BASEBALL MONTHLY World Series Edition Louisville Champions of Baseball The Louisville Colonels won their first World Championship since they moved their franchise from St. Louis nine years ago. The Colonels capped an excellent season with a tremendous series win against a very good Boston Beaneater team. The series itself was a classic that went the full seven games and satisfied the appetite of all the national baseball fans. The American Association wins its second title in a row and continues to claim that even though their league may be a bit less popular and less rich, the trophy is on thier side. Celebrations of a championship streamed through the midwest and the state of Kentucky. Farmers came out on their tracktors to meet the players upon their winning parade. WP: B. Black LP: C. Weyhing Boston controls game 1 behind their ace Bob Black who struckout six men and did not allow an earned run thanks to some good defense. A four run sixth inning turned the game around as Cannonball Weyhing walked six men including a couple with the bases loaded; the young man showed his big stage nerves. Game 2 at South Ends Ground Boston
WP: Ed Dugan LP: Bill Sweeney The Colonels show their grit and come right back to tie the series behind the quality start of one od their leaders Ed Dugan. Dugan threw a gen on only 103 pitches as this game was never close. Six big errors cost the Beaneaters, Ed Delahanty commiting two big ones. Game 3 at Eclipse Park
WP: Bob Black LP: C. Weyhing After the day off for travel, Bob Black does it again with another win as over 9000 Louisville faithful go home after a big loss. Tommy Corcoran hits a three run home run for the big blow of the game and the favorites go ahead 2 games to one. Game 4 at Eclipse Park
WP: Ed Dugan LP: Billy Crowell The best game of the series here as the Colonels fight with everything they have behind Ed Dugan to tie the series. Down a run with two outs in the 9th but Jake Beckley got the tying single. In the 11th this time the Colonels were down a run but young Lew Camp ties the game with a single to tie the game. In the 12th with one out Germany Long grounded one between first and second for a hit that wins the game. Ed Dugan goes all 12 innings. Game 5 At Eclipse Park
WP: Ed Mars LP: C. Weyhing The Cannonball lost his third game of the series as the Beaneaters took control of the series with a emphatic win going home. Star Hugh Duffy drove in three runs and suprize starter Ed Mars pitched a solid game; most now thought this series was over. Game 6 At South End Grounds Boston
WP: Nat Hudson LP: Tom Healey With Bob Black on the mound and their home crowd behind them the Boston side looked to close out the series on a rainy day that caused a delay. A tie game into the bottom of the ninth when Ed Delahanty triped and was 90 feet away from a World Championship. Jocko Milligan grounded out to send the game to extras where in the 10th the Colonels scored three huge runs, two coming on a Dumy Hoy single. Nat Hudson showed unbelievable composure and closed the game out going the full 10. Game 7 At South End Ground Boston
WP: Ed Dugan LP: Bil Sweeney Eight errors in the most important game of the baseball seaon for the nervous Beaneaters cost them in the end. It was a one run game until the 8th inning when Ed Dugan himself drove in a run with a single. Then in the ninth the title was broken wide open. Otto Schomberg drove a two run home run out of the park and Elvis Curtis added another. It was only fitting that Ed Dugan was on the mound for the final out and ended it how else but with a strike out to bring home the title. BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1892 American Association Folds New Season Here The game of baseball will go on for the 1892 season although it will be a bit diffrent this time around. The long lasting war between the Amercian Baseball Association and the National League is over as the AA has seized control of its assets and teams this offseason.
The American Association had been struggling to compete with its more prominent and wealthier National rivals and the resources to keep going are out. Many owners were losing money and decided to give up the fight. The National League owners have offered to take over the majority of the teams that dont have ownership and will transfer them to the National side. Owners that wont sell there teams have also negotiated wit the NL owners to keep their teams and move them to the NL as well. The National League is now the undisputed champion of the 20 year war between the two leagues and now is the single authority of professional baseball in the coutry. Fans all over the nation spent a nervous offseason as a number of teams and cities didnt know if their beloved teams would take the field this spring. But the good news is that not a single team has been lost and the league will look much like it did in 1891. With stadiums and fanbases so big, there was too much money to be made for the NL or anyone else for that matter to see the Amercian Associations fold. Farther changes may be coming as the National League has long wanted to implement their own rule changes, including that of a shorter 132 game season. Still such changes will not take place for this season as the schedules and the like have already been finanlized. Now fans and players can concentrate on baseball in what many hope will be a more uniform and stable game that now resides under one authority. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1892 League Previews and Predictions National League Division 1 Boston Beaneaters Bob Black and Bill Sweeney still make among the best pitching duos in the league. Boston will look to finish what they couldnt last season in the World Series. Brooklyn Grooms Starter Jack Jones hopes he is healthy as Brooklyn looks to get back on top but is fighting age. Dan Brouthers and George Van Haltren lead the charge again. Chicago Colts The Colts have changed their look as King Kelly leaves town and Sam Thompson is the new star in town. Thompson is one of many new Chicago stars that include Germany Smith, Ed Sales, and Charley Bassett. Charlie Geggus is back for more dominance. Cincinnati Reds Cy Young is now the undisputed ace of this rotation as the Reds look to rebound under new management after their worst season ever. George Gore hopes to be healthy as the Reds have a long way to go. New York Giants Mike Tiernan signed a long term deal as the Giants hope to put it all together this season. The Giants however have a number of long term injuries going into the season. Philadelphia Phillies The Phils seem to have picked up some scrap from the rest of the league and have their baseball starved city worried again. The likes of Dave Orr and Billy Sunday try to find a permanant home and turn the Phllie fortunes around. Pittsburgh Pirates Eddie Burke the reigning MVP of the league leads the Pirates forward as this young team looks to finally win. The George's Cobb and Davies need to produce on the mound for that to happen. St. Louis Browns St. Louis watched their former team win the title and are jealous to get back. Jim Hadiboe remains the star of the team and the ace of the staff. Jim Fogarty is a very good player and could have a break out year. National League Division 2 Baltimore Orioles The Orioles make a splash and bring in Denny Lyons as a free agent. Lyons brings his flair for the game and the Orioles need it. The pitching staff is what concerns with the Birds and needs to improve. Boston Americans The Amercians spent money and changed managers to get better as they dont like being second fiddle in their own town, George Dandy Wood signs a huge contract to join the team as does Tom Kearns who is the ace on the mound. Chicago White Sox Sadie Mcmahon was the pitcher of the year and a revelation in Chicago. The Sox are dying to win and signed Irv Ray to a new contract. The Sox may be up and coming. Cleveland Spiders Charlie Ferguson and Adonis Terry will try to pitch the Spiders into contention. Roger Conner is still among the best players in the game and the Spiders have the talent to make a run. Detroit Tigers Detroit lost on some free agents they hoped for and will have an uphill battle to get to their 1890 form. Buck Ewing looks for support in the lineup that has had trouble generating runs. Louisville Colonels The champions come back for more and have essentially the same strong side. They ran away with the division last year but the challanges will be coming. Philadelphia Athletics The Athletics have been mired in a slump for years. They bring in 40 year old Ross Barnes some say for ticket sales more then wins. Kid Nichols and Kid Gleason need to start pitching their age. Washington Senators King Kelly among others join the Senators as anither team looks for its identity. The world is being expected by the young Willie Keeler. Experts prediction: Most experts expect the Brooklyn Grooms to again be the top team in the NL 1 along with the Beaneaters and the Colts . In division two the Cleveland Spiders and the Louisville Colonels are the favorites. The Orioles could be in the mix too. Final Prediction: Brooklyn over Cleveland 1892 Chicago Colts Roster:

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1892 A Familiar Face Comes Back  The Chicago Colts opened up their new season with a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Browns and hopes for a better year were wished upon everyone. On the bench for this game was a familar face sitting next to Charlie Comiskey the team manager. Al Spalding who pitched nine seasons in Chicago and won two championhips is back as the bench coach for the team. Rumors are also persisting that Spalding may have an investment pending on the team to become a percentage owner. "Its great to put on a uniform again" said Spalding who at the age of 41 looks as if he could still pitch, "Im here to cupport Commy and make this team the winning team it was when I last left." Spalding will be working with many of the pitchers of course especially young arm Nig Cuppy. Spalding will also be part of the brain trust and decision makers that Comiskey will lean on. Chicago veteran Cap Anson and Spalding are long time friends, and hit it off immediatelly upon his return to the club. "He has an easy job now" said Anson, "They pay Spalding to watch me play; who would have thunk that!" The changes on and off the field for the 92 season have many people talking but ultimately it is winning baseball that will be the only thing that matters in October. Beaneaters Send Strong Message The Chicago Colts opened their new season with a 12-10 month of April and some outstanding performances from Charlie Geggus (6-1, 1.80) and Sam Thompson (.354, 1 , 17). The defense has also been much improved commiting only 58 errors, good for 5th in the league. Still, any dreams of a total turnaround for the pennant were quickly extinguished as the Colts were embarrased by the Boston Beaneaters in a four game series this month in Chicago. The Beaneaters took all four games from the Colts including beating them when Geggus started twice. "I saw doubt in my teamates eyes when we played Boston" said Sam Thompson after the series, "we can never beat them if we played scared like we did." ---------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL WEEKLY May 1892 Colts Hot; Boston Hotter Baseball is back in force in two of the best sporta towns in the nation. With New York City still lagging in its baseball legacy it is Boston and Chicago that hold the success. The Beaneaters from Boston are determined to win what they lost last season in the World Series and are playing once again like the best team in baseball. For the Colts, they have built themselves up again and had a 17-11 May putting them in the mix again. Although better the Colts are sitting 5.5 games behind Boston and still seem a notch below them. Chicago has lost 6 of 7 games to their rivals this so far this year. "We are getting better" said manager Commy Comiskey, "we arnt there yet but we have the best group of players on the team since I started managing three years ago" Many think those comments are direct shots at former players like King Kelly. On May 24th Jocko Halligan tied a baseball record by having a whale of a game with 8 RBI in a 20-1 win over the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. Halligan also hit two home runs in the game, becoming the first player to do so since Ned Williamson did it eight years ago. Nig Vuppy also threw the first shutout of his career on May 26th against Pittsburgh.  Halligan among others are becoming stars in Chicago and with Charlie Geggus on the mound the Colts appear to be back. Althougn the improvement is great, the cream of the division remain the Boston Beaneaters.

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1892 Charlie Geggus Out For Season One thing the Chicago Colts could not afford in their efforts to catch the front running Boston Beaneaters was a loss of their ace pitcher. Charlie Geggus has had injury problems in the past but after a season last year without any problems, the worst happened to the star this month. Geggus was examined for discomfort in his shoulder after his start against the Phillies and after close evaluation, the pitcher will see no more action in 1892. The decision to shelf him for the year was a bit curious as no specific injury was dislosed by the team except that of "shoulder inflamation". Many are speculating that Geggus has something much more serious wrong with him but the team wont publish anything because of the amount of money invested in the player. Of course with Geggus out any chance the team may have had to compete for a pennant was over. The team struggled to replace him and did make a trade for hurler Cyclone Miller from the New York Giants. It was a shrewd move for the team but wouldnt be enough. Chicago went 5-13 after the Geggus injury, a record that was also helped by a two week absense of star hitter Sam Thompson who was injured in the same game against the Phillies.  Cap AnsonIn other news this month the Chicago legend Cap Anson reached a milestone worth printing about. Anson collected his 2500 hit of his career and remains the alltime leader in this catagory. Anson isnt near the player he used to be (.240, 36 RBI) but he is still beloved by the Chicago faithfull as one of the only remaining players in the league since its inagural season of 1871. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1892 Non Trade Sparks Colts Thompson Staying in Chicago  Sometimes it is the moves that you dont make that have the biggest impact. The Chicago Colts this month said no to a well publisized trade offer and envigorated the team to playing good baseball again. The Colts opened the month in the worse way as they took yet another humbeling performance against the Boston Beaneaters. The Colts were swept in a four game series in Chicago by Boston and in reality were not really in any of the games. The fans threw debris on the field and scorned the effort level of the team as Boston has taken a desicive 13 of 15 games in the matchup. The coaching staff and players took the critisism and when on July 11th the New York Giants offered some good young prospects for Chicago star Sam Thompson. Thompson has been one of the lone bright spots for the Colts and has also become a fan favorite this season. Charlie Comiskey and the Colts turned down the Giants offer and showed confidence in the men on their team. Immediately the team began playing better and went on a great run the rest of the month. Although out of contention for a pennant Chicago won 10 games in a row and went 14-2 after the trade was declined. "The team showed it believed in us and that meant alot" said Thompson when asked by the media about the recent activity. Even Cap Anson seemed to come to life turning his season around including a vintage 5 hit performance against Pittsburgh. Anson is batting .347 for the month. Chicago didnt stop ther but actually extended the contracts of two of their other key players. Jocko Halligan and Billy Earle both signed extensions with the team and will be in Chicago trying to help build a winner. The Colts do currently hold the 6th best record in all of baseball.  Billy EarleIn other news pitcher John Valentine who had done a fine job as a starter (5-6, 2.98) will miss the remainder of the season with a knee problem. Boston Running Away with It The Boston Beaneaters and their 77-26 record is one to really marvel at. The team from Boston is on pace to have the best record in baeball history and and could win the pennant by the largest margin in history. The three starting pitchers for the team have over 23 games won already and the dominance of Bob Black, Bill Sweeney, and Jim Conway is something the league hasnt seen before on one team. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1892 Jocko The New Star
Growing up in Avon Ohio the young Jocko Halligan had read stories of great ball players like Cap Anso. Halligan could only dream of playing ball at the highest level and even more so playing on the same team as Anson who also originates from Ohio. Halligan was drafted by the Colts in the first round of the 1889 amatuer draft. His transition to the big leagues wasnt the easiest as the young star adjusted to life in the big city and away from home. Halligan talked about the player that took him under his wing and showed him the ropes, "Billy Hamilton immediatelly helped me fit in with the team and took the time to show me the basics of playing at this level." said Halligan who couldnt break into the lineup in part due to Hamilton who was a star on the team. "I learned so much from Billy on and off the field and I owe him much of the credit for the player I have now become." After the Hamilton injury Jocko was given the chance to play and after a couple of years of fighting injuries and inconsistency, he has now come well into his own and is a star of this league at 23 years of age. Halligan is batting .318 this season with 9 hom runs and has driven in 96 runs which is good enough for the league lead. "There really is no telling how good he can be seeing how young he is" says Al Spalding, "Jocko if he stays healthy will be the next great star of the Chicago baseball." Whatever the case Jocko has come a long way from his days of dreaming on the farm in Avon. Still one dream remains, "I want to win that championship" Cleveland and Boston Ready For Final Fight With the Boston Beaneaters having wrapped up the pennant in one National Legue division the other is still well up for grabs. The Cleveland Spiders had a very good August and have a one game lead over their rivals from Boston where the Americans look to finish strong and play their cross town rivals for the title. The Spiders have never won the championship despite being in the league since its inagural season. To say that the fans in Cleveland are hungry would be a gross understatement. The teams will only face off twice in the month of September so the usual tension of waiting for telegraphs about the other team is going to be in full effect. The Spiders as usual are led by who is a 5 time MVP winner. Oyster Burns has also put together a good year for Cleveland. BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1892 BOSTON KING OF BASEBALL For the first time in the history of profesional baseball the World Series will be contested by teams from the same city. The City of Boston is a place where loyalties are currently split and the tension in the upcming days for the championship is said to have turned members of the same churches, schools, and even families apart. The Boston Americans made it to their 4th World Series and will be trying to win their second. The Americans did it at the expense of the heartbroken Cleveland Spiders, who they beat in a one game playoff. The Spiders and Americans were tied going into the last game of the season but to everyone's suprize both teams lost their last game. Cleveland who led the division most of the season lost to the Orioles 7-4 at home and the pain of a city that has never won was absolute. Thirty nine thousand fans showed up for the one game playoff in Boston, only the second in league history as both teams ended with identical 91-63 records. Mike Morrison out pitched 27 game winner Charlie Ferguson in a tight 2-1 contest where both teams had only 4 hits each. With the tying run on second in the bottom of the ninth, Jocko Fields flied out to right and Boston had their ticket to the pennant. As for the Boston Beaneaters no team had a regular season like they did. The Beaneaters shattered the best record and most wins of all time with 112. The are the first team to win over 100 games and were 70 games over .500 George Van Haltren (.358) won the batting title and was among the stars of this great team. The strongest aspect of the team however was their pitching with three diffrent pitchers having won over 30 games with Bob Black leading with way with 37 wins. One main concern going into the series is the health of Jim Conway who has a shoulder problem, if he will be able to make a start in the series is still in question With the first crosstown winners, the city of Boston has definately become the capital of baseball. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Colts look to 1893 The Chicago Colts finished the season with a winning record but the season was far from the lofty expectations the team has of itself. Biggest concern is how Chicago did against the class of the division Boston, Chicago beat the Beaneaters only three time in their 22 meetings. The hope for next year sits on the arm of Charlie Geggus who will look at recovering from a shoulder problem. Geggus is among the best arms in the game when healthy, and despite worries it is expected that the 30 year old will be back by opening day. Overall the team remains confident about its future and large changes are not expected in the offseason. The fanbase however remains on edge as it is now going on 10 seasons since the team last won the title.

BASEBALL MONTHLY October 1892 Worl Series Edition Historic Upset The city of Boston experianced a unique seven days as the World Series played itself out for the first time in the very same city. The Beaneaters who won 112 games during the regular season were suppose to be the team to take home the crown but such is never a guarantee in baseball.
After a series that went the distance and caught the imagination of everyone involved it was the Boston Americans who won their second world championship. It is the second year in a row that the Beaneaters came in as the heavy favorites in the Series yet came away with nothing. Some even went as far as questioning the integrity of the series as to try and explain how such a great team like the Beaneaters could lose the series. To their defense however one of their main arms Jim Conway was out for the series and Billy Nash missed the crucial seventh game. Still anyone who saw the games knows that the Americans deserved their win in a very closely played seven games. A recap: Game 1 At South End Grounds
WP: B. Black LP: F. Dwyer The Beaneaters take the opening game of the series behind Bob Black who would strike out ten and go the distance. A four run second inning did in the Americans when starter Frank Dwyer lost his control. Beaneaters lead series 1-0 Game 2 At South End Grounds
WP: B. Sweeney LP: C. Buffinton Trailing by one run the Amercians put three runs on the board thanks to some poor defense and a big two run double by George Wood. In the 9th with the winning run on the bases Charlie Buffington induced a groundball out by Bill Sweeney to end the game and tie the series. Series tied at 1 Game 3 At Huntington Avenue Ground
WP: F. Dwyer LP: B. Black At the perfect time Fred Dwyer had the biggest shutout of his career holding down the Beaneaters and beating Bob Black even though they had one hit on the day! Black walked six men and again made many question why he cant win the biggest of games. Americans lead series 2-1 Game 4 At Huntington Avenue Ground
WP: B. Sweeney LP: C. Buffinton Bill Sweeney answered right back for the Beaneaters and tied the series at 2. The visitors pounded out 11 hits and Billy Nash went 3-4 with two RBI. Sweeney struck out five and made it all look easy. Series tied at 2 Game 5 At Huntington Avenue Ground
WP: E. Hickman LP: D. Casey Leading by two runs in this crucial game the Beaneaters couldnt hold the lead. The Amercians tied the game on a Phil Tomney 2 run double in the 5th and then in the 6th George Pinkney singled in two. Ernie Hickman was good on the mound and the Americans took control of the series. Americans lead series 3-2 Game 6 At South End Grounds
WP: B. Black LP: F. Dwyer Fred Dwyer was no where near his Game 3 form and the Beaneaters returned home and drubbed the Amercians. Fifteen hits and a Jerry Denny three run home run were just part of a convincing win the guaranteed the series went the distance. Even so the Americans never gave up, scoring three runs in the 9th when all was lost. Billy Nash also injured himself in this game knocking him out of the crucial final game. WP: C. Buffinton LP: B. Sweeney With the game tied at one the Americans scored five straight runs off Bill Sweeney to take hold of the deciding game. Denny hit his second home run of the series but Walt Wilmot drove in three runs and the win was placed on the shoulders or Charlie Buffinton who got the job done. BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1893 SPALDING TAKES OVER FOR 93 SEASON In a move that suprised some but had others saying it was a foregone conclusion; the Chicago Colts announced that Charlie Comiskey would be relieved of his duty as team manager to make way for a familiar face. Al Spalding who has seen success in almost every aspect of his life steps in as the new Chicago manager whirling in a new wave of momentum and enthusiasm to the team. The Colts and the city of Chicago are itching to get back into the championship form that has been their expectation since their inception. Spalding is sure to bring a winning feeling and fire as no man won more games on the mound then he did. "Mr. Spalding is the man to take this team forward and make them the success that befits them" said the team owner this month before the team began preparations for the new season. Comiskey was a perfectly even record in his three years managing the team. he collected a 231-231 record. Best Outfield in the Game? Elmer Smith is the big new name in Chicago and the outfielder joins an already very good core of fielders making many take notice. Smith comes over from the White Sox and is a .295 career hitter including batting .330 last season. Smith joins Jocko Halligan and Sam Thompson in an outfield that Chicago hopes will produce a world of runs. Along with these stars Billy Shindle signs with the team as the new 3rd baseman. Shindle is a good team player and carries with him a good glove. "We love the changes we have made here and if we can stay healthy we feel we can compete with anyone" says new manager Spalding. Of course the biggest concern for the team is the arm of Charlie Geggus. Geggus is back in camp and is expected to be ready by opening day; Geggus however is rumored to still have some arm issues due to his delivery type. Team success depends greatly on the righty being at his best. -------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes Great Barnes Gives Up The Game 
One of the very best players to play has ended his career after 20 seasons. Ross Barnes finished on his own terms and left the game despite many teams still asking him to play. No player was as smooth or as consistent as Barnes who's popularity grew to enourmous proportions as the game became more wide spread. Barnes sitll holds the highest career batting average at .342, Barnes also batted .400 in 1875 and won 3 MVP awards.  Mike Tiernan

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1893 'THIS MAY BE THE END FOR HIM' The silence was deafening at the South End Grounds as Charlie Geggus fell to the ground after throwing an ill fated pitch. "You just heard it pop" said Billy Earle the Colts catcher, "Im afraid that this time it may be the end for him." Geggus had come a long way and worked hard to make a full recovery in the offseason to be ready for the season after he missed 5 months due to a shoulder injury. It was that same shoulder that let him down in only his third start of the season but this time it was much worse as he suffered a torn rotator cuff. Doctors say that Geggus will miss over a full year of action, and depending on how he heals may still not be able to pitch again. "He was the last person we could afford to lose. What hurts Charlie the most is that he wont be able to help his teamates again this year." said manager Al Spalding. "I can guarantee you that there is no quit in this team." Many are wondering why the Chicago team is snake bitten over the past three seasons; first Billy Hamilton was lost with a career ending injury and now Charlie Geggus faces yet another terrible injury. Action Taken For Pitching Help  Cannonball Morris With the season still so young the Chicago front office acted quickly to try and get some pitching to fill the void of Charlie Geggus. The Colts shipped their number one draft choice from last season Jack McCarthy to the Detroit Tigers from hard thrower Ed Cannonball Morris. Morris is expected to step right into the rotation and try to produce. Many are wondering if the Colts made this move out of desperation and acted to quickly. Management addressed thos concerns by pointing out that the Colts are last in the league in pitching (4.08) but could afford to lose some talent on offense since the hitters are doing well sitting second in the league in average (.288). Chicago after the opening month is 12-12 while the Beaneaters from Boston are back to their old tricks picking up where they left off last season with a 19-5 first place start. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another Legend Steps Away From The Game  Many of the early stars of the professional game continue to retire from their playing days, one of the most influencial was star pitcher Cy Bentley who threw his last pitch earlier this month in a reduced role with the Washington Senators. Bentley was truly the first pitcher of his time to dominate the game. Winner of the pitcher of the year award a record 8 times, Bentley won over 30 games three diffrent times and is second on the all time win list with 326 wins. Bentley also had 23 career whutouts and had five seasons in which his ERA was under 2. Bentley's best seasons came with the Boston Red Stockings and maybe his best year was in 1875 when the right hander allowed only 41 earned runs in over 300 innings pitched for a 1.10 ERA. "He was truly the first superstar this game has known" said Deacon White who was the Boston catcher for Cy Bentely early in his career. White also retired from the game earlier this spring. BASEBALL MONTHLY MAY 1893 BASEBALL ON DISPLAY IN CHICAGO The city of Chicago opened its doors to the world on May 1st as the Colombian Exposition World 's Fair came to the city. Chicago is a prominent host to the most prostegious event the world over and the fair opened with great anticipation and will continue through October. Chicago can be proud of itself as this grand event proves the city has fully recovered from the devastating fire of 1871. The fair brought great reconstruction and industry to the city as over 200 new buildings were built and numerous new roads and parks added. Chicago has been dubbed the modern Amercian city. The World's Fair which is expected to attract over 20 million visitors from around the world in its six months of course also conensides with the professional baseball season. Many are expected to pay a visit to the ball fields to see the Chicago Colts or the Chicago White Sox play this new American game called baseball. The game will be on display for the first time for many and hopes remain that the game will gain even more popularity with each passing day. The Colts will do everything they can to welcome new fans who have never seen the game before as booths and fliers with the basic rules will be distributed at the Sout End Grounds. It is one of Chicago's proudest moments and definately a historic time. The fair will have on display such innovations as electricity, an amusement ride by George Ferris, and a sultry new dance from the middle east called belly dancing. Among all the fuss, baseball is sure to thrive. The Colts continue to play decent if not championship caliber baseball with a record of 28-24 but still a full 10 games behind the league leading Boston Beaneaters. Colts statistics:

Your team is pretty good, but for now the Beaneaters are just too good. One has to wonder if you might just build for the future instead of trying to compete with a clearly dominant squad. What are you planning on doing? Your pitching has been pretty bad and is probably what's holding you back in the race. Nice to see Anson still going at a high level with his age.

The ramifications of that have been huge as I gave up alot for him and signed him to a long contract. I did trade my number one draft pick for Ed Morris he has been good but not great. Im not really sure what to do with my pitching to be honest, wait for Geggus to return next season or get the best free agent available next offseason. On a positive note my hitting is slowly becoming the best in the league. Sam Thompson is having a season of seasons and Elmer Smith along with Billy Earle are among the best at their positions. I also added another superstar in the amateur draft which I will be posting later. The news on Cap isnt so great. He was having a great bounce back season but broke a bone in his arm and will miss the rest of the 1893 season. I hope he can make it back. Thanks for following, I guess two championships in 22 years isnt great but it could be worse. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1893 Fred Clark Top Colts Pick  The 1893 amateur baseball draft always brings excitement to the 16 teams involved as the top talent from accross the land get their chance to make a name for themselves. The Colts had the 10th pick overall this season and chose what they deemed "the best player available by far" when they chose outfielder Fred Clark from Winterset Iowa. Clarke is a lef handed bat and upon his arrival to the team, was inserted into the Colts lineup as the center fielder immediately. Clark responded better then anyone thought playing in 13 games and batting .333. "I am excited to be playing in the big leagues" says Clark, "everyday is like a dream come true to play against the best." The critics however were many after the draft as the team still did not address their biggest concern which is team pitching. Chicago had their first losing month of the season in June and once again have fallen well out of the pennant race after half the season. The team has a 3.62 ERA but as everyone knows has their top two arms on the disabled list of the season. The bats are led by Sam Thompson who is having a career year. Thompson is batting over .400 and leads the league with 130 hits. Thompson is joined by Billy Earle (.363) and Elmer Smith (.324) in what has become an elite offense. Unfortunately for the Colts as mentioned the bad luck of injuries just wont go away. Cyclone Miller was lost for the season with a bad shoulder and good ole "Pops" was lost as well. Cap Anson who was having his best season in years broke a bone in his elbow and will be gone for the rest of the 1893 season. Cap was batting .317 at the time of his injury. BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1893 Trade Winds Accross Nation; Colts Make Big Deal Teams exchanging players is not the most common practice in the pro game but when the money is right and when the need is there, deals are made. Some teams move players more then others, the Chicago White Sox are notorious for this, while other teams do it only when absolutely nessessary. For whatever reason this past month the trade wins were blowing strongly and the Chicago Colts got into the act. The two Chicago teams were rumored to be meeting all accross towm this month and the rumors turned into reality on the 21st of the month. The deal has many of the Colt fans cheering while many of the White Sox fans are scratching their heads, discontent and money however always play a role in these deals. The White Sox get: WILBERT ROBINSON - Catcher Career numbers: .235 - 4 HR - 167 RBI - 280 H Robinson is talented but has had a very tough time breaking into the lineup as Billy Earle is the established star. Robinson is 30 years old and has made it publically known that he would like to get his shot as a starter. In Chicago he will be the starter and will have a chance to reach his potential. The Colts get:  JOHN MONTE WARD - 2nd base Career numbers: .291 - 416 RBI - 383 SB - 1099 H Ward comes to Chicago as an established star. Rumor has it that he wasnt getting along well with the front office with the White Sox and wanted a change. At 33 years old Ward should have some good seasons left in him and will help an already potent Chicago offense. In a blockbuster move that shocked the baseball world the two teams that are in first place in their leagues and on a collision course for the World Series made a trade. The Boston Beaneaters sent star Billy Nash (.331) to Louisville for Germany Long (.285) and veteran Stump Wiedman. Why the teams would make such a deal at this stage of the season has many wondering. In other moves Larry Twitchell (.324) heads to the White Sox while Brooklyn Grooms get Harry Stovey (.292). Cleveland sends Tommy Tucker (.354) to Boston for outfielder Jake Stenzel (.335). Finally Bill Blair (1.48 ERA) comes to the Washington from the White Sox for 26 year old Ed Hutchinson. Many around the league are saying that the movement in the trade market is in reaction to the dominance of teams like the Boston Beaneaters that are clearly above the cut of most league talent. There are also rumors that another professional league may be starting soon and teams want to make sure the players that they have are indeed happy. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Battle For .400 A number of players are having career seasons at the plate this year and a new standard may be set in the batting catagory. The elsusive make of .400 has never been reached in the history of the game since the schedule has advanced over 100 games but this season could be diffrent. Four players are within the .400 mark and embark on the final month of the season with a chance at history. Among the players is Sam Thompson of the Chicago Colts who leads the league with 177 hits and an average right at .400 at months end. The leader is Willie Keeler of the Senators who has the impressive mark of .415! Keeler however is out for about 10 days with a quad strain, something that may actually work in his favor. Hugh Duffy and Tuck Turner are also in the race. The overall race for the batting title is the biggest drama in the league as the regular season closes down. This is because both pennant races are just about finished with Boston and Louisville well on their way to a World Series showdown.
