Steve;

Send me a copy of your Scottish last name file. I have one with approx 340 names, I can merge them for you.

One thing I was thinking about was that FM (and thus SI) must have a huge databank of 'names'? Has Marc Duffy said anything about getting access to these?

Is ICC2005 a SI product? Thanks for that lead. I am trying to get as many nationalities as possible represented, so I may try to track those down.

Just FYI, if I can't get a decent set of data for a given nationality (like, say, Pakistani), I'll probably exclude them, since no one wants a league with a hundred identical player names.
http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ci/co...yer/index.html

Every international cricketer (and cricket official) ever, from every cricket playing nation; 70+ years for India, 50+ years for Pakistan. Also South Africa (Boer names mainly), West Indies, etc. as well as smaller quantities for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and a few African nations, etc.

Will take a little work to pull the names together and obviously it includes every player, so lots of repeats of the more common names, but that can be used to give frequencies. Also, about 20% of the players appear to only have a first initial, but the surnames can be used.

I'll tinker with it over the next couple of days if there's an interest.

Scottish list sent, went from 100 to 430 names!

I also have an extensive Irish Last name set, which we can talk about on AIM.

I am still working on Africa.

Hey folks, anyone know a Korean native who could help out with some checking? I'm very confident in our Korean last names - they came from the Republic of Korea government.

I've cobbled together a long list of potential Korean given names. (In Korea, given names are practically unique, so we need a large pool of names for realism's sake!) However, I have very low confidence that these names are:

a. Actually legitimate possible Korean male given names
b. Are written consistently in terms of the romanization (we're using McCune-Reischauer for the last names)

Anyway, the list of Korean given names is here:

Korean First Names

Anyone who has knowledge of Korean, or knows someone who might help out, please let me know!

Yes Steve, I finally delivered African name set (Approx 1500 last names, and 830 first). I will try and get more before the final release.

Canadian first name set next!

Where did you find it?

Also... is it pan-Canada? Steve and I decided to split the Canadian set between French and English, given that they are quite distinctive, so if they are combined in yours, well, they lose some accuracy, and we'd end up with 44% of French names instead of 25% (well, roughly).

Korean Names

This is table of Hanja as published by the Korean Government. The idea is to take two characters and make one name from them. If you can translate it, run a program that makes all possible combinations, your golden.

Thanks, that's excellent. I can probably handle the possible combinations, but the translating bit...

English
Latin American / Spanish
Japanese
German
French
Italian
Finnish
Swedish
Russian
Czech
Polish
Scottish
Arabic
Irish

I'm also trying to figure out how to work these in:

Fantasy/Tolkein
Scandinavian/Viking

Waiting for Bobble's Hobbit files to show up in my in-box.

Some key nationalities I'm missing so far include:

Korean
Chinese/other Asian
Norwegian
Danish
Dutch
Portuguese
Brazilian
Greek
Anything in Africa

Please let me know if you have any leads on these.

Incidentally, my goal is to make distinct data by country, and not by language. In other words, I'd love to separate U.S. English, U.K. English, Australian, etc. Similarly, there should be different values for Latin American versus Spanish names, and so on. However, this may not end up being practical, for time or resource reasons. Still, I'll do my best! If it ends up being impossible, we'll just have one large data set for Spanish, English, Arabic, etc.

The data right now is not very clean, and I suspect a large number of duplicates. However, right now there are about 40,000 unique last names and 8,000 unique first names in the data set. This is about twice the number of names in the original OOTP.
This RULES!!! I guarantee you that Drizzt Do'Urden is a SS.

Just a quick update. Things are progressing on the names front. I have sent 2 versions of our name data to Markus, and his response has been very positive.

Currently, the top 4 sets we would like to work on are as follows:

UK (potentially used together with Australian, if they are close enough)
Czech/Slavic
Portuguese
Chinese/Taiwanese

If you would like to help with any of these, please let me know. RBLWebGuy is working on the UK/Australia thing, but we don't have many other volunteers.

Thanks everyone! I'll post in a bit with a list of what is included in the "completed" list so far.

upside:

He has ratings of infinity in contact, gap, power, eye, avoid K's He can play every position, perfectly, I might add, and hits from both sides of the plate. He clutch, a great leader, and extremely loyal.

downside:

He's also like 278 years old.

I have compiled what I would consider a fairly complete list of male first names for Canadians, based on geography:

WEST: Bob
EAST: Doug
