It's good to see Buster win. He seems to do well, better than you'd imagine, from what I've heard from others who have him in their universes.

Canto Wins On Cuts

Miguel Canto (15-0-0-3) captured the vacant WBC Flyweight Championship last night as he stopped Koji Kobayashi (15-1-0-5) on cuts in the ninth round of a scheduled 12 rounder. Canto a 15-2 favorite was coming in off a ten round unanimous decision victory over Chang-Ho Choi back in April, while Kobayashi stopped Hi-Sup Choi in seven back in January. Canto started quickly as he was able to drop Kobayashi in the first round with a quick hook counter. Kobayashi would rise at six and remain on the defensive for the remainder of the round. Kobayashi bounced back nicely in the second as he out landed Canto 2-1. The third would bring Kobayashi his biggest deficit a Canto hook opened a nasty gash on the bridge of Kobayashi's nose. Canto would win the third and fourth round as Kobayashi seemed terribly distracted by the cut on his nose. In the fifth Kobayashi got inside and did some impressive body work. In the sixth Kobayashi's circumstances got worse as another Canto hook opened a cut above his right eye. After six I had Canto up 58-56 In the seventh Canto suffered a cut of his own as a Kobayashi head butt opened a cut above his right eye. Canto and Kobayashi would exchange feverishly in the seventh and eighth with neither man getting a clear cut advantage. As the ninth round started Canto fired a jab that began the blood flow going on the nose of Kobayashi and a few seconds later a hook opened the cut above the right eye. As the ref intervened and took Kobayashi to the ringside physician Kobayashi's face was a mask of blood. It didn't take long for the doc to call a halt to the bout. Kobayashi understandably was quite upset, Canto leaped in the air arms raised in victory.

The co-feature was a 12 round WBA Title eliminator. Dave McAuley (17-0-1-3) and Yukito Tamakuma (20-0-2-5) mixed it up for twelve action packed rounds that ended in a draw. McAuley a 3-1 favorite had won a ten round unanimous decision over Octavio Gomez back in February while Tamakuma won an eight round split decision over Franco Sperati also in February. Tamakuma jumped out early winning two of the first three rounds with one being even. Both men exchanged some incredible shots but Tamakuma was definitely getting the better of it. In the fourth McAuley finally started getting to Tamakuma with rights and lefts on the inside. Through five rounds both men had been warned numerous times for different infractions. I was sure someone would be disqualified. The next five rounds were evenly fought with both men landing hellacious shots if either man had power this would have been a barn burner. McAuley had to win the final two rounds on my card to pull out a draw and that he did. He convincinglky closed out the show as Tamakuma seemed to wear down as the fight progressed. I had the bout scored 115-115. The judges on the other hand. Had it 116-112 for McAuley, 116-112 for Tamakuma and 114-114. All in all a good fight, both men will do it again in August with the winner to face WBA Chamion Ignacio Espinal.

The under card featured Prudencio Cardona (10-2-0-1) and Jong-Kwan Chung (20-0-2-6). Cardona suffered his second straight defeat as a nasty cut above the right eye brought an early end to this one as it was stopped :24 seconds into the fourth round. Chung had won the previous three rounds before the stoppage. Soon-Chun Kwon (20-2-0-3) won a one sided unanimous decision over Beaver Kajimoto (14-3-1-1). Kwon scored knockdowns in the fifth and eighth round. Kajimoto was never in this one. Scores were 99-89 twice and 97-91. Eyup Can (2-0-1-0) fought to a four round draw versus TC Idris Ambidwile (0-0-2-0). Nathan Ballarda (2-1-0-0) won his second pro fight by unanimous decision over TC Shintaro Yamada (1-5-0-0).

The evening started when TBCB Community fan favorite Mel Turnbow (2-1-0-0) boxed beautifully enroute to a four round unanimous decision victory over Rochell Norris (0-5-0-0). Turnbow was incredible as a he pitched a shut out on two cards and the third was scored 39-37. Turnbow out landed Norris 126-61.

Great win for a boxer I predict an almost great future for! This has been fun to catch up on! And your guy is still alive, I think, in the Fabulous Fives Tourney!

That's what I like about doing tournaments for a particular weight class. You comb through the database and there are so many fighters you forget about. Like tonight, for example. Les Darcy and Georgie Abrams are fighting in my tournament. I may not use them in a universe setting for who know how long?

When you read about fighters from someone else's universe, it brings back some good memories from way back when. For some reason, I don't remember what I was doing when Stanley Ketchel held the title?

Galaxy Captures IBF Crown

Khaosai Galaxy(19-0-0-19) a 7-2 favorite over Mike Phelps (15-1-0-1) had a very little trouble stopping the American Challenger in eight rounds. Galaxy was coming into the bout with a fifth round knockout over Jackal Maruyama back in January, while Phelps earned a ten round unanimous decision over Payao Poontarat in February. Phelps was determined and made the first round close as he landed some sharp counters on the jaw of Galaxy who never flinched. Galaxy easily won rounds two and three as he was able to stalk the fleet footed Jensen. Galaxy landed some great body shots along the ropes. Phelps' demise started in the fourth as a huge hook opened a nasty cut above his left eye. That was followed by another wicked Galaxy hook that put Phelps on queer street. As Phelps got on his bicycle the left eye began showing some swelling. Galaxy pressed forward but was unable to capitalize on Phelps condition. Phelps fought gamely over the next two rounds even winning the sixth. Round seven saw Galaxy continue to punish Phelps who had no way of keeping Galaxy off of him. As the round came to a close Phelps' left eye was all but closed. In the eighth Galaxy came out and exploded a huge right hand off the jaw of Phelps who dropped to the canvas for a full ten count. Phelps tried gamely to rise but just could not do it.

The co-feature had Thanomsak Sithbaoboy (23-1-0-5) and Willie Jensen (22-1-1-2) meeting in a WBA Title eliminator. Sithbaoboy was coming in off a ten round split decision over Rafael Orono, while Jensen was looking to rebound from an eighth round knockout to Edgar Omar Moonserrat. Jensen started quickly in this one as he was able to plant Sithbaoboy on the seat of his pants for an eight count with a stunning cross 1:00 into the first. After the first round it was on, over the next eleven rounds both men took turns landing some incredible punches. Sithbaoboy had to contend with a cut over his right eye that would luckily just reopen once. After twelve rounds I had the bout scored 115-115. All three judges disagreed scoring in favor of Jensen by scores of 115-112 twice and 116-112.

The undercard featured a young Gilberto Roman (11-0-0-3) winning a tough majority decision over Jose Ruiz (15-3-2-3) by scores of 96-94 twice and 95-95. Also featured was Ellyas Pical (19-1-0-9) who won a very one sided ten round unanimous decision over Payao Poontarat (17-3-0-5). Scores were 99-91 twice and 98-92. Pical outlanded Poontarat 298 – 69. Wow.

Jr Bantamweight News

Next month Alberto Castro (25-0-2-16) and Jesus Rojas (14-0-3-4) will meet for a second time for the vacant WBC Championship. The undercard will feature an IBF Title eliminator as Edgar Omar Moonserrat (23-1-1-10) will meet Sugar Baby Rojas (17-0-2-8). And in August Armando Castro (25-0-2-20) will make his first defense of the WBA title taking on Willie Jensen (22-1-1-2)

Konadu Wins WBC Title !!!!

In the main event undefeated Nana Konadu (19-0-0-12) won a spirited twelve round decision over the very game Johnny Clark (20-1-1-15). Konadu entered the bout coming off an eighth round kayo of Alfonso Zamora back in April, while Clark was held to a ten round draw versus Eljiro Murata back in January. The opening frame was pretty evenly fought with a slight edge going to Clark. In the second Clark would visit the canvas for the first of five knockdowns. Clark would rise at nine just beating the count. The third thru the sixth rounds were again evenly fought with Clark looking to land the more meaningful punches, and both men splitting the rounds on the scorecards. The seventh is where Konadu started to take over the bout. A wicked right hand followed by a left hook would drop Clark for the second time in the fight this time for a six count as he rose there was considerable swelling under the left eye. Clark fought gamely over the final five rounds but would visit the canvas three more times in the tenth for counts of five, four and three. Clark seemed to be out on his feet but again fought bravely in the final two rounds still trying to end it. The scores were unanimous 116-109, 118-108 and 116-108. Konadu looked impressive but is in a division loaded with talent. I don’t see a long reign in the future of Konadu.

The Co-feature may have been the fight of the year. Franco Zurlo (22-0-0-4) won an impressive twelve round split decision of Khaokar Galaxy (20-1-0-18) in a WBA Title eliminator. Anyone who thought the heavy handed Galaxy would be out slugged by the light hitting Zurlo would have been laughed out of the arena but that is just what Zurlo did. Zurlo stood in the trenches and went to war with Galaxy. Thru the first five rounds I had Galaxy up by the score of 48-47. In the sixth a Zurlo hook opened a nasty cut under the left eye of Galaxy that amazingly would remain closed until the twelfth round. In the seventh Galaxy’s woes continued as his left eye began swelling noticeably. As the eighth round began Zurlo looked a little worse for wear when a Galaxy hook dropped Zurlo for an eight count. Zurlo was up and on his bicycle. After nine rounds I had the bout scored 85-85. Zurlo came out in the tenth looking to end the fight and a wicked right hand suddenly had Galaxy in trouble. Zurlo tried to close the show but could not do it. In the eleventh it was Galaxy’s turn to rock Zurlo badly. Zurlo had come out again trying to end the fight when he was caught by a heavy left hand. Amazingly Zurlo survived even battled back to win the round on my score card. At this point I had Zurlo up by two points 105-103. Zurlo could have coasted in the last round but again he came out looking to finish Galaxy off whose left eye at this point was almost completely closed. Again Zurlo took Galaxy to school when the bell ended both men exhausted fell into each others arms. I had Zurlo winning 115-112. The three judges scored 115-113 Galaxy , 114-113 Zurlo and 115-113 Zurlo. Zurlo had out landed .Galaxy 390-218 and landed at a whopping 48%.

The undercard featured Lupe Pintor (15-1-0-13) stopping Ernest Koffi (13-2-0-10) in two rounds to rebound from a split decision loss to Miguel Lora back in March. Next up rising Japanese contender Eljiro Murata (19-0-1-7) won a ten round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Julian Solis (18-1-0-1) by scores of 97-94, 98-94 and 96-95. Stix McCloud (7-2-1-1) won his second fight of the year winning a six round unanimous decision over TC Thair Osayande (0-4-0-0). And youngster Rollie Penyaroya was given a draw over four rounds versus Kawanari Sasaki by scores of 38-38 across the board. I had Penyaroya winning 39-38 on my scorecard.

Benavides Triumphant!!

Last night Jesse Benavides (19-0-1-14) and Soo-Hawn Hong (18-1-0-0) squared off for the vacant IBF Jr Featherweight Championship of the world. After fifteen freulling rounds Benavides walked away with a hard earned unanimous decision. Benavides was coming into the match off a ten round unanimous decision victory over Derrick Holmes. While Hong won a ten round split decision over Valerio Nati back in April. Hong started quickly taking the first round as he was able to keep Benavides at bay with a sharp jab. Benavides continued his pressure in the second round and edged a very close round. Benavides was warned for a head butt just before the bell. Benavides rocked Hong badly in the third with a wicked right hand. Hong was able to stay out of harms way for the remainder of the round. Over the next two rounds Hong was able to get himself back into the fight by using superior boxing skills. He pasted Benavides with great two punch combos. After five I had it 48-48. Benavides would win the next two rounds as he was able to trap Hong along the ropes and land some great punches. Hong looked worse for wear as the eighth round began. Benavides continued his forward pressure and again late in the round exploded a huge right hand off Hong’s jaw but this time Hong stood his ground and fired right back. Hong gained confidence in the eighth that carried over to the ninth as he pasted Benavides with rights and lefts and as the ninth round came to a close Benavides had noticeable swelling under the right eye. As the tenth frame started it was now Benavides who was looking tired. Exhausted or not Benavides and Hong waged war in the tenth. Hong not known as a big puncher stood and traded in the center of the ring with Benavides and landed some telling blows. Benavides undeterred fired right back and as the round came to a close the crowd was on it’s feet. This would be Hong’s last stand as the eleventh round started you could see Benavides was still stronger then Hong and Benavides shut out Hong over the last five rounds of the bout. I had the bout scored 146-140 for Benavides. The official scores were in line with what I scored two judges scored it exactly as I did 146-140 while the third scored it 147-139.

The next match a WBA title eliminator pitted HiroakiYokota (21-1-1-5) against Segio Palma (20-0-0-3). Yokota’s night got off to a bad start when the first blow landed by Palma opened a horrific gash over his nose. This seemed to take Yokota out of his rhythm as he never got on track and Palma easily out boxed Yokota over the first four rounds. Yokota’s troubles continued in the fifth as a Palma right hand reopened the cut over his nose. The ref halted the action to have the ringside physician take a look. The bout continued and again Palma just dominated Yokota. The sixth was looking much like the previous five rounds when again Palma landed a hook that covered Yokota’s face in blood. This time the ringside physician had seen enough and awarded Palma the TKO victory. Palma looked impressive and has now set himself up for a match versus WBA Champion Jaime Garza.

The undercard featured Snappy Asano (8-4-1-1) who won an eight round unanimous decision over TC Tabito Yamada (1-5-0-1). This is Asano’s second victory this year after starting the year off on a loss. The night began with Freddy Cruz (2-0-1-0) winning a four round unanimous decision over TC Antonio Cruz (0-6-1-0). Scores were 40-36 twice and 39-37.

Next Month Derrick Holmes (12-4-0-4) will face Mike Ayala (18-2-0-10) for the vacant NABF Jr Featherweight Title. On the undercard Loris Stecca (14-0-0-10) will face Wilfredo Gomez (15-0-0-14) in a WBC Title Eliminator with the winner to face Jeff Fenech.

Chacon Captures IBF Crown

Leading up to the bout many felt Bobby Chacon (20-0-0-18) had been partying hard instead of preparing for his title match with Jim McDonnell (15-1-0-5) but after 15 hard fought rounds Chacon dispelled any of those rumors. The first round was one of the best witnessed in this year. Both men came out flatfooted and exchanged furiously and Chacon tested McDonnell’s chin with the first punch of the bout he landed. Thru the bout McDonnell showed a tremendous chin and was never seriously hurt by Chacon. The same can not be said of Chacon. Late in the eleventh round a McDonnell hook dropped Chacon for a count of eight. After fifteen rounds both men had looked like they had been in a war. Chacon had a cut opened above his left eye in the eighth that would reopen twice but was never really a concern. McDonnell’s face began to show wear in the tenth as his right eye began to swell noticeably. As the bell sounded to end the match both men showed great sportsmanship as they embraced in the center of the ring. I scored 144-140 Chacon. The official judges scored similarly to me. 146-140, 145-139 and 145-140. Chacon out landed McDonnell 297-271. McDonnell proved tougher then I expected and showed the hard hitting Chacon he was there to fight. If the rumors of Chacon partying were true then I would hate to see this guy incredibly prepared.

The Co-feature was a twelve round majority draw between Davey Kotay (20-1-2-14) and Roberto Castanon (27-1-1-20). Castanon was taking a big step up in competition facing Kotay who was looking to rebound from a 10 round unanimous decision loss to Jim McDonnell. Castanon was coming in off an eight round unanimous decision over Alan Richardson back in January. Castanon had his hands full early as his left eye began swelling in the second round. Kotay easily won the first four rounds. Castanon started to get to Kotay in the fifth but still did not win the round. In the seventh a Castanon hook hurt Kotay badly who began to show swelling under the left eye. From this point on Castanon seemed to be the better prepared of the two and battered Kotay over the next five rounds but never had Kotay in the kind of trouble he had him in the seventh. I had the bout scored 115-115. Two judges agreed scoring 115-115 while the third judge had Castanon well ahead by the score of 117-113 which seemed way out of line.

The night actually started heating up when a pre-prime Barry McGuigan (16-1-1-15) and a prime Troy Dorsey (22-3-1-13) met in a ten round rematch of a bout that ended in a draw back in March. These two went to war from the opening bell with Dorsey getting the better of the inside exchanges. McGuigan did hurt Dorsey late in the second with a well timed right hand. Dorsey would rebound nicely as he would win the next four rounds, he just seemed to out work McGuigan on every exchange. Early in the sixth a Dorsey hook opened a nasty cut over the left eye of McGuigan. As the seventh round began it was Dorsey who now seemed a little slower. McGuigan quickly exploited this and swarmed Dorsey who couldn’t find an answer to stay away from the pressure of McGuigan. The eighth round saw Dorsey’s problems get worse as his left eye began to swell. As the ninth round began McGuigan’s corner implored him to get busy as Dorsey had built up an early lead. McGuigan headed their word and quickly went after Dorsey
And landed a crushing right hook that sent Dorsey to the canvas for a count of nine. As Dorsey rose you could see blood trickling down his face from a cut over the right eye. Dorsey was given a chance, and McGuigan pounced on Dorsey who was defenseless against the ropes as McGuigan landed some incredible shots. Referee Richard Steele jumped in at 1:57 of the ninth round to save Dorsey from further punishment. McGuigan’s knockout came at a great time as it was revealed he was behind on all three score cards at the time of the stoppage. These two definitely put on a great two matches.

The under card featured another prospect. Eusabio Pedroza (17-1-0-10) who easily won a onesided unanimous decision over Cesar Amazon (21-3-1-10). The only mystery in this bout was how Glenn Trowbridge scored this fight 76-76. I myself scored 80-71. the other two officials scored 79-73 and 79-75. Two other prospects Paul Hodkinson (3-0-0-2) and Yong-Kyun Park (2-0-1-0) won four round unanimous decisions over TC’s.
