The Highlanders have proved to be a much tougher team than they were originally given credit for. Their pitching staff continues to be the best in baseball despite having lost two of its stars over the past two seasons. This season, Howard Adams is an outstanding 11-2 with a 1.23 ERA. He is leading the staff, but he's only the #2 starter. The team's top starter, Jassen Nelson, has yet to pitch up to his standards. "The Irish Flame" Eddie Teague has begun to live up to his once-lofty potential after many mediocre seasons. He is 9-4 with a 2.52 ERA, but to his credit, he has spent many seasons buried behind 4 incredible starters in New York. Even the team's 4th starter, Michael Artrip, is having a strong season (7-3, 2.90). Washington slipped in May, going 12-15 and falling to 2nd Place. Meanwhile, the mighty Cleveland Broncos surged ahead to 3rd Place, thanks largely to an 11-game winning streak mid-month. Chicago and Pittsburgh have risen to the top in the NL. The Cubs were 18-9 in May and have taken a 2 game lead over the Pirates, who were 15-12 during the month. Remember, the Cubs still have never had a losing season in their 10-year history, but they only won the NL pennant once, and that was in 1905 when they also won the World Series. The defending World Champion Boston Rustlers were 10-17 in May and continue to sit in last place, now 10 games behind the Cubs. On a sad note, New York Giants' starting pitcher James Greenwell was lost for the season with a torn back muscle on May 11th. After receiving much medical advice, he decided to retire at the age of 36. He was named World Series MVP in 1907 when the Giants won their only title. He finished his career with a 152-117 record and a great 2.94 ERA. Batters of the Month: AL - Jeff Young, 2B, New York Highlanders - He hit .343 with 23 RBI, 23 runs scored and 2 home runs. NL - Jessie Goad, RF, Chicago Cubs - He hit .385 with 20 RBI, 14 runs scored and 4 homers. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Michael Artrip, New York Highlanders - He was 6-0 with a 1.65 ERA and 2 shutouts. NL - Hugh Tiedt, Chicago Cubs - He was 5-2 with a 1.52 ERA and 1 shutout. American League Standings New York (A) 36 15 .706 - Washington 28 23 .549 8.0 Cleveland 27 23 .540 8.5 Philadelphia (A) 27 25 .519 9.5 Detroit 24 26 .480 11.5 Chicago (A) 24 27 .471 12.0 St. Louis (A) 22 30 .423 14.5 Boston (A) 16 35 .314 20.0 National League Standings Chicago (N) 30 20 .600 - Pittsburgh 28 22 .560 2.0 Cincinnati 28 23 .549 2.5 Brooklyn 26 26 .500 5.0 Philadelphia (N) 25 25 .500 5.0 New York (N) 24 27 .471 6.5 St. Louis (N) 21 29 .420 9.0 Boston (N) 20 30 .400 10.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .297 with 12 RBI and 12 runs scored. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .323 with 10 RBI and 14 runs scored. "The German" has developed into a great everyday first baseman. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .324 with 10 RBI and 14 runs scored. Dummy Netsky, SP, New York (N) - Dummy was 1-3 with a 3.68 ERA through 6 starts. Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .352 with 14 RBI and 6 runs scored. Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 3-1 with a 6.62 ERA over 5 starts. John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .286 with 6 RBI and 6 runs scored. Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .287 with 7 RBI and 8 runs scored. Genaro Nunez, 2B, Chicago (A) - Tito hit .300 (6 for 20) with 5 runs scored. His playing time has been very limited, but he's played 6 games at SS, 5 at 2B and just 1 in CF. |

New York showed its mortality this month, going just 15-14. Washington cashed in, going 17-11 and gaining 2.5 games in the standings. Cleveland went 16-12 to gain 1.5 games of their own. Pittsburgh went 17-9 in June to take over first place, as the Cubs went just 12-14, falling 3 games behind. Meanwhile, Cincinnati moved into 2nd Place by going 16-11 on the month. Batters of the Month: AL - Steve Dinzler, CF, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .351 with 22 RBI and 13 runs scored. NL - "Butterball" Klehammer, C, New York Giants - He hit .358 with 9 RBI, 14 runs scored and 2 homers. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Jeremy Kalandros, Washington Senators - He was 4-1 with a 0.56 ERA and 4 shutouts! All this at the ripe old age of 39. NL - Allan Gilbrech, Boston Rustlers - He was 5-1 with a 1.19 ERA and 2 shutouts. American League Standings New York (A) 50 28 .641 - Philadelphia (A) 45 34 .570 5.5 Cleveland 43 35 .551 7.0 Washington 40 38 .513 10.0 Detroit 40 39 .506 10.5 Chicago (A) 32 45 .416 17.5 Boston (A) 31 46 .403 18.5 St. Louis (A) 31 47 .397 19.0 National League Standings Pittsburgh 45 31 .592 - Cincinnati 44 34 .564 2.0 Chicago (N) 42 34 .553 3.0 Philadelphia (N) 38 39 .494 7.5 Brooklyn 38 41 .481 8.5 New York (N) 36 42 .462 10.0 St. Louis (N) 34 42 .447 11.0 Boston (N) 32 46 .410 14.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .276 with 9 RBI and 20 runs scored. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit just .232 with 12 RBI and 12 runs scored, but he hit a whopping 4 home runs! Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .316 with 10 RBI, 13 runs scored and 2 homers. At age 22, he is beginning to develop into the type of player the Giants had been hoping for. Dummy Netsky, SP, New York (N) - Dummy was 2-5 with a 4.60 ERA through 7 starts. Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .374 with 8 RBI and 16 runs scored. He is having another great season, despite the Rustlers' poor start. Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 2-4 with a 3.04 ERA including 1 shutout over 6 starts. That shutout was the first of his career. It came on June 8th against the Reds. He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in that 9 inning victory. John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .353 with 5 RBI, 3 runs scored and 2 homers in just 17 at-bats until he pulled his achilles tendon on June 13th. He is still fit enough to play, but the team felt it was better to put him on the shelf as a precaution. He missed the rest of June and could miss most of July as well. Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .250 with 10 RBI and 7 runs scored. Genaro Nunez, 2B, Chicago (A) - Tito hit .238 (5 for 21) with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored. |

This month could be called the "Tale of Two Teams." In the AL, Cleveland went 18-7 in July. They swept New York early in the month, and then they went on a 9-game winning streak late in the month. All in all, they climbed into 2nd place and currently sit only 1.5 games off the lead. The Chicago Cubs tore up the NL this month, also going 18-7. Pittsburgh's 17-8 record is all that kept them in first, as the Cubs leapfrogged the Reds, but gained just one game on Pittsburgh. Terrible news for the Pirates, though, as their star catcher Jim Drybread was lost for the season with a serious leg injury. We'll see how that loss affects the team, since they were just 7-7 this month after losing him. On the injury front, July was a terrible month medically. Along with Drybread's injury, several other key ones were suffered this month. The biggest of all however, was an unfortunate outfield mishap in which Boston Rustlers' star leftfielder "Buzzard" Getchell collided with the outfield wall. He was able to finish the game, but he was rushed to a hospital afterward. There he underwent surgery, but later died. This marks the first baseball related death in the game's history. On a brighter note, Pittsburgh's "Ray of Light" Brown hit for the cycle on July 29th against Brooklyn. He was the first player to do it since 1908. Also, a big trade this month sent the Giants' powerful catcher "Butterball" Klehammer to the Reds in exchange for ace Carl Garvan, who had collected 182 wins over his career in Cincinnati, which is the 9th highest total of all time. Batters of the Month: AL - "Frenchie" Fournier, 3B, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .336 with 16 RBI and 24 runs scored. NL - Campbell Ditty, CF, New York Giants - He hit .380 with 14 RBI, 12 runs scored and 3 homers. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Raymond Gindler, St. Louis Browns - He was 6-1 with a 1.41 ERA and 1 shutout. NL - Bren Ozaki, Pittsburgh Pirates - He was 5-0 with a 0.60 ERA and 3 shutouts. American League Standings New York (A) 63 41 .606 - Cleveland 61 42 .592 1.5 Philadelphia (A) 57 47 .548 6.0 Washington 52 51 .505 10.5 Detroit 51 54 .486 12.5 Chicago (A) 44 58 .431 18.0 St. Louis (A) 44 60 .423 19.0 Boston (A) 42 61 .408 20.5 National League Standings Pittsburgh 62 39 .614 - Chicago (N) 60 41 .594 2.0 Cincinnati 57 45 .559 5.5 Brooklyn 50 54 .481 13.5 Philadelphia (N) 48 54 .471 14.5 St. Louis (N) 44 57 .436 18.0 Boston (N) 44 58 .431 18.5 New York (N) 43 60 .417 20.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .355 with 13 RBI and 14 runs scored, helping to lead Cleveland's resurgance. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit just .231 with 7 RBI and 9 runs scored, making this 2 relatively unproductive months in a row. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty had the best month of his career and was named BOTM (see above). He was also named POTW on July 25th after having an incredible game against the Cardinals on the 22nd in which he collected 6 hits and 2 RBI! Dummy Netsky, SP, New York (N) - Dummy was 0-5 with a 4.50 ERA through 6 starts. Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .329 with 11 RBI and 9 runs scored. Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 1-4 with a 3.81 ERA over 7 starts. He has moved up to the team's #3 starter. John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops returned to the lineup on July 22nd and hit .297 (11 for 37) with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .304 with 10 RBI and 16 runs scored. The Sox are not the roll-over doormat they were in previous seasons, and they actually have the 4th best team batting average in baseball. Genaro Nunez, 2B, Chicago (A) - Tito hit .393 (11 for 28) with 4 RBI and 8 runs scored. He also hit the first home run of his career on July 24th against the Boston Red Sox. The loss of catcher Jim Drybread obviously affected the Pirates more than anyone anticipated. Pittsburgh went just 13-18 in August, falling into 2nd Place. The Cubs took complete advantage of the opportunity by going 22-8 this month to take a mighty 7.5 game lead in the NL with just 4 weeks to go. The Cubs continued to win despite losing their ace "Evil" Gary Archer to an elbow injury on August 15th. He is expected to return in mid-September. In the AL, New York went 17-12 to increase their lead over Cleveland to 3.5 games. The Broncos were just 15-14 in August. After the first player in 3 years hit for the cycle last month, it happened again in August. Brooklyn's 25-year-old catcher Harry Tromp executed the feat on August 17th against flailing Pittsburgh. Batters of the Month: AL - Justin Tucker, RF, New York Highlanders - He hit .386 with 22 RBI, 23 runs scored and 2 homers. NL - Boris "The Bear" Lavender, 1B, Chicago Cubs - He hit .404 with 20 RBI, 16 runs scored and 2 homers. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Dorsey MacIntyre, Boston Red Sox - He was 7-0 with a 1.55 ERA and 2 shutouts. NL - Bowie Castellon, Chicago Cubs - He was 7-1 with a 1.59 ERA and 2 shutouts. American League Standings New York (A) 80 53 .602 - Cleveland 76 56 .576 3.5 Philadelphia (A) 71 61 .538 8.5 Washington 67 66 .504 13.0 Detroit 65 67 .492 14.5 Boston (A) 62 70 .470 17.5 St. Louis (A) 55 77 .417 24.5 Chicago (A) 53 79 .402 26.5 National League Standings Chicago (N) 82 49 .626 - Pittsburgh 75 57 .568 7.5 Cincinnati 74 58 .561 8.5 Brooklyn 64 68 .485 18.5 Philadelphia (N) 60 71 .458 22.0 St. Louis (N) 60 71 .458 22.0 Boston (N) 57 74 .435 25.0 New York (N) 54 78 .409 28.5 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .311 with 10 RBI and 14 runs scored. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit just .278 with 17 RBI and 11 runs scored. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .324 with 16 RBI, 16 runs scored and 2 homers. Dummy Netsky, SP, New York (N) - Dummy was 2-5 with a 4.39 ERA through 8 starts. He also had his first complete game of the season, which admittedly is a rarity in the age of the complete game. Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .329 with 11 RBI and 9 runs scored. Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 1-4 with a 3.81 ERA over 7 starts. He has moved up to the team's #3 starter. John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .292 with 14 RBI and 14 runs scored. Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .384 with 8 RBI and 12 runs scored. Forget about what I said about the White Sox no longer being doormats. They were 9-21 in August Genaro Nunez, 2B, Chicago (A) - Tito hit .171 (6 for 35) with 1 RBI. |

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES AND ALL PLAYER PAGES
September 26, 1911 The Cubs entered the final month of the season with a 7.5 game lead. They were then swept by 2nd Place Pittsburgh in a 4-game series, and after the first week of September, that lead had shrunk to 3.5 games. The Cubs then lost 3-of-4 to the 3rd Place Reds and after the second week of September, the Cubs and Pirates were tied for first. The Reds went on to sweep Pittsburgh in 3 games, and after week 3 of September, there was a three-way tie for first between the Cubs, Pirates and Reds. The teams continued to battle, and with just 2 days left in the season, all three were still tied for first. The Cubs lost their game on that next-to-last day, and the Reds and Pirates won. On the final day, the Cubs won, the Reds lost and the Pirates won, giving Pittsburgh their 3rd NL pennant in four years. In the AL, New York and Cleveland went head-to-head in six September games. They split the series 3-3, allowing the Highlanders to maintain their 2 game lead. Going into the final week of the season, New York still had that same 2 game lead. They beat the Red Sox in 2-of-3 games, while Cleveland dropped 2-of-3 to Philadelphia, handing New York their 3rd AL pennant in four years. Batters of the Month: AL - Jeff Young, 2B, New York Highlanders - He hit .375 with 12 RBI and 16 runs scored. NL - William Epps, 1B, Brooklyn Dodgers - He hit .417 with 10 RBI, 11 runs scored and 2 homers. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-1 with a 1.00 ERA and 3 shutouts. NL - Will Haggan, Boston Rustlers - He was 4-2 with a 1.02 ERA. American League Standings New York (A) 92 62 .597 - Cleveland 90 64 .584 2.0 Philadelphia (A) 79 75 .513 13.0 Washington 78 76 .506 14.0 Boston (A) 73 81 .474 19.0 Detroit 73 81 .474 19.0 St. Louis (A) 67 87 .435 25.0 Chicago (A) 64 90 .416 28.0 National League Standings Pittsburgh 89 65 .578 - Chicago (N) 88 66 .571 1.0 Cincinnati 88 66 .571 1.0 Brooklyn 76 78 .494 13.0 Boston (N) 72 82 .468 17.0 St. Louis (N) 72 82 .468 17.0 Philadelphia (N) 70 84 .455 19.0 New York (N) 61 93 .396 28.0 World Series This is the third time in four years that the Pirates and Highlanders faced off in the World Series. New York won in 1908 and Pittsburgh won in 1909. After a year away from the series for both teams, they return but with a slightly different look. New York has always been known for dominant pitchers. They are still great, but not as dominant as they were in 1908. But, the team's offense is vastly improved. The Pirates have always been known for their incredible offense. That offense has changed and is no longer #1 in baseball, but they're still among the best. Plus, their pitching staff regained its form of those previous pennant winning seasons. The one thing that has not changed for the Pirates is the fact that they are winning with a largely unsung pitching staff, whom many reporters claim are less talented than they appear. My Prediction: This Series is very closely matched, and these two teams have certainly done this before. The two are becoming October rivals, as we have never before seen teams that consistently appeared in the Series before them. A slight edge has to go to New York for a pitching staff that is far more talented. New York wins in 6. Pittsburgh 1 - New York 3: As has become the norm, Game 1 was a pitchers duel. Pittsburgh had a 1-run lead until New York scored 3 runs (2 unearned) in the 7th. The Pirates got two runners on base in the 9th with two outs, but third baseman Alan Klemm grounded out to end the game. Pittsburgh 7 - New York 1: The Pirates offense scored 2 in the 1st inning and 5 more in the 7th to run away with this one. Steady Dave Zike allowed just one run on 4 hits and 3 walks through 9 innings. New York 3 - Pittsburgh 0: In the first postseason start of his career, "The Irish Flame" Eddie Teague shut down the mighty Pirates on 6 hits and a walk. New York 7 - Pittsburgh 0: New York scored 5 runs in the 8th and 9th innings to blow this one open, but it was a close game most of the way. New York's Jassen Nelson threw a gem, allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk. New York 1 - Pittsburgh 3: Dave Zike once again saved the day, allowing just 1 run even though he allowed 10 hits and a walk. Even though he didn't have his best stuff, he pitched out of every jam he had to. Pittsburgh 2 - New York 4: This game was tied 1-1 until the top of the 8th when Pittsburgh's first baseman Edward Brantsag hit a solo home run to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. However, in the bottom of that inning, New York got a walk, two singles a double and a sac fly to score 3 runs on their way to a 4-2 victory. woohoo... right again! Not bad to hit it on the head twice in 11 years... "Barefoot" Atkins was named World Series MVP. With two New York pitchers going 2-0, the award came down to the offense where Atkins was the most dominant. The centerfielder hit .478 in the series with 6 RBI. Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .288 with 13 RBI and 9 runs scored in September. Final: .312, 1 HR, 73 RBI, 85 R, 500 AB, 156 H, 12 2B, 24 3B, 27 K, 34 BB, 39-11 SB, .797 OPS... Not a typical year for Whiskey... It was the lowest AVG and 2nd lowest OPS of his career... Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle struggled to hit .217 in September with 13 RBI and 5 runs scored as the Reds once again fell just short of the pennant. Final: .268, 4 HR, 65 RBI, 62 R, 529 AB, 142 H, 20 2B, 15 3B, 77 K, 48 BB, 13-5 SB, .711 OPS... He set career highs in 2B, K, BB, SB Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .306 with 2 RBI and 7 runs scored. Final: .320, 7 HR, 62 RBI, 69 R, 569 AB, 182 H, 29 2B, 3 3B, 72 K, 25 BB, 5-3 SB, .767 OPS... This was by far the best season of his career at age 23... It was the first time he hit over .300... 1912
Once again, both New York and Cleveland are the early favorites in the AL. Both teams still feature their trademark strengths - New York's pitching and Cleveland's offense. This season, Philadelphia, Washington and even Boston has to be taken seriously. Even St. Louis has improved and hopes to display their improvement on the field. Chicago, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are again the NL's elite, but the league is highly competitive as always. New York and Philadelphia have to be considered serious contenders. Even Brooklyn and Boston have an outside shot this season. During the offseason, three teams moved into new stadiums. The Red Sox will play in new Fenway Park, the Reds move into Crosley Field and Detroit takes over new Tiger Stadium. The biggest change has to be for the Reds, as Crosley Field tends to favor pitchers after their previous home, the Palace of the Fans, was much more offense-friendly. Also, the NL's Boston franchise changed their name for the second season in a row. They will now be known as the Braves. Key Retirees: Nicholas Lawton, LF, Brooklyn Superbas 1901-1908, St. Louis Browns 1908-1909, Philadelphia Athletics 1909-1911 - Lawton collected 1594 hits (11th most all-time) over his 11-year career. He retires with a .320 career average (7th All-Time), 549 RBI and 566 runs. Jason Tedford, 2B, Chicago Cubs 1901-1910 - Tedford was unable to make the Cubs lineup in 1911, instead playing in the minor leagues. He retired after the 1911 season with 1432 career hits (24th All-Time) and a .322 average (5th All-Time). He also won the World Series with the Cubs in 1905. "Buzzard" Getchell, LF, Boston Doves/Rustlers 1903-1911 - After an unfortunate injury that cost him his young life, Getchell's career numbers are still impressive. At age 32 and with just 9 major league seasons, he had 1267 hits, 584 RBI (19th All-Time), 542 runs and a .290 average. He also won the 1910 World Series with Boston. James Greenwell, SP, New York Giants 1902-1911 - Greenwell ends his career with a 152-117 record (21st Most Career Wins), 2.94 ERA (14th All-Time), 1268 K's (13th All-Time), 226 complete games and 30 shutouts (17th All-Time). He also won a World Series in 1907 with the Giants. Ancestors Added NONE |
