1920-21 Offseason News and Notes

The Phillies have drafted Lou Gehrig. What that immediately means is Phillies current 1B Vic Saier better start looking for another job!

It’s a pretty talented group this year. Washington looks like they got a crazy good steal in Pete Donohue 10th overall.

Honus Wagner is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Well deserved, as he’s the best SS we’ve seen so far. He anchored a Pittsburgh team, that won 2 world series titles in 03 and 04. They probably should have won more though, but let’s not blame Wagner.

After hitting .420, Hornsby deserves this.

Top Pitcher

After a 4.25 ERA, and 17 losses, Mr. Kantlehner does not deserve this.

1921 Regular Season

Rube Waddell has retired. Rube Waddell is perhaps, this leagues best pitcher so far.

He is the all-time strikeout king, with 3717 k’s. He won 384 games, 2nd overall, and is 4th with a lifetime ERA of 2.40. Shoe in for the Hall of Fame. Here’s a look at his long career.

On June 1st, Cardinals outfielder Tris Speaker is just 8/50 on the season. He is furious and demanding a trade. At 33, he’s still capable of hitting .300. If St. Louis does not trade him, they deserve to lose, as he’s got value.

On June 20th, Chief Bender won his 350th game. Chief has had a tough time with injuries the last few years, but he’s still rated well, and he’s having a good season. I’m rooting for him to win 400. It will be tough, but if his ratings hold,(he’s 37) he can get there.

Oscar Charleston hit 32 home runs last year, setting the single season home run record. The record lasted less then one full season. On August 31st, George Herman “Babe” Ruth hit his 33rd home run of the season. With more than a month left in the season, the Babe has taken over. He’s now 26, but he’s finally taken the home run reigns. Oscar Charleston is also in contention to top his old mark, with 24 so far.

Harry Heilmann hit’s .416 which virtually guarantees him of the MVP this year.

Babe Ruth ends up with 39 home runs. He and Lefty O’Doul prove to be a better duo then the Robins pair of Charleston and Hornsby. The Red's Bill Terry has the most hits since Nap Lajoie in 1901 with 239.

1921 World Series

It’s a 9 game series again to decide the champion.

Through 8 games, the series is tied at 4. So we’ll have the very first game 9! St. Louis had to come back from a 4-2 games deficit to force a deciding game 9. Babe Ruth's only home run of the series deciding game 7 for the Cardinals. If this was a 7 game series, the Tigers would have won in 6.

Game 9

The Cardinals will throw 28 year old Joe Engel, who won 24 games in 1919. He had a 3.61 ERA this season, but his probably the Cardinals best pitcher. The staff is very weak. Engel is 0-2 during the series.

Guy Morton is on the mound for Detroit. He’s declined after a combined 2.36 ERA during 1918-1919. He’s probably on his way out of Detroit soon, as 18-17, with a 3.65 ERA isn’t good enough for this AL dynasty. Morton though has only allowed the Cardinals 1 run in 19 World Series innings so far.

The Cardinals score 3 in the 1st inning, capped by a 2 run double by Tris Speaker(Lefty O’Doul is hurt). It took Detroit a few innings, but they struck in the 4th, when a St. Louis error helped them score two. A Guy Morton sacrifice fly tied the game up in the 5th.

It stayed that way until the 8th inning. Tris Speaker led off with a double, and he scored on a Frank Parkinson single. The Tigers got a pinch hit, 2 out double from Johnny Gooch in the ninth, but Joe Engel got the next batter out, and the St. Louis Cardinals win their first World Series!

Heilmann and Hornsby both won MVP’s in 1917, and 1920, so they are pretty much a pair!

1921-22 Offseason News and Notes

It’s a pretty deep draft this season. Al Simmons is a solid 1st overall pick. I love the Jud Wilson pick for Pittsburgh at 10.

Not alot of news this offseason. Pitcher's Doc White and Jimmy Dygert retired. Both were good players, who probably fall short of the hall of fame. Actually, Doc White will probably make it.

The Red Sox acquired Dick Redding in the offseason from Washington, which looks like a great deal, with Redding predicted to have a great great season.

There's some offense in the AL, but the NL laughs at the AL. It's a bit crazy the amount of hitting NL pitchers have to contend with.

Much better season for Kantlehner this year, and while he still isn't the leagues best pitcher, he's much more deserving then 1 year ago.

1922 Regular Season

The Chicago Cubs have broken whatever record could have existed.

Dutch Leonard injured himself during his first start of the season, which was a loss to the Reds on opening day. The Reds ended up sweeping the Cubs 4 straight. The Cubs got their first win of the year following that series against St. Louis, a 12-3 win. Following that win, Chicago lost the next 22 games! The 1-26 Chicago Cubs would finally taste victory again, beating the Giants 11-7, which also happened to be the day Dutch Leonard returned from the DL.

On May 4th, 35 year old injury plagued Ty Cobb got his 3000th hit. It’s a wonderful achievement for Cobb, who has a .331 lifetime average. Cobb has averaged 125 games a season over his 18 years. He’s got a lot of baseball left in him though.

Pop Lloyd has developed into one of the leagues top SS’s. He really improved over the years. I remember wondering if he’d last more than a year or two when I imported him into the league. Anyway, Pop’s an idiot apparently.

Finally…Tris Speaker has been traded. It took a while, but Speaker is a member of the Chicago White Sox.

The Cardinals get a talented reliever, but relievers aren’t to important these days. So this is kind of a salary dump, chemistry dump. Speaker helped the Cardinals win the World Series, he should still be starting. BTW, in his first month as a White Sox, he hit .354.

Major Leaguers have learned how to hit home runs, so the home run record will probably fall quite often over the next 15-20 years barring a monster season. On September 1st , Rogers Hornsby has 30. It will take a big month, but Babe Ruth’s record of 39 isn’t safe right now.

Pop Lloyd- I don’t believe this…..

Again?!

10 teams were still in the playoff race when we entered September, but the Braves and Browns really separated themselves from the pack, and neither race ended up to close. The Chicago Cubs, after starting 1-26, finish the season 63-64, which is an obvious improvement. The Phillies, who lead the Cubs by 14 games at 1 point, finish five games behind them!

23 year old Showboat Fisher, a former 2nd overall draft pick of the New York Giants hits .408. The Giant’s sent him to Philly for talented OF Ross Youngs, who hit .371 this year, so both team’s got something. I’d rather have a guy named Showboat though, who hits 400.

Hornsby is unable to break the HR record, falling 4 short.

1922 World Series Preview

This series features the sixth and seventh ranked hitters on the lifetime batting average list. Ty Cobb and Harry Heilmann. Cobb’s been healthy all year, and played great.

Horsnby wins his 5th MVP in the last 6 years! Didn't I say Jud Wilson was a great pick for the Pirates at 10...

1922-23 Offseason News and Notes

AAA teams are getting a little bloated, so, beginning in 1923, each team will have a AA team. The Pacific League and the Southern League are born. Minor league teams are randomly assigned a parent club.

With the addition of 5 negro league players to this years draft, it’s insanely deep. Mule Suttles is perhaps the best looking prospect I’ve seen in OOTP. He goes 1st overall to the Phillies.

The Phillies now have Mule Suttles, Lou Gehrig, Earl Combes(2nd pick in the 21 draft) and Showboat Fisher, who just hit over .400. All are under 24 years of age. They need some pitching though, or it won’t matter. Take a look at last seasons rotation.

A 3 man Hall of Fame class is highlighted by Noodles Hahn, who is easily one of the top 5 pitchers baseball has seen. Mike Donlin was famously(in my mind) traded right after winning the AL MVP for 40 year old NL MVP winner, Ed Delahanty. Christy Mathewson won alot of games playing for poor teams, and never made the playoffs. On a good team, he wins close to 400 games.

The AL would have to be considered the pitching league at this point, despite all the projected .300 hitters.

The NL would have to be considered the hitting league. Look at all that projected power!

Babe Ruth is finally recognized as the best player in the game. Oddly enough, I'd say Rogers Hornsby should be!

Top Pitcher

I'm just gonna assume Ed keeps being named best pitcher because there is a lack of pitching talent in baseball. It otherwise doesn't make sense.

Ok first off

Ballplayer Kempsen was too important to make the team WS photo? Prima Donna!

I hate those ballplayer first name PCL guys, I usually delete them

The Phillies squander a September double digit lead? Fiction emulates history, I hope the team fired Gene Mauch...errr,ummm the manager . Even in fiction the Phillies cannot catch a break with great talent.

As for Pop Lloyd, not only is he cocky enough to give the same excuse, but now he's smiling? What a jerk! But what is even more amazing than his 2 time bonehead gun cleaning move is that Jimmy Collins is STILL managing the Red Sox, wow! 22 years
