SI SUPREME DEFENDING CHAMP JACKSON ALREADY IN FIRST PLACE
The Jackson Jackalopes served notice that they would like to repeat as South Island Supreme League champion... it's only two games into the season, but the Jacks took the top spot by smashing the Delta Stars 15-2 Sunday afternoon... Jackson is now the only unbeaten club in the league... St. Pete raised some eyebrows with a 12-2 thrashing of the Braxton Bruins... maybe the Pelicans are better than they showed in the first weekend of play... in the third game yesterday, Bar Harbor blasted the Pelham Oaks 9-2

BY A HANK OF HAIR BLACK CATS CLING TO 1ST PLACE IN SI SECONDARY AFTER FIRST TWO WEEKS
The Columbia Black Cats have taken a liking to their new league, the South Island Secondary League... they are perched atop the standings with a perfect 2-0 mark... win number two came over the Littleville Supermen 5-4 Sunday afternoon... the Black Cats have the lead all to themselves... thus far, everybody is pretty much beating up on each other... Grin Hills bombed Moon Valley 11-2... and Billings took care of Gull Lake 11-8... four clubs are 1-1 on the season.

MY LIFE IN 1955
EC's Trying' To Survive in '55

I've got a lot of catching up to do... it's June and it's good to be back in Mobile after a short stay in Prichard... my family has a nice 2-bedroom apartment on Westwood Street... that's in the Loop Area in Mobile... my stepfather John Davis is the assistant manager at the Ranch Restaurant on Government Street... it's a nice, fancy restaurant with really good food... the clientele is middle and upper middle class... some rich folks, too... my sister and I will soon have a new sibling in the family... my Mama is expecting a baby and is due in December... I worked fulltime at the Ranch in the summertime, so I didn't get to play any baseball... my buddies at Crawford Park won the City Recreation baseball title and got to play the title game at Hartwell Field before a Mobile Bears' game.... I would have been the third baseman... really missed playing ball... my Mama wanted me to work to please my new stepfather... so I did it for her... I started as a bus boy at the restaurant, but soon was switched to the dishwasher... then I became the pots and pans man... I made about $20 a week for 40 hours... about $10 for the weekend shifts... in addition to missing the baseball season in '55, during school, I couldn't go to the high school football games because I worked from 3 pm to 11 pm at the Ranch Restaurant on Friday and Saturday... I missed out on a lot at Murphy High School because of this... I think I only saw one high school game in my three years... I went to see Murphy play University Military School one year because both teams were unbeaten at the time.

This was the beginning of my social isolation that would go on for about the next 10 years... except for high school classes and church services on Sunday, EC became a semi-social recluse... I didn't mix with anyone after school, except for playing basketball with my buddies in the Mobile City Recreation League and the Mobile YMCA... but I did have friends in school classes and got along well with my classmates, boys and girls... I just didn't get real close to anyone... why?... don't really know... I was self-conscious of my gapped teeth and my slightly crossed left eye and I thought no girl would go out with me because of my ugly teeth and my eyes... also EC couldn't dance and wouldn't try to learn to dance... EC has a bad character trait... he's afraid to fail, so EC just only does what he can do well... and in my mind, no girl would date a guy who couldn't dance, which is not true... lots of guys don't dance, but I didn't know it... EC had a warped sense of reality... movies and music influenced me way too much... life is perfect in movies and EC used that as his standard... if I couldn't do something very well, I wouldn't even attempt it... that is a terrible way to be... sadly I have been that way all of my life... it really limits life possibilities.

No worry, don't feel bad for EC... my life has been truly wonderful overall... just a few rough places in the journey over the years.

In September I began the 10th grade at Murphy High School... it is located in the Loop area in Mobile and was within walking distance of my apartment complex... I walked the 15-20 blocks to school each day... my homeroom teacher was a real nice lady named Mrs. Bivona... she would remain my homeroom teacher for all my three years at Murphy... the school nickname was the Golden Panthers... our colors were Light Blue and Gold... Murphy was the largest high school in the South with over 2000 students in just three grades... Murphy had no freshman class... Mobile had junior high schools for the 9th graders... I went to Barton Academy... Murphy's campus was like a good-sized college campus... it must have covered 6 square city blocks... it had large complexes for each subject... math building, science building, physical education building, fine arts building, library, auditorium and main building... it was huge... we had a football stadium on campus, but just used it for practice... Murphy played their home games at Ladd Memorial Stadium, where the Senior Bowl Classic is played each year... Murphy also held commencement and graduation at Ladd... my graduating class had 922 students in it... there might be 5,000 people or more at graduation each year.

JACKSON STILL ON TOP AND UNBEATEN IN SI SUPREME LEAGUE
The Jackson Jackalopes continued their winning ways in the South Island Supreme League... the Jacks shut down the last place Braxton Bruins 2-0 for their 3rd win in a row in the new season... Bar Harbor (2-1) and Pelham (2-1) hung close, just a game behind... the Acadians nudged St. Pete 6-5 with a late ninth-inning comeback... and the Oaks got some sharp pitching in the 5-0 whitewash of the Delta Stars.

MY LIFE IN 1956
EC's In a Fix in '56

Sorry, I have gotten out of my rhythm and pattern of posting... I need to get back to regular posts.

Well, it's April, 1956... and EC is in a fix... but it's my own fault... nobody else's... can't blame it on my stepfather... he was a good decent guy... God bless me with him... he took care of the family very well... I'm just too shy and socially awkward and I couldn't dance... ... that's really crazy, because I love music... but I only do things when I look good doing them... and I have gapped teeth, too... and I won't do anything to change my ways... no girl in her right mind is going to go out with a guy like EC... so I just drift lonely through life... playing basketball with my friends, but not mixing and mingling with them after school and developing as a normal teenager... my buddies were beginning to date and hang out at drive-in in the evenings, while I was going to a lot of movies alone... and working on the weekend as a pot washer in the Ranch Restaurant every Friday and Saturday... I couldn't go to the Murphy High football games... sadly I missed out on sock hops and after-the-game dances.

However, I did get my crossed eye fixed with surgery... this was at the beginning of the school year... my eye was fixed, but the sad thing is it wasn't fixed in my head... so I still was burdened with this psychological affliction, that I created... to a great extent, you are what you think you are, whether you are that way or not... 10 years from now, a psych major at LSUNO would get me to read a book "Psycho-Cybernetics" and it would help change my life... I learned what confidence and positive thinking can do for your self-esteem... EC was nowhere near as bad as he thought he was... wish I had read the book in my Sophomore year.

No, EC wouldn't go back and change anything in my life... in the end, it has come out to be a wonderful life... wouldn't change a thing.

The last good year I had was in '53 in the 8th grade... my life has been on the decline since then... 9th grade at Barton was a loser year, both socially and academically... I also digressed in baseball... I'm now at Murphy High School in the 10th grade... what's it like?... lots of pretty gals, yes indeed... but in EC's mind, none of them are interested in him... but EC can dream and fantasize in his mind... but EC doesn't have the confidence or nerve to ask one of these pretty ladies out... I just admire them from a distance... in class, I'm friendly, outgoing, pleasant and easy to get along with, but I had a way of agravating the teachers at times in a good-natured way with cute comments or questions... I think I did this to gain attention... EC wanted to impress the guys and the girls... I was one of the cut-ups in the class and was pretty good at it... people seemed to like me... and I was a good student, but I didn't study any... EC was mostly an A student in history, social studies, general science and english... physics, chemistry, trigonometry gave me fits, especially when I did not try to study it and learn it... made C's and D's in those courses... as I said EC was just drifting through his life and not doing anything to change it in a positive manner... EC had no motivation or purpose in life... just call me the lonely drifter.

But I enjoyed my home room class with Walter Wilson, George Clausen, Herman Van Devender and Bobby Morgan... Herman never missed a day of school in his life... I learned this at graduation when they singled him out with a special award... No, EC didn't quite qualify for the Perfect Attendance Award... I played hooky my senior year 40 times and often would skip classes... Walter was a cut-up like me... we kept Mrs. Bivona busy in home room, trying to tone us down... we skipped a lot of classes together, too... we had some cute girls in home room... Sue Sheppard and Jean Galloway... I kind of had a crush on them... looking back, they might have had a crush on me, too... sadly, none of us spoke up... guys and gals were pretty shy in high school in the 50s... it was 10 years in the future when I learned from my best friend in college that the worst thing a girl can do to a guy is say "no"... it ain't life or death... his philosophy was to ask 10 pretty girls out and maybe one would say "yes".... he was not handsome at all, but my best friend dated a lot of good-looking gals.

3-WAY TIE IN SI SUPREME LEAGUE WITH OAKS, JACKS, CAJUNS ON TOP
Three teams, Pelham, Jackson and Bar Harbor are atop the standings in the South Island Supreme League after the four weeks of action... Pelham caused the deadlock by sending the Jackson Jackalopes down to their first defeat of the season 7-2... Bar Harbor destroyed the Braxton Bruins 18-6... in the other contest Delta went extra innings to take care of the St. Pete Pelicans in a high-scoring thriller 11-7.
