SURPRISE, SURPRISE! THE NL RACE IS TIGHT AGAIN
Well, it just wouldn't be the National League if it wasn't a complete free-for-all atop the standings. This year the Beaneaters (despite the handicap of their nickname), the Superbas (living up to their nickname) and the Giants (likewise) are all in a knot at the top of the list. Right now the Bostonians hold a one-game edge on Brooklyn and New York with Cincinnati lurking six back at the edge of contention. The Beaneaters' rise to the top has been surprising, mainly because their pitching has been the worst in all of BaTTY (3.63 team ERA). The hitting is solid and they lead the league in stolen bases, which helps offset the pitching problems. Brooklyn is slightly above average in just about every category but is thriving because of a very solid 29-19 road record. If they could win at that rate at home, they'd be leading by several games. And New York, who have led the league most of the season, are right there as well, with a decent offense (3rd in batting) and mediocre pitching. Over in the American League, Detroit has climbed into the top spot, holding a two-game lead on erstwhile leader Washington, with the resurgent Boston Americans four off the pace. Detroit's Andy Hassler has notched 20 victories, the first to reach that mark this season, and both Kirby Puckett and Jimmy Cooney are having solid seasons for the Tigers.

End of Regular Season - 1905
WILD FINISH - AGAIN - IN THE SENIOR LOOP
It seems like every season comes down to the wire in the National League, and 1905 was no exception. The New York Giants and Boston Beaneaters battled to the final day - and beyond - to determine the 1905 pennant. When both teams finished with identical 91-63 records, a one-game playoff was needed to decide who would meet the AL champion Detroit Tigers in the World Series. "Wild Bill" Donovan toed the slab for Boston, squaring off with New York's Dutch Ruether before almost 30,000 fans at the Polo Grounds in Gotham. The Beaneaters jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings and entered the bottom of the eighth leading 4-1. But the Giants came on late, scoring one in the eighth and two in the ninth to force extra frames. The Giants parlayed that momentum into a pennant-winning run in the bottom of the 11th to head to the World Series in one of the best, though sloppily played (7 errors!) in BaTTY history. HO HUM: TIGERS CRUISE TO AL PENNANT After the dramatics in the NL, the AL chase seems almost boring. The Tigers finished six games ahead of Washington (both Boston and St. Louis were seven back) to claim the AL flag. Detroit's Andy Hassler won 31 games, and became the first league hurler to overshadow his celebrated rotation-mate, the great Matt Kilroy who won 'only' 27 this year for the Tigers. Batting champions were Cap Anson in the NL (who else?) who hit .418 and has a CAREER batting average of .411, and New York's Ty Cobb, who hit .363 for the last-place (again) Highlanders. Speaking of last-place, this season will feature the first BaTTY draft lottery. The decimal portion of today's Dow Jones NYSE closing number will determine who picks first in the 1906 BaTTY draft. The candidates and their lucky numbers: Chicago (N) - 00 to 49 Pittsburgh - 50 to 74 New York (A) - 75 to 89 Chicago (A) - 90 to 99 After today's closing bell we'll know who gets first crack at the fresh crop of incoming ballplayers...

FINNALY TIGERS ROAR !!!!!!
Its about time we get a pennent , Kilroy and Hassler have dominated the league with their 1-2 punch and its not supprising their sitting 1-2 in total wins and 1-3 in carrer era's. I was supprised Kilroy lost like 7 of his last 10 games or we would have had dual 30 game winners. Their 27-30 so they should be solid for another 2-3 seasons. Now we can see how many WS's this team can string together

Mr. Larry Dierker (who is responsible for losing the 1 game playoff) is now on the trading block. It's obvious he is not a Ross Gload-type clutch player.

let's see Detroit and New York in the World Series, such a tough choice...let me think who I should root for............
NEITHER.... I'd root for that "other" Boston team before either of them, not that I'll ever really need to since the odds of them ever being good is "nil" considering their management team.....

1905 World Series & GM Standings Update
GIANTS CAPTURE WORLD SERIES IN SEVEN
The tempering received by the New York Giants in their pennant battle with the Boston Beaneaters helped provide them with the steel to withstand the very tough pitching of the American League's Detroit Tigers in winning the 1905 BaTTY World Series. The Giants took game seven by a score of 3-0 as John Wetteland outdueled the legendary Matt Kilroy. It was the third matchup of the series for the aces of their respective teams, and the younger and less-heralded Wetteland captured the last two of the trio, games four and seven. For his efforts, which included a 1.69 earned run average, Wetteland was tabbed as the Series Most Valuable Player. GM STANDINGS THRU 1905: Code:

1906 Draft Results
KINER TAPPED FIRST OVERALL
Promising outfielder Ralph Kiner was the first selection in the 1906 Amateur draft and will be joining the National League's Chicago Cubs this season, though whether or not he's ready to become the regular patrolman of the left pasture remains to be seen. This time around, the BaTTY GMs elected to go with the wielders of the bat at the top of the draft, as the first chucker to get a call was Orval Overall who was grabbed by the St. Louis Cardinals with the fifth choice. This year's sleeper pick? It might just turn out to be right-hander Jim Palmer, who was chosen ninth overall by the Cincinnati Reds. Palmer is young and has a wealth of talent. Another good bet would be the man drafted just after "Cakes" Palmer - a good-old boy from the Carolinas named Jim "Catfish" Hunter, who will take a spot on the staff of one of the American League's best teams, the St. Louis Browns. The results of the 1906 BaTTY Amateur Draft are below: Round 1: Chicago (N) pick: LF Ralph Kiner Pittsburgh pick: RF Sherry Magee New York (A) pick: SS Leo Cardenas Chicago (A) pick: RF Doc Gessler St. Louis (N) pick: P Orval Overall Cleveland pick: 1B Dave Orr Philadelphia (A) pick: 3B Bobby Estalella Philadelphia (N) pick: 3B Jim Delahanty Cincinnati pick: P Jim Palmer St. Louis (A) pick: P Catfish Hunter Brooklyn pick: P Jeff Robinson Boston (A) pick: P Hal Carlson Washington pick: C Candy LaChance Detroit pick: P Dan Daub Boston (N) pick: P Darby O'Brien New York (N) pick: P Scott Service Round 2 : Chicago (N) pick: RF Jim King Pittsburgh pick: SS Floyd Baker New York (A) pick: P Bob Purkey Chicago (A) pick: 2B Jerry Browne St. Louis (N) pick: P Jim Abbott Cleveland pick: 2B Jake Atz Philadelphia (A) pick: P Duke Maas Philadelphia (N) pick: P Johnny Ruffin Cincinnati pick: P Bob Kelly St. Louis (A) pick: SS UL Washington Brooklyn pick: 3B Jim Morrison Boston (A) pick: P Joe Genewich Washington pick: 2B Rich Amaral Detroit pick: P Mark Williamson Boston (N) pick: P Vive Lindaman New York (N) pick: P Moe Drabowsky Round 3 : Chicago (N) pick: P Jose Paniagua Pittsburgh pick: RF Walt McCredie New York (A) pick: P Esteban Yan Chicago (A) pick: P Pete Falcone St. Louis (N) pick: P Jerry DiPoto Cleveland pick: 2B Johnny Burnett Philadelphia (A) pick: C Joe Nolan Philadelphia (N) pick: P Kid Madden Cincinnati pick: P Mike Ryba St. Louis (A) pick: 2B Dalton Jones Brooklyn pick: P Gerry Arrigo Boston (A) pick: LF Billy Zitzmann Washington pick: C Johnny Gooch Detroit pick: C Merv Shea Boston (N) pick: 3B Greg Norton New York (N) pick: CF Johnny Dickshot Round 4 : Chicago (N) pick: CF Cecil Espy Pittsburgh pick: C Javier Valentin New York (A) pick: RF Newt Randall Chicago (A) pick: RF Glen Gorbous St. Louis (N) pick: SS Bill Cissell Cleveland pick: LF Joe Keough Philadelphia (A) pick: CF Hal Jeffcoat Philadelphia (N) pick: LF Jud Daley Cincinnati pick: 2B Emil Verban St. Louis (A) pick: C Rube Walker Brooklyn pick: 3B Ray Bates Boston (A) pick: C Tom Needham Washington pick: 3B Roy Staiger Detroit pick: SS Tim Manning Boston (N) pick: 1B Harry Spies New York (N) pick: LF Matt Luke

June '06 Update
CHAMPS STUMBLE OUT OF THE GATES
Did their 1905 World Series win leave the New York Giants jaded? That is the question being asked as the defending champs have played mediocre ball thus far this spring and find themselves in fifth-place, a game under .500 and seven back of the front-running Cincinnati Reds. The problem? In a word, pitching. The Giants' staff has been the worst in all of BaTTY thus far, with a 4.49 staff ERA, also allowing the most runs, walks and home runs. The only bright spot has been staff ace and World Series MVP John Wetteland who is 6-4 with a 2.75 ERA. Meanwhile, the Giants opponents in the '05 Series, the Detroit Tigers, are off to a roaring start once again, with the best record in BaTTY (28-13), good for a four-game cushion on the second-place Boston Americans. Kirby Puckett is hitting .410 to lead the offense, while the pitching has a pair of nine-game winners in Randy Jones and Matt Kilroy (though Kilroy's ERA has ballooned to a frightening - for him - 3.81) and third starter Andy Hassler is 7-2 with a 2.06 ERA. There's a new face atop the National League's hitting leaderboards as Brooklyn's Nick Johnson is hitting .415 to lead the league and perennial champ Can Anson may be slowing down - his average is a "mere" .377 thus far.
