard time deciding on a replacement for him, so he's gotten a slight reprieve at the moment.

7/27 CHI @ DET: loss 2-4 Roy Wolfe only gave up 2R in 8IP. Unfortunately Lloyd Wyman (5-4, 3.99) was unable to hold in the 9th. (I can't win with this closer situation. If I have Lloyd Wyman as a closer only he gets almost no work even when save ops come along. But if I have him in as closer & #2 setup, he's being over used badly even with other rested relievers available. Really frustrating.) STANDINGS
55-47, 3rd in the AL, 14.5 games behind Philly, 15-10 in July

BAD NEWS
-Hal Andrew continues to be very hot or icy cold. I may just have to deal with the fact that he's too inconsistent to be a true ace and hand that title over to Ulrich if he continues to get better.
-Speaking of cold Dave Castaneda hit a dismal .193 for the month and has seen his average dip to .275.
-Luther Ormiston is hitting for power (4th in the AL in HR), but he's really struggling to get on base this year. He has a phenomenal EYE but his .245 average isn't where he should be. He's about ready to lose his cleanup spot to Perly if he doesn't wake up.
-We get off 8/1 and then don't get another day off until September.

GOOD NEWS
-Corky Stell has been insanely good lately. He hasn't giving up more than 1ER in any of his last 10 games and is 9-0 during that time. He was named player of the week on 7/25 and Pitcher of the Month going 5-0, 0.55 and 1 shutouts in 6 games.
-Bud Ulrich has also been good giving up more than 3 earned runs only once in his last 10 games. He was 6-2 in that time, but didn't get as much run support as he normally enjoys.
-Ray Kress was named Batter of the Month hitting .408, 6HR, 22RBI, 23R - he's passed his new hitting coach Kid Fite on the HR Career Leaderboard... Kress is now at the #20 spot and should leap frog up to 18 before the end of next month.
-Lloyd Wyman jumped up to the #19 spot in the Save Career Leaderboard.
-Our top hitter in the past two months... maybe not who you'd think... Pete Short has averaged around .400. Dennis Kitterman hasn't been far behind rebounding well after a pathetic start to the year. He's now hitting a respectable .308.

STANDINGS
62-54, 3rd in the AL, 14.5 GB Philly, 7-7 in the last 2 weeks.

BAD NEWS
-Playing 50-50 ball isn't going to get us caught up.
-Inconsistent starting pitching... yadda yadda yadda
-Inconsistent hitting in front of Kress - Kitterman was a pathetic .208 after I praised him for getting his average up.

GOOD NEWS
-Ray Kress was named Player of the week on 8/8 for hitting .579, 1HR, 10RBI.
-Jim Meacham is back from being injured. He was a perfect 1 for 1 in PH duty and will jump back into his backup catcher spot.

ROSTER MOVES
-Last month MR Errol Roberts was sent down to Toledo-AAA as he was sucking bad on our active roster. We called up vet Stan Leveck to replace him.
-At the beginning of this month, we temporarily demoted MR Oswald Adkins to make room for Gale Adams. Gale was called up to backup Dirtbag Degal while Smokey Meacham was down with a pulled ab muscle. Gale will most likely be sent back down now that the trainers say Smokey is 100% again.
-Gin Allen was demoted to Durham-A as he really started to struggle after a hot start to the season. He even took a minor talent hit so we sent him down as a precaution, probably for the remainder of the year. We really want to see this guy step up since he has the potential to have a monster bat and able to play anywhere in the OF with gold glove potential in RF but we have to be careful not to rush him too quickly.

COACHING CHANGE part 3

With my best Vince McMahon impersonation, "Killbreath..... YOU'RRRRE FIIIRRRRED!!!!!!!"

OK, maybe not that enthusiastic but I'm officially giving Killbreath his walking papers. I really feel terrible that I have to do this but Killbreath has clearly lost the ability to rally the troops.

Recently acquired Pitching Coach Bob Guilderson will manage the rotation while new hitting coach Kid Fite will manage the lineup. This is only temporary until we can name Killbreath's replacement. I definitely hope to have a new manager & bench coach in place before the next draft and spring training.

lol nice job McMahon

for your coaching shopping, I'd recommened to give us a call. I think that Hempkins or Mills would make good canidates, if not for the head job, for hitting or pitching coaches if you promote Kite or Guilderson

STANDINGS
75-57, #2 in the AL, 11 GB Philly, 13-3 in the last two weeks

BAD NEWS
-Despite our 13-3 record in the last two weeks, we still only made up 3.5 games. At this point, I'd have to concede that we are out of the pennant race and should look to setting this team up for next year.

GOOD NEWS
-After I groaned about Dennis Kitterman sucking the first half of the month he turned it around and earned Player of the Week on 8/22 for hitting .619, 2HR & 7 RBI.
-Most of our starters were excellent in the last couple weeks of August as we managed 5 shutouts in 16 games.
-For the month Ormiston and Kress both belted 7HR, Perly hit 6.
-Ray Kress is tied with Tigers pitching coach Kid Fite on the all time AVG leaders - both tied at #24 w/ .329 AVG. Ray has also jumped up to the #18 spot in the career HR leaderboard.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS
-Clinton Darling is slipping all around - age and lack of at bats are slowly taking their toll.
-Don Vonkitzing's endurance slipped - since we are out of the AL race, I'd like to give Vonk a few starts in a temporary 5 man rotation. We lucked out with the fact that none of our starters missed a game… but that ment Vonkitzing spent the entire season in the 'pen and he's always itching to get in a few starts when ever possible.
-Dave Castanada's contact is up against lefties and he is starting to draw more walks.
-John Dirtbag Degal's HR power is up vs everyone - now if he can just get that contact and eye up a bit more... look out. Too bad about that talent plummet in EYE earlier this year, but he's still young, so maybe he'll recover or exceed in another area. I've been trying to give Meacham more and more at bats without killing Degal's growth. Not an easy thing to balance.

Luther Ormiston went 1 for 3, 1BB, 1HR.

STANDINGS
86-59, 2nd in the AL, 9GB Philly, 11-2 in the last two weeks

BAD NEWS
-Not much to gripe about lately as Guilderson and Fite have got this team on a roll. We are 24-5 since firing Killbreath. Still looking for a replacement. But the fans have taken Castaneda's "We don't need no stinking manager" quote and are rolling with it right now. Fite has been running the dugout sometimes from the 3B coach spot while Guilderson has been giving fiery locker room speeches and providing strategy input especially with regards to "his" pitchers. Maybe I should let them manage and just hire 3B & 1B coaches. Hmmmm... I'm starting to like this idea.

GOOD NEWS
-We went from being one of the worst pitching staffs (stats-wise) to one of the better ones very quickly. If we can just get off to a better start next season and can stay healthy, we will definitely make the AL race more interesting that it was this year.
-Luther Ormiston was named Player of the week on 9/5 for hitting .429, 3HR & 9RBI
-Dennis Kitterman got the award in the following week for hitting .478, 3HR & 9RBI.

Gene Masarech (12-11, 3.46) gave up 5R in 6.1IP for the loss. Top Sox hitter was LF Chester Munch (2 for 4, 1DBL) & 2B Tony Seats (1 for 3, 1BB, 1HR). 9/22 CHI @ DET: loss 5-10 Roy Wolfe (17-17, 4.64) gave up 8R (6ER) in 7.2IP. Jack Craze (13-12, 4.90) got the CG win giving up 5R. Top Sox hitters were C Cecil Marziani (3 for 5, 1R, 3RBI, 1DBL, 1HR, POG), LF Chester Munch (2 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1HR), 1B Lonnie Arrendale (3 for 4, 2RBI, 1BB), CF Homer Jewell (2 for 3, 1R, 2RBI, 2BB, 1DBL) & Donald Medart (2 for 5, 2R, 1RBI, 1HR). For us, Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Smokey Meacham went 2 for 4, 1HR. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 4, 1RBI.

9/23 PHI @ DET: loss 2-3 Corky Stell (17-12, 3.06) got the loss giving up 3R in 6IP. Terry Mart (7-7, 3.04) got the win and POG giving up only 4H & 2R in 8IP. Top A's hitter was CF Todd Walker (2 for 3, 1RBI, 1BB). For us, Luther Ormiston went 2 for 4, 1RBI, 1DBL. Ray Kress went 1 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR.

9/24 PHI @ DET: loss 1-16 This has to be the absolute worst game we played all season... actually the worst game I remember since 1945. We were out hit 18-3 and we committed 6 errors to their none. Even Kress committed an error for his 2nd of the season. Don Vonkitzing (3-5, 5.02) who had a nice season going saw his decent RBI blown up giving up 8R in 2IP. Bob Stevens struck out 8 and only gave up 1R in a CG win for POG. Everyone hit well for the A's. For us, only Rollin Fish played well going 2 for 4 and 0 errors. My momma said there will be days like this.

9/25 PHI @ DET: WIN 6-5 Hal Andrew gave up 5R (4ER) in 7.2IP. The win went to Oswald Adkins (2-1, 3.74) pitching a scoreless 9th. Ellis Weeks had allowed 4R in 7IP but the loss went to ex-Tiger Billy Crowell (10-6, 4.36) who blew another save against us. Top A's hitters were 2B Ace Habermehl (5 for 5, 2RBI, 1DBL), LF Hershell Cooley (3 for 5, 2R, 1RBI, 2DBL, 1SB) & Peaches Badeau (2 for 5, 1HR). For us, Ray Kress got POG going 3 for 4, 2R, 2RBI, 1HR, 1SB. John Dirtbag Degal went 2 for 3, 1BB, 1HR. Hal Andrew went 2 for 3, 1R.

BAD NEWS
-Finishing 2nd overall will mean another bad draft position in '52
-Our "ace" Hal Andrew finished strong, but had his second consecutive 4.00+ era season due to an inconsistent first half of the season.
-There were no league or team records for us this season.

GOOD NEWS
-Ray Kress missed the official triple crown by a few RBIs after last years Quadruple Crown. However, he's a triple crown winner in my mind as he lead the league in AVG, HR & R. He jumped on the career league leader board finishing the season tied at #24 (.329) with our new manager Kid Fite & #18 in HR with 261. Barring any injuries, he should make it into the top 10 in HR by the end of next year. He is our team MVP again this year and is a favorite for Batter of the Year and MVP.
-Smokey Meacham was awesome in his first year in the league hitting .332. We knew he'd be good, but we had no idea he'd be that good.
-John Dirtbag Degal's .198 average doesn't represent how much he's improve this season. We expect respectable power numbers from him next year.
-Corky Stell was a nice pickup for us although I hated to give up on Boe. His 3.06 ERA was the lowest for him since 1945 and the best out of all our starters. Hopefully he'll be able to give us another couple of years as we don't have much depth anymore at SP.
-We were lucky to stay so healthy. There were almost no major injuries to our active roster and none of our SP missed a game this year.
-We were #1 in the league in HR, #3 in walks, #5 in AVG.
-After a pathetic start to the season, we finished #4 in team ERA and #2 in opponent AVG.

1952 Coaching Staff

Manager - Kid Fite (2/16/1904)
Pitching Coach / Assistant Manager - Bob Guilderson (12/4/1910)
3B Coach / Hitting Coach - Troy Kinnear (8/21/1900)
1B Coach / Hitting Coach - Quenton Misisca (10/15/1900)
Bench Coach - Nick Graves (3/21/1899)

Most of these guys were members of the Tiger's 1928 World Champion team. I know some people will feel we are going the nostalgia route here, but I see this as a group of guys who figured out how to work together to win the big one. The Tigers need to learn out to play together as a team and develop some consistency. Hopefully this new staff will take us to the next level.

Sometimes I get a bit busy and just barely have time to handle the day2day tasks so we'd like to thank JDW Consulting Inc. for helping us fill out our coaching staff for our active roster.

Shame on me for forgetting that Arden Killbreath was also part of that '28 team.

Oh well, baring injuries or extreme talent dumps, I think we should improve upon last year which actually a good year win/loss-wise. I definitely have high hopes for this team in '52.

1952 Preseason Changes

TRADE

-Gin Allen was traded to the Cardinals for SP/MR Sam Cole. As much as we liked Gin Allen's power hitting potential from CF or RF, we felt that we needed to upgrade our active roster after finishing a disappointed 2nd place again last year. Sam Cole gives us a solid pitcher to fill the setup role and also provides us with a legitimate backup starter. Vonkitzing didn't grow into the pitcher we had hoped. So, Sam steps in to fill his shoes.

ROLE CHANGES
-Backup 3B goes to Mitch Ferron. Mitch Ferron has gold glove potential at 3B. But, Clinton Darling had been getting the sub starts at 3B because he was so much better at the plate. But Clinton's slide at the plate has made Mitch's glove too hard to keep on the bench. Clinton will still be one of the first PH bats against lefties. But Mitch moves into the backup spot at 3B while remaining the primary backup at SS. Mitch will also be called in as a defensive sub at 3B when needed.

DRAFT
#1-2B Mike Kreitenburg has the potential to be an excellent contact hitting 2B. We believe he has the talent similar to Dennis Kitterman if he develops like we expect. He is a faster base runner and could ended up being a solid #2 or even a solid leadoff player at some point. He has an adequate glove at 2B. He could also backup SS, but his range is somewhat lacking there. He should jump to Williamsport-AA after a brief look at Durham-A.

#2-MR John Patterson is a lefty with good control and an excellent ability to hold runners. I had hoped to pick up a starter at the #2 spot, but there was a run on starters right before our pick. With some over achieving, he could turn into a real nice setup guy some day. Other wise, I see him as just a solid MR / mopup pitcher. He's only 18 so he will have to prove himself at the setup spot for Durham-A.

#3-C Lonnie Jolly is a solid defensive catcher with a good throwing arm. If catchers didn't bat, then I'd start him over Smokey and Dirtbag in a heartbeat. His potential with a bat isn't overly impressive and he is slow. He is consistent and has the potential to be a decent gap hitter, but other than that, I just see him as strictly a backup. Gale Adams is also decent defensively and looks to have more HR potential, so Lonnie may have a hard time beating out Adams for that backup to our backup roll. He'll start at catcher for Durham-A but will hopefully earn a promotion to Williamsport before the end of the year.

#4-SP Rich Foss is another lefty who can hold runners. He also has excellent endurance and decent movement on his pitches. I'm not sure he will ever have enough control or pure stuff to make it to our rotation. But, he was definitely worth a peek given that he was one of the last players available in the draft. He should get starts right away in Williamsport-AA.

Top CLE hitters were RF Frank Winsett (2 for 4, 1HR) & CF Honus Dietrich (2 for 4, 1RBI, 1BB). For us, Ray Kress finally got a POG going 2 for 6, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. Dave Castaneda went 2 for 3, 1R, 3BB. Dirtbag Degal went 1 for 5, 1HR.

5/13 CHI @ DET: WIN 4-1 Bud Ulrich (5-1, 2.41) got the win and POG giving up only 1R in 8IP. Lloyd Wyman pitched a scoreless 9th for this 5th save. Johnny Gordley (2-7, 3.99) gave up 4R in a CG loss. Top Sox hitter was RF Stu Cripps (2 for 4, 1RBI). For us, Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 1RBI. Dirtbag Degal went 2 for 4, 1R. Bud Ulrich went 2 for 3, 1R and his hitting a respectable .286. Smokey Meacham hit a PH 3R HR on his only at bat.

5/14 CHI @ DET: WIN 10-1 Roy Wolfe strained a tricep muscle and had to leave the game. He gave up 1R in 3.2IP. Roy is expected to be day to day for about 6 weeks. The win went to Stan Leveck (1-0, 1.42) who allowed 0R in the next 3IP. Adam Sardina (1-7, 6.02) got the loss giving up 6R in 6.2IP. Top Sox hitter was RF Stu Cripps (1 for 3, 1RBI, 1TRPL). For us, Rollin Fish went 2 for 3. Dennis Kitterman went 2 for 4.

STANDINGS
24-13, tied for 1st in the AL, 8-5 in the last two weeks

BAD NEWS
-The injury to Wolfe makes me nervous. Having a starter listed as day2day for more than a month is no fun. If he struggles in the second half of the month, we may swap Roy with Sam Cole until Roy is health again.
-Ray Kress still hasn't awaken. He hit .231 with only 1HR in the last two weeks.
-Dennis Kitterman was a little better this month, but not by much.
-Some of our hitters are hitting well, but we aren't bringing home the runs so despite our starters pitching well, they've been finding wins hard to come by at times.

GOOD NEWS
-Still tied for #1 in the AL. After falling behind big time early in the season for the last couple of seasons, this is a promising start.
-Castaneda and Perly have been real hot. If they can stay hot and Kitterman/Kress wake up, we'll be rollin.

1952, 5/16 THRU 5/31

5/16 day off

5/17 DET @ NYY: WIN 18-1 Hal Andrew (4-4, 2.24) gave up only 1R in 1 CG win. Tom Zonneveld (3-5, 5.13) got pulled after one inning after the Yanks he gave up 11R... 3R earned. No one hit well for the Yanks as they were held to 6 hits. For us, Luther Ormiston got POG going 3 for 6, 2R, 4RBI, 1DBL, 1HR. Ray Kress went 2 for 2, 4R 3RBI, 4BB, 1DBL, 1HR. Carl Sandoz went 3 for 4, 2R, 1BB. Dennis Kitterman went 3 for 6, 3R, 4RBI, 1TRPL. Smokey Meacham went 2 for 6, 2R, 2RBI, 1HR.

5/18 DET @ NYY: WIN 4-0 Bud Ulrich (6-1, 2.13) pitched 8.2 shutout innings for the win and POG. Don Vonkitzing completed the shutout. Eric Williams (6-3, 3.36) gave up 4R in a CG loss. Top Yank hitter was 3B Tim Dilworth (2 for 4). For us, Smokey Meacham was 4 for 4, 2HR. Ray Kress went 4 for 5, 1HR. Bud Ulrich went 3 for 4, 1R, 1DBL and is currently hitting .360.

5/19 DET @ NYY: loss 4-5 Roy Wolfe (5-3, 3.01) got the CG loss giving up 5R (4ER). Maury Baum (4-4, 3.86) got the win giving up 4R in 8IP. Top Yank batters were LF Turk Baker (2 for 3, 2R, 4RBI, 1BB, 1 grand slam, POG) & C Rich Curtis (3 for 3, 1DBL). For us, Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 2RBI, 1DBL. Dennis Kitterman went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL.

5/20 PHI @ DET: loss 1-9 Corky Stell (4-3, 2.80) struggled on a rainy day giving up 4R in 4IP for the loss. Danny Mau (6-2, 2.73) got the win & POG pitching 5 shutout innings. Top A's hitter was LF Matt Praks (2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI). For us, Dave Castaneda went 2 for 4, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL.

5/21 PHI @ DET: WIN 2-1 Hal Andrew (5-4, 2.13) got the win and POg giving up 1R in 8.1IP. Lloyd Wyman close out the 9th for his 6th save. Ellis Weeks (6-2, 2.84) gave up 2R in a CG loss. Top A's hitter was 3B Bud Ayers (1 for 4, 1HR). For us, Luther Ormiston went 2 for 3, 1BB. John Dirtbag Degal went 1 for 3, 1HR. We barely out hit the A's 6 to 4.

5/22 PHI @ DET: WIN 5-4 Bud Ulrich gave up just 2R in 8IP. Unfortunately Lloyd Wyman blew a save so the game went into extra innings. Stan Leveck (2-0, 1.23) pitched a hitless 15th inning and got the win compliments of a Luther Ormiston solo HR. Tad Zonkas gave up 3R in 8IP. The loss went to Ken Malia (0-1, 4.00) as he's the guy who gave up that game winning shot by Luther. We ended up using every reliever we had in this game. Top A's hitters were 2B Ace Habermehl (3 for 6, 2R, 1RBI, 2BB) & RF Peaches Badeau (4 for 8, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR, POG). For us, Dave Castaneda went 3 for 5, 1R. Ray Kress went 2 for 3, 3RBI, 2BB, 1DBL, 1SB before being pulled in favor of Pete Short. Must have been a pinch run situation as I see no other explanation for pulling one of the most clutch bats in the league in a close game.

5/23 CLE @ DET: WIN 8-4 Roy Wolfe (6-3, 3.12) gave our bull pen the day off by getting the CG win giving up 4R. Howie Leosh (3-4, 5.83) gave up 7R in 3.1IP for the loss. POG was CLE CF Honus Dietrich (5 for 5, 2R, 2RBI, 1TRPL, 1HR). For us, Ray Kress went 2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI, 2BB, 1DBL. Luther Ormiston went 2 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB. Smokey Meacham went 2 for 4. Matt Perly went 1 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1HR.

5/24 CLE @ DET: WIN 10-2 Corky Stell (5-3, 2.58) got the win and POG allowing only 1H and pitching 7 shutout innings. Houston Boler (4-5, 4.32) gave up 8R in 4.2IP for the loss. Top CLE hitter was again CF Honus Dietrich (2 for 4). Jerry Tuggle hit a PH solo HR for them with his only at bat. For us, Dave Castaneda went 2 for 4, 4R, 1RBI, 2BB. George Young filled in at 1B and went 2 for 2, 2BB. Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 2RBI, 2BB. Rollin Fish went 2 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Isaac Mitchell went 2 for 4, 1R.

5/25 CLE @ DET: WIN 7-6 Hal Andrew (6-4, 2.51) got the win giving up 6R in 8IP. Alan Paule pitched a scoreless 9th for his first save of the season. George Kauffman (5-4, 4.43) got the loss giving up 7R in 4.1IP. Top CLE hitter was RF Frank Winsett (2 for 3, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR). For us, Luther Ormiston got POG going 2 for 3, 2R, 5RBI, 1BB, 2HR. Dennis Kitterman and Matt Perly both hit solo HRs with their only hits.

5/26 day off

5/27 DET @ WSH: WIN 4-3 Bud Ulrich (7-1, 2.25) got the win and POG giving up 3R in 8IP. Lloyd Wyman closed out the 9th for his 7th save. Joe Homic (5-6, 3.93) gave up 4R in a CG loss. Top WSH hitter was 1B Chris Anderson (1 for 3, 1R, 2RBI, 1BB, 1HR). For us, Bud Ulrich went 2 for 2, 1R, 2RBI. Luther Ormiston went 2 for 3, 1R, 1BB. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R.

5/28 DET @ WSH: WIN 4-2 Roy Wolfe (7-3, 3.04) gave up only 2R in 8IP for the win and POG. Lloyd Wyman pitched a hitless 9th for his 8th save. Van Melbourn (2-9, 4.67) gave up 4R in 8.2IP for the loss. No one hit well for WSH as they were held to 5 hits. For us, Isaac Mitchell went 2 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Ray Kress went 2 for 5, 2DBL. Dennis Kitterman went 2 for 4, 2RBI, 1BB. Dave Castaneda went 2 for 3, 1RBI, 2BB.

5/29 DET @ WSH: WIN 7-2 Corky Stell (6-3, 2.57) gave up only 2R in 7.1IP for the win. Chris Frays (3-5, 3.31) gave up 4R in 7Ip for the loss. Top WSH hitter was SS Hitman Crocitto (2 for 4). 5/30 day off

5/31 DET @ StL: WIN 6-5 Hal Andrew gave up 5R (4ER) in 7.2IP. The win went to Lloyd Wyman (2-1, 2.05) who gave up 0R in the next 1.1IP. Alan Paule closed out the 10th for his 2nd save. Alter Sennelnekoff gave up 5R in 8.2IP. The loss went to Bob Jeakins (0-1, 2.50) who gave up 1R in the 10th. Top StL hitter was CF Jessie Witt (3 for 5, 1R). For us, Matt Perly got POG going 3 for 5, 1R, 1RBI. Luther Ormiston went 3 for 3, 1R, 2BB. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 3, 1RBI.

STANDINGS
35-15, #1 in the AL, 0.5 games ahead of Boston, 11-2 in the last two weeks.

BAD NEWS
-Rollin Fish hasn't found his groove this year currently hitting only .204
-Only 5 HR for Ray Kress in 2 months... he's giving the rest of the AL a heck of a head start this year in the HR race. I expected to see him make the top 10 on the career leaderboard in HRs, but he's not making it easy on himself.
-We've had a ton of injuries, but most of them are in the minors and to non-critical prospects.

GOOD NEWS
-We are on a 9 game win streak and were 11-2 in the last two weeks but we can't get cocky as we didn't face Boston during that time.
-All of our starters and nearly our entire bull pen are pitching very well... even Wolfe has been gutting out his tricep injury about as good as we can expect. Time to give Bob Guilderson a raise.
-Bud Ulrich was named AL Pitcher of the Month on 6/1. He had a record of 4-0, 1.32 in 6GS.
-Luther Ormiston was named AL Batter of the Month on 6/1 for hitting .345, 7HR, 27RBI, 20BB.
-Ray Kress is hitting better and has quickly gotten his average up to .304.
-Isaac Mitchell and Carl Sandoz have gotten off to another hot start this year platooning in RF. If Kitterman doesn't start hitting with some consitancy, he's going to lose his #2 spot to these two.

DEVELOPMENT OBSERVATIONS
-John Dirtbag Degal's swing is starting to look better from the right side of the plate.
-Bud Ulrich is finally starting to pitch like a potential ace. But, he's had hot starts before so only time will tell if he's really got the stuff. He's also leading out team with a .379 batting AVG at the moment.
-Lloyd Wyman was reported to have lost some velocity this year in spring training, but he's throwing triple digit fastballs now and looking sharp as our closer. He's moved up to the #17 spot on the career saves leaderboard and could make it into the top 10 this year if he stays healthy and consistant.
-Mike Kreitenberg's stay in AA may have to be cut short. He's got a better swing than some of the guys on our active roster now so I need to think about moving him to ToledoAAA sooner than I expected. We are going to have a serious log jam in our middle IF if he keeps improving.
-ToledoAAA coach is telling me I need to promote Sam Cheney at some point, but we don't have room for him at the moment and he still hasn't gotten his control back to the point where I'd be comfortable starting him anywhere above AAA.
