Nice to see the offense coming around. From 8th in the NL at the 25 game mark to 2nd half way through the season. The Expos hold a slim lead on runs scored against, the Cardinals have given up 2 more the Montreal. What I find interesting is that we are not great in tight games. We are 1-4 in extra innings and we are only 9-10 in one-run games. This may reflect more on the offensive side as we had a struggle to score runs in April. Overall the fans are coming back, attendance is up from 1974 from 25,113 to 29,856 currently. We have over 30,000 in our last 9 games.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP
Trevino, Javier 28 7-0 1.79 11 80 53 0.98
Marks, Eric 27 6-3 3.12 11 75 52 1.17
Stuart, Eric 31 4-3 2.75 11 75 54 1.05
Taft, Jamari 27 5-4 3.88 10 65 61 1.25
Turner, Scott 29 4-1 1.90 7 52 31 1.08

The best staff in the NL this season. We are waiting on the news from the training staff on Javier Trevino, he was hit with a pitch in his last outing and we hope it is not serious. Trevino leads the MLB with qualifying ERA at 1.79. He is also tied in the MLB with 7 wins. Trevino also leads the MLB with 80.2 innings pitched. Eric Marks is only surpassed by Trevino and the Twins Fukouka in wins this season. As well only 2 qualified starters have 0 HRs given this season, Marks in next with just 1. Will Eric Stuart still be an Expos after the trade deadline, He is on an expiring contract and it does not appear the Expos can afford to extend him. Stuart has been a workhorse for the Expos over the years and is tied for 4th in MLB with 75 innings pitched. Jamari Taft has struggled a little this year. His ERA is up and so are his HRs per 9 innings. He is on pace to give up 16 HRs in comparison to just 11 last year. Scott Turner has been a great surprise in the 5th spot in the rotation. He is 3rd in the MLB behind Trevino and Bergman in Houston for ERA at 1.90. Last year he was demoted at the half way point as he struggled, but he certainly has given the Expos a great effort when needed in his 7 starts so far.

Montreal Relievers AGE W-L SV ERA IP K WHIP
Coulter, John 27 1-1 0 4.70 23 17 1.43
Jones, Robbie 30 3-1 0 2.41 18 31 1.61
Rancourt, Charlie 30 0-1 15 1.69 16 20 1.00
Clemment, Luke 24 0-0 0 5.25 12 11 1.83
Barrios, Juan 33 1-3 0 2.84 12 10 1.66
Lynn, Frank 23 0-0 0 0.79 11 10 0.53
Beasley, Aidan 25 1-1 0 3.18 11 9 0.88

Juan Barrios has rebounded from last years 5.70 ERA because of avoiding the long ball so far this season. A concern is his 5.0 BB/9 ratio. Although he has been on average during his career around the 4.0 BB per 9, the last four years he was at a highest 3.3. Young Adam Beasley has been pretty good in limited action, something that might change in the 2nd half of the season. Opponents are batting just .105 against him so far this season and a very good .517 OPS. Luke Clemment is a starter for the future for the Expos. The Expos may consider sending him down to AAA to get some starts and recalling another reliever. In AAA he has 17 career starts while with the Cubs organization and he may be needed when and if Stuart moves on. John Coulter is not having the success he had last with the Expos, but he is certainly getting the work. He has been giving up a few more hits so far this season. Robby Jones is concentrating on being mostly a set up man and without the closing role, has improved his numbers this year except for walks. The good news is that so far has not been giving up the long-ball as his HR/9 has dropped from 1.4 in 1974 to 0.5 this year. Frank Lynn is starting to find himself a spot in the Expos pen. He has been down right stingy in his 10 appearances this season with his minuscule 0.53 Whip. Although he has faced just 40 hitters, they are hitting a mere .081 against him. LHB have on 1 hit in 17 at bats this year against Lynn. The MLB's leader in saves this season is Charlie Rancourt. This year he again became the Expos full time closer. He is 15/17 in save opportunities and has a shot of exceeding his career best of 25 saves from 1973.

Montreal Catchers AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS
Samms, Nate 33 43 152 6 27 .257 .783
Capellan, David 23 10 37 1 5 .243 .633

Nate Samms had a pretty quiet start to the season, he was hitting just .181 at the 25 game mark this year. Since then he has had hits in 18 of the 21 games he has played in and is currently on a 8 game hitting streak which includes 11 hits in 30 at bats with 2 HRs and 8 RBIs. The Expos are hoping they can find the dough to resign him at the end of this season. After being drafted in the 1st round of the 1970 draft by the Expos, David Capellan has yet to see a game in AAA. after spending 3 years in A ball and last year at AA, Capellan found his way into the back up job for Samms. As a 1st round pick, the Expos hope to see Capellan take over from Samms at some point.

Montreal Infielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS
Sanchez, David 24 46 186 3 13 .263 .698
Watkins, Gene 29 47 177 4 19 .254 .676
Martinez, Fernando 32 40 134 2 16 .291 .751
Carlson, Cory 30 34 104 3 9 .337 .806
Scott, Jon 24 27 55 0 8 .255 .616
Delgado, Tony 22 15 54 1 3 .296 .759
Forristall, Eric 26 17 39 1 1 .308 .836

David Sanchez will likely become the Expos full time 2nd baseman once Delgado takes over at short. The Expos 5th round pick in 1969 looks like he should be a regular for some time. Not a power hitter, but he did hit .303 in AAA in 1974 when he played in 39 games. Sanchez leads the NL with 37 runs scored. Decent bat and very defense is what we expect to get. Gene Watkins is getting most of the work at 3B. Watkins now has 470 MLB games under his belt is has been decent offensively and pretty good defensively. He is a career .278 hitter who produces about 6-7 HRs and year and drives in 35-37. Fernando Martinez's days are slowly coming to an end with the emergence of some young middle infielders for the Expos. He is healthy but is on pace for a career low 268 at bats in a full season. He does have a career .307 batting average and did hit a few HRs during his career, but the popular 2B is likely going to find himself trade bait or see even less action in the 2nd half of this year and next. Cory Carlson like Martinez is seeing his at bats dwindling with the usage of Gonzalez and Scott at 1B, Although he is hitting well numbers wise this year, Gonzalez and Scott look like the future for the Expos. Carlson is usually good for about 10 HRs a year and 40 RBIs as season, will not get anywhere close this year.

Montreal Outfielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS
Garcia, Willie 31 48 181 3 20 .282 .783
Woodbury, Joe 31 41 162 4 17 .191 .579
Gonzalez, Ricardo 28 44 144 3 24 .250 .712
Irons, Jesse 26 39 126 7 29 .294 .934
Rodriquez, Raul 21 27 55 1 10 .345 .874

The veteran Willie Garcia has been healthy and playing like a young Willie Garcia. A career .255 hitter he averaged about 6 HRs and 35 RBIs with 30 SBs a year. He could surpass all those averages this year if he stays healthy. Garcia is 2nd in the NL with 4 triples. Joe Woodbury is struggling at the plate, although not known for his batting average (.231 career in 483 games) he has hit on average 15 HRs a year. He will likely see less at bats in the 2nd half. The 26 year old rookie, Jesse Irons has been a pleasant surprise this season. Leading the Expos in HRs with 7, Irons could surpass the 60 RBI mark..... a number reached only once by an Expos when Nate Samms had 63 in 1970. Irons leads the Expos with 10 doubles, 29 RBIs and 17 extra base hits. He is ranked 6th in the NL with 29 RBIs.

Decisions..... Decisions....... Decisions

As mentioned earlier this season, the Expos have some big decisions to make contractually. The very popular C Nate Samms is a free agent. He is looking for $7.5 M for 3 years. Extremely popular CL Charlie Rancourt is looking for 4 years at $7.5 M. MR Robbie Jones is looking for 4 years at $3.3 M while well known SP Eric Stuart is expecting 7 years and about $8.1 M per year. The trade deadline is July 12th so their is still some time to decide what we will do with these free agents. As well the Expos have other contracts to consider. 2B Fernando Martinez is on a team option for next year, CF Willie Garcia is on a team option as well for 1976. LF Joe Woodbury has a team option available for the 1976 season. Stay tuned............

Samm's best season was 1973 when he hit .277 with 15 HRs and 45 RBIs in 91 games.

Expos SP Scott Turner (5-1) allowed 4 runs on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts over 7 innings for the win. CL Charlie Rancourt got his 16th save after giving up a lead off double in the 9th but retiring the next 3 Pirates hitters. Montreal Expos (35-20) at Atlanta Braves (30-25)

The Expos will face a unfriendly crowd of just under 50,000 in Turner Field and try to solve RHP Marshall Reisinger. The 29 year old is 6-3 with a 3.19 ERA in 11 starts. Reisinger is a 3-time All Star and 1974 NL Cy Young Award winner. The Expos go with RHP Scott Turner, the 29 year old is 5-1 with a 2.29 ERA in 8 starts this year. Montreal Expos (35-21) at Atlanta Braves (31-25)

Their are 42,441 bums in the seats as the Braves host the Expos. Atlanta starts RHP Wes Winchester, the 28 year old is 3-5 with a 3.82 ERA in 12 starts. Winchester had a career best 3.03 ERA in 1973 when he was 3-3 with 4 saves in 25 games as reliever for the Athletics. Expos will go with RHP Eric Marks, the 27 year old is 7-3 with a 3.18 ERA in 12 starts. Marks had a career best 3.18 ERA last year for Montreal when he went 7-7 in 21 starts.

Atlanta 2 Montreal 1

Montreal's inablility to score runs recently has bit them in the back side again. Another strong pitching performance goes to waste as the Expos score just once. Braves SP Wes Winchester was the player of the game, he allowed 1 run on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts over 6 innings. Winchester is now 3-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 13 starts.

Expos SP Eric Marks (7-4) allowed just 2 runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts over 7.2 innings in the loss. C Nate Samms kept his hitting streak in tact, he had 3 singles for Montreal.

No question the team has slipped back a little since the 50 game mark. The Expos were 32-18 for a .640 winning percentage on June 10th, 1975, since then they are 10-15 in the last 25 games. Although we are still 1st overall defensively, or veteran starters has slipped a slight bit and our offense has been terrible.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Trevino, Javier 29 9-2 2.30 16 113 75 1.05 6.0
Marks, Eric 27 7-7 4.00 16 105 75 1.32 6.4
Taft, Jamari 27 6-6 3.82 15 99 94 1.24 8.5
Turner, Scott 29 5-4 3.07 12 85 51 1.21 5.4
Hernanez, Eddie 22 1-0 1.13 3 24 14 0.79 5.3

Yes, LHP Eric Stuart has departed via the trade to get us some more offense, but we have Eddie Hernanez who is looking like he should fit in nicely. It took 22 innings for Hernanez to give up his 1st earned run. Javier Trevino is on pace for a career season, he should exceed his 10 win best season of 1973. Eric Marks has actually stepped backwards. In his 3rd season, his 2 previous season ERA's were 2.05 and 3.18. Although Jamari Taft's ERA in higher then his career average, his whip is better then last year's 1.32. Scott Turner has looked good as he moved into the 4th spot in the rotation. A career whip of 1.39 should be bettered this year.

Montreal Relievers AGE W-L ERA Save IP K WHIP K/9
Jones, Robbie 30 5-1 1.67 0 27 44 1.26 14.7
Coulter, John 27 1-2 4.74 0 24 17 1.42 6.2

Johnson, Jeremy 28 0-0 0.00 0 9 8 0.83 7.4

Potential free agent Robby Jones is having a great season. He has a career 2.87 ERA. In his rookie season, Aiden Beasley has been effective. He only pitched 4 innings in AAA over his career. So far Jeremy Johnson has been perfect, he had a 5.93 ERA and 2.05 whip last year for the Expos in 13 innings. In his 2nd year in the MLB, Frank Lynn will improve on his 4.24 career ERA. The Expos have called up reliever Dave Marland and demoted Juan Barrios. The 28 year old Marland missed 1974 due to an injury and is 1-2 with 1 save, a 2.80 ERA in 45 innings for Seattle (AAA). Carl Mathieu has shuffled from AAA to the MLB over the past 5 seasons, this will be a tell tale season for him. Charlie Rancourt will likely not be with the club in 1976, he would like to set a BP by exceeding 25 saves this year that he had in 1973.

Montreal Catchers AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Samms, Nate 33 63 228 12 38 .281 .856 0
Capellan, David 23 19 63 1 8 .175 .470 0

Nate Samms has recovered very nicely from a terrible start to the season. In fact he had a 22 game hitting streak going at one point. This has been his best OPS season, his previous high was in 1970 when he hit 18 HRs and was .816. David Capellan has been sent to AAA, the Expos called up 26 year old Ricky Shvartsman, he is hitting .266 with 7 HRs and 51 RBIs in 61 AAA games.

Montreal Infielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB

Scott, Jon 24 31 61 0 8 .230 .558 0
Forristall, Eric 26 22 44 1 2 .273 .764 4

Cory Carlson has been relegated to basically a platoon player, he is signed until 1976 making $5.5 M so he could be trade bait. Matt Terry is playing a lot of 1B since coming over in a trade, he is hitting .259 with 1 HR and 6 RBIs in the 12 games since the trade with Montreal. Fernando Martinez is still effective with limited at bats, a career .308 hitter. Expos 3B Gene Watkins is still not been what the Expos hoped when they got him in a trade with the Reds. He is under his .277 career batting average and .716 OPS in 493 career MLB games. Rookie Tony Delgado has played good defense and average bat, just like the scouts said he would. With 9 HRs in 392 career professional baseball games, the batting expectations are not high. Eric Forristall is in his 3rd MLB season splitting all 3 in the AAA as well. A speedy average fielder and above average bat.

Montreal Outfielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Dahms, Josh 33 72 244 10 32 .254 .753 5

Irons, Jesse 26 62 192 8 34 .255 .794 10
Rodriquez, Raul 21 50 109 4 22 .330 .874 13

Ricardo Gonzalez is considered a rookie, at 28 years of age he has been pretty good at the plate and versatile enough to play at 1B as well as all 3 outfield positions. Raul Rodriquez is another rookie. Rodriquez for the most skipped AAA where played just 13 games in 1974. Jesse Irons was an All Star in his 1st season in the MLB. Although he has cooled down since his great start to the season, He has hit just 1 HR since the 50 game mark this year. Danny Plantz was called up by the Expos and they demoted veteran Joe Woodbury. The 26 year old only hit .188 in 48 games for Montreal last year but is hitting .256 with 6 HRs and 30 RBIs in 73 AAA games this year. Josh Dahms was added to get some offense, in 15 games since the trade he has hit just .220 with 1 HR and 3 RBIs.

July 13th, 1975
San Diego 4 Montreal1
The Expos inability to score runs hashurt them again. Unable to acquire offense at the deadline wastedanother starting pitchers effort. SP JavierTrevino (10-3) allowed 2 runs on 6 hits with 8 Ks over 7innings but was saddled with the loss. The Expos were held to just 6hits.

July 14th, 1975 (Resumed Expos atReds suspended game)
Cincinnati 6 Montreal5 (10)
The Expos resumed the game tied 2-2 andscored 3 unearned runs in the top of the 8th to take the lead. Again, the Expos bull-pen including CL CharlieRancourt came unglued. REL CarlMathieu gave up a 2 runs in the 8th to bring CL CharlieRancourt (0-2) for the 9th, he goes and blows his 3rd saveand finally give ups the winning run in the 10th. SP JamariTaft allowed 2 runs on 4 hits over 7 innings as thestarters again did their job. 3B GeneWatkins finished with 3 hits.

July 15th, 1975
Pittsburgh 7 Montreal6
Another game, another blow save by thebull-pen. Leading 5-3 going into the 7th the Expos pen gives up runsin the 7th, 8th and 9th to blow another game. SP ScottTurner allowed 3 runs on 7 hits over 6 innings and leftthe game with a lead. REL Aiden Beasleyallowed 3 runs on 5 hits in his 2 innings of work and REL FrankLynn (0-2) gave up 3 straight base runners with outgetting an out in the walk off loss. The Expos got 2 HR's from LFRicardo Gonzalez along with 4RBIs.

Atlanta Braves SP Robbie Morrisspins a shut out in a 6-0 win over the Reds. He allowed just 2 hits. The 33 year old is now 6-7 with a 3.75 ERA in 18 starts.

July 16th, 1975
Montreal 4Pittsburgh 1
One way to ensure that you bull-pendoesn't blow a save is to pitch a complete game. Expos SP EddieHernanez did just that allowing 1 run on 4 hits andstriking out 6. Hernanez improvesto 2-1 with a 1.10 ERA in 5 starts.

Atlanta Braves SP Marshall Reisingerallowed 2 hits and had 11 Ks in a 2-0 shut out win over the Reds. The 29 year old is now 11-5 with a 2.53 ERA in 18 starts.

July 17th, 1975
Pittsburgh 4 Montreal2
The Expos bull-pen is doing everythingthey can do to blow the NL East Pennant. A 2-run HR in the bottom ofthe 8th broke up a 2-2 tie and the Expos lost again. Expos SP EricMarks allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts over 7innings but left the game tied. REL CarlMathieu (2-1) allowed the winning run in the 8th. 3B GeneWatkins had 3 hits as the Expos out hit the Pirates 12 to5.

July 18th, 1975
New York 1 Montreal0
The losses continue to pile up as thebats this time let down another starting pitcher. A solo HR in the4th is all the Mets would need as the Expos only had 5 hits. Expos SPJavier Trevino (10-4) allowed 1run on 3 hits over 7 innings for the loss. Surprizingly the Exposstill own a 1 game lead in the NL East after going just 2-8 in theirlast 10. Both the Cardinals and Pirates are just a game back.

July 19th, 1975
Montreal 5New York 1
The Expos get back in the win columnwith a great start by SP Jamari Taft. Taft(7-6) allowed 1 run on 5 hits with 5 Ks over 6 innings for the win.The Expos took no chances by allowing little used CL CharlieRancourt to get the final 3 outs. RF JoshDahms left the game when injured throwing a balldefensively. LF Raul Rodriquezhad 3 hits while 3B Gene Watkinshit his 7th HR of the year.

July 20th, 1975
New York 6 Montreal4
The Expos pen blows another lead, thistime a 4-2 lead after six. REL Carl Mathieu(2-2) blows his 3rd save of the season giving up 4 runs over 2innings. Expos SP Scott Turner allowed2 runs on 4 hits over 5 innings. The Expos got CNate Samms 13th HR of the year in the 1st inning.

July 23rd,1975
Atlanta 5 Montreal3
The Expos out hit the Braves werebetter at cashing them in as the Expos late season strugglescontinue. Expos SP Javier Trevino(10-5) lost for the 3rd straight time despite allowing a total of 6earned runs over 21 innings in those 3 starts.Trevino allowed 3 runson 4 hits with 5 Ks over 7 innings in this loss.
