Mets Hold Off Royals; New York Just One Win Away from World Series Championship
Kansas City--Birds of a feather don't always stick together.
Former Baltimore Oriole teammates Rawly Eastwick and Rick Burleson faced off against one another to decide game four of the Joy in Mudville World Series. With two on and two out, Eastwick got Burleson to ground out thus preserving a 5-3 New York Met victory at Royals Stadium Sunday afternoon. Eastwick's second save of the Series upped New York's advantage to three games to one. The Mets hope to close out the Series Monday in the final game in Kansas City. Eastwick was the seventh pitcher used by the Mets to hang onto Sunday's victory. The 25-year-old right-hander has appeared in all four Series game thus far. Righty Bob Sykes, who pitched 4.1 innings in relief of starter Ken Frailing, picked up the win. The Mets built a 4-1 lead by the fourth inning and held off the Royals down the game's stretch. Steve Braun, Wayne Garrett and Tim Foli each had three hits for New York. Braun hit a two-run homer off Kansas City starter Steve Busby. Jay Johnstone (4-for-4) and Frank White (3-for-4) combined for seven of Kansas City's 11 hits. Game five starters are Larry Dierker for the Royals and Don Hood for New York. Mets Finish Off Royals to Grab JIM World Series Flag
Kansas City--The New York Mets finished off the shortest Joy in Mudville World Series in league history.
New York ended things at Royals Stadium rather than allowing the Series return to Shea Stadium for a sixth game. The National League champion Mets grabbed their first JIM championship by defeating Kansas City 6-4 Monday night to take the five-game Series. After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, New York battled back with a pair of runs in the second and third innings. Center fielder Mike Jorgensen ignited the Met rally with a second-inning two-run double off Royals' starter Larry Dierker. The Mets went ahead for good in the third when Ed Kranepool homered with Boog Powell aboard to give New York a 4-3 lead. The teams traded runs in the sixth inning, but Powell provided an insurance run with a ninth-inning solo homer. Powell's round-tripper gave him four home runs for the Series. That establishes a new Fall Classic record. New York starter Don Hood settled down after giving up those three runs in the first inning to pitch well enough to earn the victory. Relievers Enrique Romo and Rich Folkers then shut out the Royals over the game's final three innings. Steve Braun, Jerry Grote and Kranepool each had two hits for the Mets. Dick Allen hit a two-run homer off Hood in the first for the Royals. As stated earlier, this five-game Series was the shortest in JIM history. The 1970 and '74 Series each went six games. Every other Fall Classic has gone the full seven games. Record-Setting Powell Earns JIM World Series MVP Honors
Despite sitting out the first game of the Joy in Mudville World Series with a back ailment, New York Mets' first baseman Boog Powell took home the Fall Classic Most Valuable Player Award.
Powell hit .428 in the four Series games he played. In addition, four of Powell's six hits were home runs. His home run total broke the old JIM World Series record of three round-trippers set by Cincinnati's Tony Perez in 1971. The 35-year-old Powell scored six times and drove home seven runs. Those marks fell just short of Perez's totals of seven runs and nine RBIs. However, Perez played in seven games in the '71 World Series. This marks the second time Powell has played for a World Series-winning club. In 1970, Powell played first base for Baltimore. Niekro, Hartzell Top Picks in Expansion Draft
Pitchers Joe Niekro and Paul Hartzell were the first-round picks in the 1977 Joy in Mudville League expansion draft Monday evening.
A coin flip gave the Seattle Mariners the first selection in this landmark event. GM Tom D. wasted no time in choosing Niekro, younger brother of Atlanta pitcher Phil Niekro, off the Detroit Tigers' roster. The Toronto Blue Jays followed by taking Hartzell, a 22-year-old right-hander from the California Angels. One of the most interesting selections came in the sixth round when Toronto grabbed 19-game winner Marty Pattin from the American League champion Kansas City Royals. The 33-year-old Pattin was left unprotected and will now don the fifth different uniform of his career. The Los Angeles Dodgers were the first team to have the maximum three players taken from its franchise. The round-by-round selection appears below: Round 1 Round 1, Pick 1 - Seattle Mariners: MR J. Two former Los Angeles Dodger teammates and the first American League batting champion headline this year's list of players hanging up their spikes in the Joy in Mudville League.
Ex-Dodger mates Jim Brewer and Claude Osteen join Minnesota outfielder/designated hitter Tony Oliva is announcing their retirements this off-season. The 39-year-old Brewer enjoyed his finest season in 1974 when he saved a franchise-record 39 games. Brewer ranks eighth all-time with 110 career saves. The 37-year-old Osteen posted a 118-84 lifetime record in seven seasons. Osteen three times won 20 or more games with Los Angeles before ending his career with the Indians. Osteen was 17-12 for Cleveland last season. The 36-year-old Oliva won the 1970 AL batting title with a then-record .370 average. Oliva, a native of Cuba, was a lifetime .294 hitter.
