New Era of NPBL Baseball Begins...

For the first time in its history, the NPBL will face some allignment changes. These changes come much to the relief of many owners tired of playing the same 3 opponents over and over again. The league will keep it's schedule heavy in divisional play, but it will shift to 4 6-team divisions instead of 6 4-team divisions. We'll still get a heavy dose of New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, only now we'll also get a bunch of games vs the Maryland Admirals and the D.C. Senators as well. Here is how the FFL North now looks:
Code:
team w l pct gb
Connecticut 0 0 .000 -
D.C. 0 0 .000 -
Maryland 0 0 .000 -
Massachusetts 0 0 .000 -
New York 0 0 .000 -
Pennsylvania 0 0 .000 -
Maryland won 96 games and the National Cup last season, while D.C. managed just 58 wins. The league will continue to feature 8 playoff teams, so the top two finishers in each division will advance to the playoffs. I think finishing 2nd in a division with New York and Maryland will be next to impossible, but you never know...

Spring Training is Tomorrow moring. I'll announce our 2011 lineups then!

Freedom Announces 2011 Pitching Staff

Code:
Starters AGE W L S G ERA
Lowell Stang 28 20 8 0 35 2.15
Hector Moreno 33 4 3 31 52 1.65
Chris Curcio 34 15 10 0 32 2.59
Skip Burns 29 9 14 0 34 3.41
Tracey Northrup 32 1 1 0 7 0.44
Bullpen
Michael Welch 32 4 2 1 50 2.97
Alphonse Nietz 26 7 9 0 26 4.11
Charlie Clowers 27 4 5 5 66 3.70
Adam Guerrero 32 7 6 3 60 3.92
Frank Scull 39 2 2 0 33 2.13
The success of Chris Curcio (a pitcher with terrible stuff, but high control and movement) had led to the shuffling of our staff. Similarly rated Hector Moreno and Tracey Northrup enter the rotation. Moreno was 4-3 with 31 saves and a 1.65 ERA last season. But his good endurance make him to good too keep penned up. Northrup spent most of last season in AAA, where he was 10-12 with a 2.89 ERA. After being called up, he went 1-1 with a 0.44 ERA in 7 appearances including 2 starts. Northrup, a fixture in our rotation during the rebuilding years, has a horrendous 39-71 record in his career. But his ERA is a more respectable 3.90, and even better within the OOTP6 engine.

The staff ace is once again Stang, who had a sensational season last year. If not for James Yim, he would have easily won the Walter Johnson Award.

Rounding out the rotation is Superman Skip Burns. We expect better from him - a 9-14 record is undeserving of such a dominant nickname. His 3.41 ERA should win him a few more games if we can generate more offense...

Veteran Chris Kearns chose not to retire, but he couldn't make the roster. He'll be starting in AAA this year.

At 39 years of age, Frank Scull steps up to reclaim his role as closer. Scull has 322 career saves. Last year, in middle relief, he had his best season since 2003, going 2-2 with a 2.13 ERA and a 0.85 WHiP. Whether he can keep that role all year remains to be seen - 39-year-olds are known to decline quickly.

A couple of former starting prospects, Charlie Clowers and Alphonse Nietz, should solidify the bullpen. Even with just 5 relievers, we should have plenty of stamina in the pen. Overall, I think this is a very strong staff. And if we are to compete with NY or Maryland, they will need to excell.

No major trades, no new faces; just the same guys who - with the exception of Babe Ruth Award winner Bick Horizon - hit terribly.

The truth is, I didn't make any changes because I don't think I need to just yet. Claus, Rodriguez, Talamantez, Thom and Lust are all capable of putting up impressive numbers. I think they all just had off years simultaneously. Ratings-wise, they look good. So lets see if they can overcome having James Yim in the division and start hitting some...

I may ship down one of my infielders for an extra outfielder - I don't really have any good outfielders in AAA, but William Chipman could surprise us. We'll see.

Lineup
1 CF Thom
2 3B Rodriguez
3 RF Lust
4 1B Horizon
5 2B Claus
6 LF Tracey
7 SS Talamantez
8 C Pooler vs R - Martinez vs L

Yep, and you start in last place as well :sympathy:

Sad to see Kearns drop down. The end of an era, but I tend to agree with keeping the lineup intact. Ludwig will bounce back this year methinks and with a bit more development you could have a great 1-2 (3-4?) punch in the lineup. If someone actually gets on base occasionally for them it could be another exciting year!

Well, our streak of successive seasons increasing our OPS has ended. I'm really suprised our R/G was as high as it was last year, given our team's average. Check out the low K numbers though...

OPENING SIM, 2011

4/5 - 5-1 loss vs DC - The Freedom hosted DC on opening day, and hopes were high as 20-game winner Lowell Stang took to the mound against DC's Jeffrey Cargo, a 17-game loser a year ago. But Cargo was the one who brought his A game, scattering 9 singles over 7.2 innings before handing the game over to the bullpen. Lowell Stang was roughed up for 5 ER on 6 H in 6 innings. Bick Horizon, who was 2-for-3 in the game, drove in the lone Pennsylvania run.
4/6 - 2-1 WIN vs DC - Hector Moreno's first start in well over a year (and 5th in 3 years) was a gem. Moreno held the Senators to 4 hits in 7 innings to pick up the win. Frank Scull, who took over the closer role from Moreno this year (after Moreno took it from him last year), picked up his first save in over a year. Bernard Lust was the offensive hero, going 2-for-3 with a 2-run double.
4/7 - 8-0 WIN vs DC - Chris Curcio led the way with a 5-hit shutout, the 5th of his career. Horizon was 2-for-5 with 2 2B and 2 RBI, while Claus and Talamantez had 3 hits a piece.
4/8 - OFF DAY
4/9 - 11-4 loss @ Connecticut - Ludwig Claus hit the Freedom's first home run of the year to give Pennsylvania a 3-0 1st inning lead, but Skip Burns, Alphonse Nietz and Charlie Clowers all pitched poorly. Burns allowed 6 ER on 5 hits in 4 innings of work. Pennsylvania also made 3 errors in the game.
4/10 - 3-2 loss @ Connecticut - Lowell Stang went down with a stiff elbow and will miss a week. He had allowed 1 ER in 4.1 innings. Welch and Clowers pitched well and held the lead, but Marines slugger Donald Birnbaum hit a 9th inning 2-run walk-off homer off of Frank Scull. Horizon was 2-for-4 with his first home run.

I'll go ahead and say it; Scull is on a short leash this year. Not only is he nearly 40 years old, but despite putting up splendid numbers last season, each of the 4 seasons prior to that his ERA was well over 4. So, last year was more than likely a fluke. He'll need to get hot quick if he wants to be our closer in May. Stang is out for a week, so it looks like Northrup will get a start next sim. I hope Skip Burns can pull it together... I think he could be the weak link in our rotation, even though he is highly regarded by scouts.

Franklyn Thom and Keith Tracey are the only players to start the season in any real slumps, and that is good to see. I hope Claus can put up good numbers all year. We really need his bat to compliment Lust and Horizon. I'd also like to see M-Rod finally start to draw more walks. Pooler has hit well early; but he often gets off to a quick start before fading into the .250's. So far, so good.

Team Rankings
Batting AVG: .248 (9th)
Homeruns: 2 (15th)
Walks: 8 (20th)
Stolen Bases: 3 (T-9th)
Runs Scored: 17 (12th)

Pitching ERA: 4.15 (18th)
Opponents AVG: .244 (11th)
HRs Allowed: 4 (T-10th)
Walks Allowed: 10 (6th)
Runs Allowed: 20 (T-13th)

The numbers aren't great, but we've only played 5 games...

Upcoming Schedule
4/11 - final game of our current series @ Connecticut Marines (2-3)
4/12-13 - @ New York Barons (4-1)
4/14-15 - @ Massachusetts Patriots (2-3)
4/16-18 - @ Maryland Admirals (3-2)
4/19 - off
4/20-21 - @ Virginia Cannons (3-2)

Wow - what a road trip. We get New York and Maryland, arguably the favorites in the division. After the finale of the Virginia series 4/22, we'll return home. But right now we are in the midst of a 13-game road trip.

You're right. Hmmm.... Why don't you give me Clarence DiBenedetto. He must stink - he's only batting .158. I'll give you a 4th round pick for him...

Sim Report #2 - 2011

4/11 - 4-1 loss @ Connecticut - Moreno allowed 4 ER on 8 hits in 9 innings of work. Connecticut's Kyle Nunn shut us down, allowing just 3 hits (a single and a double by Tracey and a double by Claus).
4/12 - 4-1 WIN @ New York - M-Rod and Bernard Lust hit their first home runs of the season (both career longs), and Bick Horizon added an RBI double as the Freedom wins at New York. Chris Curcio pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits, while Scull pitched a scoreless 9th for his 2nd save of the year.
4/13 - 6-3 loss @ New York - Bick Horizon was 2-for-4 with his second home run of the year, but Tracey Northrup failed to make it past the 2nd inning, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits.
4/14 - 7-0 WIN @ Massachusetts - Skip Burns pitched a 3-hit shutout, and Bernard Lust went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 runs scored to power the Freedom. Horizon (3), Claus (2) and Talamantez (1) each homered for Pennsylvania.
4/15 - 3-2 WIN @ Massachusetts (10 innings) - Bick Horizon gave the Freedom the lead for good in the 10th with his 4th home run of the season. It was his 3rd straight game with a homer. Hector Moreno piched 6 scoreless innings, and even hit his 1st home run in 222 career at bats. Frank Scull pitched the 9th and 10th to earn his first win of the year.
4/16 - 11-1 loss @ Maryland - Carlos Martinez went 2-for-3 with his first home run of the year, but the rest of the offense was contained by James Yim. Chris Curcio allowed 6 ER on 10 hits in 4.1 innings to fall to 2-1. The game was really as lopsided as they come.
4/17 - 5-4 WIN @ Maryland - Lust (2) and Pooler (1) homered, and Pat Galyon added a clutch pinch hit RBI double as the Freedom beat the Admirals. Northrup allowed 3 ER on 7 hits in 6 innings to move to 1-1 on the year.
4/18 - 3-1 WIN @ Maryland - Franklyn Thom improved his season average to .196 with a 3-for-5 line, including a pair of doubles. Skip Burns turned in his second straight brilliant outing, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits in 7 innings while ringing up 7 Ravens. Scull allowed 1 ER in the 9th, but comes away with his 4th save nonetheless.
4/19 - OFF DAY
4/20 - 5-2 loss @ Virginia - The Cannons pound Hector Moreno for 4 ER in 6.2 innings. Keith Tracey went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and Bernard Lust added 2 hits in the loss.

We split with NY and took 2 of 3 from Maryland to avoid what could have been a disasterous road trip. My goal is to stay within 3-5 games of second place. If I can do that, then I may make a trade around the deadline to boost the offense. Otherwise, I'll hold onto my picks.

I'm still happy with how we've pitched. Stang's injury ended up lasting longer than the expected 7 days - he should be ready to go in 2. Neitz and Clowers both threw well last sim. They will be key, because they are my best trade bait.

It looks like our offense is suffering from many of the same problems that plagued us last year. Thom and M-Rod are rarely setting the stage for Lust and Horizon, while Claus is struggling to stay above .200. Hopefully they are just off to slow starts, and won't be mired in season-long slumps.

Sim #3, 2011

4/21 - 4-3 loss @ Virginia - Another tough outing for Curcio, who falls to 2-2 after allowing 9 hits in 6 innings (3 ER). Lust, Tracey and Pooler had 2 hits a piece for the Freedom.
4/22 - 4-3 loss @ Virginia - Deja Vous... Claus went 3-for-4 with 2 homers (4) but it takes more than 1 man to win a ballgame. Northrup allowed 3 ER on 4 hits in 6 innings of work to fall to 1-2.
4/23 - 6-2 loss vs Tennessee - We finally come home, and lose the opener. Lowell Stang was rusty in his return, allowing 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Lust and Pooler were each 2-for-3.
4/24 - 13-1 WIN vs Tennessee - Superman Burns continues to be hot, striking out 9 in 7.2 innings while allowing 1 ER on 4 hits. We also hit 4 homers - Lust (3), C-Mart (2), Claus (5) and Tracey (1). C-Mart earned player of the game honors with a 3-for-4 line and 4 RBI. M-Rod, Bernard Lust, Ludwig Claus and Keith Tracey each scored 3 times.
4/25 - 7-6 loss vs Tennessee - Could the Hector Moreno project be failing miserably? Moreno allowed 6 ER on 9 hits in just 3.2 innings to fall to 1-3. Offensively, Franklyn Thom went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI and Bick Horizon went 2-for-4 with a 3-run homer (5).
4/26 - OFF DAY
4/27 - 6-1 WIN vs Louisiana - Chris Curico went the distance, allowing 1 ER on 7 hits. He is now 3-2 with a 2.62 ERA. Marcellus Antunez had a career day, going 2-for-4 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI. He entered the game with 0 RBI this season.
4/28 - 4-1 WIN vs Louisiana - It's nearly May, and Lowell Stang is just now picking up his first win of the season. Stang allowed 1 ER in 6.2 innings, and Frank Scull picked up his 5th save of the season. Bick Horizon went 1-for-2 with 2 walks and a homer (6) and Keith Tracey went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
4/29 - 2-1 WIN vs Louisiana - Skip Burns turned in another gem, but left with no decision. He allowed 1 ER on 5 hits in 8 innings while fanning 8 batters. Charlie Clowers pitched a scoreless 9th and got the win when Ludwig Claus drove in Jason Leto (who had pinch run for M-Rod) in the bottom of the 9th.
4/30 - 4-0 WIN vs Florida - Horizon (7) and Antunez (3) homered for the Freedom as Hector Moreno rebounded from 3 bad starts with a 4-hit shutout. It was his first shutout in 125 career starts.

We're still within a couple of games of second place, but Connecticut has turned out to be a surprisingly good team, albiet early. New York pulled away from the pack a little last sim.

We only gave up more than 4 runs once last sim, and we finally got a glimpse at what Lowell Stang can do. It was encouraging to see another good start out of Moreno as well. with Clowers doing so well, it's hard to keep him out of the rotation. I guess its a good problem to have.

It's May 1st, and Thom is still posting a sub-.200 OBP, so he drops way down to #7. Tally now leads off - he's not much better, but at least he gets on 26% of the time. Lust and Horizon have been impressive thus far. Claus has been about where I hoped he would be. Now if I could only get Thom into gear... I'd love to upgrade in CF or LF, but I don't really have any good trade bait in the minors. Clowers and Nietz haven't attracted as much attention as I hoped they would. I'm not in a pickle yet, so I can afford to be patient, but I want to score some more runs, and soon.

Well, I'm pleased with everyone so far - I'd like to see Burns reduce the number of walks he's allowing, but he's at least making up for them by striking out every third batter he faces. At the last minute, I moved Clowers into the rotation instead of Northrup - mainly to increase his trade value - and he went 2-0. I guess he'll stay in the rotation until I can deal him.

Franklyn Thom has come on strong, but I don't know if I should move him back to the top of the order where he struggled or leave him where he is. I guess I'll leave him for now. Lust and Horizon are still proving to be a great duo. Claus is at 80% after an arm injury, so his average has fallen. He still seems to be giving us decent power though. I may flip him and Tracey if Tracey has another good sim. One reason we've been so hot is the great play we've been getting from our bench - everyone by Pearson has been decent - Antunez has only hit .208 but he's got 3 homers and 7 RBI in very little playing time. C-Mart and Pooler - who both usually struggle - have both been good, giving me the opposite of my normal catching dilema. For the time being. Pooler will start vs righties and C-Mart vs lefties (that's how its been all year). Why mess with what works?

Rankings
Batting AVG: .247 (10th)
Homeruns: 37 (T-4th)
Walks: 73 (T-16th)
Stolen Bases: 17 (17th)
Runs Scored: 139 (8th)

Pitching ERA: 2.77 (3rd)
Opponents AVG: .229 (6th)
HRs Allowed: 15 (T-4th)
Walks Allowed: 59 (T-3rd)
Runs Allowed: 95 (3rd)

The team average is nearly .250 - that's great for us. We've also out-homered our opponents 37-15; and that has been key to our success.

Upcoming Games
5/11, 5/12 - vs New York (23-9)
5/13, 5/14, 5/15 and 5/16 - @ Massachusetts (10-21)
5/17 - Off
5/18, 5/19 and 5/20 - vs North Carolina (19-12)

interesting how your first ever 13-game win streak coincides with your first turn as commissioner. now, we know you were behind the martin prince alias, due to that little self alias-outing, but now's the time to 'fess up, chappy -- you're really the fit dog, aren't you?

just playin', of course. let's see 20 in a row, shall we?

Mwuh ha ha ha...

As I've proven in the recent past, I'm not smart enough to keep my aliases hidden. Therefore, if I were the Fit Dog I certainly would have accidently exposed myself by now.

Now - you missed something... My first turn as commissioner was the final three months of last season - which was also my first trip to the playoffs!

But, I can assure you it is all coincidence. I respect my fellow commissioners too much to cheat.

While I didn't draft Yim....only been the GM since 2005 (or was it 2006)....when I saw that I had won the NPBL series....I immediately went and had a "Thank God for James Yim" t-shirt made.....

On the could he duplicate his 30 win season...don't put it past him...in that year....as a team we stumbled out of the gates and fell 10+ games behind North Carolina....I switched to a 4 man rotation I think just before the all-star break...at the time...Yim was 15-1 or 16-1....I remember talking to Satchel....and we both were like he's got a shot at 30...so from that moment on....it was a goal to get him as many starts as I could without risking his arm too much.

If I fall too far back from NY, or Penn for that matter this season....you may see another run at it...lol...although he's only 4-0 in seven starts with a 0.97 ERA and 0.61 WHIP so far.

I was surprised to see Loranger improved while I was without internet.....not that long ago I remember you or someone else asking me how I thought that deal turned out.....it's nice to atleast to get hopefully something out of it...

On a side note...Loranger will be making his NPBL debut next sim as he just got called up from AAA.

Welcome back to the web, divine bovine.

I guess another 30-win season isn't out of the question, but Yim's K/9 ratio has slipped over the past two seasons, so I doubt he'll ever strike out 375 batters again. Man, that 0.74 career WHIP... phenomenal...

5/11 - 7-2 WIN vs New York - The Barons fall to Hector Moreno, who allowed 2 ER on just 4 hits in 8.1 innings of work. Player of the Game honors went to Jason Leto, who hit his first homer of the year as part of a 2-for-5, 3 RBI day. Talamantez went 4-for-5 in the leadoff spot as well.
5/12 - 3-2 WIN vs New York - Chris Curcio allowed 2 ER on 6 hits in 5 innings, and 5 relievers shut out the Barons the rest of the way. Mikey Welch earned the win and Frank Scull picked up save #9. Carlos Martinez went 2-for-2 with his 3rd homer of the year, and Pat Galyon was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
5/13 - 9-7 loss @ Massachusetts - The winning streak ended at 15 games - impressive seeing as there was a sweep of New York in there. Today we were up 7-2 in the 8th, but Adam Guerrero and Frank Scull each got roughed up (and Scull wound up with the loss). Charlie Clowers started and threw well for 6 innings. Bick Horizon went 3-for-4 with a HR (12) and Antunez homered (4) as well - a pinch-hit grand slam.
5/14 - 7-3 WIN @ Massachusetts - Horizon and Tracey each went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored, and Tracey and Thom each drove in a pair of runs for the Freedom. Lowell Stang allowed 0 ER in 6 innings, allowing 3 hits and 4 walks.
5/15 - 5-3 WIN @ Massachusetts - Lust (4) and Horizon (13) each hit 2-run homers, and M-Rod was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Skip Burns continued to impress, allowing 1 ER on 5 hits in 6 innings to move to 5-1 on the season.
5/16 - 6-1 loss @ Massachusetts - The rebuilding Patriots earned the split behind starter William Ratzlaff. Hector Moreno allowed 6 ER on 7 hits, all in the 3rd inning. Bernard Lust, who was 2-for-4, now has an 11-game hitting streak.
5/17 - OFF DAY
5/18 - 2-1 WIN vs North Carolina (10 innings) - Chris Curcio allowed 0 ER on 2 hits in 8.1 innings of work. Adam Guerrero allowed 1 ER on 2 hits in 1.2 innings and got the win. Manny Talamantez singled in Anthony Pooler (who had walked) for the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Lust was 1-for-4 to extend his streak to 12 games
5/19 - 6-5 WIN vs North Carolina - Lowell Stang didn't have his best stuff, allowing 3 ER in 6.1 innings, but he got the win thanks to an offensive outburst. Tracey (5), Thom (3), Pearson (1) and Martinez (4, 5) all homered for the Freedom. Lust was once again 1-for-4.
5/20 - 4-1 WIN vs North Carolina - Skip Burns K'd 8 batters and allowed 0 runs on 3 hits in 6.1 innings. Manny Talamantez drove in a pair of runs, Ludwig Claus went 2-for-2 and Bernard Lust went 1-for-4 to extend his streak to 14 games.

On May 7th, our scouts downgraded Hector Moreno's movement and control. He's made 2 starts since then; in the first he allowed 2 ER in 8 innings, and the second 6 ER in 3 innings. He still has pretty good ratings - a 10 in movement and a 7 in control - so I'm not going to panic yet (his talent in movement fell to a 9, but his rating is still a 10). Adam Guerrero's ERA has been a sore spot, but luckily, he hasn't seen much action. Northrup and Neitz are both typically starters, so they've got plenty of stamina, so Guerrero hasn't been needed much. Skip Burns is still pitching like an All-Star, and Lowell Stang is now in the groove too. We definitely have a killer rotation.

Anthony Pooler has cooled off, and now I'm really itching to get C-Mart in the lineup more frequently. He's got 3 more hits, 2 more doubles, 4 more homers, and 7 more RBI than Pooler in 9 fewer at-bats. To get him more PT without dissolving the platoon, I've increased him to 30% vs righties on the depth chart. Bick Horizon is making another Babe Ruth Award run. If the season ended today, the award would go to either Bick or NY's Anthony Beckford. Beckford is leading the league with a .430 average (Bick is 10th with a .318 average) while Horizon leads the league with a .635 SLG% (Beckford is 2nd at .615). Horizon is 1st with 34 RBI and 5th with 27 runs, and oddly enough, Beckford is not in the top 10 in either of those categories (25 RBI, 22 Runs). Horizon also has a healthy lead over Beckford in TB, with Horizon leading the league with 94 and Beckford 6th with 83. But it's way to early to think about the Ruth Award. Right now, it's time to score some more runs!!!

All 9 games will be vs the South, and we've not done well against Tennessee or Virginia this season. Should be a tough sim.

Minor League Update
I haven't really mentioned much about my farm system recently, mainly because I traded all my good prospects away.

But here's a look at our top 10 prospects:
Code:
# Name Age Pos Contact Power Eye/Discipline Speed Range Level AVG HR RBI

Like I said - not a whole lot of talent up there. All of the pitchers have a shot at big league success someday, but of the hitters, I'd say only Fairfax and possibly Jones will ever make it to the bigs. Sayowitz has hit well, but at 25 and still in A ball, he's not looking that good.

Yeah...his big K numbers went down hill pretty much right after we converted to OOTP 6. I'm glad to see he can still pitch at the same level as before though.
