1st August 1873 The fans of the Red Stockings are not sure where the team is heading this season after they posted another average month in July. The team managed a 3-4 month and fell to 3rd place in the NL. This leaves them 5.5 games behind the leading White Stockings. The team did okay on the batting side of the team as they scored 52 runs during the month. The best of the batting came in the form of Short Stop Mike McGreary. McGreary played all 7 games and had 34 at bats in which he gained an average of .471. He did this with 16 hits, 5 runs and 5 RBI's. The pitching struggled a little in July. Bobby Mathews had his worst month for a while as he posted an ERA of 4.05 from the 7 game starts. He only pitched 46.2 innings in which he gave up 74 hits and 21 earned runs. 1st August 1873 The fans of the Brooklyn Atlantics saw a slight improvement from their team in July. The team still sits last but have closed the gap slightly. The team managed a 4-4 month in July. The batting saw a struggle as they produced only 44 runs during the month. Third Baseman Bill Boyd was the exception to this as he hit an average of .514 for the month of July. He had 37 at bats in the 8 games he started to produce 19 hits, 10 runs and 4 RBI's including a home run. This form earned him the NL Batter of the Month award. Joe Gerhardt picked up the Rookie of the Month award for the NL. He had 2 hits from 3 at bats in 2 games for an average of .666. The pitching was led by an improved performance from rookie Ed Stratton. Stratton finally found his form as he pitched 67 innings in the 8 games he played. This work saw him give up 87 hits and 14 earned runs for an ERA of 1.88. The team gave up a 70 runs during the month. Marty Swandell was bought up from the minor in replacement for Val Robinson at the start of the month. 1st August 1873 The fans of the White Stockings got shaken, out of their complacency over the NL title, in July as the team let their lead slip a little during the month. The team only managed a 3-5 record during the month but still lead the NL pennant race by 4.5 games. The batting struggled a little in the month as they scored 55 runs. The best of the batting came from Catcher Deacon White. White produced a solid performance as he picked up 18 hits from 37 at bats. This produced an average of .486. He also gained 7 runs and 10 RBI's. The pitching continued to be led by the arm of Jim Britt. Britt started all 8 games and pitched 61 innings for an ERA of 2.95. He gave up 77 hits and 20 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 48 runs during the month. This record was good enough to move them up to 2nd place in the NL table and close the gap in the pennant race to 4.5 games. The batting managed to score an excellent 73 runs during the month. The leadin batter during this time was Second Baseman Bob Ferguson. Ferguson had anexcellent month with the bat as he hit .486 for the month. He did this from 37 at bats with 18 hits. He also claimed 14 runs and 6 RBI's. The pitching continued to be led by Bill Stearns pitched all 7 games. He pitched 57 innings and gave up 72 hits and 13 earned runs. 1st August 1873 The Cleveland Blues have found them selves slowly drifting back towards the bottom of the table in the last couple of months. In July the team picked up 3 wins and 4 losses. This has left them in 3rd place in the AL table 5 games behind the Brown Stockings. The batting saw a lot of struggles during the month as the team used 19 batters during the month. This can be seen in the low 39 runs scored by the team. The best of this poor performance was catcher Frank Fleet. Fleet had 31 at bats which produced 8 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI's. This gave him an avergae of .258 Jim Holdsworth picked up the AL Rookie of the Month award again in July with an average of .233 from 7 starts. The pitching struggled a little against the low run scoring of the batting. The starter Cy Bentley produced a solid month as he pitched 53.2 innings in 7 games. 1st September 1873 The fans of the Canaries are starting to sense that the pressure their team is applying is starting to tell. The team picked up a 4-3 record in August to edge them ever closer to the top of the AL table as they now sit only 2.5 games behind the St. Louis Brown Stockings. The batting was solid if unspectacular again as they picked up 39 runs in the 7 games played. The best of the batting came in the form of Right Fielder Eddie Booth. Booth started 6 games and had 27 at bats. These at bats produced 10 hits, 5 runs and 3 RBI's to give him an average of .370 The pitching is the thing that is winning the team the games as Cherokee Fisher again produced a wonderful month.Fisher pitched 62 innings in 7 games to post an ERA of 2.76. He gave up 79 hits and 19 earned runs. This was again good enough to win him his 11th AL Pitcher of the Month award. The team gave up a total of 53 runs. Fred Cone returned from injury early in the month and Sy Studley was sent back to the minors. The team went 4-5 in the month of August which did move them down to last place in the NL. They are still in the pennant race but are 4.5 games off the leaders. The batting tried to shine during the month with 71 runs scored. The best of this batting for a second month running was Short Stop Mike McGeary. McGeary played all 9 games from the start and had 38 at bats for an average of .421. He also claimed 16 hits, 9 runs and 13 RBI's. The pitching showed some improvement as Bobby Mathews posted a better ERA of 2.90 for the month of August. This ERA was built from 9 games where he pitched 71.1 innings. He gave up 104 hits and 23 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 73 runs during the month. Fraley Rodgers returned from injury mid month. Scott Hastings a hamstring strain late in the month that may keep him out for the rest of the season after being told to rest it for 6 weeks. 1st September 1873 The Fans of the White Stockings are getting very jittery as the season wends its way to its climax. The team's struggles in August didn't help the fans nerves as they saw the lead at the top of the NL table cut to 2.5 games. The team managed a poor record of 2-5 in August. The batting struggled a little in August. The hitting for base was good but the conversion rate for runs was not as they only scored 44 runs. Star Short Stop Ross Barnes showed the exception to this as he managed to hit 16 times from 31 at bats to gain an average of .516 for the month. This included 5 runs and 10 RBI's. The pitching really struggled during the month as Jim Britt showed that the last couple of seasons are starting to catch up with him tiredness wise. Britt started all 7 games but only pitched 46.1 innings for an ERA of 4.08. This included giving up 89 hits and 21 earned runs. Henry Kessler was awarded the Rookie of the Month award for the NL after starting 5 games with 22 at bats and 7 hits for an average of .318 The pitching form of Bill Stearns continues to show why he is always feared by opposition batters. He started all 9 games and pitched 72.1 innings on his way to an ERA of 2.99. In this work he gave up 96 hits and 24 earned runs. This earned him the NL Pitcher of the Month award to make it a clean sweep for the Reds. 1st September 1873 The Blues fans Continue to see their team struggling to play average ball as they again only produced a 4-5 month in August. This left them 5 games behind the leaders in third place in the AL. The batting again put up solid if unspectacular numbers on their way to 84 runs scored. The best of these was again Catcher Frank Fleet. Fleet started all 9 games and produced an average of .375 with 15 hits, 11 runs and 6 RBI's. The voters decided not to award him the AL Batter of the Month award though and gave that instead to team mate Jim Holdsworth who had an average of .310 from 42 at bats. He gained 13 hits, 10 runs and 7 RBI's. Holdsworth also picked up another Rookie of the Month award. There was bad news during the month as starter Cy Bentley went down with an injury. Bruised a bone in his wrist and was told to rest for 2 weeks. The pitching from this can be seen as a mixture of Bentley and Candy Cummings. Bentley sarted six games gaining an ERA of 3.20 with 16 earned runs against him. The relief in Cummings played 4 games including 3 starts to post an ERA of 2.96 as he gave up 8 earned runs.
