Bout 196 - Vitali Klitschko versus Jerry Quarry
Round 11 Commentary
Round 11 gets underway as the fighters move to the middle of the ring. Quarry pins Klitschko in the corner! Quarry scores with a tremendous left! Klitschko looks like he might have been hurt by that punch! Quarry works his way in and leans on Klitschko... Referee Florian has to separate the two ... Both fighters are probing, looking for an opening. You could feel the breeze after that miss by Quarry! Klitschko lands a stinging jab. Klitschko last connect snapped back the head of Quarry. And it looks like it has reopened Quarry's cut. Now the bleeding from the gash outside Quarry's right eye has begun to flow again. Blood is now gushing from the cut over Quarry's eye! And it looks like . . . yes . . . Referee Florian is notifying the timekeeper to stop the clock. He wants the doctor at ringside to take a look at Quarry's facial wound. Ref Florian is halting this fight. This one is over! Quarry is unable to continue due to the severity of the cut over his eye. Klitschko gets the TKO victory here in Round 11! Round 11 Commentary
It's Round 11 of this scheduled 12 rounder. Klitschko's corner men does a nice job on Klitschko's cut on the left eyelid. Patterson's corner men worked their magic on his cut on the bridge of his nose. There's no bleeding at all under the Vaseline smear. Patterson lands a vicious cross! Klitschko's knee almost touched the canvas ... Klitschko just misses with a huge shot as Patterson chooses the perfect time to suddenly backpedal. Patterson lands a brutal cross! Patterson catches Klitschko coming in with a sweet uppercut! How is Klitschko still standing? Patterson connects with a vicious cross! That blast sent Klitschko reeling into the ropes! Patterson scores with a tremendous left! Klitschko is going to have to reach deep here or Referee Milham is going to have no choice but to stop this fight. Klitschko smothers Patterson's attack as Patterson tries to get off some shots inside. Floyd Patterson throws a big looping cross that lands high on the head of Klitschko. Patterson drives home a wicked hook to the midsection! Klitschko was stunned by that last flurry of punches! Patterson connects with a thundering uppercut and Klitschko drops to the canvas! He is concerned about the severity of the swelling under Klitschko's left eye and is consulting the ringside physician. The doctor is examining the swelling around the left eye of Klitschko closely. Bout 198 - Lennox Lewis versus Greg Page
Round 12 Commentary
The bell sounds for the last round of the bout in a very close fight! Lewis's cutman worked his magic on Lewis's swelling. Knowledgeable work on reducing it has the puffiness under control. A minute wasn't enough to eliminate or even significantly reduce Page's swelling. Page tries to go to the body but he can't find an opening. Lewis lets his hands go but his punches land on the arms of Page. Page lands a jab. He's using it as both an offensive and defensive weapon on occasions. Lewis fires a shot, but it glances off Page's shoulder. Wow! That shot landed like a lightning bolt! Lennox Lewis is down on his back! Referee Roman stands over Lewis and begins the count ... Lewis lurches to his feet at the count of 4 but he stumbles and is down on his knees again. He's making another effort! At 7, Lewis appears to be ok as he regains his feet as the referee gives him the mandatory standing 8 count. Ref Roman signals for the fight to go on. Page just misses with a huge shot as Lewis chooses the perfect time to suddenly backpedal. Lewis smothers Page's attack as Page tries to get off some shots inside. The cross scores for Page. He needs to throw that punch more often. Page seems to have shaken off the effects of last round's knockdown. Page is staying at the center of the ring ... He lands a solid cross! Lewis is clinching ... Roman separates them. Page appears to have won this round & that could mean he won this fight That's the bell ending the fight and leaving the outcome in the hands of the judges in a very close fight ... Round 10 Commentary
Viruet motions the fighters together as the bell sounds to begin Round 10. Eddie Futch knows Norton lost that last round, but he took the positive approach between rounds. Oh mercy! Liston pummels Norton, capping off his assault with a stiff uppercut! Norton was staggered by those punches! Liston fires away but finds nothing but air. Norton connects with a solid hook! Liston works his way in and leans on Norton. Liston buries a punch into Norton's ribs. Liston landed a sharp combination that rocked Norton back on his heels! Norton is trying to regroup after those punches … A big uppercut from Liston lands with serious impact! Norton was rattled by that shot and he is hurt! Liston has Norton trapped in the left neutral corner... And Norton goes down!! He walked right into a wicked combination from Liston!! Referee Viruet starts counting ... Norton tries to clear his head as Viruet reaches the count of 7. At 9, Norton finds his legs and stands up but who knows how long he will be able to remain vertical! Round 9 Commentary
Round 9 begins as the bell sounds. The swelling on the face of Norris is almost as pronounced as before his corner worked on it. Oh My! That was a violent straight right by Louis! You can see some increased swelling around the right eye of Orlin Norris. Goodness, what a shot!!! Joe Louis is known for his tremendous power and that cross to the head was proof. Norris appears to be stunned! Norris's right eye is becoming a cause of major concern as it continues swell. Louis has Norris cornered! Louis doubled up on the hook. Did you see the water fly off Norris's head? Louis has Orlin Norris in trouble after those hooks! Norris somehow responds with a vicious cross right down the pipe and catches Louis flush! That's the punch Orlin Norris hoped to land! Now Joe Louis drops the right hand flush on Norris's chin! Louis drops his shoulder as if to throw a right, then quickly rips a quick left hook to the body. Norris is trying to regroup ... Oh! Louis just landed a big hook flush! We go to the last round, as the bell sounds to start the 12th. A minute wasn't enough to eliminate or even significantly reduce Michael Moorer's swelling. Moorer glances a hook off Lyle's side. Both fighters are looking to bang inside, as Lyle lands an uppercut to the jaw. Lyle takes a punishing over hand left to the jaw! A big uppercut from Moorer lands with serious impact! Lyle fires a light jab to the stomach. Moorer fires a shot, but it glances off Lyle's shoulder. Look out! That was a straight right by Lyle! That blast sent Moorer reeling into the ropes! OH! Moorer landed the big hook flush! Lyle appears to be stunned! This fight is history and it may be too little, too late for Moorer even though he seems to have won this round! Round 10 Commentary
As the bell sounds to begin the Round 10, we will have to see if that knockdown last round has any carryover effect on Moore. Moore traps Marciano in the corner! Marciano eats a jab from Moore. Marciano connects with a thundering hook and Moore drops to the canvas! The count starts ... At 9, Moore still looks shaky after getting up from the knockdown and Burke is taking a long look at him. The fight will go on as Burke deems Archie "The Old Mongoose" Moore is fit to conitnue. There's plenty of time for Rocky Marciano to finish Moore if he can do it. Moore takes a hard-cross right on the button and he’s down again! Referee Burke moves into position over Moore and begins the count … At 5, Moore is back up as Burke counts off the mandatory 8. Burke looks closely at Moore who indicates he is ok, and the fight will continue ... Moore moves into a neutral corner. Circling left, Marciano looks for an opening to fire a shot at Moore. That was a violent straight right by Marciano! Having met the canvas in each of the last two rounds Moore is in big trouble! Marciano is bobbing and weaving as he moves forward. Wow! That shot landed like a lightning bolt! Moore is down on his back! That’s it, it's over!! Moore is knocked down for the third time in the round, giving Marciano the win by TKO!! Mathis misses with the left and then fails to connect with the right as well. Each fighter now seems content on clinching ... Mathis scores with a two-punch combination to the midsection. Round 12 Commentary
Both fighters look determined as the final round gets underway. The swelling on the face of Mercer is almost as pronounced as before his corner worked on it. Jimmy Young is forced into his opponents’ corner... Both fighters are circling, keeping their distance from each other. Mercer pins Young in the corner! Mercer misses. He had an opening and whiffed with the punch. Young slips in a jab to the body. Mercer clinches nicely... but clinching doesn't score points. Referee Jen-Kin cautions Young for striking with his shoulder. And now Jen-Kin has taken a point away from Young! Young walks into a glancing hook from Mercer. Young ties up Mercer. Why would he want to clinch now? Mercer works his way free! Man, is someone going to fight? They clinch again! That's a pretty long clinch! Do these guys want to hug or fight? Bonavena didn't sit in the corner between rounds and he comes out quickly to begin Round 9. Charley Goldman felt Bonavena lost that last round and he let him know that in no uncertain terms during the break! If the swelling was lessened by Berbick's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference. Trevor Berbick has Bonavena trapped! Berbick flicks three quick jabs and at least one got through. Berbick lands a hook to the ribs. Trevor Berbick scores with a quick one-two to Bonavena's midsection. Berbick's jab is a real weapon as yet another one hits the mark. Berbick gets the cross through Bonavena's guard. Bonavena works his way in and leans on Berbick ... Referee Roman steps in and admonishes Bonavena for leaning on Berbick's neck. Bonavena takes a wild karate chop at Berbick’s neck on the break! Roman is deducting a point from Bonavena who was already losing the round! Bonavena attempts to go to the body, but can't connect. Trevor Berbick lands a hard cross, one of the better punches so far this round. Bonavena traps Berbick's gloves under his arms, forcing Roman to break them up. There are 3:00 more minutes of fighting to go in the 12th and final round. If the swelling was lessened by Biggs's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference. Bobick drives home a wicked hook to the midsection! Bobick really buried that punch into Biggs's ribs. Oh!!! Bobick unleashed a crippling right hand to the head! Biggs cranks up the hook and connects to Bobick's jaw, that one had bad intent behind it! Bobick looks somewhat plodding as he tries to chase down Biggs. Biggs looks to have his legs back under him after that knockdown in the last round. Biggs just landed a three-punch combo! Bobick does a great job with subtle movement to avoid Biggs's punches in close. Bobick lands a smashing hook! Tyrell Biggs is clutching his side! The bell sounds for the last round of the bout. Bivins's corner men worked their magic on his cut on the bridge of nose. Young and Bivins each take a step back. Bivins misses. He had an opening and whiffed with the punch. Jimmy Bivins leaves the jab just short. Young fakes downstairs, then lands an uppercut under Bivins's chin. That punch snapped back the head of Bivins. And it looks like it has reopened Bivins's cut. The flow of blood from Bivins's nose has started again. There's a sudden halt in the action and we're not sure why. Oh, apparently there's some concern on the part of Referee Jen-Kin about the amount of blood on the face of Bivins. The ringside doctor is dabbing at the blood, trying to determine the severity of the wound. He's saying something to the referee and from the reaction of Bivins, it must be positive. Yep, this fight's going to continue as both fighters receive instructions to resume the mayhem here in round 12. Bivins shoots a vicious cross right down the pipe and catches Young flush! Bivins connects with an uppercut to the head of Young. Young's corner is shouting at him to stay away as they must think he has a decent lead in this fight. Young wraps up Bivins. Jen-Kin steps in and breaks it up. Bivins is getting frustrated as Young continues to hold on to him. Bivins is punching Young's head, trying to break his hold. Finally, Jen-Kin pushes the fighters apart. Young seems to have done enough to win this fight. That's it. This fight has gone the distance and now we'll await the official decision ... The swelling on the face of Bugner is noticeable, even at a distance. Bugner connects with a solid uppercut! Both of these fighters seem to be really laboring now ... Williams takes a heavy uppercut downstairs. Carl Williams is favoring his ribs, he's hurt!! Bugner snakes the jab through Williams's gloves. He had some snap on that one. Carl Williams swings ... and misses. That hook by Bugner jarred Williams! That blast sent Williams reeling into the ropes! Bugner circles around the ring. Williams staggers into the ropes! The bell sounds for the last round of the bout. Chris Byrd's corner didn't ignore the swelling he's suffered so far in this bout. Williams does a great job with subtle movement to avoid Byrd's punches in close. Byrd doesn't connect with the jab. That combination from Byrd has some power behind it! Byrd looks to land a jab but misses the mark. Williams backs into the upper corner. And Chris Byrd is told to watch the low blows by Referee Burke. Byrd lands a devastating hook! It looks like Byrd has shaken off the effects of the knockdown he suffered in the last round. Williams connects with a solid cross! Byrd is staggered ... Round 5 is about to begin... There's the bell! George Chuvalo fires a shot, but it glances off Wilder's shoulder. Deontay Wilder connects with a cross. Freddie Roach knows Wilder lost that last round, but he took the positive approach between rounds. Chuvalo's left hook has found a home on the side of Wilder's head! Both fighters are flatfooted now. Chuvalo blasts home a short hook to the body. Wilder lands a big hook to the jaw of Chuvalo. Chuvalo was stopped cold by that shot. Chuvalo drives home a wicked hook to the midsection! That hook really hurt Deontay Wilder! Referee Florian is taking a close look at Wilder & if he doesn't respond, this fight could be over. Chuvalo connects with a solid uppercut! Cobb looks to be in fair shape as Round 11 gets underway. Al Braverman not only gave Wepner encouragement between rounds but also some solid advice on how to handle Cobb. Cobb pins Wepner's arms against his body stopping him from throwing any punches. Cobb is leaning on the back of Wepner's neck and Esteves has seen enough as he issues a warning. Round 7 is about to begin ... There's the bell! A minute wasn't enough to eliminate or even significantly reduce Coetzee's swelling. The fighters are trading punches and Coetzee seems to have won that exchange. Gerrie Coetzee doubles up on the jab and he managed to score with the second one. Coetzee rips a cross to the stomach of Weaver, but there was really no power behind it. Weaver retreats to his own corner ... Coetzee fires and misses. Weaver lands a strong hook! Weaver takes a hard uppercut right on the button and he’s down! Referee Wright crouches over Weaver and begins to count ... Weaver is struggling to regain his feet as the count reaches 3. 10!
