Sunday, June 8, 1901 NATIONAL LEAGUE Pittsburgh pounded the Cincinnati Redlegs twice to move a game ahead of the New York Giants in the NL pennant chase...the Giants divided a pair with the lowly Dodgers. PITTSBURGH PIRATES 10 - CINCINNATI REDS 4 (first game)...at Forbes Field in the first game of a twinbill the Pirates smacked out fifteen hits to overwhelm the Cincinnati Reds...a seven-run eighth easily wiped out a 4-3 deficit and gave them a come-from-behind victory...all of the regulars had at least one hit...Arky Vaughan (.318) homered and had two other hits...Lloyd Waner (.333) , brother Paul Waner (.294), Pie Traynor (.371) and Roberto Clemente (.303) each marked up a pair of base knocks...Bucky Walters (3-7 4.66) took a one-run advantage into the eighth frame, but he and Clay Carroll were shelled by the Bucs batters...Deacon Phillippe (6-4 2.48) chunked seven for Pittsburgh with Babe Adams (5-6 3.74) doing the honors for the last two...Adams notched the win. PITTSBURGH PIRATES 7 - CINCINNATI REDS 2 (second game)...Jose Rijo (0-2 4.74) of the Reds walked ten batters in just four innings as the Pirates literally walked away with their third staight win, a doubleheader sweep and back into undisputed possession of the top spot in the National League...Ray Kremer (7-1 2.08) went all nine innings to easily get the win...the wornout Cincy staff had no one to go to and had to stay with Rijo...Pie Traynor (.363) slapped in two runs, Lloyd Waner (.370) punched out two basehits and George "Boots" Grantham (.310) smoked his fourth homer...the Reds lost their third consecutive contest. NEW YORK GIANTS 4 - BROOKLYN DODGERS 1 (first game)...at the Polo Grounds, the Giants' Gaylord Perry (4-4 2.52) was on top of his game in the opener against the next-to-last Dodgers...he restricted them to just five hits, fanning nine and issuing only one walk...Barry Bonds (.275) was a perfect 3-3 and an rbi for New York...Don Drysdale (1-7 4.25) only surrendered two earned runs and did well in defeat...Brooklyn's Gil Hodges (.271) tripled twice...a MLB record...but was left standing at third both times. BROOKLYN DODGERS 7 - NEW YORK GIANTS 4 (second game: ten innings)...in game two, it was a test of ace relievers and Brooklyn's Ron Perranoski (6-2 1.82) conquered New York's Robb Nen (4-3 3.06)...Perranoski held the Giants scoreless in the ninth and tenth frames to best Nen, who was pulverized for three runs and four hits in his only inning...the Dodgers tied it up 4-4 in the ninth and then won it in the tenth...offensively Zach Wheat (.319) and Gil Hodges (.279) did the most damage with three hits apiece...Hodges uncorked his twelfth circuit clout and is tied with Cincy's Frank Robinson for the NL HR top spot...the Bums outhit New York sixteen to seven. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES 6 - BOSTON BRAVES 2 (first game)...In Boston at County Stadium all Philly starters got hits except for winning pitcher Steve Carlton (2-8 5.09)...he did his job on the mound and they did their job with the bats...Carlton whiffed ten Braves and restricted them to only five hits...only Wally Berger (.279) and Eddie Mathews (.264) did any damage...Berger with his sixth fourbagger and Mathews with a run batted in...Richie Ashburn (.317) and Bob Boone (.191) pasted three hits each for the Phils, which included Boone first roundtripper this season...Boston's Johnny Sain (1-3 4.10) took most of the bashing. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES 5 - BOSTON BRAVES 4 (second game)...Philadelphia surprised the third place Braves by beating them in both ends of the doubleheader and moving percentage points ahead of Cincinnati for fifth place in the standings...in the nightcap, Mike Schmidt (.231) was the star with an eighth inning blast off loser John Smoltz (3-5 4.66) that sealed it for the Phillies...it was his sixth this year...reliever Jack Baldschun (2-1 3.20) was used as a starter and again delivered the goods until he tired in the eighth, but he did get the win...Curt Shilling (2-6 4.46) got a hold and Jim Konstanty (3-4 3.58) flung a runless ninth for his fourth save. CHICAGO CUBS 6 - ST. LOUIS CARDINALS 5 (first game)...in St. Louis at Sportsman's Park in game one of a twinbill, Cub Hack Wilson was the man of the hour...he crushed a 415-foot homer...#10 this year...to up Chicago's margin to 6-1...then in the seventh he saved the day by throwing out Country Slaughter (.338) trying to tie the score from second on a single...winner Ed Reulbach (4-6 3.91) persevered until he needed help from Bruce Sutter (0-2 2.73) in the ninth to clinch the contest...it was Sutter first save...Frankie Frisch (.315) was 3-4 and scored three times for the Redbirds...John Tudor (4-2 2.79) had a tough time with the Chicubs and was dealt the defeat. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS 6 - CHICAGO CUBS 1 (second game)...the fourth place Cards Dizzy Dean (3-6 4.05) has had a mediocre season so far, but he had his good stuff today and responded with a pretty fair performance to help them divide the twinbill with the last place Cubs...he scattered eight hits and held the Cubs at bay in a complete game triumph...Dean (.222) even contributed a two-run single for the Redbird cause...Chicago's Hippo Vaughn (4-2 3.28) had a dismal day and was charged with the loss, being rapped for thirteen of the fifteen-hit total by St. Louis...the Cards Chick Hafey (.305) tagged three hits and two rbis and two runs scored, including the only roundtripper in the game, his fifth of the year and Rogers Hornsby (.297) hammered out four hits. I do go to your website, pretty much every couple updates on this site, and that supplements the overviews very nicely. The only thing I think would be helpful to those who do not use the website is posting the standings. You mention were a club is during the write ups, but something visual, showing GB could be useful. But I'm a fan, and I like what you do right now. Heck, I'd like you to go back to the even more detailed write ups, but I can understand how that is drain on your time. |

To do the detailed writeups simply takes too much time and would burn me out quickly...I would never get to play any games...my idea now is just to give the basics about a game in a very short concise recap...and this takes a while to do...for those that want greater detail they can go to the website and access the boxscores and look at the game log. As far as posting standings, I am a computer dunce. If someone will tell me step-by-step how to post the standings, I will try to do it. Question: Is it hard to access the website? Is that why you want detailed writeups? I have highspeed internet and a fine computer and it is no trouble for me to use the website. Does the quality of the computer make a difference? Does phone hookup for the internet make a difference? I am not happy with the progress of the website...the web designer has been very slow to complete it. It was begun in December and is only about 20% done. Soon and very soon, I will ask them to complete it or I will try to get another web designer. If anyone knows a professional web designer, who can complete it in a reasonable amount of time, please let me know their name and address. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-18-2005 at 04:53 PM. |

The league is rapidly reaching the halfway point of the first season. At mid-season I am going to add one Negro League star to each team. I will conduct a draft with the lower ranked teams picking first. A team's record will determine its draft position. Player selection will be based on the needs of each team...although it would be hard to pass up a Superstar at a position, even if you already had one at that position.
I did not want to want to include the great Negro stars after 10 or 15 years. I wanted them to compete at the same time as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx and Ty Cobb. I will hold another draft at the beginning of the next season and draft one more Negro star for each team. Thus, 32 Negro stars will be added each season. After the Negro stars are included, then I will add the Japanese stars and the Alltime Minor League greats. Finally I will add the Expansion Team greats to the original 16 franchises. This has long been one of my favorites EC, I view the website as a place to 'supplement' my information. Like, if I want to know how Johnny Kling or the Reds staff as a whole has been doing. I for one apprecitate the extra time you've put in to make a site for your league. Last edited by seth70liz76; 05-18-2005 at 09:43 PM. |

I just can't believe I just about finished another day's recap of all the games...and it got wiped out.
Kinda frustrating...if the Good Lord is willing and the creeks don't rise...I will attempt to type it again tomorrow. Boy...am I a bad and slow typist...and even worse with computers.
