BOSTON RED SOX VS PITTSBURGH PIRATES
The Final 4 of the 1912 Gauntlet. With 93 wins in 1912, the Pirates would provide a stiff test to the 1912 World Series Champions. The Red Sox went into Pittsburgh for Game 1 and handled the home team. Boston out-hit Pittsburgh 14-12 en route to a 6-2 win. Smoky Joe Wood got the victory. Tris Speaker went 3-for-3, Heinie Wagner went 3-for-4 and Jake Stahl went 3-for-5. 9 different Pirates got a base hit in a losing effort. The Red Sox started off Game 2 scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st. But the Pirates came back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd and the game was suddenly a 5-5 tie. The score was 6-6 when Bobby Byrne slapped down an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th to lift the Pirates to a 7-6 win. Honus Wagner led the 14-hit Pittsburgh attack by going 3-for-4 as 9 different Pirates got at least 1 hit and 7 different Pirates scored a run. Pittsburgh overcame 4 errors to tie the series 1-1 as the scene shifted to Boston for Game 3. In Game 3, the Pirates committed 3 errors and that led directly to the Red Sox taking a 4-2 win. Smoky Joe Wood allowed just 1 earned run to get the win while Marty O'Toole allowed just 2 earned runs but got the loss. The Pirates stormed back in Game 4 to reclaim home field advantage in the series. Pittsburgh took a 3-0 lead and then added 3 more in the top of the 4th to make it 6-0. Boston came back with 3 in the bottom of the 6th to cut it to 5-3 but the Pirates added 3 more in the top of the 8th to win 9-3. Pittsburgh out-hit Boston 17-5 and easily overcame 4 errors to get the win. Howie Camnitz allowed just 2 earned runs in 7 innings to get the win. Honus Wagner had 3 RBI, Mike Doniin went 3-for-5 and Dots Miller went 3-for-6 as 9 different Pittsburgh batters got a hit. With the series tied 2-2, the two teams met for the last game in Boston. Pittsburgh put 5 runs on the board in the top of the 1st in Game 5 and went on to an easy 9-2 win. While the Pirates were getting 11 hits, the Red Sox were committing 4 errors. Howie Camnitz pitched 6 innings to get the win. Alex McCarthy had 3 RBI as 7 different Pirates got at least 1 hit. Bill Carrigan went 3-for-3 for Boston. The series returned to Pittsburgh for Game 6 with the Pirates up 3-2. The 1912 World Series Champions were facing elimination and were tied 1-1 before scoring 3 runs in the top of the 5th, including a 2-run homer by Duffy Lewis, to take a 4-1 lead. And that was enough offense for Smoky Joe Wood as Boston forced a Game 7 with a 4-2 win. Tris Speaker went 3-for-4. The Pirates committed 3 errors. Then, in Game 7, the Pirates trailed 1-0 but scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to grab a commanding 8-1 lead. That's all the Pirates needed as thy took Game 7 8-2. Howie Camnitz pitched 7.2 innings to get the win. 7 different Pirates got at least 1 hit as Pittsburgh got 10 as a team. Camnitz also had 3 RBI as 8 different Pirates scored a run. PITTSBURGH PIRATES VS NEW YORK GIANTS
Game 1 went to the Giants 5-2. New York scored 3 in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead and never trailed. The Giants won despite committing 3 errors. Rube Marquard allowed just 1 earned run to get the win. The Pirates took Game 2 3-0 as Claude Hendrix pitched a 3 hit shutout. The series moved to Pittsburgh but the Giants bounded back with a 3-1 win powered by an 11 hit attack. Rube Marquard again shut down the Pittsburgh bats. Art Fletcher and Chief Meyers each went 3-for-5. The Pirates evened the series up again in Game 4 with a 4-1 win, out-hitting the Giants 12-4. Claude Hendrix got his second win of the series. Mike Donlin went 3-for-4, including a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th that was the game's last run scored. In Game 5, Dots Miller saved the Pirates from what could have been a demoralizing choke job. Pittsburgh led 5-1 before the Giants scored 4 in thw top of the 9th to tie the game. But Miller hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 9th and the Pirates escaped with a 6-5 win to move within on victory of playing for the 1912 Gauntlet Championship. Pittsburgh tallied 14 hits while Giants committed 4 errors. Chief Meyers went 4-for-5 for New York. The scene returned to the Big Apple for Game 6. Facing elimination, the Giants fell behind 2-1 in the 1st inning but then scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 4-2 lead and went on to be victorious 5-3 and force a Game 7 as the Pirates committed 3 errors in the game. Rube Marquard allowed just 2 earned runs to get his 3rd win of the series. Red Murray hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th for the game's final score. Honus Wagner went 3-for-4 for the Pirates. It was only fitting that Game 7 went into extra innings. Through 10 innings, the score was tied 2-2. But the Pirates scored a run in the top of the 11th, aided by the 5th Giants error of the game and Pittsburgh won 3-2 and moved on to face the Philadelphia Athletics for the 1912 Gauntlet Championship. The Pirates knocked out 14 hits in the game. Claude Hendrix beat Christy Mathewson for the third time in the series as each pitcher allowed just 1 earned run. PITTSBURGH PIRATES VS PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS
An early lead led to the Athletics taking Game 1 6-4. Philadelphia built a quick 5-0 lead with a 3 run burst in the bottom of the 2nd and held on to win. Each team had 12 hits in the game. Eddie Plank went the distance to get the win. 7 different Athletics get a hit. Mike Donlin went 3-for-5 as 7 different Pirates got a hit as well. The Pirates came back to take Game 2 5-3. The game was a sloppy one as Pittsburgh committed 5 errors and the Athletics made 3. Claude Hendricks allowed just 2 earned runs in 8 innings to get the win. 7 different Athletics got at least 1 base hit. The series moved to Pittsburgh for Game 3. And the Pirates embarrassed the Athletics. Pittsburgh got 3 in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead and then added 4 in the bottom of the 5th to go up 7-1. The Pirates kept pouring it on and crushed Philadelphia 11-2. Pittsburgh out-hit the Athletics 13-11. Marty O'Toole got the win. Mike Donlin went 3-for-5 as 7 different Pirates got a hit. Chief Wilson had 3 RBI as 8 different Pirates scored at least once. 8 different Athletics got a hit, including Amos Strunk, who hit a solo home run in the top of the 8th. In Game 4, the Athletics went from having this series tied to suddenly facing elimination. Philadelphia built a 5-1 lead but the Pirates came back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 5. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, Bobby Byrne hit a walk-off RBI triple for the 6-5 Pittsburgh win. The Pirates had 12 hits in the game. Claude Hendricks got another win in The Gauntlet. 8 different Pirates got a hit. For the Athletics, Eddie Collins Sr went 3-for-5 and Amos Strunk had a solo home run in the top of the 3rd. Things looked bleak for the Athletics in Game 5 as the Pirates broke out to an early 4-0 lead. But then Philadelphia came back with 6 runs in the top of the 5th to take a 6-4 lead. But then the Pirates came back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th to end the series with a 9-6 win. 7 errors doomed the Athletics. Pittsburgh out-hit Philadelphia 12-11. Chief Wilson went 3-for-4 as 7 different Pirates got at least 1 hit and 7 different Pirates also scored at least 1 run. 8 different Athletics got at least 1 hit. Mike Donlin was named Series MVP. 1911 PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS VS 1912 PITTSBURGH PIRATES
After beating the 1912 Athletics, the Pirates faced the 1911 Athletics. The Pirates continued their roll with a 7-3 win in Game 1. Pittsburgh scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to build a 4-0 lead and stretched the lead to 7-0 before the Athletics scored 3 in the top of the 7th for the final score. The Pirates had 10 hits while the Athletics committed 4 errors. Marty O'Toole pitched 8 innings to get the win. 7 different Pittsburgh batters got at least 1 hit. Game 2 belonged to the pitchers as the Pirates came out on top 2-1. Claude Hendrix got the win. Eddie Plank allowed just 4 hits but got the loss. The series moved across the state to Philadelphia for Game 3. And into extra innings it went. In the top of the 13th inning, the Pirates brought 3 runners home to take a 7-4 win and a 3-0 lead in the series. Marty O'Toole pitched 9 innings for Pittsburgh. Jack Coombs allowed just 2 earned runs in 9 innings for Philadelphia. The Pirates out-hit the Athletics 13-10. Philadelphia also committed 5 errors. Dots Miller went 3-for-7 with 4 RBI. 9 different Pirates got at least 1 hit. Home Run Baker went 3-for-6 for the Athletics. A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th saved the Athletics as Philadelphia won Game 4 5-4. Each team committed 3 errors. Eddie Plank allowed just 1 earned run to get the win. Jack Lapp went 3-for-4. 7 different Pirates got at least 1 hit. The Athletics scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st of Game 5 to take a 3-1 lead. Errors absolutely killed Pittsburgh in Game 5. The Pirates committed 8 of them and the Athletics took advantage to the tune of 10-1. Pittsburgh out-hit Philadelphia 11-10. Chief Bender got the win. ST LOUIS BROWNS VS CINCINNATI REDS
The 1913 Gauntlet began with two teams that finished well below .500 which is the way it usually should be. The Browns were 39 games below .500 while the Reds ended the season 25 games below .500. The series began in Cincinnati. Game 1 went back and forth before the Browns prevailed 7-5. St Louis out-hit the Reds 16-11 and prevailed despite committing 4 errors. Burt Shotton went 3-for-3 and scored 3 times. Jimmy Austin went 3-for-5 and also scored 3 times as 10 different St Louis batters got at least 1 hit. George Stovall and Del Pratt each had 3 RBI. 7 different Reds got at least 1 hit. The Reds came back strong in Game 2. Cincinnati scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 4-3 lead and then cruised on from there to a 9-3 win. The Reds broke out a 13-hit attack and overcame 3 errors to win. Chief Johnson pitched 8.2 innings to get the win. Bob Bescher went 3-for-5 and scored 4 runs. Joe Tinker also went 3-for-5 as 8 different Reds got at least one hit. Beals Becker got 3 RBI, including a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th. The series moved to St Louis for Game 3. The Browns were all over the Reds in this one. St Louis scored 3 in the bottom of the 1st to go up 3-0 and then 4 in the bottom of the 3rd to take a commanding 7-2 lead en route to a 10-4 victory. The Browns out-hit the Reds 12-10. Del Pratt went 3-for-4. George Stovall went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI. 8 different Browns got at least 1 hit. Burt Shotton scored 3 times. Joe Tinker went 3-for-4 as 7 different Reds got at least 1 hit. 9 innings wasn't enough to settle Game 4. St Louis scored 3 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 5-1 lead but the Reds came back with 3 in the top of the 6th to cut it to 5-4. It was 5-5 after 9. In the bottom of the 10th, a sac fly brought in the winning run and St Louis won 6-5 to take a 3-1 lead in the series. The Reds had 11 hits in the game while the Browns committed 4 errors. 7 different Browns got a hit. Joe Tinker and Beals Becker each went 3-for-5 for Cincinnati. Facing eliminaion, the Reds built an early 4-0 lead in Game 5 as Joe Tinker hit a solo home run in the top of the 3rd. But St Louis came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to cut it to 4-3. It stayed that was until the Reds put 3 runs up in the top of the 7th to take a 7-3 lead and went on to win 7-4. Each team had 11 hits but the Browns committed 4 errors. 7 different Reds got a hit. Tommy Clarke scored a couple of runs as well. Johnny Johnston went 3-for-4 for St Louis. The series returned to Ohio for Game 6. It went down to the wire but 4 errors doomed the Reds as St Louis won 4-3 to advance in the 1913 Gauntlet. George Baumgardner allowed 1 run on 4 hits in 7 innings to get the win.
