July 2301 - BNN Monthly Report - July 1

BNN Monthly Report

Last Month in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 July 2301

CBO Players of the Month

Nordhagen Beach's Sapienza Snags June Batting Title: Dirty Dog Sapienza may be much younger than other hitters in the North Charles Association, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in June to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 23-year-old Nordhagen Beach third baseman hit .390 with 6 home runs, 19 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

So far this year Sapienza is batting .295 with 12 home runs.

SCA's Top Hitter Announced: When Kory Richardson stepped up to the plate in June he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the South Charles Association Batter of the Month award.

The young University Point left fielder posted a .349 batting average with 7 home runs, 22 RBIs and scored 18 runs. Richardson also worked pitchers for 12 walks to post a .432 on-base percentage.

This year Richardson has hit at a .308 pace and produced 51 RBIs, 18 home runs and scored 52 runs.

Party Boys Nut June's Top Hurler: The top-rated pitcher this past month in the North Charles Association was Beachboy Nut of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys. He really dominated league hitters, finishing June with a 5-0 won-lost mark and a 2.13 ERA.

The Party Boys ace made 6 starts and surrendered 32 hits in 50.2 innings. He struck out 50 and walked 9.

Thus far this season, Nut has tossed 138 innings in 17 starts, fanned 131 batters, walked 27 and put up a 1.96 ERA with 11 wins and 1 loss.

South Charles Association Picks Best Starter in June: The Pitcher of the Month Award has been announced and the South Charles Association winner is University Point hurler, Bobby Van Marter. For his fine efforts in June he has been named the league's #1 pitcher.

During the month, Van Marter excelled with a 2.92 ERA and 6 wins and no losses. In 49.1 innings he struck out 29 and gave up 37 hits and 10 walks.

This year Van Marter has posted a 9-3 mark in 15 starts and has a 2.90 ERA.

County Crossing Starting Pitcher Rated Best Rookie: It was a trophy-winning month for Whip Lashley of the County Crossing Bloodbugs. He started 6 games and came away with 5 wins and the North Charles Association Rookie of the Month award.

For the month of June the 22-year-old Lashley recorded a 5-0 won-lost mark with a 2.60 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 52 innings.

This season Lashley has 9 wins and 5 losses and a 4.42 ERA.

Great Month Gets SCA Top Rookie Trophy: 24-year-old Wilson Beachball is deceptively poised for such a young man. In 5 starts he bagged 3 wins in June and took home the South Charles Association Rookie of the Month Award.

The University Point hurler logged a 3-1 record, 22 strikeouts in 34.2 innings, held opponents to a .190 average and compiled an ERA of 3.63.

On his stats sheet for the year Beachball shows a 11-3 record, 16 starts, 113.1 innings, 67 strikeouts and a 3.65 ERA.

BMU Players of the Month

June's Premier Batter Announced: Hunter Wilde made his presence known as one of the best young stars in the Commonwealth Association this past month.

The Malden Grognaks first baseman shined through the month of June and has won the Batter of the Month award.

The 22-year-old hit .326 with 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

In his season totals, Wilde has 25 home runs, .318 BA, .371 OBP, 63 RBIs and 35 runs scored. He has played in 41 games.

Cabot House's Rifleman Bags MA Top Batter for June: At only 23 years of age, Kern Rifleman could very well be having many more months like the last this in his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Cabot House Rayguns, as June was one to remember for the right fielder and he has captured the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .420 with 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

This season Rifleman is hitting .417 with 30 hits, 11 home runs, 29 RBIs, scored 23 runs and played in 18 games.

CA Selects Schmelzer June's Top Starter: Capping off a whirlwind month in which he went 3-0 with a 3.30 ERA, Smelly Schmelzer was selected as June's Commonwealth Association Pitcher of the Month today. Reporters caught up with the elated College Square starter as he left the clubhouse.

"I know it's difficult for pitchers -- when you have a bad start or two, people start wondering if you've lost it. Then you ride stretches like this one for all you can. You find it easier to come to the park every day because know you're contributing to the club, not just waiting for your turn in the rotation to make up for your last start."

Smelly Schmelzer definitely contributed to the club. He had 4 starts, throwing 30 innings, striking out 11, and holding the opposition to a .257 average.

In 10 starts this season Schmelzer has registered a 5-3 record and a 6.02 ERA.

Lidtke Premier Pitcher in June: Bobby Lidtke is the latest Massachusetts Association Pitcher of the Month award winner. The Boston Common starter shone on the hill repeatedly last month and finished June with a sparkling 2-0 record.

In 3 starts he tossed 21 innings, posted 17 strikeouts, and put up a 2.14 ERA.

Lidtke has fashioned a 5-3 mark for the season, 3.29 ERA and thrown 65.2 innings in 10 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .237 against him.

GBRL Players of the Month

Medford's Islands NL #1 Batter in June: Medford Medics fans believe they've got a talented young star in Dick Islands.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in June, as he hit .486 with 7 home runs, 17 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

The end result was the right fielder being named the North League Batter of the Month.

Thus far this season in 40 games Islands is batting .388 with 13 home runs, 28 RBIs and 33 runs scored. He has 45 hits in 116 at-bats.

West Roxbury's Talkington Bags SL Batting Award: Tommy Talkington put together a good June to earn the South League Batter of the Month prize. A virtual unknown, he made the most of his chance to prove to West Roxbury officials that he belongs on the big league roster.

The Mole Rats third baseman posted a .385 batting average with 9 home runs, 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

For the year Talkington is batting .305 with 17 home runs.

Arlington Starter Wins June's Pitcher Award: When Jumpy Haystack takes the hill, there's a good chance for a Arlington victory. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 3-0 mark and a 1.67 ERA in 3 starts, tossed 27 innings, fanned 18, and held enemy hitters to a .191 average.

That's why the Caps star was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the North League.

In 8 starts this season Haystack has gathered 4 wins while suffering 4 losses. He has pitched 62.1 innings, allowed 64 hits, struck out 42 and has a 4.04 ERA.

SL's Top Starter is Edwards: Big John Salvagers starter Chief Edwards has collected the South League Pitcher of the Month award for a run of lights-out performances.

"This town really appreciates it when you're going well," said Edwards. "They might boo you when you're getting knocked around, but they love you when you're mowin' them down."

In June the 21-year-old compiled a 3-0 record in 3 starts with a 0.90 ERA. He threw 20 innings, fanning 29 while walking 7.

In 6 starts this year Edwards has fashioned a 6-0 record and a 1.25 ERA.

2301 - Youth Leagues Playoff Results

BNN Youth Leagues Monthly Report

This Month in the BYDL, CCYL, and PJPL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

2 July 2301

BYDL

Sippers Win 2301 Boston Youth Series: Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better.

It was the latter case in 2301, as the Beerthirty Sippers topped the Diamond City Newsboys 17-7 tonight at Carnival Court to win the Boston Youth Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history.

"When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Beerthirty shortstop Cope Kearns, who was named series MVP.

The Sippers took the series 3-2. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the North Region Benjamin Franklin Division and a 46-20 record.

Beerthirty manager Curtain Riverstorm grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Kearns's words.

"Cope said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said.

Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come.

CCYL

Cape Cod Series Sweep for Chatham: The Chatham Lighthouse stunned the Provincetown Land Pirates by sweeping the Cape Cod Series 2-0. The Lighthouse dumped them 9-0 today at Ballpark at the Lighthouse in the deciding game of the series.

This was the 1st time Chatham has been the league champions. During the regular season the powerful Lighthouse chalked up a 24-16 mark and finished in first place in the Cape Cod League South Division.

PJPL

Title Captured - Providence League Won by Hope: The Hope Lurk Grinders have their share of problems, but getting to the postseason isn't one of them. The club today clinched the Providence League crown.

"It's not a perfect clubhouse, we have issues just like any other team, but in the end we did what we had to do on the field," said reliever Herwee Wargo. "In the end, it's a roster of guys coming together for the same cause."

Team manager Loose Kear brushed off any suggestions there are issues in the clubhouse. "Anything that goes on, it's just regular stuff that any team would deal with," he said. "In the end, we won the division and that's all that matters."

The club has a 26-15 record and the division title is their 1st.

Analysis

Nordhagen Beach and University Point remain at the top during this three-game week. Otherwise, Abernathy, Atom, and Salem made progress up the list for the Top 5.

Atom (#4) was the only team to sweep the weekend, knocking Quincy (#17) down in all three and establishing a three-game gap between themselves and Goodneighbor (#13).

With 40 more games to play, we are only a few weeks away from teams getting eliminated from the playoffs. The Party Boys (#1) also have a Magic Number of 23 for clinching a playoff spot with both Easy Town (#15) and Starlight (#11) sitting in the 6th spot.

One big piece of news was the trade of the amazing man that is Sheng Kawolski getting traded from Oberland (#18) to his hometown of Diamond City (#7) to play for the two-time champs. The Swatters are tied with Vault 81 (#6) for first place in the Railroad League, but it has been last in Starters ERA (5.23) in 2301. Kawolski gets to become the ace of the staff and get the best run support (385 runs) in the South Charles Association. That should help Kawolski improve on his current 7-5 record. He leads the SCA in strikeouts (104), K/BB (7.4), K/9 (9.2), BB/9 (1.2), and WHIP (0.90).

Harden of Far Harbor Named MDIF Best Skipper: A baseball manager's success usually depends on the talent of his club, but in the case of Jeremiah Harden, he seems to have taken the Far Harbor Dockdwellers to a higher level and gotten his just due. He was named this season's Manager of the Year in the Mount Desert Island Four for leading the team to a very rewarding season.

"Everyone on the team put in a lot of hard work this season," he told reporters. "It's always nice when it's acknowledged in some way."

Harden led Far Harbor to a first place finish in the Mount Desert Island Four. The Dockdwellers ended up with a 28-12 record.

GDIL Manager of the Year Award Goes to Grigsby: Matt Grigsby has molded the Echo Point Glowers into a top-flight Great Diamond Island League team. The 2301 Skipper of the Year came into spring training with a commitment to getting the most out of his Glowers.

"I told them I had no preconceived notions about them, that all of them were blank slates as far as I was concerned. I told them to learn my system and we would win. I told them all the spots on the roster were open, that the best players would play -- young or old, rookie or vet -- and that I expected them to hustle, to work hard, and play as a team. They bought into it and made me look good."

And Matt Grigsby certainly got the most out of his ballclub. The Glowers wrapped up the season in first place in the Great Diamond Island League with a 26-14 record.

MDIF Presents Outstanding Pitcher Award: Junkyard Padilla was really special this season. You could feel the electricity in the air every time he took the mound for the Far Harbor Dockdwellers. 20-inning game

Swatters Clip Gunners, 5-4
The Diamond City Swatters defeated the Quincy Gunners, 5-4, at The Stone House. Diamond City third baseman Allen Bishop had a superb performance. He went 4-6 with 4 singles and 2 walks. With the win, Diamond City raised its record to 40-29.

It could have been a different outcome for Diamond City, had it not been for Jason Watts, the 22-year old catcher . Watts contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the 20th inning to put Diamond City up, 5-4.

"I felt good up there," said Watts. "I saw the ball well."

Wow, 20 innings! TBH I love that OOTP keeps track of the *time* the game takes as well, in this case 7:20. Hard to imagine wastelanders having that long an attention span, heh, though I guess there's not really that many other forms of entertainment on offer.

Granted, a lot of the quarry workers did indeed have to leave early since they have to be up bright and early to cut stones. The Quarry Balcony Saloon has been really good at supplying a lot of Gwinnett at Quincy games, though. Old Butternut Fountaine was tickled blue that he was able to sling bottles until half-past 2 AM.

As a follow-up, Butternut Fountaine made a killing this midweek because the Wednesday game went 13 innings (5 hours, 18 minutes). That was 13 hours of baseball for Butternut's business. I think he loves 33 innings of midweek baseball!

For Bucky Bachelor and Catfish Banner, I would imagine they wanted their guys to get more midweek rest. They're both traveling on Thursday. Diamond City is heading to Egret, while the Gunners are going to Warwick. At least Quincy doesn't have to travel as far. They lost five straight now, so they need a big weekend against the dead-last Mirelurks.

Funnily enough, I was going to make a joke about how I bet the vendors ran out of food, too, because I highly doubt there's a bountiful trove in stock at each ballpark in this universe (hell, reading the 1 star review series on reddit, sounds like ballparks run out of hot ticket items enough as is IRL). But hey, if you're going for a brighter wasteland, I'm all in on keeping the Gwinnet flowing

I cannot predict what will happen in the future, but the Boston wastes are thriving more than ever. Due to several factors, food and drink supplies are way up. Thanks to an excess of water purifiers, fresh, clean water is available, and the breweries have been able to get steady supplies of goods to keep making brews. They taste different from the pre-War brews, but they are indeed plentiful and overstocked thanks to the number of previously abandoned factories that are now producing many goods. In Bradberton, the Nuka brand is blowing up. On Desert Island, the Vim! brand is in steady production. These wastelanders are not going thirsty! Most kids still hate brahmin milk, though. They prefer their Sugar Bombs with one of the Nuka flavors.

July 2301 - BNN Weekly Report - July 15

Uh oh, Salem! I need to figure out what to do for suspensions, but I rolled a negative supermax for them. See Transactions below. I am going to balance it by giving two of the five players permanent buffs.

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

15 July 2301

Players of the Week

North Charles Association Announces #1 Player: Dan Erb is respected by most Concord Radstags fans for his no-frills style of play. The 24-year-old left fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .526 average (10-for-19) with 2 home runs, 7 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

Presently Erb is batting .339 with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs. He has played in 73 games and scored 55 times.

Bather of Vault 81 Player of the Week: It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Knud Bather, the Vault 81 Dwellers 23-year-old shortstop, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 7 hits in 17 at-bats, compiling a .412 average with 2 home runs and 11 RBIs.

Looking at his present stats, Bather has compiled a .259 batting average in 73 games with a .344 on-base percentage, while hitting 14 home runs and driving in 50 runs.

Analysis

The North Charles Association was mostly wishy-washy in its week, though there were a few results that stood out in the Institute League. The most notable is that Abernathy (#8) lost 4 of 5 games, squeaking out one victory over Fort Hagen (#10) on Sunday. Still, the Silver Shroud are making a move, currently only three games back of the Adamantium.

Concord (#9) and Starlight (#11) also made moves this week, including sweeping their weekend series against Lexington (#23) and Sunshine Tidings (#21), respectively. Both went 3-2 after being swept in their midweek games.

Nordhagen Beach (#1) still controls the Brotherhood League and the CBO, for that matter. The Party Boys lead Salem (#5) by 12 games with 35 to play. Their Magic Number to clinching a playoff spot is just 19 games, while their league Magic Number sits at 24.

In the South Charles Association, there are three red hot teams and three blue cold teams. Vault 81 (#2) took a three-game lead over Diamond City (#12) with a six-game win streak, including sweeps of Jamaica Plain (#17) and Oberland (#19).

Egret (#6) and FHE (#7) also both swept through their Railroad League games. The Ninjas are now on a seven-game winning streak, including a dismantling of the Swatters.

University Point (#3) had a ho-hum 2-3 week, splitting with the T-51s and losing 2 of 3 at Goodneighbor (#13). The Deathclaws maintain a five-game lead in the Minutemen League over Atom (#4), which went 3-2 on the week. The Claws also hold a three-game lead over the Dwellers for the SCA's top record.

2301 - Season Pass Report - July 15

News

Monday, July 15, 2301
In a joint effort, both the Nuka World League and Vim! League are looking to change rules to help balance out the offense and pitching in their minor league systems.

Currently both the NWL B and the VimAAA leagues have much lower batting averages than their big league counterparts. The NWL B is even more pronounced with no players batting over .300 and the league leader, Keychain Colvin of Quantum B, batting just .279. The league batting average is .189 in the NWL B and .207 in the Vim AAA.

"Pitching looks great," Eden Meadows AAA manager Training Heck said. "Unfortunately, we score about two runs a game. It's tough to win when the games are quite often shutouts." The Anglers average (2.8 runs per game).

Thursday, July 11, 2301

In earlier news on the week, both the NWL B and Vim AAA leagues plan to break away from their parent leagues. Both John-Caleb Bradberton and Small Bertha cited marketing needs.

"It's great to see so many Nuka jerseys walking around the parks," Bradberton said, "but the truth is that we could sell even more merchandise if the minor teams had a different name."

Bertha said that she thought all teams in the Vim AAA may change their names in 2302. Bradberton was not sure. There were, however, some name changes that seem to be decided, while others will come closer to January 1. Neither league owner mentioned what the new league names may be called.

Among the expected name changes, these are some of the current proposals:

Teams in the NWL B League may adapt names of their local parks and attractions. That would mean in alphabetical order of current drink names, the following would change:

Cherry B -> Grandchester Mystery Mansion
Dark B -> Dry Rock Gulch
Grape B -> Kiddie Kingdom
Orange B -> Nuka-Town USA
Quantum B -> World of Refreshment or Nuka Bottling Plant
Quartz B -> Galactic Zone
Victory B -> Bradberton
Wild B -> Safari Adventure

There could be other possibilities, like naming teams after some of the most popular rides around Nuka-World or even taking the names from the Amusement Park Youth League and then forcing those teams to either take on the NWL B (or Y) names.

The Vim! League has been more definitive in its changes, including putting together make-shift parks in other parts of Mount Desert Island and its surrounding islands. The locations of those parks are as follows: Cliff's Edge Hotel, Eagle's Cove, Fringe Cove, Glowing Grove, Haddock Cove, Huntress Island, the Longfellow Estates, the Oceanarium, Southwest Harbor, and The Nucleus.

A few of the team name changes thrown around are Champions, Convicts, Fatboys, Hunters, Pickpockets, and Radchickens

Quantum Nukalurks: Placed LF Poop Strohbehn on the 7-day injured list, retroactive to 07/14/2301.

NWL Names Nukalurks McMath Winner: 23-year-old T.J. McMath sent shock waves through Nuka World League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Nuka World League Player of the Week Award. A newcomer to the league, McMath made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .526 average, 10 hits in 19 at-bats, 2 home runs and 4 runs batted in. Where the Quantum Nukalurks third baseman goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but McMath certainly made his mark last week. This season in 63 games, McMath has hit at a .326 clip with 76 hits, 7 home runs, 36 RBIs and 39 runs scored.

Division Remains Up for Grabs, but Orange in Postseason: It remains to be seen how the 2301 Orange Tourists will be remembered, but one thing is now assured - the team will have a chance to win their 1st Nuka Series.

On the strength of their 48-30 record, the Tourists today officially punched their ticket for the postseason, although it remains to be seen whether that will be as a division winner.

With one week remaining, four teams are vying for their chance to faceoff against the Tourists. Dark, which has a one-game lead over Grape, Victory, and Wild, is expected to earn that spot. The Bloodworms host both teams already eliminated, Quartz and Cherry, at home in the final six. Both the Gatorclaws and Cave Crickets must travel to Orange but could benefit from the Tourists resting players in anticipation of the Nuka Series.

Friday, July 12th , 2301
Dark Bloodworms: Signed free agent RP Sean Grabill to a minor league contract with a $324 signing bonus.
Dark Bloodworms: Signed free agent RP Mike Michaud to a minor league contract with a $72 signing bonus.

Cherry Ghoulrillas: Released RP Querrier Borgatti.

NWLB News

NWL B League Names Top Player: This Week's premier pitcher is Gene Olson of Dark B -- he is also the best player in the league. He shackled NWL B League hitters all last week and claimed the Player of the Week honor.

He put up a 1-0 mark with 5 strikeouts, 2 walks in 9 innings, and a 0.00 ERA.

This year Olson has compiled a 6-5 record with a 2.46 ERA.

VIML AAA News

Gulpers Sweep Vim! Minor Series: With a 3-2 win over the Rayburn Point AAA Patcheyes tonight at Rayburn Point Park, the National Park AAA Gulpers wrapped up their 1st title in team history.

National Park AAA left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word of the day as the Gulpers celebrated the culmination of their banner year in the victors clubhouse following the game.

"Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said National Park AAA manager Oscar Spaceballs. "Our players felt that way all year and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void."

A jovial mood filled the air as National Park AAA celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" in the works.

"We're going to celebrate our team, our championship National Park AAA Gulpers," the mayor said.

The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the Harbor League AAA and a 43-22 record.

See, now this is the good drama, though ironically given the personalities involved, the renaming/breakaway seems to be relatively drama-free!

To confess, I initiated the minor leagues of both independent leagues because I did not want to put in the time to redo the leagues. However, I regretted those decisions after. Once I started making more youth league logos and jerseys, I thought I made terrible decisions. The entire APYL should have been the minors of the NWL, for example. It probably will be. It's never too late to reverse history!

It’s definitely tough to decide what to do when you have absolute control

All work and little play are making me miss the little details!

I didn't notice McBourbon got hurt. Hell, I didn't notice he got the call up to The Slog, either. Looking at him made me realize that I have some strangeness happening since moving to OOTP 22. Lots of SP are getting relief appearances, so I went into the settings and turned off allowing SP to appear in relief. People like Sheng Kawolski should not lose a start because he pitched 0.1 innings in relief in a blowout.

Here are Bry McBourbon's stats:

There's definitely some pitching engine differences, but since I converted on launch day I don't quite recall what the old version was like and I'm "used" to the new version so to speak. I will say 22 seems to enjoy having a 6 pitcher SP rotation early season and then after about a month drops it back to 5, if you leave the AI to their own devices. I know this is kind of how the modern game is trending, but 21 didn't have the rotiation auto-set like that for me. Dunno how that would work out with your different season length. It does kinda shuffle who's SP and RP though, but honestly I haven't payed much attention because for the majority of the time in 22 I was playing as the Orioles and we were just going to suck no matter what happened so I just kinda let it happen
