NP--I hope to have the "draft" version done this weekend. I can tell you now it will definately need some tweaking as far as cell/sheet links. But I think it will be workable, just not as efficient as it could/will be.

BILLY REAY HAT TRICK HELPS HABS EVEN SERIES WITH DETROIT Billy Reay scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 6-3 win over the Red Wings in Detroit. The Habs victory evens the best of seven semi-final at 1 game apiece with games 3 and 4 in Montreal this weekend. Reay scored the first three Montreal goals as the Canadiens built a 3-1 lead after two periods. The game was more lobsided than the score indicated as Montreal had outshot Detroit 42-18 through two periods. Only a second straight outstanding effort from Red Wings goaltender Harry Lumley kept the Canadiens from reaching double-digits on the scoreboard. For the game Montreal outshot Detroit 59-29. Leo Gravelle, Jimmy Peters and Maurice Richard also scored for the Canadiens while Ted Lindsay, with a pair, and Jim Conacher where the Detroit marksmen. Meeker's goals both came in the second period with the first one being a shorthanded marker that took the wind out of the Rangers sails and gave Toronto a 3-0 lead at the time. Bill Ezinicki, Harry Watson and Bud Poile also scored for the Leafs who firesd 39 shots at Rayner and Sugar Jim Henry, who took over in the New York cage midway through the third period. Game 2 of the series is Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. The Stags are now tied with St Louis for first place in the division with each club having one game remaining. Chicago finishes off the season in Providence on Saturday while the Bombers close out at home to Boston. Just one game on the schedule for tonight as New York visits Toronto. Code:

Reeves was a restricted free agent but received no offers aside from the Jets. He has started every game at quarterback for the Jets each of the last three seasons but his QB rating has gone down and his interceptions have gone up each of the three years. Last season his rating was just 67.5 and he tossed 24 interceptions. He was 12-4 and helped the Jets to the playoffs in his first season but the club suffered through a 5-11 campaign the following season. Last year New York was 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the second straight season - a first for the franchise that had been in the postseason three of the first four years of the league. The Jets had made a halfhearted effort at signing Vaughn Diedrick but after Diedrick signed with Philadelphia the Jets had to turn their attention back to Reeves. The Jets also announced they have resigned punter Herb Bright who has been with the club for the past three seasons. The only other signing news came out of St Louis where the Rams resigned kicker Jason Johnson. Johnson was perfect on extra points and 25-for-35 on field goal attempts a year ago. BOXING NEWS Charley Williams knocked out Harry Mathews in the second round of their lightheavyweight bout in New York. Mathews seemed to be in control of the round until Williams landed a wild overhead right that landed flush. With a career record of 18-8-1, Williams is moving up the lightheavyweight rankings. Just 20 years old, the Kansas City native is now ranked 9th in his weight class. Mathews suffered his 4th loss to go with 28 victories and he has now slipped out of the top 10 in the weight class. In another lightheavyweight match on the same card Fitzie Fitzpatrick won a split decision over Gus Lesnovich. In Cannes, Marcel Cerdan retained the European Middleweight Title with a 12th round TKO win over German Jupp Besselmann. Cerdan improves to 25-5 and may be in line for a shot at World Middleweight Champion Tony Zale next year. The loss drops Besselmann to 23-15. GOLF NOTES Ryder Cup captains Ben Hogan and Henry Cotton each practiced at the Bayshore Golf and Country Club in Miami Beach, Florida today in preparation for their 36 hole exhibition tournament this weekend. The friendly event, as it is being called, is designed to raise money for and draw attention to this fall's Ryder Cup event which will be held in Portland, Oregon. Word has it Hogan looked exceptionally sharp and carded a 7 under par 65. Cotton's result from his practice round was not made public.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SATURDAY MARCH 31, 1947
TSN NAMES IT'S HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ALL-AMERICANS CCNY RECRUITS CLAIM 2 OF THE 5 SPOT ON TEAM INCLUDING PLAYER OF YEAR MCGUIRE New York City guard Al *McGuire has been named TSN's High School basketball player of the year. McGuire, who averaged 31.0 ppg, has committed to attend CCNY next year. McGuire's older brother Dick averaged 11.3 ppg as a sophomore for Indiana this season. Al, like his brother, had been heavily recruited by St John'sand Indiana before finally deciding on CCNY. Joining McGuire in the backcourt on the high school All-America team is point guard Colby Cooper, who averaged 38.5 ppg and 12.6 apg from Prouty (Massachusetts) High School. Cooper will attend Boston College. A pair of California natives are the forwards on the all-star team. Mel *Hutchins of Sacramento helped his school to the State Finals by averaging 20.0 ppg and 11.5 rpg. He has committed to Oregon. Don *Barksdale from Alisal High School in Salinas is the other forward. He will attend UCLA next year. At center is Charlie *Share, a 7 footer from Paul Roberson High School in Brooklyn. He had 23.3 ppg and 15.6 rpg. Share will be joining McGuire at CCNY. BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Just one game in the Association last night as Toronto surprised New York 56-54. Leo Mogus sent the small but enthusiastic crowd at Maple Leaf Gardens home happy by scoring the final 2 of his 9 points a split second before the final buzzer to give the lowly Huskies their 15th win of the season. Attention tonight will be focused on Providence and St Louis as the West Division title is up for grabs. Chicago and St Louis are tied for top spot with the Stags visiting Providence for their final game while the Bombers end the season at home against Boston. Code:

The Montreal Canadiens return home to the Forum with their series against Detroit knotted at 1-game apiece. The Habs have dominated the play in both games but Red Wing goaltender Harry Lumley has been outstanding. Meanwhile, the New York Rangers will try to turn things around against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The visiting Leafs embarrassed the New Yorkers 5-1 in the series opener on Thursday, chasing Ranger goaltender Chuck Rayner in the process. HARD TO BELIEVE BUT GOLF SEASON IS HERE One of the first signs of summer is when we start hearing about golf tournaments. It may be a little early to break out the sun tan lotion but golf is here, well at least it is here if you live in Miami Beach. The Bayshore Golf and Country Club is the host to a special exhibition that is being called a Ryder Cup preview. The Ryder Cup captains, Ben Hogan of the United States and England's Henry Cotton, are competing in a 36-hole event to raise money and attention for this fall's Ryder Cup event which will be held in Portland, Oregon. The first 18 holes were played Friday in driving winds at the oceanside course. Ben Hogan carded an even par 72 while Cotton exploded on the back nine and finished with a 5 over par 77. "The winds really picked up on the back nine," explained Hogan. "Neither of us had a chance out there." Hogan was 2 under and Cotton was even par after the front nine before the weather turned and the scores ballooned. They will complete their exhibition today. The PGA season gets underway next week in North Carolina with the Greater Greensboro Open at the Forest Oaks Country Club. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFSEASON NOTES STEELERS RESIGN MARANGI Mickey Marangi has agreed to a 6 year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The running back gained a career high 1100 yards rushing last year, despite starting just 8 games. In 5 of his 8 starts he rushed for over 100 yards. Marangi missed 2 full games and parts of 2 others with injuries. He is expected to battle second year back Elmer *Angsman for the starting assignment. In other signing news the Houston Texans resigned RFA Gus Barton. The backup running back gained 517 yards and started 4 games last season. Washington also signed a back-up running back. Art Richards agreed to a 4-year deal with the Redskins that keeps him as Bob *Seymour's understudy in the nation's capitol. Richards gained 213 yards on 56 carries last year. Finally the Bengals resigned kicker Steve Modzelewski to a 1 year deal.

Wait, back it up. Is this a fictional player? I went to David Prouty High School in Massachusetts. Is this just a coincidence? |

Co-incidence. All college players without an *asterisk beside their last name are fictional players created by TDCB. Hutchins, Barksdale, Share and McGuire (oops, forgot the * for McGuire) were all real life players I added to the high school pool at the beginning of the TDCB season. I was going to name another real-life player to round out the all-america team but the fictional game created Cooper's stats were too amazing to overlook.
TDCB uses real high school names in it's game but it is still quite a coincidence that one of the 5 players I mention went to the same high school as a reader of this thread. On the bright side, I guess you have another player to follow through this dynasty.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS BRODA SHUTOUT BACKSTOPS LEAFS TO SWEEP IN NEW YORK Toronto goaltender Turk Broda turned aside all 35 New York shots as the Maple Leafs blanked the Rangers 1-0 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven semi-final series. The only goal of the game was scored when Leaf forward Bill Ezinicki redirected a Garth Boesch shot from the point past New York netminder Chuck Rayner. Broda was the difference in the game, particularily in a third period in which the Rangers repeatedly buzzed the Toronto cage and outshot the Leafs 12-3. The Leafs will look to complete the series sweep with wins on home ice in games 3 and 4 which are slated for Tuesday and Wednesday at Maple Leaf Gardens. Dewsbury's shot from the point with 1:31 remaining in regulation got through a maze of bodies and behind Montreal goaltender Bill Durnan to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 victory and a 2 games to one lead in their best of seven semi-final series with the Montreal Canadiens. After a scoreless first period in which Detroit outshot Montreal 14-8 the Red Wings made Montreal pay for a high sticking penalty on Leo Gravelle. Ted Lindsay's one-timer on the powerplay beat Durnan to the stick side and gave the Wings a 1-0 lead midway through the second period. Montreal evened the score 7 minutes into the third period as Maurice Richard notched his third goal of the series. Game 4 will be tonight in Montreal. As a result a one game playoff will be needed to determine the division winner. Chicago won a coin toss last week and will host the playoff game Monday evening. The Stags missed their chance to clinch the division when they fell 81-67 in Providence. Ernie Calverly had 17 points and Earl Shannon 16 for the upset minded Steamrollers. St Louis was beaten on its home court 56-52 by the Boston Celtics. Johnny Logan, with 16 points, was the only St Louis player to hit double figures in the game. There were two other games last night. In Detroit, the Falcons dropped Toronto 60-52 while Bob Feerick had 27 points as Washington won a shootout 104-90 over Cleveland. The Washington-Cleveland game had no bearing on the playoff picture so the two teams seemed to be content to play as little defense as possible. Only one playoff matchup is known. Philadelphia will open it's best of three quarterfinal series in Cleveland on Wednesday. Games two and three (if neccessary) will be Saturday and next Tuesday in Philadelphia. EDITOR'S NOTE - In one issue earlier I mistakenly wrote that St Louis and Chicago finish the season with a game on Monday. It was not that I had simmed ahead but rather because I was using the real BAA schedule for this season and St Louis and Chicago tied in real life, just like in my sim, for top spot and required a one game playoff. Amazingly, the little quick play program I used to sim the season gave me incredibly accurate results. Below are current standings with real life numbers added at the end. Code:

After Ben Hogan and Henry Cotton struggled through a very windy back nine at Miami Beach's Bayshore Golf Club Friday, the two had little trouble mastering the course on a calm day yesterday. Hogan shot a 7 under 65 while Cotton carded a 4 under 68. For those keeping track that gave the American Ryder Cup team captain an 8 stroke victory over his British counterpart in the two day event. However, it was more about raising money to get the British team to Portland for the September event than about competitive golf. PEP TO DEFEND WORLD FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE APRIL 26 Featherweight champion of the World Willie Pep will put his perfect 17-0 record and his title on the line April 26th against European Champion Ray Famechon. This will be the first title defense for Pep, who earned the belt last September after winning a 15-round unanimous decision over Sandy Saddler in the post-war tournament final. The Hartford native will defend his title close to home as the bout will be held at the Boston Gardens. Famechon, a native of France, won the European Title in December when he outpointed Finland's Ellis Ask. His postwar record is 25-11 including a loss to Pep by unanimous decision early in the postwar tournament. In other news, number one Bantamweight contender Luis Galvani of Cuba will face Mexican Luis Castillo in Mexico City this Tuesday. The 27 year old Galvani is coming off an impressive win over Manny Ortiz that improved his career record to 30-4-1. Castillo, a Mexico City native, is 27-11-3 and considered the 6th best bantamweight fighter in the world. The 25 year old has won his last 8 bouts against steadily improving competition. However, Galvani will be by far his biggest test. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DRAFT WATCH The NFL draft is just six days away but the Dallas Cowboys are still not tipping their hand as to who they will take with the first overall pick. It appears the Cowboys are still leaning towards taking Michigan defensive end Len *Ford but the Cowboys did bring Northwestern quarterback Otto *Graham in for a second workout over the weekend. However, the Cowboys also brought in former Pennsylvania DE George *Savitsky as well. One thing is for certain, if the Cowboys pass on Graham it is almost a certainty the Tampa Bay Bucs will grab the potential franchise quarterback with the second overall pick. Based on rumblings draft expert Syd Nyquist now feels the top 5 picks are expected to be: 1- Dallas: Len *Ford DE Michigan 2- Tampa: Otto *Graham QB Northwestern 3- New York Giants: George *Savitsky DE Penn 4- Green Bay: Ken Murphy CB USC 5- Carolina: Paul *Governalli QB Columbia IT'S APRIL! MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL JUST TWO WEEKS AWAY The 1947 major league baseball season opens two weeks from today. One game from each league will be played on Sunday April 15th, before the rest of the teams get started over the following couple of days. The National League season opens in Pittsburgh where the pennant winning Pirates will entertain the St Louis Cardinals on opening day. The Bucs return most of the pieces from their pennant winning squad including Cy Young Award winner Cliff Melton who will be the opening day starter. Melton won a career best 28 games a year ago to claim his 4th career Cy Young Award. The American League schedule opens in New York with the Yankees home to the St Louis Browns. The Browns will also be the visitor on Tuesday April 17th, when the World Series winning Cleveland Indians stage their season opener.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS THIRD PERIOD OUTBURST GIVES WINGS COMMANDING LEAD The Detroit Red Wings scored three goals in the third period to beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 and take a commanding 3 games to 1 lead in their best of seven NHL semi-final series. The Wings can wrap the series up with a win at home on Wednesday. The Canadiens took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Maurice Richard scored his fourth goal of the series. The Detroit powerplay evened things early in the third when Ted Lindsay scored his 4th goal of the playoffs. Roy Conacher, who scored twice in game one, broke the tie with the eventual game winner on a nice setup from Billy Taylor midway through the third period. Sid Abel iced the game for the Wings with an empty net tally. Chicago entertains St Louis this evening in a tiebreaker to determine the West Division regular season champion. Both teams finished with identical 38-22 records after 60 games. In last night's action Ed Sadowski had 17 points in a playoff tuneup as his Cleveland Rebels dumped Boston 67-62. Sadowski will finish second in the league scoring race behind Philadelphia's Joe Fulks. Fulks added 25 points to increase his league leading scoring average to 24.1 ppg as the Warriors topped New York 73-65. Philadelphia will open the playoffs at Cleveland on Wednesday. The Army running back led his club to a national title and rushed for 1761 yards and 15 touchdowns but that may not be enough to get him selected in the first round of Saturday's NFL draft. "I feel I have done everything I can," says the talented halfback. "Now it is out of my control." There is a good chance with the depth at other positions that only one or two running backs will be selected in the first round of the draft. Davis has some stiff competition in St Mary's RB Herm *Wedemeyer and Bob *Fenimore, the standout runner from Oklahoma A&M. A couple of Big 10 backs may also sneak into the first round: Michigan's Bob *Chappuis and Buddy *Young from Illinois. The most likely destination for Davis is Buffalo. The Bills lost RB Michael Williams to free agency and with the 10th pick are very likely to take a running back. It appears at this stage they favour Davis over Wedemeyer and Fenimore.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA CHICAGO WINS TIEBREAKER TO CLAIM WEST DIVISION TITLE Homecourt advantage helped the Chicago Stags trim the St Louis Bombers 70-67 in a thrilling 1-game playoff to determine the West Division champion. The victory moves Chicago into a best-of-7 semi-final series against the league's best team- the Washington Capitols. St Louis gets the consolation prize of an easier quarterfinal opponent. The Bombers will play New York in a best-of-3 with the winner advancing to the semi-finals against the winner of the Cleveland-Philadelphia series. Mickey Rottner led the Stags with 15 points, while Don Carlson added 13 and Max Zaslofsky chipped in 12. St Louis got 14 points each from Johnny Logan and Bob Doll while Belus Smawley had 13. Code:

The Leafs won the first two games in New York to take a stranglehold on the series. Toronto took the opener 5-1 behind two goals from rookie Howie Meeker. Turk Broda was the hero in game 2 backstopping the Leafs to a 1-0 win as Bill Ezinicki's second period goal accounted for all the scoring. The other series has Detroit leading Montreal 3 games to one. Game 5 in that series is tomorrow night at The Olympia. BOXING ROUND-UP A big fight in the bantamweight division this evening highlights the boxing activity for the week. Luis Galvani of Cuba, the number one contender for Canadian Fernando Gagnon's World Title, faces a stiff challenge in rising Mexican star Luis Castillo. It is a busy week for boxing fans. Thursday lightweight Enrique Bolanos defends his Mexican title against Mario Trigo in Acapulco. Bolanos is 14-1 with his only loss coming to World Lightweight Champion Ike Williams. Trigo is 13-4 and coming off a loss in Los Angeles to rising lightweight Art Aragon. Friday heavyweight Lee Q. Murray and Nino Valdes do battle in Hartford. Murray, a 28 year old from South Norwalk, Connecticut native is 10-2 and presently ranked 8th in his weightclass. The 23 year old Valedes is considered Cuba's top heavyweight fighter. His record is 18-3. Finally on Saturday, top middleweight contender Holman Williams fights Australian Dave Sands in Miami. Williams is 26-1 with his only loss coming to Jake LaMotta in the final of the postwar tournament. Sands is 29-6-1 but has only faced a handful of recognizable fighters. NFL DRAFT PREVIEW: TWO OUTSTANDING TIGHT ENDS LIKELY FIRST ROUND PICKS It is conceivable when Saturday's NFL draft is done that a pair of tight ends will have been selected in the top 5 of the draft. The New York Giants, Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers - picking third thru 5th - all have a need at tight end. Even if those clubs decide to address other needs then Atlanta at pick 6 or Buffalo at pick 10 may be in the market for a tight end. There are two tight ends that stand head and shoulders above the pack. Army's Hank *Foldberg had 36 catches and is an outstanding run blocker. He should be ready to step in right away and make an impact in the NFL. The other marquee tight end is Indiana's Pete *Pihos. Blessed with incredible hands Pihos may need some work on his blocking technique but has the potential to be an All-Pro. The knock on Pihos is that some question his work ethic. If a team does not grab one of those two players they will likely not be in the market for a tight end until at least the third round because beyond the first two there is just no talent available at the position. Which only seems to strengthen the draft position for Foldberg and Pihos.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS LEAFS TAKE 3-0 SERIES LEAD WITH WIN OVER RANGERS Bill Ezinicki and Bud Poile each scored twice as the Toronto Maple Leafs trimmed the New York Rangers 4-3 to take a commanding 3 games to none lead in the best of seven semi-final series. The Rangers scored first for the first time in the series as Rene Trudell gave New York a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. The lead, New York's first of the series, was shortlived as 50 seconds later Ezinicki tied the game. By the time the first period was over the Leafs had a 3-1 lead as Poile scored a pair of unassisted goals. Ezinicki made it 4-1 Toronto in the second period. The Rangers did mount a charge in a wide open third period as Church Russell and Cal Gardner scored to cut the Toronto lead to 4-3. However, Leaf goaltender Turk Broda held the fort in the final minutes to preserve the 4-3 Toronto victory. Code:

Cleveland hosts Philadelphia in game one of their best of 3 quarterfinal series. The key for Cleveland will be to shut down the league's leading scorer in Warriors forward Joe Fulks. The other quarterfinal also starts tonight with New York entertaining St Louis. The final series, a best of 7 semi-final between division winners Washington and Chicago opens in the nation's capital tomorrow night. BOXING NEWS: GALVANI MOVES A STEP CLOSER TO FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE SHOT Cuban fighter Luis Galvani looked extremely impressive in winning a unanimous decision over Mexican Luis Castillo in Castillo's hometown. Galvani took the fight to Castillo early and easily won the first three rounds. In round four the tide turned as Castillo worked to slow the fight down and turn it into a wrestling match. The Mexican had some success with that strategy until he began to tire around round 10. From there Galvani completely dominated and knocked Castillo down twice in the final round. Galvani is the number one contender in the featherweight division and is eyeing a matchup with titleholder Fernando Gagnon of Canada. NFL DRAFT PREVIEW: THE LINEMEN If you are a team in need of help at offensive tackle or defensive end than this is the draft for you. The latest mock draft from Syd Nyquist has 4 defensive ends and 4 offensive tackles projected to go in the first round of Saturday's NFL draft. There is a good chance the number one overall pick will be either Len *Ford of Michigan or George *Savitsky of Pennsylvania. It seems to be a foregone conclusion the Dallas Cowboys will take a defensive end first overall but the question remains which of these two very talented players do the Cowboys prefer? Ford's Michigan teammate Elmer *Mader may be the third defensive end taken in the first round and before the round ends Navy's Ben *Chase may also hear his name called. If those four are gone in round one a team can still grab a quality pass rushing defensive end in the second round. The top candidates include Harold *Fischer from tiny Southerwestern (Tx) and the Oregon duo of Richard Pricer and Eric Terrell. The offensive line may not have a top 10 pick but there are plenty of players worthy of a mid to late first round selection. First off the board will likely be Army's Tex *Coulter although Tom *Hughes of Purdue and Warren *Amling of Ohio State will also draw interest. Just a notch below those three are Army's Albert *Nemetz, Notre Dame's George *Connor and Mike *Castonis of Georgia.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS RED WINGS ELIMINATE CANADIENS WITH GAME FIVE VICTORY Billy Taylor and Ted Lindsay each had a goal and an assist to lead the Detroit Red Wings past the Montreal Canadiens 4-2. The victory gave the Red Wings the best-of-seven semi-final series in 5 games. Once again the big story for Detroit was the play of goaltender Harry Lumley. The Canadiens dominated for most of the game, outshooting Detroit 54-34, but Montreal could only put 2 goals past Lumley. The Red Wings struck quickly as Billy Taylor scored his first goal of the series just 41 seconds into the game and a minute later Ted Lindsay's power play marker made it 2-0. Montreal got one back late in the period on a Jimmy Peters goal but despite firing 24 shots on Lumley that was all the Canadiens could muster in the first stanza. The teams traded goals in the second period as Jim Conacher scored for Detroit while Billy Reay replied on the powerplay for Montreal. Midway through the third period Jack Stewart sewed things up for Detroit with his first marker of the playoffs. The Canadiens outshot Detroit 19-7 in a desperate third period but Lumley once again was a brick wall between the pipes. Detroit will meet the winner of the New York-Toronto series in the Stanley Cup Finals. Code:

Trailing 3 games to one it is a very faint pulse but the Rangers played with heart for the first time in the series as they easily manhandled the Maple Leafs 6-2. The series now shifts back to New York for Game 5 on Friday. The Leafs got on the scoresheet first as Harry Watson lit the lamp 5 minutes into the game but New York responded with a pair of goals of their own. The teams traded goals in the second period before the Rangers exploded for 3 goals in the final 20 minutes. Edgar Laprade led the New York offensive outburst with a goal and two assists while Tony Leswick had a pair of goals. The key for the Rangers was a pair of powerplay goals. The Leafs are the most penalized team in the league and through the first three games of the series the Rangers were unable to make Toronto pay for it's aggessiveness. The Rangers were 0-for-11 with the man advantage prior to last night when they finally broke through the Toronto penalty killing. Code:

The two clubs each hold a 1-0 lead in the short best-of-three quarter-final series. New York dropped St Louis 69-60 at Madison Square Garden behind a 13 point effort from guard Sidney Hertzberg. Game two in the series will be Sunday night at St Louis. In Cleveland, Joe Fulks made the last two of his 22 points on a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to play giving the visiting Philadelphia Warriors a 77-75 victory over the Rebels. Game 2 will be Saturday night in Philadelphia. The best-of-seven semi-final begins tonight in Washington with the East Division champion Capitols entertaining the West Division leading Chicago Stags. IS IT DALLAS OR TAMPA FOR OTTO GRAHAM? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made no attempt to hide their desire to draft Northwestern quarterback Otto *Graham and barring a trade by Dallas it looks like the Bucs will get Graham with the number two pick in Saturday's NFL draft. "The Cowboys have decided to go with a defensive end at number one and I highly doubt they will trade down," says TSN Daily draft guru Syd Nyquist. "Dallas loves both of the ends (Len *Ford and George *Savitsky) so they may consider moving down to pick three or four but would not risk go any lower for fear of losing them both. The Giants at pick three have said they will not trade up leaving just Green Bay, with the 4th pick,to throw a wrench into the Bucs plans. However, I cannot see the Packers willing to give up their second round pick to move up because Green Bay just has too many areas of need. As a result the Cowboys will take one of the defensive ends, likely Ford, leaving Graham for the Bucs." Graham has the potential to be another Sid *Luckman, the type of quarterback that can carry a team to a championship. He is a tremendous athlete, as proven by his ability to start at point guard for the Northwestern basketball team, and has an outstanding arm plus is a very good leader. Beyond Graham, there are three other quarterbacks who could in the first round. Frank *Albert of Stanford was outstanding in the senior all-star games after leading his school to a 7-2-1 record. Paul *Governali did not have a great supporting cast at Columbia but seems to have all the ingredients to be a solid pro. Charles *Trippi won the Maxwell Award and was a Heisman finalist and led Georgia to a perfect regular season before losing to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. RECEIVERS DROP THE BALL Early in the college season many were projecting this would be one of the strongest group of wide receivers in a draft class in quite sometime. However, a combination of poor postseason play and/or bad combine results have really soured most scouts on this group of wideouts. Hugh Taylor of Oklahoma and Roger Clark of Tennessee both dropped from potential top 10 picks to mid second rounders after posting some subpar 40 times at the combine. Barney *Poole of Army also suffered the same fate. "I would still expect 4 or 5 wideouts to go in the first round," explained Nyquist. "But now you will find them in the bottom of the round rather than the top. To be fair it is not all the players fault for the drop-off. Most of the teams picking in the top 15 have far greater needs than receiver." Look for Oklahoma's Don Schlereth, Hubert *Bechtol of Texas and Tulsa's Camp *Wilson to be the first receivers off the board. Jim Hawthorne of Clemson, Cincinnati's Elbie *Nichol and Army's Barney *Poole may also sneak into the first round. GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN TEES OFF TODAY The golf season gets into full swing today with the first official tournament of the year. The Greater Greensboro Open, a warm up to the Masters for nearly a decade, will be the first stop on the tour and the first event to receive the expanded TSN daily coverage in 1947. Unlike last year when we only focused on the 4 majors, TSN will provide coverage throughout the golf season of all 20 events plus the Ryder Cup. Sam Snead is the defending champion in the event, which once again will be held at the par 71 Starmount Country Club. Code:

Trigo is 13-4 and coming off a loss in Los Angeles to rising lightweight Art Aragon.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA PLAYOFFS WASHINGTON TOPS CHICAGO IN OPENER Bob Feerick had 19 points to lead the Washington Capitols to a 89-83 victory over the Chicago Stags in the opener of their best of seven semi-final series. The Capitols, who had the best record in the league during the regular season, built a big lead on the West Division champion Stags and then hung on for the victory. Game 2 will be Saturday night in Washington before the series shifts to Chicago for the next 3 games. Code:

The Rangers beat the Leafs 6-2 Wednesday to stay alive in the best of seven NHL semi-final series. However, Toronto still has a commanding 3 games to one lead and the Leafs took both games in Madison Square Garden to start the series. A New York win would force game six in Toronto tomorrow night while a Leaf victory would advance Toronto to the Stanley Cup Finals against Detroit. By the time it was over both fighter's looked like they had been through a war, and that wasn't far from the truth as it was one of the most active bouts of the year. Bolanos appeared to have the defense of his title well in hand until Trigo surprised him in the 10th with an uppercut that floored the Mexican Champion. Bolanos recovered enough to keep going but lost the dominance he had in the early rounds. One judge scored it 144-141 Bolanos, a second judge had it 143-142 Trigo while the final judge scored the bout 143-143. A rematch is expected and it will likely be held in mid-June. Tiger Fan is my hero! When I read his dynasty thread(s) it makes me laugh at the silly attempts I've made. You, sir, are the Willie Mays of dynasty reports...

Wow, thanks Dargone. I just try to find a league format that I find enjoyable to follow myself. It's flattering when others are interested in it as well.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS LEAFS FINISH OFF RANGERS WITH STUNNING COMEBACK IN GAME 5 Three goals in the final 5 minutes of the third period gave Toronto an improbable come from behind 5-4 victory that ended the New York Rangers season. The Rangers seemed to have the game well in hand up to that point, leading the Leafs 4-2 and totally dominating the play. The a nifty mid ice pass from Ted Kennedy sent Howie Meeker between the New York defense and in alone on Ranger netminder Chuck Rayner. The rookie made no mistake and suddenly the Leafs had life. Toronto buzzed the Rangers net looking for the equalizer and 2 minutes later Bob Goldham's screen shot from the point found it's way behind Rayner to tie the game. The Leafs, sensing the Rangers were ready to fold, were not content to wait for overtime and instead continued to push for the game winning goal. Some terrific forechecking forced Ranger rearguard Joe Cooper to cough the puck up in his own end and Gaye Stewart took advantage blasting a 40-footer past a stunned Rayner with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Stewart's goal gave the Leafs a 5-4 win and moved them into the Stanley Cup Finals against the Detroit Red Wings. NOTES: Both Toronto and Detroit won their first round playoff series in 5 games. The Stanley Cup Finals will begin in Detroit on Tuesday...Leaf goaltender Turk Broda was named the game's first star after making 46 saves...Bill Ezinicki led all scorers with 5 goals in the series. The deal would have sent young Packer QB Jordan Montana and the 4th pick overall to the Cowboys for the number one pick. According to draft guru Syd Nyquist the Cowboys were concerned that the Giants might grab Savitsky with the third pick so they did not want to risk trading down. The happiest team at the non-trade news must be Tampa Bay which will get the man the Packers had coveted in Northwestern QB Otto *Graham with the second pick. Next up will be the Giants and who they pick is anyone's guess. "New York has really played things close to the vest," explains Nyquist. "Many feel they will take either defensive lineman Len *Ford or Stanford QB Frank *Albert but I am hearing some rumbling about Pete *Pihos, the tight end from Indiana. The Giants certainly have needs at each of those positions." Green Bay wanted Graham but they will likely settle on Albert if the Giants bypass the signal-caller. TSN Daily will have a full analysis of today's draft in tomorrow's issue. BOXING LEE Q MURRAY MAKES A STATEMENT Heavyweight Lee Q Murray delighted the homestate crowd in Hartford by destroying Nino Valdes with a second round knockout. Murray was all over the Cuban, knocking him down 3 times in the second round after chasing him around the ring in the opening round. It was the 28 year old Murray's first real test against a top level opponent and he more than looked up to the challenge, stunning Valdes with a quick uppercut to start the fight and never looking back. Murray improves to 11-2 while Valdes, who entered the fight considered the third best heavyweight in the world, falls to 18-4. There is a big fight in Miami tonight as top middleweight contender Holman Williams fights Australian Dave Sands. Williams is 26-1 with his only loss coming to Jake LaMotta in the final of the postwar tournament. Sands is 29-6-1 but has only faced a handful of recognizable fighters. GOLF: GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN IRISHMAN DALY OPENS 3 STROKE LEAD Fred Daly shot a six under par 65 to take a 3 shot lead in golf's season opening event - the Greater Greensboro Open. Coupled with a 68 on Thursday, the 35 year old Daly is 9 under par, 3 shots ahead of Chandler Harper and Peter Thomson. Daly is an unlikely leader, playing in his first North American event. He began his golfing career as a caddie at Royal Portrush Club. At 17 he became professional at Mahee Island, leaving in 1946 to join Balmoral, Belfast before joining the tour this season. Code:

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DRAFT FEW SURPRISES IN NFL DRAFT AS SAVITSKY, GRAHAM GO 1-2 The first round of the NFL draft went as most experts expected it would, with the Dallas Cowboys starting things off by taking Pennsylvania DE George *Savitsky first overall and Tampa immediately grabbing franchise quarterback Otto *Graham second. The biggest surprise was Michigan defensive lineman Len *Ford lasting until the second round. Tampa got him 34th overall after most mock drafts felt he was a top five pick. A questionable work ethic is said to be the cause for the drop-off. The Bucs with Graham and Ford, appear to have walked away with by far the best draft class. Syd Nyquist will have a team by team recap during the week but for now here is the complete first round with Nyquist's thoughts on each selection. #1(1) Dallas George *Savitsky DE Pennsylvania This was the right pick for the Cowboys. #2(2) Tampa Bay Otto *Graham QB Northwestern A rare talent who will be all-pro sooner rather than later. #3(3) New York Pete *Pihos TE Indiana I think the Giants are going to disappointed with what *Pihos is going to be able to give them. Just my opinion. #4(4) Green Bay Frank *Albert QB Stanford The Packers coveted *Albert, and probably thought he would be taken before their spot came up. I'll bet they are ecstatic. #5(5) St. Louis Ken Murphy CB Southern California Could have an instant impact in St. Louis's defense scheme. #6(6) Atlanta Red *Cochran SS Wake Forest *Cochran grew up rooting for the Falcons, and now his dream comes true. #7(7) Minnesota Paul *Governali QB Columbia Consensus was that *Governali would go right about here. #8(8) Seattle Glen *Davis RB Army Has "Franchise Player" written all over him. #9(9) Jacksonville John *Podesto CB Pacific The Jaguars were salivating when they saw *Podesto was still available here. #10(10) Buffalo Hank *Foldberg TE Army What were they thinking? There were better guys on the board. #11(11) Detroit Elmer *Mader DE Michigan *Mader wanted to play in Detroit, and now he'll get his chance. #12(12) Cincinnati Russell Johnson ILB Georgia Tech The Bengals coveted Johnson, and probably thought he would be taken before their spot came up. I'll bet they are ecstatic. #13(13) Miami George *Connor OT Notre Dame This was a smart move for the Dolphins, given their needs at OT. #14(14) Carolina Herman *Wedemeyer RB St. Mary's Panthers addresses need at RB with former St. Mary's standout *Wedemeyer. #15(15) New York Albert *Nemetz OT Army Jets played the numbers, and went with *Nemetz here. #16(16) San Diego Bob *Fenimore RB Oklahoma A&M No one expected San Diego to pass him up, but many scouts still aren't sold on *Fenimore. #17(17) Baltimore Vance Steele FS Boston College Didn't need a FS, and didn't get the best one on the board. Bad pick. #18(18) Indianapolis Bob *Chappis RB Michigan Colts gets a gifted RB who should contribute immediately. #19(19) New Orleans Neil *Armstrong CB Oklahoma A&M Will fit in just nicely in New Orleans. #20(20) Oakland Camp *Wilson WR Tulsa A good upgrade for Baker's offense. #21(21) Washington Ben *Chase DE Navy The Redskins worked out *Chase privately a few weeks ago, and obviously liked what they saw. #22(22) Arizona Hubert *Bechtol WR Texas Cardinals snags a good WR at a good spot in the draft. #23(23) Houston Bob *Ravensberg ILB Indiana A good upgrade for McKinney's defense. #24(24) New England Tom Morris CB Brigham Young With a late surge up the draft boards, Morris lands with Patriots in the 1 round. #25(25) Philadelphia Harold *Fischer DE Southwestern Eagles played the numbers, and went with *Fischer here. #26(26) San Francisco Don Schlereth WR Oklahoma This guy has superstar potential, and I will really be interested to see how he develops over his career. #27(27) Tennessee Charles *Trippi QB Georgia What were they thinking? There were better guys on the board. #28(28) Kansas City Weldon *Humble DT Rice *Humble wanted to play in Kansas City, and now he'll get his chance. #29(29) Pittsburgh Bob *Forte OLB Arkansas *Forte is a really good fit for this defense #30(30) Denver Elbie *Nichol WR Cincinnati I didn't really see WR as a top need for Broncos, but *Nichol is a good talent who could contribute. #31(31) Cleveland Jim Hawthorne WR Clemson Hawthorne was well-coached at Clemson, and will need the same kind of nurturing in Cleveland to succeed at the pro level. #32(32) Chicago Tom *Hughes OT Purdue I didn't really see OT as a top need for Bears, but *Hughes is a good talent who could contribute. BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA PLAYOFFS WARRIORS ELIMINATE CLEVELAND WITH 87-82 VICTORY Joe Fulks had 27 points and Howie Dallmar added 13 as the Philadelphia Warriors completed a 2-game sweep of the Cleveland Rebels with an 87-82 win in Philadelphia. Ed Sadowski had another strong game in a losing effort for the Rebels, scoring 20 points. Philadelphia will meet the winner of the New York-St Louis series in a best of 3 semi-final. The Knicks lead 1-0 with game 2 in St Louis tonight. Washington has taken a 2 game lead in their best of seven semi-final with Chicago however the victory came at a price. The Capitols lost both Freddie Scolari and John Mahnken with injuries. Each is expected to miss at least a game or two. As for the game, Bob Feerick had 18 points and Scolari 16 in an 80-66 Washington win. Game 3 is set for Tuesday in the Windy City. Code:

Williams, who's only loss came to Jake LaMotta for the middleweight championship of the world, won a unanimous decision by wearing down Sands and taking the fight to the Australian in the later rounds. Sands' strategy was to get to Williams early and with 26 knockouts in 36 career fights entering the night, Williams had to respect the right hand of Sands. With the victory Williams seems to put himself in line for a shot at Tony Zale, who beat LaMotta for the middleweight belt in January. Below are the top 10 Middleweights in the World Code:

Friday's leader, Irishman Fred Daly shot a two over 73 and sits 5 strokes off the pace, tied with Keiser. Another dissappointing season comes to an end for the New York Rangers as once more fans are left wondering what went wrong. The taste is so much more bitter this time around. Just two weeks ago the playoffs seemed so full of promise as the Rangers prepared for their first postseason in 5 years. After 4 straight seasons finishing dead last, Chuck Rayner looked like the second coming of Davey Kerr and the balanced offense seemed immune to a slump. A second place finish meant a first round match-up against undisciplined Toronto. With Raynor's goaltending and a solid power play the question was not would the Rangers win the series, but rather would they sweep Toronto in 4 games? Instead, it was Toronto that nearly pulled off the sweep. The Leafs were true to form, taking bad penalty after bad penalty, but the Rangers offense was downright offensive. Team scoring leader Grant Warwick was no where to be found, not recording even a single point in the 5 games. Tony Leswick scored twice in the only win but accomplished little the rest of the series. Ab Demarco and Alfie Pike also did next to nothing. In net, Chuck Rayner was just plain ordinary. After recording 7 shutouts and the second best goals against average in the league, he was positively awful in game one and like the rest of the team, fell apart late in the final game. Well, good fans of New York. Another year of mediocre hockey was thrust upon us. It seemed much easier to take the last 4 seasons when the Rangers were so bad no one cared. However, to let us down so badly in a season so full of promise is just so much harder to take. Remember the year 1940. Hard to believe that was our last Cup win. Seven years is far too long. Byerly pitched a couple of innings of relief for the Cards last season but spent most of the year in AAA where he was 2-1 with a 2.81 era. Going to St Louis are 26 year outfielder Hoot Evers and a pair of minor leaguers. Evers hit .320 in spot duty as a rookie with Detroit a year ago and will likely get a chance to play everyday in St Louis. The minor leaguers are 26 year old reliever Dick Conger, who has never pitched above Class AA, and first baseman John McHale. McHale hit .230 with no homeruns in 118 games at Class A a year ago. His future may be in management but it certainly won't be as a major league first baseman. PHILLIES AND YANKS MAKE DEAL The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees exchanged a couple of minor league players yesterday to fill out their AAA rosters. Reliever Max Macon, who split last season between the Cardinals, Yankees and AAA Kansas City was dealt to the Phils for first baseman Jack Boiling. The 30 year old Boiling, who hit .226 in 323 career games with the Phillies over the last 9 years, will get the starting job in New York after the Yankees released 35 year old Buddy Hassett. Hassett, who hit just .243 a year ago, was picked up by the Cardinals.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : MONDAY APRIL 9, 1947
NFL DRAFT REVIEW PATS AND SEAHAWKS TOP AFC DRAFT RANKINGS TSN draft guru Syd Nyquist says New England and Seattle came away with the best draft among the AFC clubs. Both clubs were given a grade of A while at the other end of the spectrum 4 AFC teams received failing marks from the outspoken Nyquist. Here is his take on how each of the AFC teams fared. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS : GRADE A The Pats traded up to grab BYU cornerback Tom Morris with their first round pick. Morris might need a year as a back-up but Nyquist feels he will be an outstanding NFL defensive back. Wide receiver was not really an area of need but when Oklahoma's Hugh *Taylor was still available late in the second round the Pats grabbed him. He had been touted as a likely first round pick but a poor combine caused Taylor to slide. Other players to watch are fourth round pick RB Bob *Jenkins from Navy and 7th round pick Fred Coleman: a big strong, receiver from Kentucky. BOTTOM LINE - Getting Taylor in the second round wa a huge coup. Morris will match up against opponent's number one receivers for years to come. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS : GRADE A The Seahawks went offense with this draft, trading up to grab Heisman Trophy winner Glen *Davis in the first round. The Army running back has the potential to be a franchise player but the selection really puts a question mark on last year's number one pick Marion *Motley. Motley struggled through a terrible rookie season but it is surprising the Seahawks would give up on him so quickly. Tulsa QB Clyde *LeForce was the Seahawks third round pick. He is considered a project but has some potential. The pick Nyquist really loved was 4th round selection Roger Clark. The former Tennesse wideout should never have lasted until the fourth round and said after being selected there were a lot of teams he wanted to prove wrong for bypassing him. BOTTOM LINE: Nyquist says they earn the A because of the talent they added, however they had some big needs on both the offensive and defensive line that went unfilled. BALTIMORE RAVENS :GRADE A- 3rd round pick RB Dick *Hoerner from Iowa may end up being the plum of this draft for the Ravens. He will likely spend this season as Fabien Montgomery's backup but Nyquist expects big things from Hoerner. Think defense first is always Baltimore's motto so it is no surprise that the Ravens added FS Vance Steele in the first round. The former Boston College starter will step right in a solidify what was a weak spot last season. Oregon defensive end Eric Terrell was the Ravens second round pick and he also should be starting this season. The sleeper pick is 5th rounder Shelton Wiley. The former Fresno State signal caller may have a solid career ahead of him. BOTTOM LINE - A strong defense got a little better and Hoerner will press Montgomery for the starting role. PITTSBURGH STEELERS : GRADE B First round pick Bob *Forte is ready to step in immediately at outside linebacker. The former Arkansas star was a steal at pick 29. Second rounder Art *McCaffrey, a tackle from Pacific, has a good chance to start this season. Former Penn State defensive end Drew Adamson is a solid talent for a third round pick, but the Steelers did not have a need at the position. Choo-Choo *Roberts from UTEP and Northwestern's Max *Morris will challenge incumbant Mickey Marangi for playing time at halfback. BOTTOM LINE: A great draft for the Steelers. Not only did they trade down twice and grab two extra third round picks but they also filled a big hole with the selection of Forte in the first round. BUFFALO BILLS : GRADE B The Bills wanted RB Davis but Seattle beat them to the punch. However, Buffalo did land a nice consolation prize in Illinois RB Buddy *Young. The second round pick will be given every opportunity to start in Buffalo. Army TE Hank *Foldberg was the Bills first rounder and he will also be a starter. The Bills grabbed North Carolina QB DeMarco Dickinson but it might have been a bit of a reach as Dickinson does not seem well suited for the pro game. Defensive ends George *Strohmeyer of Notre Dame and Washington Serini of Kentucky will compete for a starting role. BOTTOM LINE - Addressed needs very well. Young and Foldberg both could become All-Pro's at positions the Bills desperately needed an upgrade. CINCINNATI BENGALS : GRADE B The Bengals were ecstatic to get LB Russell Johnson with the 12th pick. The former Georgia Tech standout has all-star written all over him. Second round pick Mike *Castonis may need some work but the Georgia offensive tackle has tremendous upside. Oregon State fullback Ken Williams, their third rounder, will challenge for a starting job. 7th rounder Bart Butler from West Virginia is not the most talented player but few in the league will outwork him. BOTTOM LINE - Three outstanding picks. MIAMI DOLPHINS : GRADE B- The Dolphins did a great job upgrading both the offensive and defensive lines. Notre Dame offensive tackle George *Connor was a solid selection at pick 13. He will greatly improve the Dolphins line. On the defensive front four you have Oregon defensive end Richard Pricer, who saw his stock drop greatly in the weeks leading up to the draft. Pricer still looks like a solid second round pick. With their second pick of the 2nd round the Dolphins added defensive tackle Ray Apple from Baylor. There is a good chance both Pricer and Apple are starting come September. Third round pick Quincy Mabry seems to be a reach. The Virigina quarterback may have a hard time adjusting to the pro game. Cornerback Frank *Seno from George Washington adds depth at safety. BOTTOM LINE : Dolphins did a good job addressing their needs. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS : GRADE C+ The Jags greatly enhanced their secondary with the addition of Pacific cornerback John *Podesto and BYU free safety Marcel Clatterbuck. Notre Dame defensive tackle Howard Gaiter may also contribute. Taking Army QB Arnold *Tucker in the fourth seems like a reach. BOTTOM LINE - Podesto should help but the jury is out on Clatterbuck. No one else of value was added. TENNESSEE TITANS : GRADE C+ Nyquist was all over the Titans on draft day for taking Georgia QB Charles *Trippi in the first round. Trippi has some potential but the Titans had a huge hole to fill at offensive tackle and would have been far better off taking Purdue's Tom *Hughes who went 5 picks later to the Bears. Aside from second round pick cornerback Todd Betterson from Auburn, the Titans draft was unimpressive. They include LB Brendan Dockery from UNLV, WR Roy Williams from USC and tackle Rashad Piccone from Cal. BOTTOM LINE - Trippi may become a solid QB but the far bigger need on the line went unaddressed. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS : GRADE C+ The Chargers entered the draft with the goal of getting a solid running back in the first round. Mission accomplished with the selection of Oklahoma A&M's Bob *Fenimore who instantly improves one of the worst running games in the league. Second round pick Dick *Duden, a linebacker from Navy, has talent but is raw. The Chargers for some unknown reason took two QB's - Les *Horvath of Ohio State and Hawaii's Dalton Fonoti in the third and 4th rounds - despite having just signed free agent Justin Jackson to a big contract. 6th round pick Josh Phelps, a fullback from Central Florida and 5th rounder WR Darian Lewis of New Mexico State may contribute on special teams. BOTTOM LINE -a good first two picks but the third and fourth round selections were wasted on middle of the road quarterbacks. NEW YORK JETS : GRADE C Steve *Van Buren must be one of the happiest men in New York today. The Jets star running back saw his club grab two punishing blockers over the weekend in first round pick Albert *Nemetz, a tackle from Army and second round pick Ohio State guard Bill *Hackett. Unfortunately the rest of the Jets draft looks suspect. South Carolina DT Mike Turner, the third round pick, lacks consistancy. Former Penn State QB Chris Caravello is a back-up at best and a real stretch in the fourth round. BOTTOM LINE : Nemetz and Hackett will help but the rest of the draft was wasted. HOUSTON TEXANS : GRADE C Bob *Ravensberg and Joe Highsmith give the Texans one of the best group of linebackers in the league. Ravensberg, taken 23rd overall from Indiana, will be groomed to replace 11 year veteran Hunter Collins in the middle while second rounder Highsmith, from Baylor, may start right away on the outside. Third round pick Jerry Henley from San Diego State will join the mess of players trying to replace departed QB Vaughn Diedrick. Fourth rounder Walt *Schlinkman from Texas Tech will be a decent receiver. BOTTOM LINE : Ravensberg and Highsmith are both exceptional talents but the Texans ignored their needs in the secondary. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS : GRADE D+ Rice defensive tackle Weldon *Humble is a steady player but does not have the upside of most other first rounders. The addition of second rounder Vaughn *Mancha, a center from Alabama, fills a huge void on the Chiefs offensive line. Third round Robbie Lebetter, from UC-Davis, is a real project at safety. The other picks are all unlikely to contribute including WR Jeremy Sayers from Georgia Tech, Notre Dame CB Jay Rambo and Florida State RB Jerry Jackson. BOTTOM LINE : Mancha is a fantastic pick for the Chiefs but the rest of the selections are questionable. CLEVELAND BROWNS : GRADE D Picking 31st makes it tough to get a great talent but the Browns could have done far better than Clemson WR Jim Hawthorne with their first rounder. Georgia cornerback John Haynes also seems to be a bit of a reach in round two. There are concerns about the durability of TE Mike Vincent, the Browns third round pick from USC. Fourth rounder OJ Jackson from Penn State looks to be a solid backup DT and 5th rounder Morris Adams, a former Notre Dame CB, may become the best player the Browns selected in this draft. BOTTOM LINE : A terrible draft for the Browns. If I was allowed to hand out an E they would get one. OAKLAND RAIDERS : GRADE D First round pick Camp *Wilson, a wide receiver from Tulsa, was a solid selection but the rest of the Raiders draft left most observers shaking their heads. Navy QB Tom Maddox went about 2 rounds to early when the Raiders took him in the second round. Notre Dame guard John *Mastrangelo is a big project, likely too big for a third round pick. Oregon State DT Tyrone Denney may have a shot to stick with the Raiders, which is likely more than can be said for the remaining picks. BOTTOM LINE : Wilson is a good pick but the rest of the draft was wasted. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS : GRADE D First round pick Bob *Chappuis is surrounded by questions. Can the former Michigan running back stand up to a season of punishment in the NFL? If he does he will be a solid player but his durability is a huge question mark. For that reason the Colts may find themselves wishing they took a back like Buddy *Young instead of Chappuis. Second round pick Ralph *Serpico of Illinois, may compete for a starting role. 5th round pick Dexter Thompson, a cornerback from Duke, is a player to watch. BOTTOM LINE : Took a big risk on Chappuis' durability and the rest of the draft wa unimpressive. DENVER BRONCOS : GRADE D Taking Elbie *Nichol, a wide receiver from the University of Cincinnati, was an easy decision although the Broncos really did not need another receiver. Tony *Minisi, the cornerback from Pennsylvania has some potential but the rest of the class is quite weak. BOTTOM LINE - Could of used some depth on the offensive and defensive lines but they ignored it except for third round Henry Thomas from Washington State, and he was picked far too early. GOLF: GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN REES HANGS ON FOR WIN BUT AMATEUR NEARLY STEALS THE SHOW Dai Rees shot a 1-under par 70 in yesterday's final round of the Greater Greensboro Open. It was good enough to give the Welshman a victory at the Starmount Country Club but just barely. An unknown 21 year old amateur by the name of Bob Rosburg shot a 64 on the final day and finished just one stroke back of Rees. Rosburg was so impressed with his showing he decided immediately after the event he will turn pro for his next event which will be the Masters in Augusta. Rees entered the final round with a 3 stroke lead on Jimmy Demaret. Demaret, teamed with Rees in the final pairing, equalled the 1 under par 70 recorded by the champion. With the victory, Rees earns the $7500 winners cheque and an automatic entry in the year end Tournament of Champions. Next week's event will be the Masters at Augusta. Code:

COLLEGE BASKETBALL IOWA'S ALL-AMERICAN ELLEFSON SKIPPING SENIOR SEASON Ray Ellefson, the All-American center from Iowa, has decided to give up his college eligibility a year early and enter the BAA draft. A likely first round pick, the 6'9" center led the Big 10 in rebounds with 15.9 per game and scored at a 15.4 clip. He led Iowa to a 22-13 record and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. He was the only junior named to this year's All-America Team. Code:
