July 29th, 1975

SP Eric Marksallowed 2 runs on 7 hits with 10 strikeouts over 7 innings in a greatperformance. C Nate Samms hit asolo HR, his 15th HR of the year in the loss.

Luckily for the Exposthe Pirates lost to Atlanta 7-3 and the Cardinals lost to the Reds6-2 so that standings remain the same. The Expos chances are now61.7% to win the NL East, Pittsburgh is 31.0 % and the Cardinals dropto 7.3%.

5 hits in a pennant race when thepitchers are pitching there brains out and the hitters can score runsaint going to cut it. The Expos had 5 singles in their final regularseason home game. Expos SP Jamari Taftallowed 0 runs on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts over 5.2 innings. REL DaveMarland (0-1) took the loss.

The Pirates lost 11-5 to the Braveswhile the Cardinals beat the Reds 3-2. There is a 3-way tie for theNL East. The Expos have a 50.6%chance to win, the Pirates 28.3% and the Cardinals 21.0% based onschedule.

July 31st, 1975
Philadelphia 5 Montreal2
Another game, another loss. Expos SPScott Turner (6-6) allowed 2 runson 5 hits with 5 Ks over 6 innings but the offense couldn't pick himup. 1B Matt Terry had 3 hits in alosing cause.

The good news, everyone else in the NLEast is crappy too. Pittsburgh losses to the Dodgers 5-3 in 15innings, the Cardinals lose 1-0 with the Padres scoring in the bottomof the 9th. Expos chances now55.7%, Pirates 24.8% and the Cardinals 19.5%. Is it possible that.500 will win the division?

August 1st, 1975
Philadelphia 11 Montreal2
Another loss, this is getting hard towatch. SP Javier Trevino (11-6)allowed 3 runs on 8 hits over just 5.1 innings. The pen gives up 8runs in the 2 final innings. Offense amounts to 6 hits. How does ateam that was playing over .600 ball for most of the season suddenlygo 8-21 in the last 29. The Exposwere 41-29 at the 70 game mark.

St Louis beat the Padres 3-2 and thePirates got shelled 9-2. The Cardinals have a 1 game lead on both thePirates and Cardinals.

August 2nd, 1975
Philadelphia 3 Montreal1
The Expos lose all five of their finalgames and basically blow the NL East pennant. Expos SP EddieHernanez (3-3) allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with 8 Ks over 7innings. The Expos managed just 6 hits, all singles as this offseason will be about locating some offense.

The Pirates lost to the Dodgers 11-3and the Cardinals beat the Padres 6-2 to win the NL East by 2 games. The Expos have missed theplayoffs for the 5th consecutive year. While the Cardinals have wonthe NL East for the 3rd time in 6 seasons.

A very frustrating finish to the season. The offense dried up and the bull pen blew up. Definitely will see some changes to the lineup next season. More on that after the playoffs.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Trevino, Javier 29 11-6 2.33 22 154 100 1.02 5.8
Marks, Eric 27 7-8 3.71 21 140 111 1.24 7.1

Turner, Scott 29 6-6 2.97 17 115 65 1.20 5.1
Hernanez, Eddie 22 3-3 1.77 8 61 45 0.89 6.6

The strength of the team and all will be back next season and have a chance in the rotation.

Montreal Relievers AGE W-L ERA Save IP K WHIP K/9
Jones, Robbie 30 5-2 2.79 0 38 62 1.34 14.4
Beasley, Aidan 25 2-2 3.90 0 30 36 1.17 10.8
Rancourt, Charlie 30 0-3 2.67 21 27 33 1.07 11.0

Lopez, Danny 26 0-0 0.00 0 1 0 0.00 0.0

Robby Jones and Charlie Rancourt will be free agents. Not likely that we will reach a deal with Rancourt as he is looking for northward of $7.0 per season. The pen will have to be much better next season.

Montreal Catchers AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Samms, Nate 34 80 310 15 48 .261 .789 0
Capellan, David 23 9 33 1 4 .152 .489 0
Shvartsman, Ricky 26 8 19 1 2 .316 .883 1

The big question is will we be able to resign Nate Samms. The popular Expos in looking for just under $9.0 M for 4 years at age 34.

Montreal Infielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Watkins, Gene 29 94 352 7 38 .264 .686 0
Sanchez, David 24 70 266 3 19 .241 .622 22
Martinez, Fernando 32 83 240 3 26 .279 .714 0
Delgado, Tony 22 64 209 1 11 .239 .635 12

Nichols, Chris 23 6 6 0 0 .333 .667 1
Rodriquez, Alberto 25 1 1 0 0 .000 .000 0

A couple of young and up in comers in Sanchez and Delgado with Nichols not far behind. Does that spell the end of Fernando Martinez's tenure in an Expos uniform. Matt Terry was a rental. So who will play 1B next year.

Montreal Outfielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Gonzalez, Ricardo 28 85 286 9 35 .269 .775 2
Woodbury, Joe 31 71 240 5 21 .188 .584 11
Irons, Jesse 26 79 229 9 36 .236 .746 11
Rodriquez, Raul 21 71 138 4 27 .326 .853 18
Dahms, Josh 33 36 120 2 7 .225 .601 0
Alonso, Jorge 24 8 9 0 2 .111 .422 0

The Expos need to get younger and will as Josh Dalms in free agent rental and the Expos may have to make a decision on Woodbury as his offense declined sharply.

The Expos are certainly struggling in all areas of the game but the biggest surprise would be the starting pitching ERA has jumped by about a run and a half. The Expos starters are basically the same guys as last year so I suspect it should improve.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Trevino, Javier 29 2-4 5.02 6 37 14 1.38 3.3
Taft, Jamari 28 2-2 4.22 5 32 30 1.53 8.4
Marks, Eric 27 1-3 4.45 5 28 21 1.76 6.7
Turner, Scott 30 2-2 4.32 4 25 15 1.56 5.4
Hernanez, Eddie 23 3-2 5.32 5 23 18 1.18 6.8

As mentioned earlier, the starters have not been as good so far this year. SP Eddie Hernanez had a 1.77 ERA last year, and is 5.32 so far this year. His Whip is actually not to bad compared to 0.89 last year. SP Eric Marks had a 3.71 ERA last year, but his Whip was 1.24 and his walks per 9 is almost doubled. SP Jamari Taft had a 3.20 ERA last year with a 1.25 Whip. SP Javier Trevino had a 2.33 ERA last year with a 1.02 Whip. His ERA is over doubled. As well his career K/9 is 5.6. SP Scott Turner had a 2.97 ERA last year with a 1.20 Whip. So all 5 starters should be better in the next 25 games.

Montreal Relievers AGE W-L ERA Save IP K WHIP K/9
Wiebe, Chris 32 0-0 7.20 0 15 8 1.87 4.8
Jones, Robbie 30 0-1 2.00 0 9 12 1.00 12.0
Beasley, Aidan 26 0-0 0.00 0 9 12 0.41 11.2
Holmgren, Mark 27 0-0 2.79 3 9 8 1.14 7.4
Deck, Jesse 31 0-0 4.82 0 9 10 1.61 9.6
Gonzalez, Eddie 25 1-0 3.38 1 8 11 1.63 12.4
Muckenfuss, Chris 26 0-0 0.00 0 8 6 1.13 6.8

RHP Aiden Beasley has been very effective so far, he has a career Whip of 1.15 and 10.9 K/9. LHP Jesse Deck is having a slow start, his career ERA is 3.61 and his whip has been 1.17. Rookie RHP Eddie Gonzalez has been OK in his 9 appearances, he has a pretty good ERA despite the Whip. Veteran LHP Robbie Jones is having a nice season so far. He had a career best 2.30 ERA in 1973 for Montreal. RHP Chris Muckenfuss has yet to give up an earned run this year and last, although last year he only pitched 0.2 innings. LHP Chris Wiebe has struggled so far this year and is way off his 3.65 career ERA and 1.20 Whip, he was injured in his last appearance so he will either go on the IR or get demoted. CL RHP Mark Holmgren had only had 3 save opportunities and has been used in mop up situations just to get some work.

Montreal Catchers AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Samms, Nate 34 20 73 0 7 .301 .677 0
Capellan, David 24 11 23 1 2 .217 .671 0

C Nate Samms is hitting for average, but has yet to hit a HR. The lowest HR total he has ever had was 9 in 1972 in 90 games. He also hit .219 that year. C Dave Capellan has only been called on for 25 plate appearances and 5 starts. He is hitting slightly better then last years .175 and .470 OPS.

Montreal Infielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Maher, Darren 22 25 98 4 12 .184 .621 0
Sanchez, David 25 23 78 1 6 .282 .704 8
Watkins, Gene 30 22 71 2 10 .225 .703 0
Nichols, Chris 24 15 47 0 4 .255 .626 2
Carlson, Cory 31 17 27 1 5 .296 .774 0
Forristall, Eric 27 11 22 0 1 .136 .390 1

The Expos may have to shake things up a little here. 1B Cory Carlson has only started 5 games and has 27 plate appearances. In his last year of his contract he would like to see that field a little more. 1B Rookie Darren Maher is struggling mightly, maybe some AAA at bats will regain his confidence as the Expos demote him to Seattle. 2B Chris Nichols has been OK, he got a few at bats last year as well and is hitting .264 in 21 career MLB games. 3B Gene Watkins bat has been a little quiet considering he has a career .275 batting average and a .715 OPS. SS Eric Forristall will get a chance to bump the slump in AAA. A career .232 hitter with .667 OPS is certainly struggling. SS David Sanchez is having a nice season at the plate. After hitting .241 his last year with a .622 OPS, he has improved. The Expos will promote 26 year old Alberto Rodriquez, he is hitting .300 with 1 HR and 8 RBIs in 12 AAA games. The Expos will promote 21 year old Ricardo Duran, he is hitting .313 with 0 HRs and 6 RBIs in 11 AAA games.

Montreal Outfielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Plantz, Danny 27 25 85 2 6 .165 .586 13
Woodbury, Joe 32 21 63 1 5 .254 .728 5
King, Bobby 24 23 62 1 13 .290 .705 3
Irons, Jesse 26 19 52 1 2 .173 .496 2
Rodriquez, Raul 22 19 38 1 2 .263 .702 5

The Expos need to get more offense out of this crew over the next 25 games. CF Danny Plantz has struggled at the plate, for his career he is only a .197 hitter but the expectations is that he will get better. He certainly burns up the base paths being on pace for 52 this year. LF Raul Rodriquez is not hitting the ball like last year, but he certainly is still on of the teams better hitters this year. LF Joe Woodbury, the veteran has never really hit for average (.235 career) but this year he is contributing offensively compared to his .188 average and .584 OPS from last year. Rookie CF Bobby King has started at 4 positions this year, 2B, 3B, LF and RF. He has also hit pretty well. RF Jesse Irons has been a disappointment this year, he was an MLB All Star last year but had a tough second half and and terrible 1st quarter to this season. He will work on his game in AAA as he is demoted. The Expos will promote 29 year old Ricardo Gonzalez, he is hitting .275 with 4 HRs and 13 RBIs in 20 AAA games.

For his career, Garcia played in 509 MLB games,had 505 hits, 31 HR's and 175 RBIs with a .256 career battingaverage. Montreal3 Atlanta 2 (12)
Thisgame had more ups and downs that Paris Hilton on a Saturday night. The Expos took a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the 9thonly to have CL Mark Holmgren give the tieing run and blowing his 1stsave. The Expos already used 3 previous relievers as both RHP ChrisMuckenfuss and CL Mark Holmgren now have to leave with injuries, bring on 29 year old Dave Marland who was just brought up fromSeattle. Marland (1-0) allows 0 runs on 0 hits with 4 strikeouts over3 innings to get his 1st career MLB win. Eric Marksallowed 1 run on 5 hits with 5 K's over 5.1 innings before runningout of gas. The Expos had 13 hits, 3 of them from 3B Cory Carlson. CNate Samms lugged his 34 year old 230 lb frame around to get his 1sttriple of the season, his first since 1971. TheExpos had just 5 hits and capitalized on a 2 run bottom of the 8thin getting the win. Expos SP Javier Trevino (3-4) was impressive in acomplete game 1 hitter with 9 strikeouts. The only blemish on the dayfor Trevino was the only hit, it was a solo HR.
