So Close And Yet So Far
The guy in the background of this B&W shot up on eBay at the moment of Garry Templeton at Dodger Stadium in 1977 -- wearing #40 -- is the elusive Tom Underwood in a St. Louis uni.
Obviously, he's got his back to the photographer and the photog was shooting black and white. |

That just goes to show that every fan's experience with players and former players is different. (Perhaps you caught him on a good day - maybe he had just won millions from the Maryland or Delaware Lottery.) However, in my experience, Lou Grasmick was extremely uncooperative. After many previous attempts it finally took the efforts of a friend and fellow collector who lived near Grasmick near Baltimore to track him down and obtain a signed photo of him. Equally difficult was a teammate of Grasmick on the 1948 Phillies,. pitcher Dick Koecher, who at 88 years, 6 months of age recently was recently added to Wikipedia's 100 oldest currently living MLB players list. In my experience both of these men, who had only a cup of coffee or two in the majors yet act like they are big shots and big stars, had no tact when it came to handling fans. Fans were merely an annoyance to them and they didn't attempt to hide their annoyance!. Last edited by KenRaffensberger16; 10-03-2014 at 06:48 AM. |

Ubaldo Heredia - Montreal Expos
Ubaldo Heredia pitched in 2 games for the Expos in 1987 (10 innings). That was his only taste of MLB.
I have 2 pictures of him. A b/w and a small color picture that was posted on this site. If you have other options of Ubaldo with the Expos, please post them. Thanks! |

Texas Rangers Shoulder Patch
I'm working on assembling images of all MLB players from 1978, and have run into a conundrum with regard to the Rangers' uniforms. In 1977, they wore a black arm-band with the number "4" for deceased teammate Danny Thompson. Around the same time, they wore a shoulder patch such as the one worn by Campy in this image I found at Baseball Birthdays. I have seen versions of this patch without the 1776-1976 notation. Now, Campy didn't come to the Rangers until 1977 - did they wear the patch with the years beyond 1976? If so, if they wore it into 1977, then Campy should also have the black arm band, no? He doesn't, so this had to have been photographed after 1977, but then why still the dates on the patch? Help!

Easily explained. Well into the 1980's it was common practice for teams to repurpose the previous season's uniforms for spring training use, and then for later use by minor leaguers. A new set of uniforms would not be made until the end of spring training.
