WEB PAGES UPDATED...
April 1946 The Tigers jumped out to a lead over the AL early in the month, but a late swoon dropped them to just above .500. The Senators, who were a 1/2-game behind the Tigers two weeks ago, are still a 1/2-game out of first. Now, though, the AL leader is Philadelphia, who ended April on a 10-hame winning streak that saw them sweep the Yankees, Browns and White Sox. The Reds lead the NL, and they hope they can keep their lead unlike last season when they slipped in August and September. The Braves and Cubs are early season surprises as the only other NL teams with winning records. Brooklyn is sluggish in last place, but they are just 4 games out - proof that parity is alive and well in the NL. Reds pitcher Roy Mills threw a no-hitter against the Giants. It was the first no-hitter in Reds history since Lynden Allen in 1924, almost 22 years ago to the day. Add in Cecil Tan's no-hitter in 1909, and it is just the 3rd such performance in Cincinnati history. Speaking of top performances, Brooklyn great Oscar Vancini moved into 1st place all time with 1860 RBI, passing Sam Kass's 1847. With 3 homeruns this month, he is just 2 shy of 550. In The News Apr 18: Robert Murphy, Boston labor relations counsel, announced the formation of the American Baseball Guild. This is the beginning of an attempt by players to form a union. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Alex Footwangler (DET)! He had a record of 5-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.60. American League-Batter of the Month: Danny Lazo (CHA)! He batted .400 in 90 AB, with 6 homers and 27 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Jack "The Carpenter" Schoonover (NYG)! He had a record of 5-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 3.00. National League-Batter of the Month: Maurice Misisca (PHI)! He batted .396 in 91 AB, with 6 homers and 22 RBI. Code:

My Red Sox need to eat their Wheaties. 10-17? The early predictions of a threepeat don't look so good right now, but with 127 games left, we just need to hit a hot streak. Our bats have been fine, but pitching has been a HUGE hole

Well, Ervin Skjerly has lost his starting job. Looks like he won't reach his 3000 hits.

Good start for the Braves. It obviously won't keep up, as the regulars are so old (Vega, Allen, Mclellan, etc). Giving the kids another year to develop should help out tremendously.

It makes things a bit more interesting when we have real, live GM's that we can "yell" at when our ancestors are being "mistreated".

Yep, should be fun if everyone behaves.
Complaints about the Giants players can be made at my PM here or on the TWB site. Also, anyone writing a story on the Giants who needs a quote from one of the players can PM me. If there are writers who management or the players get along with, there may be some "unnamed sources" willing to provide info. (It may take awhile to get this rolling, but it could be fun) |

Yes, make sure you get permission from one of the owners before "quoting" a player. It's only fair.

On another note, I can't believe I'm rooting for the Cubs in an alternate universe. Let's hope Walter Davis gets traded to the Pirates soon - only to finish his career with the Colt .45s. Ahhh, that would be sweet...

Sweet, not even a week old and already I've got three guys in the majors
and not ridign the pine either but actual startign positions (Eric Slater as closer for the Sens, and Ted McMurray as 1b for the Cards). Although I'm wondering as to the reason for the pormotions as when i checked before, they were almost all in the minors. Did we have a rash of injuries?

Well, as far as Slater is concerned, he was in the minors only because he was just drafted. So as soon as the regular season started, he hit the big league roster...due to the fact that when he was drafted this year, he was already a "big-league ready" pitcher.

May 15th, 1946
The injury bug hit the NL. Cincinnati pitcher Ace Shipley (4-2, 4.60) is out until late June with a strained bicep. Pittsburgh lost the NL's leading hitter Rudy Young (.449, 10 RBI) until mid-June with broken ribs and pitcher Bill Tschetter (4-4, 2.62) until late June with a torn bicep. Then the Phillies lost ace Tom "The Octopus" Mierhofer (6-1, 3.82) for the season with a torn elbow ligament. In 3rd place, the loss of the Octopus makes a NL title defense increasingly difficult for the Phillies.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn climbed out of the cellar and the Cardinals tied the Reds for 1st place, but last place Pittsburgh is just 5.5 games out as the NL continues to be tight from top to bottom. Brooklyn's Jonny Perly, who already holds the major league record of 89 stolen bases in a season (1941) is lighting up the basepaths. He has 28 steals on the young season, nearly triple the next highest total (11). He has been successful 93% of the time and is currently on pace for an astounding 111 steals. Perhaps he is running so much because the Dodgers offense cannot score runs otherwise. Meanwhile, Dodgers ace Frank Smith, fresh off a year tour in the Pacific, is just 4-3 with a 4.02 ERA. Ever since his first two seasons in the majors, he has only once posted an ERA above 2.95. After throwing a complete game shutout of the Reds on April 27th, he has combined to allow 16 runs and 32 hits in 24 innings over his last 3 starts. Amazingly, he was 2-1 in those starts, which is even more shocking with the way the Dodgers have hit over the past few years. The A's had a terrible start to May (2-11) and fell to 6th place. Washington remains steadily atop the league, but the surprising Browns are riding a 6-game winning streak and have tied the Senators for 1st. The 3-time defending AL champion Red Sox are out of sorts with the worst record in the majors. They are already 8 games back and look more and more like they will not be able to prove to critics that they can win a pennant without war-depleted rosters. Code:

Seriously, though.... I'm aghast at the poor performance of my pitching. I guess the loss of Mark Ponfick hit us harder than we expected. Still, there are 114 games left....you never know when a hot streak could happen. |
