Saturday, August 18, 1877, vs. St. Louis Brown Stockings (29-16 2nd place in the Liberty League)

John Bendickson is a little gassed, so Everette gets the start.

We are 6-3 against St. Louis this season and swept them at their place last time we met. Another sweep here would basically end the pennant race. Losing the series would make the final 12 games of the season very stressful.

Socks Hawkins, St.L. (26 R 14-6 2.01) vs. Abe Everette, Troy (28 L 15-6 1.77)

Won - 4 to 3

We were up 3 to 2 in the top of the 9th with 2 outs when rookie 3B Rube Ford blasted one out of the park to tie the game. It's his second home run of the season and the second against us. In the bottom of the 9th, Hawkins retired the first 2 Haymakers, but then 3B Wash Horsfall singled and stole second base. LF John Hagadorn, who had come in for defense in the top of the inning, then hit a groundball right to Bub Crawford at short, but Crawford, playing out of position because of an injury to Marvin Frank earlier in the game, threw the ball over the first baseman's head and Horsfall scored the winning run. Frank tore a hamstring and is expected to miss about 5 weeks.

Horsfall had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs. I had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and had 3 RBIs. St. Louis out-hit us 13 to 8.

Other Games:
Washington (6) at Philadelphia (5) - Rufus Lee (6-13) over Charlie Moss (19-25). 2B Calvin Biron had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI, but made 5 errors. 3B/Manager Bill Sears had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored twice and had an RBI and made 2 errors.

Boston (6) at Pittsburgh (9) - Bones Lane (18-21) over Charlie Morlock (15-20). LF Silver Borresen had 2 hits with a triple and 3 RBIs. RF Arther Purfield had 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. Rookie 3B Sam Clark had 2 hits with a triple, scored twice and had 2 RBIs.

Wednesday, August 22, 1877, vs. St. Louis Brown Stockings (29-17 2nd place in the Liberty League)

Socks Hawkins, St.L. (26 R 14-7 1.92) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 14-8 2.07)

Lost - 4 to 3

Hawkins held us to 8 hits for the second game in a row. He's the real deal, I think. Wonder what they are going to do when Fred Cline comes back. He might be back for the last game or two of the season. But he's 35 and if I was Pop Massey, the manager of St. Louis, I'd stick with the kid.

1B Pete Bucolo had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base off of Eb Burke (not many have), scored a run and had an RBI.

The top five in our lineup had all 8 of our hits.

Other Games:
Washington (4) at Philadelphia (6) - Charlie Moss (20-25) over Rufus Lee (6-14). 24-year-old rookie 1B Fred Moore, making his 2ns start of his career, had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Jim Ware had 3 hits, stole a base, was caught once, scored twice and had 2 RBIs.

Boston (6) at Pittsburgh (7) - Bones Lane (19-21) over Charlie Morlock (15-21). CF Willie Schommer hit a 2-out single in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. RF Arther Purfield had 3 hits with a double and scored the winning run.

Saturday, August 25, 1877, vs. St. Louis Brown Stockings (30-17 2nd place in the Liberty League)

Rubber game of the series. A win will give us a 3 game lead with 12 to play. A loss and the lead is but 1.

Socks Hawkins, St.L. (26 R 15-7 1.88) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 14-9 2.07)

Lost - 7 to 6 in 14 innings

The right team won this game. We stunk the joint up with 12 errors. I made 3 myself. No one did anything for us, except SS Bill Rush and C Eb Burke. They each had 3 hits with a double and knocked in 2 runs. Rush scored twice, while Burke scored once.

We hit Hawkins pretty good, scoring 6 runs off him in 8 innings. But then Pop Massey brought in Roger Lake and it was lights out for our offense. We only got 1 hit off him in 6 innings.

Other Games:

Washington (5) at Philadelphia (6) in 12 innings - Charlie Moss (21-25) over Rufus Lee (6-15). 24-year-old rookie 1B Fred Moore, making his 3rd start of his career, had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. The winning run was scored by CF John Froom when Washington 2B Calvin Biron booted a groundball.

Boston (2) at Pittsburgh (7) - Bones Lane (20-21) over Charlie Morlock (15-22). LF Silver Borresen had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base and score 2 runs. C Jake Houghton had 3 hits with a double, scored twice and had an RBI.

In the New York State Championship Association, there is a 3-wat tie for first place with 12 games to go. Auburn, Poughkeepsie and Syracuse are all 27-21. Buffalo is 2 games back.

In the New England League, Hartford holds a 3 game lead over Fall River and Springfield.

21-year-old 2B Frank Rosenbaum of Fall River, who broke his elbow back in early June, has announced that he is retiring, The elbow has not healed properly and doctors do not think he will ever be able to throw well again. At the time of the injury, Rosenbaum was batting .404 and with his solid fielding skills, seemed like a sure bet to be picked highly in this winter's B League draft.

Wednesday, August 29, 1877, at Pittsburgh Alleghenys (25-23 3rd place in the Liberty League)

Every game is a must-win game now. We are 5-4 against Pittsburgh on the season. The beat us 2 of 3 at our place last time we met. We are 9-7 all-time against Bones Lane.

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 14-10 1.98) vs. Bones Lane, Pitts. (34 L 20-21 2.72)

Lost - 10 to 5

Bendickson just stunk up the joint today. Our defense only made 3 errors and 1 of them was by Bendickson. RF Wash Horsfall had 3 hits and scored a run. I was hitless for the 2nd straight game.

C Jake Houghton was the star for Pittsburgh. He had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Other Games:

Philadelphia (3) at Boston (4) - Charlie Morlock (16-22) over Charlie Moss (21-26). Morlock held Philadelphia to 4 hits. 1b Frank Helms doubled home the winning run with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th. He had 3 hits on the day. Charlie Morlock had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI.

St. Louis (3) at Washington (4) - Rufus Lee (7-15) over Socks Hawkins (15-8). Lee held St. Louis to 6 hits. 1B Lou Knight singled home 2B Calvin Biron, who had tripled, with 1 out to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. John Rodgers singled in the winner with 2 outs. Biron had 3 hits. 3B/Manager Bill Sears had 3 hits and scored a run.

Saturday, September 1, 1877, at Pittsburgh Alleghenys (26-23 3rd place in the Liberty League)

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 14-11 2.14) vs. Bones Lane, Pitts. (34 L 21-21 2.70)

Won - 5 to 1

Both pitchers were tough today; we only had 7 hits and Pittsburgh had 8. The difference in the game was that we only made 1 error (by me) and the Alleghenys made 6.

C Eb Burke had 2 hits with a double. SS Bill Rush had 2 hits, scored a run and knocked one in. 3B Crazy Kelley had a triple, scored and had an RBI.

Other Games:
Philadelphia (5) at Boston (4) - Charlie Moss (22-26) over Charlie Morlock (16-23). 3B Jim Ware had 2 hits with a triple, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. CF John Froom had 4 hits but no runs or RBIs. 27-year-old rookie LF Bill Harris, making his Liberty League debut for Boston had 2 triples and scored a run.

St. Louis (3) at Washington (9) - Rufus Lee (8-15) over Socks Hawkins (15-9). Lee held St. Louis to 8 hits. 1B Lou Knight had 2 hits with hit second home run of the year, scored twice and had 4 RBIs. Rufus Lee had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Thanks to the Olympics, the Haymakers now have a 2 game lead with 10 to play.

Wednesday, September 5, 1877, at Pittsburgh Alleghenys (26-24 3rd place in the Liberty League)

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 15-11 2.09) vs. Bones Lane, Pitts. (34 L 21-22 2.68)

Lost - 7 to 3

We out-hit Pittsburgh and they made more errors than us, but we lost and it wasn't even close.

LF Silver Borresen had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base, and scored 3 runs. 2B John Bohler had 2 hits with a double, scored twice and knocked in 2 and made 2 errors.

I had 3 hits, but no runs or RBIs. 3B Crazy Kelley had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBIs.

Other Games:
Philadelphia (9) at Boston (7) - Charlie Moss (23-26) over Charlie Morlock (16-24). Philadelphia scored 5 times in the top of the 9th to win. 3B Jim Ware had 3 hits and scored 3 runs. CF John Froom had 2 hits, scored twice and had 2 RBIs and made 2 errors. RF Lou Landaal had 3 hits, stole a base, scored a run and knocked one in. Rookie C Everett Hrdlicka had a double and a triple and an RBI.

St. Louis (3) at Washington (2) - Socks Hawkins (16-9) over Rufus Lee (8-16). Washington out-hit St. Louis 8 to 7 and only made 1 error, while the Brown Stockings made 6. LF Dick Bailey had 2 hits with a triple and scored twice. Socks Hawkins had a double, scored a run and knocked in 2. The Haymakers' lead over St. Louis is back down to 1 game with 9 to play.

Saturday, September 8, 1877, vs. Boston Red Caps (21-30 5th place in the Liberty League)

We are 5-4 against Boston on the year. We swept them at their place last time we met.

Charlie Morlock, Bos. (28 R 16-24 3.00) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 15-12 2.17)

Lost - 3 to 2

3 errors in the first gave them a run. A passed ball gave them another in the 4th. Have you ever noticed that passed balls only happen when someone is on base?

Meanwhile, we couldn't score anything off Morlock. We seemed to get 2 baserunners every inning, but nobody would knock them in. We finally scored in the bottom of the 8th when 1B Sol Popko led off with his 3rd home run of the year and second inside-the-park one. Another thing that hurt us trying to score was that Boston, the second worse defense in the League, only made 2 errors.

We've now lost 5 of our last 6.

Other Games:

Pittsburgh (12) at Washington (8) - Bones Lane (23-22) over Rufus Lee (8-17). LF Silver Borresen, making a strong bid for League MVP honors, had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, got caught once, scored a run and knocked 2 in. 1B Ed Parton had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. C Jake Houghton had 2 hits with a triple and a walk and scored twice. Washington's LF Charlie Jeffers only had 1 hit, but drove in 5 runs.

Philadelphia (4) at St. Louis (2) - Charlie Moss (24-26) over Socks Hawkins (16-10). 3B Jim Ware had 2 triples, stole a base and scored 3 runs. 24-year-old rookie 1B Fred Moore had 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Thanks to Charlie Moss, the Haymakers keep their 1 game lead over St. Louis.

Borresen. Meh.

Us Troyans believe in the Gold Standard!

(poor attempt at contemporary political joke, I promise I won't do it no more)

How did you remove the National Association to make the Liberty League? Whenever I try to remove the Wixom and Mullaney leagues for my dynasty, the game crashes.

It is impossible for me to give you advice on this issue without being able to see your league file. Is there someway you could get it to me?

Wednesday, September 12, 1877, vs. Boston Red Caps (22-30 5th place in the Liberty League)

Charlie Morlock, Bos. (28 R 17-24 2.97) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 15-13 2.17)

Won - 6 to 3

Okay, this is more like it. Bendickson held them to 7 hits and we got 12. 3B Wash Horsfall had 2 and scored 2 runs. I had 2, scored a run and had 2 RBIs, but I was caught stealing once. 1B Sol Popko had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. RF Bill Hammack had a 2-run double. Bendy had 2 hits with a double.

Other Games:
Pittsburgh (4) at Washington (10) - Rufus Lee (9-17) over Bones Lane (23-23). RF Barry Kemp had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. CF George Kennedy had 5 hits and scored twice.

Philadelphia (4) at St. Louis (5) - Socks Hawkins (17-10) over Charlie Moss (24-27). 1B Pete Bucolo had 2 hits and scored a run. For Philadelphia, 3B Jim Ware had 4 hits with a double, scored once and had an RBI. CF John Froom strained a muscle making a diving catch and will miss the rest of the season. The Haymakers' lead is still only one game with 7 to play.

Saturday, September 15, 1877, vs. Boston Red Caps (22-31 5th place in the Liberty League)

Charlie Morlock, Bos. (28 R 17-25 2.98) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 16-13 2.16)

Won - 10 to 7

The game was not close. We were up, 10 to 3, when some sloppy play in the 8th and 9th gave them some runs. 6 errors, 3 by SS Bill Rush and 2 by 3B Wash Horsfall. Only 1 earned run by Bendy.

Rush had 3 hits with a double, scored one and knocked one in. CF Yale Molloy had 3 hits with a bases loaded triple for 3 RBIs.

Other Games:

Pittsburgh (4) at Washington (5) - Rufus Lee (10-17) over Bones Lane (23-24). Lee held Pittsburgh to 7 hits. 2B Calvin Biron had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. It's the last good game he'll have for a while though. He tore a ligament in his knee and will take almost a full year to recover, if he ever does. He was the second baseman on the All-Liberty League team last season. LF Charlie Jeffers had 3 hits and scored a run. What a difference a day can make: CF George Kennedy, who had 5 hits last game, went 0 for 4 and grounded into 2 double plays.

Philadelphia (9) at St. Louis (8) - Charlie Moss (25-27) over Socks Hawkins (17-11). Go Centennials! 3b Jim Ware had 3 hits, stole a base and scored a pair of runs. 24-year-old rookie 1B Fred Moore had 3 hits, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. SS Dan Mitchell had 4 hits, a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. The Haymakers now have a 2 game lead over St. Louis with 6 to play.

Wednesday, September 19, 1877, vs. Washington Olympics (19-35 6th place in the Liberty League)

We are 8-1 against Washington so far this year. We took 2 of 3 at their place last time we met. All three games were close fought battles, with 2 of them going to extra innings. Rufus Lee has been particularly effective against us so far. The last game we played against them, we won, but only had 4 hits.

Rufus Lee, Wash. (26 R 10-17 2.69) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 17-13 2.12)

Won - 9 to 6

In the second inning, Washington loaded the bases with nobody out, but we manged to get out of the inning unscathed. In the bottom of the inning, we loaded the bases with one out, but did not score.

We were down 5 to 2, going into the bottom of the 7th and I was lamenting the fact that Washington, the worst defense in the Liberty League had only made 1 error all game. Seems like teams always play better against us than anyone else. But that all changed in the bottom of the 7th when 5 hits and 5 Olympic errors netted us 6 runs and gave us an 8 to 5 lead.

In the top of the 8th, Bendickson came up with a tender shoulder. After the serious injury he had last year, I did not want to take any chances, so he came out and I put Abe Everette in. After the game, we had the doc take a look at it and he thinks Bendy will be fine with a few days rest. Whew!

LF Dave Taylor had 2 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. 1B Sol Popko had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. SS Bill Rush hit an inside-the-park home run!

Other Games:
Pittsburgh (6) at Philadelphia (8) - Charlie Moss (26-27) over Bones Lane (23-25). Rookie C Everett Hrdlicka, playing for the injured Mike Tonnies, had 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. SS Dan Mitchell hit his 2nd home run of the season. For Pittsburgh, rookie 3B Sam Clark had 4 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

St. Louis (10) at Boston (5) - Socks Hawkins (18-11) over Charlie Morlock (17-27). 3B Kid Angell had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. C Bumpus Dowdy and RF Ed Radle each had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. The Haymaker lead stays a 2 games over St. Louis with 5 to play.

Saturday, September 22, 1877, vs. Washington Olympics (19-36 6th place in the Liberty League)

Rufus Lee, Wash. (26 R 10-18 2.68) vs. Abe Everette, Troy (28 L 16-6 1.82)

Won - 4 to 1

Washington out-hit us 9 to 8, but we only made 1 error to their 4.

LF Dave Taylor had 2 hits and scored a run, but also made our only error. He has to be our most improved player this year. After hitting under .200 last year when pressed into a starting role due to injuries, he has won a starting job this year and is hitting .344.

1B Sol Popko had 2 hits and an RBI. Troy does not lead the league in runs scored, but Poppy leads the league in RBIs. And I am second! CF Yale Molloy had 2 hits and an RBI.

Other Games:
Pittsburgh (10) at Philadelphia (15) - Charlie Moss (27-27) over George Dennis (5-3) in relief of Bones Lane. SS Dan Mitchell had probably the best day at the plate of anybody in the League this year. He had 5 hits with 2 triples, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. CF Lou Landaal had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored twice and knocked in 2. Rookie C Everett Hrdlicka had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Jim Leonardi had 2 hits with a home run and had 3 RBIs. Rookie 3b Sam Clark tore something in his shoulder and will sit out the rest of the year for the Alleghenys.

St. Louis (3) at Boston (4) - Charlie Morlock (18-27) over Socks Hawkins (18-12). In the bottom of the 9th with the game tied at 3, 2b Bill Thompson reached second when he attempted to bunt for a hit and C Bumpus Dowdy threw the ball away. Thompson then stole third and scored on a fly ball by Manager/RF Pete Green to end the game. Thompson had 2 hits and stole 2 bases. CF George Kunz had 3 hits and scored a run. For St. Louis, Pete Bucolo had 4 hits and scored a run. He has all but locked up the Batting Title this year. Thanks to Boston, the Haymakers' lead is now 3 games over St. Louis with 4 to play!

Wednesday, September 25, 1877, vs. Washington Olympics (19-37 6th place in the Liberty League)

Rufus Lee, Wash. (26 R 10-19 2.63) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 18-13 2.20)

Won - 5 to 4

Each team only had 7 hits. We made 7 errors and Washington made 5.

I broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI triple and then scored on Poppy's fly out. I had 2 triples on the day and they walked me twice. I scored 2 runs and stole a base. Not a bad day, if I say so myself.

Other Games:
