Explaining Topps Proofs

The starting point is that these were never intended to be made available to the public. By definition a "proof" was not sold in packs or in other traditional ways. They were internal products - produced and usually maintained as uncut sheets of 33 or 66 cards - serving to make sure colors and logos and photos and everything else were right.

There would be no records made of any kind. Topps has no archivist or historian and is often stumped by stuff that turns up in old boxes.

That sad, for years some proofs - usually cut by hand from sheets and almost always showing a variation from the card actually published - drifted into the hobby via Topps employees. Most notably all the 1967 Maris cards listing him with the Yankees were sold to a dealer named Bruce Yeko. In 1989 Topps held an auction in New York in which it sold basically everything it had in its sprawling plant in Brooklyn. Literally hundreds of sheets of "proofs" were sold, and most cut into individual cards. About ten years later as eBay was taking off "The Topps Vault" was created and what they didn't sell in 1989 they have been selling there.

Each card sheet would be printed in each possible color combination - just black and white, or yellow and blue, or full color. I think the number varied per year but tops out at about 12 different. In some years there would be additional variables - cards printed on paper instead of cardboard, or on glossy stock ("slick"), or in smaller sizes, or just the photographs with no card design overlay, etc.

For our purposes the unused and used player negatives are from a vast photo archive - I was given the opportunity to inspect it and do research using it - of literally at least a million images. Even posting 20 new baseball images a day and generously assuming they've already sold 100,000 negatives there is no chance they could run out of new ones to sell before the year 2143.

And that doesn't account for the fact that there are also hundreds of thousands of football and basketball negatives left as well.

And they photographed everybody they could find. There are trainers, spring training instructors, coaches, even a few announcers - and especially any player in uniform. So Topps - and the Chicago based photographers George Burke and George Brace - are the primary sources for every obscure player before 1990 or so...like Glenn Redmon here, who was with the Giants for exactly seven games in 1974:

dunno what to tell you... it scans as clean with Kaspersky.

the site linked to by okcochise is/was legit as well, but Chrome is giving me a malware warning for the downloadable file.

note that the file I linked to is a few years old and is what I used to install the software on my machine... it also bears a different file name from the one presently offered on Adsen's site.

----

I've deleted the file from my OneDrive.

1978 Phillies

Looking for a few really tough Phillies from 1978 - prefer color, no autographs or watermarks, but at this point I'll take what I can get -
Kerry Dineen
Dan Boitano
Dan Larson
Horacio Pina

Actually, I'll be stunned if anyone has a Dineen or Pina, in particular. Grateful, but stunned.

Thanks!

Ed Clark 1886

The Ed_Clark image in the Facepack and shown on Clark's B-R.com page actually pictures Dad Clarke. Here is the real Ed Clark, from an 1895 Dallas Steers team photo.

Here are a couple of Larson options.

Thanks so much for the Replogle ID. You are right when you say the Topps images "tend" to be posted in rough alpha order. But the HV folder is really "out of order" on that matter. Here are 2 players I would like to ID, most probably career minor leaguers, or if they played in the majors, most certainly with other teams than those they were pictured with. My guess for the Royal player is Ted Parks, drafted by Orioles 1966, 1st round, KCR minors 1969-71...but more of a wild guess... Thanks in advance!!

These Guys Stumped Me Too

No idea on the Royal, but if somebody wants to go hunting on the Dodger, this much we know from Topps' L-A shoots of the era:

Images 1965 and earlier would have that browning effect - something happened to virtually all of Topps' pre-1966 images to create that.

1966 - the Dodgers photographed in Vero Beach were all wearing the "Los Angeles" script road uniforms.

1967 - Topps got the Dodgers in their glowing white home uniforms at Vero.

1968 - Topps took no major league photos that year.

1969 - The shoot at Vero again showed the Dodgers in road "Los Angeles" garb.

1970 - The shoot at Vero had the Dodgers in home uniforms.

1971 - Road "Los Angeles."

1972 - The one-year road style with blue piping on the shoulders.

So this image was taken in 1966, 1969, or 1971. His hairstyle/facial hair (or lack of either, more precisely) suggests '66 the likeliest option. There weren't THAT many LHP in the Dodgers' farm system who merited a non-roster invitation (as the extremely high uniform number suggests). Happy hunting!

1978 Clarence Gaston

Looking for an image of Cito Gaston taken with the Pirates in 1978 during his 2-game stint in Pittsburgh. The only image I've ever seen is the 1979 Topps paint job, and that doesn't even count.

Cash needs some work

Can any of you do anything to clean up this Dave Cash image for me? I can't get the light blue right without sacrificing the skin tones.

Possible ID on Dodger #72?

One of the handful of lefties in the Dodger organization in 1966 - dreadful in the minors in '65 but enough of a prospect that he had been shown in the yearbook the year before.

Chin, eyes (as best as you can tell with a black and white image), one -maybe both - ears, nostrils look like a match - Bill Boehlert.

Thoughts?

Hum....not convinced. The overall facial aspect of Lefty looks more "baby face" than Boehlert, I think. Thanks for your great yearly pic unis tips and searches. I'm still on it.

Various cards & photos that never were

I came across a site that I thought you all might like. It is called Bobw's Custom Baseball Cards: Bobw's Custom Baseball Cards

In one of his latest offerings he features players who were never pictured in a certain uniform. He uses photoshop to create the missing photo. He shows the original photo, the doctored one, and the associated card that he produced. One of his photos is of Don Larsen with the 1967 Cubs which is one that I know we have been looking for. Look over his samples and see what you think.

Don Larsen - Cubs 1967 / Ken Hunt - Braves 1966 / Ed Sadowski - Braves 1966 / Dick Drago - Tigers 1968 / Leo Marentette - Expos 1969

Royals Mystery Photo - Bill Haynes

This is in reponse to yesterday's inquiry by keonleafs. The mystery player is William Daniel "Bill" Haynes, a third baseman, who was on the Kansas City Royals' spring rosters in 1969 and 1972. He was a White Sox draft pick in 1967. The photo on the right was on eBay in 2013.
