Moment of the Match

Not even Archie Moore's customary late card collapse could stop the Clays in this one as Manuel Ramos, arguably the most underrated fighter in the WTB spearheaded a decisive Louisville win. Ramos used his standard stalk and smother style, out punching David Haye to take a surprisingly easy 3-0 decision. Haye was unable to deal with the constant pressure and looked uncomfortable as every time he tried to find a fluid rythm, Ramos came at him throwing blows from all angles, keeping the cocky Brit on his heels.

The win really tightens up the standings at the top of the table as we approach the halfway point and it appears as though it will be another exciting race to the wire for the Wildhawke Memorial Trophy.

Moment of the Match

In a series of close, well fought bouts the MOM has to belong to Quinn Navarre this evening. Up 7-4, Hebron needed Navarre to take just one round against Chisora, who was a 5 to 1 favorite. Chisora taunted Navarre before the bell, calling him a Nancy Boy and several other words that can not be repeated. Navarre remained calm and as Chisora charged across the ring in his usual aggressive style, he was met with the same. After an even first round, that left Chisora cursing, Navarre only picked up the pace, fighting with a never before seen rage and beating the 'Del Boy' at his own game, landing wild punches and using back alley tactics inside.

The win is huge for Hebron as Ice Tea was on a 3 match roll and was gunning to move into a tie for first place, which the Haymakers are now assured of keeping through round 7.

Moment of the Match

A night of explosive KO's saw Greg Page seal the deal for Nebraska against the dangerous Mervine Thompson, landing a picture perfect right hand to the chin halfway through round 2. Thompson had Page hurt in the opening round and the home crowd was on the edge of their seats, but the young prodigy from Kentucky survived to down 'The Cleveland Thunderbolt'. Corrie Sanders continued his re-emergence as well, winning his 2nd straight by KO and 5th straight overall after dropping his first 2 fights of the season.

Moment of the Match

Lady Luck is no lady at all to the Punching Bags squad, who lose by a single point for the 3rd time in the last 4 rounds. Once again given a chance to win by rookie Primo Carnera, things still looked glum. The final bout of the match featured Al McCoy going against Washington ace Tommy Gibbons, who used his exquisite boxing skills to take the first two rounds. The struggling McCoy was not done on this night however. Throwing caution to the wind he tore into Gibbons with a hellbent fury that forced Tommy out of his game and into a slugfest, that brought the crowd to it's feet. Alas, the gallant effort fell just short as the final round was scored even, turning a tie into yet another heartbreaking loss for the Punching bags.

Moment of the Match

A strong argument could be made for Jack Sharkey securing the win with a 2-0 verdict in the final bout of a tied match. However, where it not for Archie Moore's upset of John L Sullivan, that moment would have never been possible. Looking much more comfortable in the #3 slot instead of anchor, Moore took advantage of Sullivan's plodding style with a crisp jab and nimble feet. With the bout close after 2, Moore asserted himself in the final round. Sitting down more on his right hand and snapping Sullivan's head back as he rushed in, Archie won the round comfortably to take the bout. The decision set the table for Sharkey and should once again endear Moore to the Louisville fans, as the Clays keep pace with Hebron, remaining 1 game behind the Haymakers.

Punching Bags just can't catch a break in another gutwrenching loss as they extend their league record losing streak to 7. David Izon defends the Chilton Cup for the 4th time, just one behind all-time leader Jersey Joe Walcott. He will face Lloyd Marshall next round in an attempt to tie the mark.

We also had our first random event, an eye injury to Roman Greenberg, but he will not miss any time. Rosters are updated in post 2 through round 7.

Sure glad I only paid a buck for Snipes. 0-6-1, I expected a little better from him. Well can't complain 5-2 at this point. last season I was 3-4. Great league fellas, enjoying the heck out of it, especially since I got computer problem solved.

Moment of the Match

just when it looked like the improbable might happen, the winds of fate changed. With his team traling 8-3 heading into the last bout Mervine Thompson needed a shutout stoppage to salvage a draw. for two rounds he battered Quinn Navare from corner to corner and looked poised to pull a loss out of the fire as he had Navarre groggy early in round 3. Then, like a caged animal instinct kicked in and a right hand that Navarre did not even see land, dropped Thompson flat on his back with a horrific thud. Thompson barely beat the count, but was in no condition ro mount any offense as the fight ended with boh fighters wrestling in ring center.

The defending WTB Champs are now 2-6 on the season and will need a miracle run to defend their title.

Moment of the Match

Greg Page got off to a rough start in his WTB career, but the rookie is now on fire as he won his third straight (2nd by KO) bout, starching the rapidly fading Dereck Chisora in the 1st round. The bout was sweet revenge for both Page (who lost a 3 rd decision to Chisora) and a Nebraska team that fell to Ice Tea 10-4 on opening day. Chisora was his usual vocal self before the bout and rushed at Page when the bell rang. Page stayed calm, jabbing and dancing, then dropping a perfectly timed right hand that shut Chisora's mouth as well as his eyes.

Moment of the Match

Tommy Gibbons set the pace and set the house afire with his first round blitz of Bob Dunlap. Racing from his corner, Gibbons eschewed his normal scientific style, instead unleashing a blistering attack that drove Dunlap back into his own corner. Sensing blood, Gibbons poured it on until referee Mills Lane had to choice but to jump between the fighters, saving Dunlap from further punishment.

Buckeye fans were left to hope that their big gun, John L Sullivan could match Gibbons. But Sullivan, still looking for his first KO of the season, needed a third round knockdown to avoid a loss. Lorenzo Zanon was soundly thrashing John L in the final stanza until a left hook from caught him flush with just 31 seconds to go, giving Sullivan the round and the fight.

Moment of the Match

Archie Moore has struggled in the anchor spot for Louisville this season and Seth Mitchell had one thing in mind for his teammate entering his bout with Primo Carnera. Take the pressure off "The Old Mongoose" in the match finale. Though he started slow, Mitchell picked things up in the 2nd round, beating the slower Carnera to the punch time consistently and ducking under the big mans looping shots. In the final round Mitchell puncuated his performance by dropping "Da Preem" to seal the win and give Moore a 7-4 lead going into his bout with Kennedy. Looking smooth and relaxed, Archie dropped Kennedy in the 1st and cruised to a comfortable decision win.

Louisville continues their turnaround form last season and remains just 1 game behind Hebron with 6 rounds to go in the 1901 campaign.

Moment of the Match

Tied 6-6 entering the final bout, two rookies were left to decide the outcome of this match, though only one was expected to have the final say. As so often happens in the WTB, talent and expectations took a back seat to raw determination. Karl Mildenberger, winner of just 1 bout all season long threw all care and worry to fate and fate smiled back upon him. Charging from his corner, Mildenberger unleashed a wild, windmilling attack that left him dangerously exposed, but simultaneously frustrated the heavily favored Langford. Expending every ounce of energy he had in the first 2 rounds, Mildenberger then wrestled Langford in the final round, hoping he had done enough and remain upright for 3 minutes.

Both hopes were granted as Mildeberger scored a win he may top in his career, fending off elimination for Buckeye and opening the door for Hebron to be caught at the top of the table.

Moment of the Match

Sully Montgomery was one of the worst fighters in the WTB last season, winning just 3 of 14 bouts and being among the worst in the league in seaosn points scored. This season he has turned into a difference maker for Nebraska, running his season record to 5-4-0 with a dominating performance over Billy Gilliam that stated Nebraska to an unexpected lead that they never relinquished, spoiling Washington's bid to move into a first place tie with Hebron.
