Summary

It's been an excellent year for the Sea Dogs, who look primed for a post-season run.

What's Gone Right

Hrbek & Murcer. Kent Hrbek and Bobby Murcer have combined for 34 homeruns and 102 RBIs, anchoring a strong lineup.

Excess of Catchers. Joe Mauer and Iván Rodríguez are both putting up spectacular numbers from behind the plate. Mauer's are slightly better (and he has played far more), but Rodríguez still has an OPS over .900. Mauer is 22, Rodríguez 20, and at some point you would think a blockbuster trade might happen around one of them.

That Staff. This maybe the strongest pitching staff, end-to-end, in the league, from starters Walter Johnson, Bert Blyleven, and the surprising Wade Miller to Elmer Brown and Johan Santana at the back of the bullpen to the amazing emergence of Joseíto Muñoz.

What's Gone Wrong

2B, or not. Fred Dunlap is heading towards Greg Litton like numbers, and given those two are the options at 2 for the Sea Dogs, it's not pretty. Litton's versatility maintains his roster spot, but something must be done here.

The Allure of Power. Both Gil Hodges and Jeff Burroughs have power. Hodges is second on the team with 17 homeruns, Burroughs has 10. But neither can get their OPS over .700, which make them a bit one dimensional for a championship contender.

Putting the Train Back on Track. Nineteen-year old Walter Johnson started this year looking like the best arm in the WBL. Since then, he's become merely good. If Portland can get the earlier version back, it would go a long way in the postseason.

Key Storylines

The pair of Murcer and Hrbek need to maintain their level of production and the Sea Dogs need another couple of players to step it up. Similarly, the rotation has the potential to be truly great--the closer they get to it, the further Portland will go.

Long term, there's a need to figure out the C question--Rodríguez is just too good to be a backup for too much longer, especially given the dearth of catching talent elsewhere in the league.

Trading Outlook

BUYING!

A few upgrades, and this could be a championship team. The catching deal is always out there in the shadows, but aside from that, it looks more like minor league parts on the market, unless Mike Cuellar gets some interest.

AAA Shuttle

Adrián Beltré is demanding more playing time since his recall. Couple his performance with that of Muñoz, and it's been quite a success.

Midseason Changes

Muñoz joins the rotation, forcing Smokey Joe Wood to the bullpen on his return from injury. Jim Kern and Pascual Pérez head to AAA.

Summary

The Marvin Miller is a hard division. The Sea Lions are over .500, and within striking distance of Portland, but it will take some doing.

What's Gone Right

REG-GIE REG-GIE. Those chants may turn into MVP MVP MVP by the end of the year. Reggie Jackson is threatening the triple crown and while that feels very unlikely, well, he's got a shot.

The Rest of the Lineup. Bobby Bonds and AAA find Pedro Guerrero have OPS' just under .900; Jimmy Bloodworth, Rickey Henderson, Jack Clark, and Wally Moon follow them without a real weak link.

High End Arms. Lefty Grove, Rod Beck, Ken Howell, Charlie Root, and Diego Seguí have all performed excellently in their roles.

What's Gone Wrong

The Rest of the Arms. Jim Devlin and Cy Falkenberg have pitched themselves back to AAA, but it's not clear who is there to replace them.

Achilles' Heels. Henderson has 52 steals and an OBP around .400 ... but little else. John Beckwith hits the ball as hard as anyone in the league ... but only to a .700 OPS. Clark has power ... but not much else. There are significant questions about many key contributors.

Shortstop. Dick Lundy solved this ... and then he got hurt, putting San Francisco back in the hands of Eddie Joost, who has a good eye, some power, but cannot put it all together in a way that lifts his OPS over .600.

Key Storylines

Can the new players--Guerrero, Lundy, Seguí--keep up their torrid pace? And can a team likely to stay pat during the trading period improve in the second half?

The continued development of Grove bears watching, and the OF has storylines at all three spots: is Jackson's triple crown pursuit for real? Can Henderson improve offensively to complement his unworldly base-stealing? And can Bonds continue to perform at a very high level?

Trading Outlook

HOLDING.

Bob Cerv and Moon could each move on in search of more playing time, but that's about it.

AAA Shuttle

Guerrero and Seguí look to be true gems, as did Lundy before his injury, and both Cerv and Miguel Cairo have started very well. Overall, it's been quite a success.

Midseason Changes

Falkenberg and Devlin head to AAA, with Nick Altrock coming back, as well as Dennis Eckersley, who struggled mightily to start the year with the big league club.

Summary

The House of David is too good to tank for the season, but really don't have a shot at catching the three teams ahead of them.

What's Gone Right

Elrod & Stone. Probably the least likely dominant duo in the league. C Elrod Hendricks and OF George Stone are among the best in the league, with OPS' approaching 1.000.

Pete Browning. Pete Browning has played in just over half of the House of David's games. In that time he has been one of their dominant players, electrifying at the plate and on the basepaths.

Surprises on the Mound. The best arms for the House of David may not be who was expected, but that doesn't mean the trio of SP Jack Taylor, RP Bob Rush, and closer Bruce Sutter haven't been excellent.

What's Gone Wrong

Pete Browning's Health. Like I said, Browning has played in just over half of their games, making two trips to the DL.

Big Red. Mark McGwire puts on a great show in batting practice ... but has hit himself down to AAA once the games start.

Not Enough Help. Dan Ford has been a pleasant surprise and Ryne Sandberg solid at 2B. Beyond that ... it's all pure mediocrity.

Key Storylines

The biggest is whether the pitching staff can come together. There have been moments when it seemed on the verge, but then C.C. Sabathia or Rollie Fingers or someone else would start to struggle.

Browning's health is probably the most important thing, though. The performances of Hendricks and Stone have been excellent, if Browning is able to add to them, they House of David could move into contention.

Trading Outlook

BUYING.

Or maybe holding. Or buying.

How do they convert some of the aging value they have into talent without totally tanking the season? Players like Lee Smith, Sandberg, Sutter, and Ford would have value, but only if the House of David is no longer trying to compete this season ... which makes it sound like they should stand pat until the later trading period.

AAA Shuttle

Ford has earned a starting OF role. Other than that, not a ton of help so far.

Frank Chance, McGwire, and Jim Edmonds all head back to AAA.

{The day after the All Star break is the first major trading period of the season, followed by the day before the trade deadline. Trades are somewhat randomized and limited in a variety of ways, basically an effort to ensure that, over time, they are at least approximately even in value.}

Portland signaled their commitment to this year, sending prized P prospect Smokey Joe Wood and Devin Mesoraco to Kansas City for all-star 2B Rogers Hornsby, OF Vince Coleman, and a 4th round draft pick.

Perhaps the prize pitching performer on the market, Birmingham's Tim Hudson, went to San Francisco in exchange for Rube Melton, Derrick May, and a 3rd round pick.

Brooklyn sends P Don Sutton to the New York Gothams for Ps Ray Lamb, Gil Heredia, and Lew Krausse, Jr., OF Don Mueller, and both a 1st and 8th round draft pick.

Cleveland made a clear sign of intent to compete this year, sending four players (P Hardie Henderson and OFs Jap Payne, Darrell Miller, and Gibby Brack) to Philadelphia for all-star reliever Ron Reed.

The Spiders also picked up Houston's struggling OF Lance Berkman to add more pop to their lineup, sending OF Harry Stovey, IF Charlie Grimm, P Chad Qualls, and a 3rd round pick to the Colt 45's.

Media darling Tom Herr has a shot at a championship after Birmingham shipped the all-star 2B to the New York Black Yankees in exchange for a haul of talent, including IFs Moose Skowron and Reddy Mack, OFs Bill Buckner and Charlie Keller, P Heathcliff Slocumb, and a 10th round draft pick.

The Black Yankees also picked up some help on the mound, sending IF Dick Bartell, OF Sam Thompson, and a 4th round pick to Ottawa for Gary Lavelle and Jamie Moyer.

Addressing an area of clear need, Baltimore traded for Miami's everyday 3B, Manny Machado. The Black Sox sent a package of P Mike Morgan, 1B Richie Sexson, 3B Joe Dugan, and C Chris Hoiles to the Cuban Giants.

The Black Sox also shored up their bullpen, bringing in Memphis' closer, Joe Beggs, in exchange for P Willie Sudhoff, OF Alex Johnson, and a 4th round pick.

Ottawa and Los Angeles pulled off a complicated deal, with the Angels receiving 1B Carlos Delgado, IF Steve Garvey and OF Spud Johnson, sending OF Rusty Staub and Carlos Beltrán, C Jim Stephens, and Ps Dave Bennett and Sean O'Sullivan to the Mounties.

The Chicago American Giants added two of the better starting pitchers on the market, acquiring Don Newcombe from Miami and Dick Rudolph from Birmingham. The American Giants also received RP Clay Condrey and a 4th round draft pick for Minnie Miñoso from Miami, and sent Melky Cabrera, A. Rube Foster, Adrián González, and a 2nd round pick to Birmingham for Rudolph and Hoyt Wilhelm.

The American Giants also brought in SS Freddy Parent, who is expected to step right into the starting lineup. To do so, they sent IFs Sibby Sisti and Rickie Weeks and OF Bob Watson to Ottawa.

Miami's other significant trade piece, Tommy Bridges, heads to San Francisco for two minor league pitchers, Shawn Estes and Turk Wendell, and a 5th round draft pick.

Los Angeles picked up some outfield help in the form of San Francisco's Wally Moon. Moon heads south along with OF Dwayne Murphy and 2 draft picks (one 4th round, one 6th) in exchange for C Brian Downing, IF Kurt Stillwell, and P Dave LaRoche.

Detroit looked to improve their position behind the plate, obtaining Ernie Lombardi from Indianapolis for IFs Donie Bush and Jorge Orta, OF Gene Martin, P Brandon League, and a 2nd round pick.

Brooklyn added another versatile piece, sending OF Curt Flood, IF Manny Trillo, and a 6th round pick to Birmingham for IF Frank Isbell.

Two clubs looking towards the future made a big move, with Houston sending a 5th round pick, P Stubby Overmire, 2B DJ LeMahieu, P Jim Kaat, and OF Hack Wilson to Memphis for P Roger Clemens.

Sammy Sosa struggled so much for the House of David, it was decided the young OF could do with a change of scenery, going (along with a 5th round draft pick) to Memphis in exchange for OFs Fred Lynn and Tony Conigliaro and a 2nd round pick.

Finally, in easily the most minor deal of the day, Homestead picked up a 2nd round pick and IF Steve Hertz from San Francisco in exchange for Phil Garner.

And with all that, we are back from the first All-Star Break!

The theme in Series XIX was what came after the great starting pitching, as three of the games feature no-hitters in the early going.

#Chicago American Giants @ Brooklyn Royal Giants, Game Four

The American Giants would send Dick Rudolph to the mind, hoping to salvage a split of the series against Brooklyn, with the Royal Giants countering with young Sandy Koufax.

Frank Isbell--acquired by Brooklyn over the all-star break--singled off Rudolph in the bottom of the first and Jermaine Dye singled and scored on a double by Duke Snider in the bottom of the 4th.

And that was it.

Rudolph was good. But Koufax was masterful.

He was perfect through five innings before walking Mike Fiore and Freddy Parent to start the 6th, and didn't allow a hit until the top of the 8th, when Dick Allen led off with a single and, after Carlton Fisk whiffed, Fiore hit a homerun. That was it for Koufax, who was clearly tiring, but what a performance!

After Koufax was replaced by Trevor Hildenberger, Freddy Parent singled and scored on a double by Magglio Ordóñez, putting Chicago in front, 3-1.

Rudolph allowed six hits, but only the single run through 7 innings. But his replacement, Sonny Dixon, wasn't as strong, allowing a leadoff double to Beals Becker in the bottom of the 8th, and eventually seeing Becker score on a groundout from Dye.

Chicago sent their closer, A.J. Minter, to the mound in the bottom of the 9th with a 3-2 lead. Roy White doubled to lead off the inning, but Minter retired Ron Cey and Hi Myers, putting the American Giants one out away from the win ... but Al López ripped a single through the infield, scoring White and sending the game to extra innings.

Fisk started the extra frame with a double off Eric Gagne. After one out, Parent--acquired as the final piece in Chicago's postseason push--hit his second homerun as an American Giant, making the score 5-3.

Minter retired Isbell to start the bottom of the tenth, and was then replaced by Clay Condrey to close the game. But Germany Smith, in his first at-bat in the big leagues, greeted Condrey with the first hit of his WBL career, a homerun that just cleared the right field fence. Condrey retired Jackie Robinson for the second out, and walked Duke Snider. Up stepped White, who has really been the heart and soul of Brooklyn all year ... and he deposited Condrey's pitch into the right-field stands for a walk off victory for Brooklyn.

#Other Games of Note

Two games from the Los Angeles Angels' visit to Memphis bear mentioning. In the first, Los Angeles jumped out to 6-0 lead while Doc Gooden carried a no-hitter through 4 innings before Jim Pagliaroni singled with one out in the fifth. Two singles and a walk would chase Gooden ... and then the wheels would come off for the Angels, who ended up giving up 7 runs in the inning. Mike Trout would hit one out of the park in the 8th to put them ahead, and the Angels, led by Carlos Delgado's 4-for-5 debut after his acquisition from Ottawa, would win, 9-7.

Another pitcher would take a no-hitter into the middle of the third game of the series, but it wasn't the WBL leader in wins, Los Angeles' Gerrit Cole. Instead, Memphis' Tim Wakefield had his knuckleball dancing, not allowing a hit until Don Buford's solo homerun in the top of the 6th. The back end of the Angels' bullpen wasn't available, forcing Los Angeles to turn to Harry Howell to close out the game, which didn't work out well, as Memphis' David Justice took Howell deep for a walk-off homer to win the game for the Red Sox.

Lefty Grove and Doc White locked horns in the second game between Indianapolis and San Francisco, which was scoreless through 6. Indianapolis scored 4 times in the top of the 7th, keyed by a 2-run double by Jake Stenzel, and held on as Lefty James retired Pedro Guerrero with the bases loaded to preserve a 4-3 victory for the ABC's.

{A little out of order this time around.}

For the first series after the all-star break, we visit to the Big Apple, where the New York Black Yankees are hosting the Cleveland Spiders.

This is the third featured series for the Black Yankees, who we looked at in Series XI and Series XV. It's the second focus for the Spiders, who were in Series VII.

This is a pretty crucial series, as the Spiders trail the Black Yankees in the Effa Manley Division by only 1 1/2 games.

#Cleveland Spiders

The Spiders brought in Ron Reed and Lance Berkman, hoping that the infusion of bullpen talent and power on the bench is enough to catch the division leaders. If that's going to work out, it will require the Spiders' pitching staff to continue it's excellent job, led by Cy Young, Pat Malone, and Bill Steen.

Offensively, Cleveland is all about MVP candidate Ron Blomberg and the trio of Louis Santop, John Ellis, and Jake Stahl, who divide the C and 1B duties between them. If they continue to produce, the Spiders have a chance.

#New York Black Yankees

The Spiders' job is going to be harder, given that the Black Yankees improved as well, with all-star Tom Herr being brought in to solve their 2B challenge, Gary Lavelle being added to the bullpen, and Jamie Moyer taking over the final rotation spot (Herr came over from Birmingham, Lavelle and Moyer from Ottawa).

Herr addresses the one weak spot in a dominant lineup, while Lavelle may take over as the closer if Sparky Lyle's struggles continue.

I want to see Cleveland emerge in 1st place in the division, as that would setup the best rest of the season. But my guess is it's an even split, and the Black Yankees maintain their lead.

#Game One: Whit Wyatt @ Waite Hoyt

The Black Yankees took the lead in the bottom of the first on a three run HR from Mickey Mantle, followed immediately by a solo shot from Eric Davis. The Spiders got one back in the third on a bases loaded groundout from Johnny Bates, but Waite Hoyt induced a double play ball from Chuck Knoblauch, keeping the score 4-1 in favor of New York.

Solo shots from Thurman Munson in the 4th and Davis in the 5th chased Whit Wyatt from the game, with the Black Yankees now up 6-1.

The Spiders put a few runners on base, especially after a rain delay led to Hoyt leaving the game, but nobody else scored.

Davis is now tied with Babe Ruth for the WBL league in homeruns with 24.

#Game Two: Cy Young @ Ron Guidry

Ron Guidry gave up back-to-back hits to Peanuts Lowery and Jake Stahl to start the game, but a double play and a weak flyball to right got him out of the inning without a score.

Stahl would open the scoring in the top of the fourth with his 14th homerun of the year. The Spiders would add 2 more in the fifth, on a double by Louis Santop, a triple from Jim Gantner, and a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Cy Young, meanwhile, had a 2-hit shutout through 5 innings.

The shutout lasted until the bottom of the 9th, when Don Mattingly led off with a pinch-hit homerun. That brought in Terry Adams, who fanned Derek Jeter and Eric Davis before getting Babe Ruth to groundout weakly to 2B to end the game.

#Game 3: Pat Malone @ Red Ruffing

Cleveland sends Pat Malone to the mound as they try to get ahead in the series against New York's all-star, Red Ruffing.

The Spiders would strike first, with Ron Blomberg hitting his 20th homerun of the year with a runner on for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. In the bottom of the second, Albert Belle would cut the lead in half with a solo shot, and Babe Ruth would send the Black Yankees in front 3-2 with a a long homerun in the bottom of the third inning.

Ruffing and Malone would trade blanks after that until Goose Gossage took the mound for New York in the top of the 7th. The big righthander continued to struggle: Bill Dahlen walked and stole second, Kenny Lofton singled him to third, and then Chuck Knoblauch sent an 0-1 pitch into the seats for a 5-3 Cleveland lead.

That was it for Gossage, who was replaced by Cole Hamels, who gave up a pinch-hit 2 run shot to Evan Longoria, increasing the lead to 7-3.

Meanwhile, Malone was masterful, allowing only 4 hits over a complete game, 108 pitch performance, putting the Spiders in position to overtake New York in the division if they can win the final game.

Thurman Munson's wild 43 game streak of getting base ended in this contest.

#Game 4: Bill Steen @ Jamie Moyer

If Bill Steen can pull a win out for Cleveland, they will take over first place from the Black Yankees, who will counter with recently acquired Jamie Moyer's first start for the club.

Moyer would struggle early, with Cleveland loading the bases twice in the first three innings. But the Spiders were unable to push a run across the plate in either frame. They did score first when John Ellis took Moyer deep in the top of the 5th with a runner on base. Peanuts Lowery added an RBI single, and the Spiders took the lead, 3-0.

Steen was sailing along until the bottom of the 5th, when Mike Schmidt led off with a walk and Tom Herr--who had struggled a bit in his first few days for the Black Yankees--ripped a double to right, putting New York on the board. Herr scored on a single by Derek Jeter. Singles by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig chased Steen from the game in favor of Mel Harder. Harder was greeted by an RBI single by Mickey Mantle, and we exited the 5th inning tied at 3.

It's not clear which is more surprising, that Cole Hamels would strike out the side in the top of the 6th or that Thurman Munson, after being hit by a pitch, would steal second base. He would score on a double from Jeter, putting the Black Yankees up, 4-3.

Hamels finished with 7 strikeouts in 3 innings before giving way to Ralph Citarella with a runner on first and 2 outs. Citarella--the most dependable arm in New York's beleaguered bullpen--hit Chuck Knoblauch and gave up a long shot into the left field stands by Ron Blomberg. That made it 6-4, and an RBI double from Ellis made it 7-4.

Cory Gearrin struggled in the bottom of the frame, giving up 3 hits, but retiring Jeter with 2 runners on to close the frame and preserve the lead.

That left Cleveland's closer, Terry Adams, to close out the victory ... if he could get through Don Mattingly, Ruth, and Gehrig. Mattingly led off with a hit, and Ruth got on with an infield squib. Gehrig followed with a double, putting runners on second and third and closing the gap to 7-5. Another infield hit, this one by Mantle, scored the runner from third, but Adams whiffed Albert Belle for the first out. Munson would send a ball deep into the night, but it would stay in the ballpark. Still, it was more than enough to score Gehrig from third.

And Herr would win the game with another infield dribbler. This one hurts the Spiders, who had a solid chance to move into first place and, instead, leave New York in the same position they were when they arrived.

Mantle had 4 hits and Herr 3 for New York while both Blomberg and Ellis drove in 3 for Cleveland.

Reggie Jackson of the San Francisco Sea Lions is oh-so-slowly being drawn back to the pack. He still leads the WBL in BA (by 11 points over Cleveland's Ron Blomberg) and in OBP (by 26 points over Homestead's Mike Epstein), but the New York Black Yankees' Babe Ruth has retaken the lead in SLG. Ruth has actually struggled recently, seeing his BA drop all the way down to .303, but over half his hits are for extra bases.

Looking at the leaderboards, a few things of note:

• Ruth remains the only player in the top 2 in more than a few categories.
• Ottawa's Tim Raines has taken over the SB lead, ahead of San Francisco's Rickey Henderson.

Best Starting Pitchers

It's going to be interesting seeing how this develops. There is no real front-runner for the best pitcher in the league. Cleveland's Cy Young shows up in the most categories, and when you consider how much of a workhorse he is, perhaps that puts him in front. But Los Angeles' Gerrit Cole is the only hurler in double-digits in wins, and Baltimore's Dennis Martínez is the only one with an ERA under 3.00.

Detroit loses a key contributor to their bullpen, as Matt Anderson will miss about a month. Doyle Alexander was recalled from AAA.

#Los Angeles Angels

The Angels are hoping some small tweaks bring big impacts: Carlos Delgado joins, initially in a platoon at 1B with Derrek Lee, and Wally Moon adds some OF flexibility. Kole Calhoun was also recalled to the WBL.

Kal Daniels drove in 5 runs to lead the Angels in a 16-2 route of Memphis, a game that got so out of hand the Red Sox sent Ted Williams to the mound. Daniels and Doug Radar had 2 hits each and Elmer Valo scored 3 times to support 6 strong innings from Chuck Finley.

Memphis actually has a pretty complicated roster situation, as they have more than 40 players who need to be on the secondary roster. As such, some more small trades may emerge.

While that works out, Stubby Overmire joins their rotation and Sammy Sosa hops into the OF mix.

Don Sutton stays with the WBL club, with Mat Latos heading to AAA.

Newcomer Fred Lynn joins the big league club, and will see some time at RF and DH.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Despite a stellar showing, Bob Welch is sent to AA A to clear room on the roster for the arrival of Joe Beggs. Manny Machado steps into the starting lineup at 3B, sending Brooks Robinson back to AAA.

#Chicago American Giants

The pitching staff was overhauled in a big way, with Frank Smith, Ken Sanders, and Joe Horlen heading to AAA to clear room for newcomers Don Newcombe, Dick Rudolph, Clay Condrey, and Hoyt Wilhelm, with Newcombe and Rudolph joining the rotation. Freddy Parent steps right into the SS role, sending Luis Aparicio to AAA and clearing space on the roster for José Abreu, who looks to see a fair bit of time at 1B against lefties.

The new guys were good in their first game: Parent hit a homerun and Wilhelm was effective in relief. But it was the old guard who won the game, with Frank Thomas hitting a homerun and Dick Allen getting 3 hits in a 7-2 victory over Brooklyn to start the second half for the American Giants. After the game, Tom Brookens was promoted to Chicago as Jack Doyle was placed on the DL.

#Houston Colt 45's

Everyone can play everywhere ... which isn't as big a deal as you might think. But, 17 year old Pete Hill, Paul Goldschmidt, and Lance Blankenship all move to Houston to fill out the roster. Roger Clemens slides directly into the rotation with Brad Lidge heading to AAA.

Hill hit a go-ahead homerun in his first start, helping Houston to a 4-3 win over Ottawa. Trevor Hoffman moved to 5-0, and Billy Wagner picked up his 5th save of the year.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Steve Evans and Frankie Frisch join the big league club. The pitching situation is a bit more interesting: Bob Gibson remains at AAA due to the arrival of Smokey Joe Wood and the return of Andy Pettitte from the DL.

#Ottawa Mounties

The Mounties have essentially tossed in the towel, looking to sort through some of their young talent with an eye towards next year. This means a return to the rotation for Johnny Podgajny, a return to Ottawa for Randy Johnson, and a debut for RP Bobby Castillo.

A similar bunch of changes offensively: Jim Stephens takes over for Emil Gross as the backup catcher, Rusty Staub moves into a platoon at 1B, Álex Rodríguez gets another shot as the full time SS, and Carlos Beltrán tries to solve the ongoing woes at CF for Ottawa.

Roberto Alomar had 4 hits and 5 RBIs and Rodriguez scored 4 times with 3 hits and 3 RBIs leading the Mounties in a 14-5 rout of Houston in the first game of a doubleheader. Rodriguez and Roy Sievers went deep and Clayton Richard put in a strong 7 innings for his second win.

#Cleveland Spiders

The Spiders' two main acquisitions at the break should both see quite a bit of action, Ron Reed out of the bullpen and Lance Berkman at 1B, LF, and DH. Whether Berkman can shake the offensive slump that plagued him in Houston is another question altogether.

#Homestead Grays

Bill Mazeroski moves up to the WBL to provide depth at second base.

Four Grays--Roberto Clemente, Josh Gibson, Arky Vaughan, and Chief Wilson--drove in 3 runs each with Wilson and Andy Van Slyke rapping out 3 hits apiece in a 17-6 drubbing of Miami.

#New York Black Yankees

After refusing a demotion to AAA, SP Jack Chesbro was released. Newcomer Jamie Moyer moves into the starting rotation, and Gary Lavelle heads to the back of the bullpen with Dellin Betances heading to the minors. Sparky Lyle retains his closing role, but that may be in jeopardy rather quickly in the second half of the season.

With Tom Herr's arrival, Willie Randolph is the odd man out, heading back to AAA, and--somehow--preserving Craig Counsell's role on the team. Veteran OF Joe Harris comes up as a reserve OF.

#Philadelphia Stars

Claude Jonnard comes up to Philadelphia to replace Ron Reed's very large shoes, and Cecil Cooper is brought up to add another bat from the bench.

Willie Davis went 0-for-4, ending his 17-game hitting streak as the Stars lost their first game of the second half, 7-3 to Birmingham.

Ray Collins and Rheal Cormier combined on a 5-hit shutout of Birmingham. José Ramírez and Davis went deep in the 7-0 Stars' victory.

Scott Rolen capped a come-from-behind victory with a 2-run walk-off homerun as the Stars took the third game of the series with Birmingham, 9-7. Rico Carty had 4 hits including 3 doubles, and Rolen drove in 3.

Looking to break out of a brutal slump, Chase Utley delivered a walk-off single to win the final game of the series with Birmingham. Buck Freeman and George Hendrick had 2 hits each, and perhaps more importantly, John Montgomery Ward threw a strong 7 innings, although he didn't figure in the decision, with the win going to Bill Laskey.

#Birmingham Black Barons

With all of the trades, the Black Barons brought Warren Spahn back to the big leagues and promoted both Kent Mercker and Bruce Chen. Changes in the field include a platoon at first between Frank McCormick and newcomer Adrián González and at third between Eddie Mathews and Pie Traynor. Herman Long and Ginger Beaumont were both promoted as well.

Bob Nieman and Del Crandall had 3 hits each and Hank Aaron drove in 3 runs as the Black Barons started the 2nd half with a 7-3 victory over Philadelphia.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Darren Dreifort joins the Royal Giants' bullpen and newcomer Frank Isbell steps right into the lineup.

With Ray Dandridge missing a couple weeks, the Royal Giants recalled SS Germany Smith from AAA.

#Miami Cuban Giants

José Méndez and Eustaquio Pedroso join the rotation, with Sandy Consuegra, Bill Landrum, and Phenomenal Smith all getting promotions to the big leagues. Alan Ashby took over a the fulltime catcher, with newly acquired Chris Hoiles his backup and Charlie Bennett moving to AAA.

Alexei Ramírez was sent to AAA as was José Tartabull (whose WBL stay lasted exactly one game) as both Alejandro Oms and Martín Dihigo were activated from the DL.

José Cardenal went deep twice and Ashby drilled a go-ahead 3-run homerun to lead the Cuban Giants to a come from behind, 8-6 victory over the Grays.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Frank Williams and Pascual Pérez move up to Portland's bullpen. Rogers Hornsby's arrival means Fred Dunlap goes down to AAA, as Greg Litton's flexibility continues to keep him around.

Wade Miller improved to 6-0 by carrying a no-hitter through 6 innings en route to a 7-2 victory over the New York Gothams. Buddy Bell had 3 hits and he and Harry Hooper drove in 2 runs each for the Sea Dogs.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Lots of churn here. Huston Street and Eddie Joost were waived, although the Sea Lions hope to retain them. With a lot of moving parts, the Sea Lions are taking a risk by going with only one shortstop--Miguel Cairo--until Dick Lundy comes of the DL. Ron Hunt and Sal Bando are called up in the interim.

Two homeruns by Pedro Guerrero and a stellar start by Charlie Root weren't enough as Indianapolis came back to beat San Francisco 4-3 in 10 innings. Chad Bradford balked in the winning run after Rod Beck suffered his third blown save of the season.

For Series XX, we'll see the Chicago American Giants (featured in Series VI) visit the New York Gothams (Series II and Series XIV).

#Chicago American Giants

Chicago comes into Series XX 10 games over .500, but 4 games behind Baltimore, who lead the Cum Posey Division. The story for the American Giants remains the same: one of the best and deepest offenses in the league trying to carry a thoroughly mediocre pitching staff.

New additions Hoyt Wilhelm and Don Newcombe are trying to help with the latter, while Freddy Parent was brought in to address the one weakness--SS--in the starting lineup. Their best two starters--Ben Sheets and Tricky Nichols--will see action in the series, so Chicago needs to capitalize to hold pace with the Black Sox.

Chicago has juggled much of its bench, and early returns are not encouraging: the quartet of Jackie Hayes, José Abreu, Magglio Ordóñez, and Tom Brookens needs to do more to hold onto their roster spots, although none of them have more than 38 PA's (Ordóñez).

#New York Gothams

The Gothams continue to cling to a slim lead--one game--over Detroit in the Bill James Division. They're doing it with offense and their bullpen: like Chicago, the starters have been sufficient, but little more than that.

Willie Mays and Buster Posey continue to lead the way for the Gothams, and Wes Westrum has yet to cool off, slashing an impressive 327/410/654 and earning some more regular playing time in the process. The Gothams largely stood pat at the break, adding Don Sutton to their staff, initially in a long relief role, but clearly Sutton is on hand should one of the current starters falter.

#Game One: Don Newcombe @ Christy Mathewson

Chicago's recent acquisition, Don Newcombe, makes his first start for the American Giants. He'll be facing Christy Mathewson, moving up a day to take the first game of the series for the New York Gothams.

A long homerun in the top of the 2nd by Dick Allen put Chicago up, 1-0.

And that was it for a while. Mathewson struggled with his control, walking 4 through 4 innings, but only giving up the homerun to Allen. Cristóbal Torriente led off the 5th with a single, but was stranded there as, reaching back for a little extra, Mathewson whiffed Duffy Lewis with his final pitch.

Newcombe, on the other hand, was giving up a hit per inning, but nothing else. Willie Mays led off the bottom of the 7th with a double and moved to 3rd on an infield hit by Johnny Callison. Mays would score to tie the game on a sacrifice fly from Willie McCovey.

The Gothams would take their first lead in the bottom of the 8th when Buster Posey singled home Jimmy Sheckard. Mike Norris gave up a 2-out single to Eddie Collins, but struck out Joe Jackson to end the game, earning his 2nd save in the process as the Gothams took the first of the four game series.

#Game 2: Ben Sheets @ Sad Sam Jones

Duffy Lewis opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single , but despite 2 hits and 2 walks, that was all Chicago could manage off of Sad Sam Jones in the frame.

Yasiel Puig doubled off Ben Sheets in the bottom of the 2nd, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by Wes Westrum to tie the game. Sheets would walk Pinky Higgins and give up a single to Brandon Crawford to load the bases, but a double play ball from Cookie Rojas left the game tied at 1.

Chicago would take the lead back in the top of the 4th on an RBI single by Freddy Parent. In the next inning, Dick Allen would triple in 2 more runs, extending the lead to 4-1. Allen would score on a single by Mike Fiore, chasing Jones and bringing in Don Sutton for the Gothams.

Johnny Callison made it 5-3 in the bottom of the 8th with a 2-run homerun off Herb Pennock.

Chicago would add a run in the top of the 9th, and their closer, AJ Minter, would work around an error to close it out in the bottom of the frame.

#Game 3: Tricky Nichols @ Pete Donohue

Pete Donohue got himself into a bases loaded jam in the top of the 2nd, and got Dave Nilsson to hit a groundball. But New York only got one out, and a run crossed the plate for an early 1-0 lead for Chicago. They would double it in the 4th, taking advantage of a Carl Furillo error and a Magglio Ordóñez double to make it 2-0.

Meanwhile, Tricky Nichols was sailing along with a 3-hit shutout through five innings.

Donohue, who had only allowed 2 hits to that point, took a line drive off the leg in the top of the 5th and had to leave the game, replaced by Mike Norris.

The wheels came off for Nichols in the bottom of the 6th, when the home crowd's fan favorite, Wes Westrum, took him deep with 2 men on, giving the Gothams a 3-2 lead.

Nichols was chased from the game by hits from John Kerins and Cookie Rojas in the bottom of the 7th, bringing Hoyt Wilhelm in from the bullpen to face the pinch-hitting Willie Mays. Mays singled, bringing in a run and extending the lead to 4-2, but Wilhelm got out of the inning without further damage.

The American Giants made a stand in the top of the 8th, first with an RBI single from Frank Thomas, and back-to-back doubles from Dick Allen and Mike Fiore and a pinch-hit single from Duffy Lewis that gave Chicago the lead again, 7-4.

Akinori Otsuka and AJ Minter would close out the game for Chicago with 2 perfect innings of relief.

#Game 4: Mark Buehrle @ Juan Marichal

Up 2 games to 1, Chicago opened game 4 of the series with a double from Eddie Collins, who scored on a single from Joe Jackson. Jackson would score on a single by Dick Allen, and Duffy Lewis would come home on a soft single from Cristóbal Torriente. Allen would score on a wild pitch as Chicago tagged Juan Marichal for 4 runs in the top of the first.

The Gothams would get one back in the bottom of the 2nd, when a Mark Buehrle wild pitch allowed Yasiel Puig to score.

Marichal would give up 2 more runs, giving Chicago the 6-1 lead heading to the bottom of the 5th. New York closed to 6-2 in the bottom of the frame, but Buehrle escaped a bases-loaded jam to maintain a 4-run cushion.

A 2-run homerun from Jackson extended Chicago's lead to 8-3 in the top of the 7th.

The Gothams' most pleasant surprise of the year has been Wes Westrum, who continues to just mash the ball. Westrum doubled in 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th, closing the score to 8-5.

Chicago would add one more run on a double play in the top of the 9th for the final tally.

These are two excellent teams, each leaving this series in 2nd place in their divisions. But the edge shown by Chicago does reflect a true difference in the two, and the 3-1 series result is well deserved.

Dick Allen, Joe Jackson, and Eddie Collins each had 5 hits for the American Giants and Cristóbal Torriente went 7-for-16 to lead their offense. For the Gothams, Buster Posey went 6-for-15, Cookie Rojas added 5 hits, and Wes Westrum had 4 in 3 games.

The New York Black Yankees opened their series in Indianapolis with Jack Scott taking the mound while the ABC's countered with David Price.

Indianapolis took the lead in the bottom of the first, with doubles from Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, and Jake Stenzel (one run scored on Stenzel's double, the other on a double-play ball from Oscar Charleston).

The 2-0 lead lasted until the top of the 3rd when Babe Ruth launched his 26th homerun of the year, and Mike Schmidt followed with a moon shot of his own. Both homers were 2-run jobs, moving New York ahead, 4-2.

Danny Hoffman scored on an unlikely event--a Hal Morris triple--in the bottom of the 4th, closing the game to 4-3.

Both starting pitchers left after 5 innings, but Schmidt greeted Price's replacement, Clay Carroll, with his 2nd homerun of the day (an inside-the-park job at that!), re-establishing a 2-run lead for the Black Yankees.

Scott would likely have stayed in the game, but rain began to fall, delaying the bottom of the 5th nearly 90 minutes. This is an issue for New York, as their bullpen has struggled all year. Goose Gossage replaced Scott, giving up a homerun to Joey Votto (the first of his career) in the bottom of the 7th. Gary Lavelle--brought in specifically to help their bullpen--relieved Gossage and immediately got into trouble, walking 2 and giving up a single to Charleston to load the bases. Bench singled, driving in 2, giving Indianapolis their first lead and chasing Lavelle.

Willie Mitchell--stellar so far this season--shut down the Black Yankees while Ralph Citarella didn't do much better than Gossage and Lavelle, giving up a 2-RBI double to Edd Roush in the bottom of the 8th to push the score to 8-5.

Rob Dibble closed it out, making the game really a battle of the bullpens: New York's gave up 5 runs in 3 innings while Indianapolis' only 1 run on 2 hits in 4.

In the second game of the series between Portland and Baltimore, the Sea Dogs scored 5 runs in the last 2 innings to grab a come-from-behind 7-4 victory. Kent Hrbek hit 2 homeruns, giving him 25 for the season (2nd in the league), and Bobby Murcer hit a 3-run pinch-hit HR in the 9th to fuel the comeback. Baltimore's Baby Doll Jacobson is slowly adjusting to WBL pitching after dominated AAA, homering twice and driving in 4 in the game in the losing effort.

Gary Peters, recalled from AAA earlier in the day, gave Ottawa 5 shutout innings in their series finale with Detroit, leaving with the Mounties up 5-0 thanks to 3 homeruns in the 3rd inning (Carlos Beltrán, Larry Walker, and Anthony Rendon). It didn't last, as Detroit scored 4 times in the 7th and twice in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings tied at 6. In the top of the 11th, George Van Haltren (0-15 at that point), hit a game-winning homerun, and two starters--the much maligned Randy Johnson and the surprisingly effective Jim Clancy--closed it out in the bottom of the frame. Detroit's Chili Davis tied a league record with 5 hits.

League Norms

Now that we're past the All-Star Break, it seems a good time to take a look at the overall context of the WBL. Given that the model year was 2000, things are tracking pretty well.

Offense

It's a year that favors the offense, for sure. As a whole, the league is slashing 264/336/429. The 765 OPS would make it a top 10 offensive year for MLB, driven almost entirely by the .429 SLG, which would be the 6th highest in MLB history. Teams are hitting 1.16 HR/G, a total that would rank 6th as well.

There are some fun anomalies that come with an all-star league: teams are averaging roughly 1 SB/G, not an outlandish number, but one that is in the top third or so of seasons overall. But also, under .20 3B/G, easily in the bottom third of historical seasons.

Pitching

The pitching story is pretty much the inverse: the 4.56 league ERA would rank 8th highest in MLB history. Clearly all those homeruns aren't helping, but there's more here. The 1.42 league WHIP is actually decent--not 1968 by any means, but not too bad. So what is causing the high ERA? One issue might be strikeouts: the 6.08 K/G is clearly a modern number but it's lagging a bit for sure.

Batters

The length of the list is a testament to how widespread the offensive depth is in the league. San Francisco's Reggie Jackson--still leading in 2 of the triple crown categories--and Babe Ruth of the New York Black Yankees are the only batters leading the league in multiple categories. Four batters (Jackson, Ron Blomberg, Ruth, and Kent Hrbek) have OPS' over 1.000.

Blomberg, often on the edges of this list, forced himself on with a 1.434 OPS since the All-Star Break.

Gene Conley's debut as a member of the rotation went as well as could be hoped: nearly 8 strong innings allowing only 1 run in a 7-1 victory over Ottawa. Seldom used 1B Greg Brock had easily his best game of the season, scoring 3 times, driving in 2, and hitting his first homerun of the year as Conley moved to 8-0 on the season.

#Los Angeles Angels

Derrek Lee hit a walk-off grand slam, leading the Angels to a 9-5 win over Brooklyn. Mike Trout hammered out 5 hits in 5 at-bats, driving in 2 and scoring 2.

Len Barker returns from the DL with Derek Lowe heading back to AAA.

#Wandering House of David

Anthony Rizzo and Fred Lynn hit the first homeruns of their WBL careers, leading the House of David over Philadelphia, 7-4. Dick Tidrow, Lee Smith, and Bruce Sutter combined for 4 innings of hitless relief to seal the victory, which went to Frank Sullivan, who is now 5-6 on the season.

Elrod Hendricks and George Stone hit two homeruns each, leading the House of David to a come-from-behind, 7-6 win over the Stars. Bob Rush got the win and Sutter picked up his 9th save of the season.

Ken Singleton and Larry Gardner each had 3 hits and each hit a homerun, helping Ned Garvin improve to 7-2 with a 9-2 drubbing of Portland.

#Houston Colt 45's

Leon Day hit the DL, with Scott Erickson recalled from AAA San Antonio to make a WBL start. Day--who has been quite impressive for a teenager--is done for the season, needing 5 to 6 months to recover from elbow surgery to remove bone chips.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Supported by 3 hits and 2 RBIs from Stan Musial, Connie Johnson, Smokey Joe Wood, and Jeff Pfeffer combined on a 5-hit shutout of Miami. Ducky Medwick also drove in 2 and Lou Brock and Robinson Canó had 2 hits each in the 7-0 victory.

Needing a starter, the Mounties sent Monk Dubiel down to AAA, with Gary Peters coming back up to the WBL.

Red Ruffing became the league's second starting pitcher to hit double digits, picking up his 10th victory with a 3-2 win over Indianapolis.

Sherm Lollar had 4 hits and scored 3 times and Rico Carty and Ted Kluszewski had 3 hits each to lead the Stars to an 8-5 win over the House of David. Lollar and Kluszewski each went deep in support of Steve Carlton, who improved to 4-6 with over 5 strong innings. Bob Howry picked up his 17th save of the season.
