Yeah, I checked. He killed it in 1980. Man, that trade of Freddie Lynn still hurts me all these years later... Also, the import of him comes up as Caucasian so that's a database error on someone's part. The brooks001cra.fg file obviously overwrites that regardless

The good news is that the Sox got Carney Lansford in the Lynn trade, and a batting title. But with Wade Boggs in the pipeline, they didn't exactly need a high-BA 3B. You'd think they'd do a better job of scouting their own prospects.
Although idk what they should have asked the Angels for, instead. Sconiers? Rick Colbert had a nice year at Winston-Salem in 1980 as well, but he fizzled every time he got a sniff of AAA (5 clubs in 4 years), so it's no wonder he never took that last step. Still "catcher" and "good 1980 season" is enough for the AI to consider him as Fisk's backup, so… Lots of other pics, from his later days as a coach and manager in the Cardinal chain, but idk if you wanted those. |

I saw the ones with him as a coach, older and more full in the face. In the end, I worked with this one and added a texture overlay - all the pictures of him would require one as blowing up the face results in a significant increase in pixels cluttering the image. Here's the best I could do. Alternatively, you could go sign Gary Allenson who did just fine in my childhood memory of that team. At least the Sox mailed Fisk his contract on time in your sim (I presume!)

The Pudge is in the Mail!
Yes, the Sox kept Fisk, but Gary Allenson is only hitting .200 at Pawtucket, so that's why Colbert got his shot. And Gedman went to Baltimore as part of the package for Scott MacGregor (who's been excellent and is in his prime), so this could be an issue going forward.
(Also Harbor-bound: Bobby Ojeda and Chico Walker. And Barry Butera [father of Blake], whom I can't find a usable pic of, but who tore up my Rangers on their last visit.) Aaron Cain tore up the Northwest League with the independent Grays Harbor Loggers in 1980 (far outperforming teammates Mark Parent and Luis Quinones) and then had a decent year at Amarillo in '81. But he flopped at AAA Hawai'i in '82 and that was it. The Milwaukee AI in the game is giving him a shot at a utility job, though. But I don't know if the one picture I've found is enough, however. Let me know if you need to pass; I'll understand. Last edited by Amazin69; 06-01-2021 at 09:39 PM. |

This is a really tough one. The import of Aaron has the wrong birthdate and says Caucasian which wasn't what the card implied to me he might be but maybe he's got a tan and a late 70s/early 80s scraggly beard. Either way, to lose the red shoulder in his face, you need to apply one of those overlays to his face. Not happy with it, but here's the best I could so for the young man... I can edit and repost if there are suggestions for nips, tucks or tones to be adjusted...

Much better than I could have done, certainly.
Fine work. And what's with the game miscoding "African" players as other ethnicities? I've noticed it never happens the other way around…
Eugenio Cotes got his first name misspelled by the game, and they think he's "Hispanic" just because he's Dominican. I guess they never heard of Dominican blacks, is that it? IRL Cotes tore up AA Buffalo in 1980, but fizzled when he reached AAA Portland and was dumped. Here they started him in AAA, gave him a sniff up top, and then sent him to Milwaukee as partial payment for John Poff. Mediocre results thus far, but even holding a big-league job deserves some plaudits, IMO. Cool that he made an actual Topps card, but I doubt the dark picture and angled head will help much. Sorry. |

Yep, close but no Sister Sledge.
Larry Rush was consistent during his four seasons at AAA…but mediocre (around .750 OPS) so it's not surprising the Brewers were in no hurry to give him that final bump. In the game, Yount and Cooper left in free agency and Molitor's out for the year (busted kneecap), so opportunity is knocking, after all. |

Well, another database error. Not a Caucasian. I'm still trying to take in the fact that Robin Yount left via free agency... Here's Larry...

Yeah, these "Caucasians" are a plague on the land. I don't need a facegen for Oil Can Boyd, but apparently he's one, too. Sigh.
Hey, Yount got paid. 6 yrs/almost $1 million per. I told you, the Yankees signed everyone. (Okay, not everyone. Winfield's a Dodger. And somebody down in Texas *cough* thought he had a fine offseason to build on that 94-68 and division title…and now the Rangers are sub-.500 halfway through. Sigh.) Dan Fischer put up good numbers at AAA Omaha in 1980 and 1982, albeit he wobbled a bit in '81. But he never got the tap. In the game, he was a poor fill-in (7-15, high ERA) for an injured Dennis Leonard in KC in 1980, but is doing great at Omaha this year (11-3, 2.40) as the parent club rebuilds its staff. (Leonard/Gura/Splittorff gone, Candelaria/Montefusco/Flanagan in.) And with Flanagan (and Tom Candiotti) hurt, he's getting another chance up top. First two starts were still rocky, though. The current "Dan Fischer" (Flagler College) must be a relative. They look like clones. Last edited by Amazin69; 06-03-2021 at 02:11 PM. |

Ummm…Brett's still playing on AstroTurf, does that count?
Sorry. #5 is playing the 5 in 3 Rivers these days. (Bill Madlock's gone to play 2B for Oakland.)
If you're looking for loyal 3Bs, Doug DeCinces re-upped in Baltimore. And you'll probably be pleased to hear that Cecil Cooper's free agency brought him back to Boston. (The Sox are rather loaded, but I still don't trust a rotation with the likes of Torrez and Rainey backing up Eck and MacGregor.) Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, my Rangers just lost to a 13th-inning walk-off HR by Joe Charboneau. Thus dropping us to 0-6 against the Tribe for the season. (Our record against the Angels also sucks.) If you can't beat those guys… And, at 2B for Cleveland, Ken Barton! Sure IRL he capped three seasons of progress at AA with a nice .306/.404/.452 for Chattanooga in 1980, but flopped at AAA Charleston in 1981 and was told to find a new career. (He really hasn't; still working as a hitting instructor all these years later.) But come on, who's he battling here? Kuiper? Dybzinski? Dave Rosello? Kevin Rhomberg? The AI giving the switch-hitter with the sweet 'stache a shot is hardly a shock, considering their other "options". |

I had to use a picture from when he was in the Giants organization (sans mustache and when he went by Kenny, not Ken) to get the head angle correct. facegen hates mustaches when the head is turned. It's a good likeness but if you prefer the early 80's mustache, I recommend using the facegen and then manually adding a walrus or other full-ish one to him. I posted two pics in game. One with and one without the 'stache. Enjoy!

If someone can collect any of these you find and post them in the historical db bugs thread it would be much appreciated, and we can make the changes: https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...=325442&page=4
For the minor league players in the historical db especially, we have no access to ethnicity data from our sources, so a lot of them are surely wrong. When you find any that are, please do let us know so we can fix them.

Hi Lukas,
I'll post them as I go. I put the Baseball Reference identifiers of the ones I've found of late. Thanks for pointing us to the correct place!

I'll also keep an eye out for "Caucasians", Lukas.
The Tribe completed a second sweep of my Rangers. Dave Garcia sent Kevin Rhomberg (batting .165 at the time) up to hit for Charboneau, for whatever reason. Naturally, he singled Toby Harrah to third, where he scored on a sac fly by Larry Littleton (career average of .000 IRL) to beat us. Sigh. Part of Cleveland's futility against everyone but us is that most of their staff left in free agency. Denny's throwing well for the Yankees (I told you, they signed everybody), Waits threw that perfecto for the Phils (Kansas City just traded their HR leader [Ken Phelps] to add Waits; back to Omaha for Dan Fischer), and Spillner's been…adequate for the Cardinals. Which means that Cleveland has had to put the likes of Butch Edge and Odell Jones in the rotation, with predictable results. And then, in the realm of complete fantasy, there's Dane Anthony. Now Anthony had several good seasons at single-A Waterloo, and in 1981, he pitched in the very first game in the history of the Hagerstown Suns, taking a no-hitter into the 7th (Hagerstown was a co-op team that year, winning the pennant with Grady Little at the helm)…but IRL he never had any success at AA or above. Dane Anthony ended up going into law-enforcement (longtime sheriff of Franklin County [PA]) and IMO he should arrest the "Dane Anthony" the Cleveland AI is so attached to for impersonating a major leaguer. But so it goes. Another sign of Tribal Trouble is that they've thrown Gary Hinson, who also never really succeeded above A-ball, into the mix at second base. But, as noted, they really don't have any better options there. And at least he has a mustache to compete with Ken Barton's: I'm pleased to note that, as of 2017, Hinson is alive and well, still has his mustache, and looks much the same. I'm less pleased to note that Hinson's 2017 picture was online because he got picked up for DWI with an expired license in Charlotte. Sheriff Dane Anthony needs to straighten out his old teammate from Waterloo, methinks. Last edited by Amazin69; 06-06-2021 at 11:09 AM. |

Here's Dane who despite the addition of a necessary texture pack to eliminate the teeth that became facegen's big top lip of his... is still quite cheerful.

Gary, alas, still looks like a mugshot waiting to happen. He was also arrested in 2019 for dine-and-dash and a stolen laptop. But here he is, still a world of opportunity before him. Here's hoping for better things for him...

Lol, "a mugshot waiting to happen". Sad, but true.
(I wish I could "dine and dash". Hobbling with this cane because my quadriceps quit on me is for the birds!) Someone else with leg issues was 1975 Cubs #1 pick Brian Rosinski. The local boy (Evanston, home of Northwestern) was selected #4 overall and had a good rookie season, but then suffered a hamstring injury at Pompano Beach in 1976, which set him back several years. Eventually, he had a strong year at AAA Wichita in 1980 (.944 OPS) and when the team traded Barry Foote to the Yankees the following year, it looked as though that open roster spot was Rosinski's ticket to the show. Except that Rosinski hurt the hamstring again, Gary Krug got the call-up in his place, Brian sulked to a miserable season at Iowa (.697) and was released. Sic Transit Gloria Wichita… Here, the Cubs AI is enamored of whiff machines like Rosinski (137 Ks last year, on pace for 166 in '81), Karl Pagel, and Fritzie Connally. Which seems much of a muchness, even if Rosinski's .288 BA is second on the club behind #1 Overall draft pick Tony Gwynn. I mean, if the Cubs wanted this, they could have kept Kingman. (Dave's in St. Louis, leading the Cards in HR despite not being able to get a regular lineup slot.) And it's one thing to decide that Bill Buckner is getting pushed out…but sending him to the White Sox for Leo Sutherland, even up?? It's brilliant decisions like this that keep the Mets confident they won't end up any lower than 5th place… |

Just finished reading the ESPN story on him. Glad he got back to the game through coaching. Tough break. I see he is now head of parks at the Ridgeville Park District. Good for him. I'm rooting for him in the show. The other thing I learned is there needs to be a closed door meeting in Arlington about how Texas can start trading with the Cubs... Anyway, here's Brian...
