Revolving Door Continues at SS for Red Sox Most Red Sox fans remember Nomar Garciaparra. While he was an average fielder at SS, the Boston favorite was the 1997 AL Rookie of the year and was runner up to Texas' Juan Gonzalez in the MVP voting in 1998. He followed up that '98 campaign by winning the AL batting title in 1999 and 2000 hitting .357 and .372 respectively. On July 31, 2004 Nomar was involved in a complicated 4 team trade involving the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins, and Montreal Expos that ultimately brought Doug Mientkiewicz and Orlando Cabrera to Boston. That was the year that brought the Red Sox their first World Series title since 1918. Since Garciaparra's departure, the Red Sox have had 13 starting Shortstops. Here is the breakdown: 2004 - Pokey Reese, Orlando Cabrera 2005 - Edgar Renteria 2006 - Alex Gonzalez 2007 - Julio Lugo 2008 - Julio Lugo 2009 - Nick Green, Alex Gonzalez 2010 - Marco Scutaro 2011 - Marco Scutaro 2012 - Mike Aviles 2013 - Jose Iglesias 2014 - Jose Iglesias 2015 - Jose Iglesias 2016 - Zack Cozart 2017 - Alcides Escobar, Javier Baez Jose Iglesias has been the longest standing shortstop that the team has had since Garciaparra's tenure at the position. When he came into the season, he was not even slated to be on the Major League roster. The team had signed Stephen Drew in the offseason prior to Scott Kier being brought on board. A Spring Training injury to Drew led to the emergence of Iglesias and the eventual departure of Drew in a deal that sent him to Houston. Iglesias rewarded the Sox for their faith in him by winning 3 consecutive Gold Gloves at shortstop. He was later traded to the Atlanta Braves where he is now their starting second baseman. With the arrival of Javier Baez, the Red Sox are closer than they have ever been to a hitter with Garciaparra's ability. While he does not quite have the same ability and potential as Garciaparra did, he makes up for what he lacks with speed and defensive ability. It may be fitting too that the youngster's uniform number is 13. Baez is only 24 years old. Could he finally be the answer that the Red Sox are looking for? Only time will tell. Pedroia Returns at Key Time for Sox May was a rough month for the Red Sox. Nothing seemed to go right for the team as they posted a 14-15 record to follow up their 18-9 April. Currently, they are 2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays with a record of 32-24. The silver lining to all of this might be the return of their team's captain, Dustin Pedroia who rejoined the Sox last week. With Pedroia in the lineup they once again have a solid top to bottom order which now needs to find its identity. New acquisitions Jorge Soler and Javier Baez have performed admirably. Soler might only be hitting .228 with the Sox but he has 6 HR and 16 RBI. Baez has posted a .296 average with 6 Hr and 18 RBI. Duane Underwood on the other hand is 0-3 as a starter and is still searching for his first major league win. Dominic Taccolini was recently promoted from Portland to AAA Pawtucket and could possibly be recalled to take Underwood's place in the rotation, at least on a trial basis. The 22 year old starter throws hard, and is thought to be major league ready. Some changes are expected soon to the Red Sox lineup. The statistical report below reflects the team's lineup at the end of May. LINEUP 1. Jackie Bradley Jr CF - .287; 5 HR; 31 RBI; 12 SB 2. Dustin Pedroia 2B - .314; 0 HR; 4 RBI in 8 Games 3. Sox Open June with a Trade Another financially motivated trade was made by the Sox as they sent OF Josh Willingham, MR Darren O'Day, and CL Brian Wilson to the Twins for SP Pedro Hernandez. Wilson, 35, had two years left on his contract both worth $6.75M with a player option in 2019 for an additional $6.75M. O'Day was on a two year deal due to make an additional $957M with a vesting option that was lofty at best. Finally, Willingham was on a one year deal for $3M. The trade not only puts the Sox in the "black" as far as their contracts go for this season but it also adds a much needed #5 starter. Hernandez is 28 and has posted a 6-2 record with a 4.54 ERA for the Twins this season. He is a Lefty, giving the Sox 3 left handed starters, a very unusual tactic in Fenway Park. The trade prompted a number of roster moves for the Red Sox. The struggling Soetsu Nishikawa was sent to AAA Pawtucket to hone his skills. To fill the open roster spots the Red Sox recalled Mike Frederick who will split time closing with Bruce Rondon, Jack Cosman to fill an additional bullpen spot, and Pedro Ciriaco who will share utility time with another "Mr. Everywhere" Emilio Bonifacio. "It's a shame to lose all three of those players, especially Brian Wilson." Kier said in a press release on Thursday, "He was great for the team, great for the city of Boston, and we wish him the best in Minnesota." The Red Sox also released their revised lineups as they try to shake things up and find their identity with their recently acquired players: Lineup vs RHP 1. Jackie Bradley Jr CF 2. Dustin Pedroia 2B 3. Freddie Freeman 1B 4. Eric Hosmer DH 5. Jorge Soler RF 6. Joe Mauer C 7. Javier Baez SS 8. Will Middlebrooks 3B 9. Ben Revere LF Lineup vs LHP 1. Javier Baez SS 2. Dustin Pedroia 2B 3. Eric Hosmer 1B 4. Jorge Soler RF 5. Freddie Freeman DH 6. Joe Mauer C 7. Will Middlebrooks 3B 8. Jackie Bradley Jr CF 9. Ben Revere LF |

Trade, Shakeups Seem to be Working After a sub-par may that saw the Red Sox post a record of 14-15, the team has rebounded in spectacular fashion. Through the first 15 days of June, the Red Sox have put up a 14-2 record. Their team's batting average is now an AL best .281, and their OBP is also the best in the league at .348. Will Middlebrooks has been on a tear hitting .412 so far having played all 14 games this month. Freddie Freeman leads the team in HR's with 4 and Jackie Bradley Jr is a perfect 5-5 in swiping bases. Cole Hamels is 3-0 in 3 starts, and Mike Frederick has posted 3 saves since being called up on June 1 to take over as the team's closer. Stephen Strasburg's struggles continue, however. He is 0-1 in 2 starts in June and has a 6.00 ERA. The second half of the month continues with the Sox in Toronto finishing up a 3 game set against the Blue Jays. Oakland then comes to Boston for a 3 game season that will take us to the All-Star break. |

Red Sox Arrive At All-Star Break with Best Record Through the first 19 games in June, the Red Sox have posted a 16-3 record, bringing their overall record to a Major League best 48-27. Their only losses in June came to Baltimore on June 6, Seattle on June 9, and Oakland on June 20th. Now, with the halfway point of the season upon them, most of the team will get a three day break. The exception to that are the six Red Sox that have been named to the AL All-Star team. The Sox will be represented by Cole Hamels, Jacob Turner, Eric Hosmer, Freddie Freeman, Javier Baez, and Jackie Bradley Jr. This is the most representatives that they have had since GM Scott Kier and Manager John Farrell took over in 2013. Mauer Injured, Lost for 6 Weeks The Red Sox took quite the blow this week when starting catcher Joe Mauer went down with a strained quadriceps. He will reportedly miss the next 6 weeks. Mauer has had a solid year both behind the plate and standing in the batter's box. He is currently hitting .291 with a .373 OBP, 6 HR, 43 RBIs, and 44 BB's to counter his 47 K's. Rookie Chris Singleton was recalled from AA Portland to initially take Mauer's spot. The young 23 year old will split time with veteran Lou Marson behind the plate in the meantime. The Red Sox currently hold a league best 69-36 record and are ahead of the 2nd place Tampa Bay Rays by 12 games. |

Red Sox Continue Amazing Season With a record of 73-37, the Boston Red Sox are 7 games better than the team with the next record, the Detroit Tigers. Over the past two months, they have gone 41-13, after a 14-15 May. "It's been unbelievable," team captain Dustin Pedroia said, "It starts with our pitching staff, continues through our offense, and ends with our bullpen. We've had our tough games, but everyone stays focused and, well, you see the result." Pedroia's assessment of the team's starting rotation was echoed by Manager John Farrell, "All five of these guys have been lights out when we needed them to be. Here are are at the end of July, and we have five pitchers who all have double digits in wins." The team's closer Mike Frederick has been a concern though. He has a 5.48 ERA and has blown 5 saves so far. Farrell downplayed the rookie's struggles, "He's learning. This is a learning process just like it was for Pap (former closer Jonathan Papelbon). We just need to give him time, and let him make his mistakes now so he can learn from them and be better in the long run. The Red Sox also took two of the three months awards. Eric Hosmer was named the AL player of the month after hitting .360 with 6 HR and 24 RBIs. It was the third time this season he's been selected hitter of the month to go along with two Player of the Week awards. A more rounded pitching staff helped Jon Lester win the pitcher of the month award. During July, he fanned 36 hitters in 37 innings and logged a 1.22 ERA while going a perfect 5-0 in 5 starts. The only player currently on the Disabled List from the team's Major League roster is Joe Mauer who is out for another 5 weeks. September Brings Call Ups As with every other year, September brings callups for Major League Baseball. This season, the Red Sox brought up a handful of players, many of whom already have major league experience. C Matthew Thaiss - Young left handed hitting catcher who had a week long call up earlier in the season. 2B Drew Sutton - A mainstay in the Red Sox organization for the past few seasons, and always a reliable infielder. OF Dominic Brown - Saw some time as a starter briefly earlier in the season when Ben Revere found himself on the DL. MR Michael Olmsted - Young hard throwing closer from Pawtucket. Red Sox Clinch on Hamels' 20th Cole Hamels improved his record to 20-8 and the Red Sox clinched their 4th straight AL East title with a 3-1 win against the Minnesota Twins. Eric Hosmer provided all the offense the Sox would need with a 2 run HR in the 2nd inning, and Bruce Rondon collected his 10th save. Hamels is the first Red Sox pitcher to reach 20 wins this season. Jon Lester will have his shot at 20 in a couple of days. Will Middlebrooks, who was placed on the DL two weeks ago, will reportedly not be back for 5 more weeks. Dominic Brown is expected to take his place on the playoff roster. Last edited by AlpineSK; 07-05-2013 at 05:50 PM. |

Colorado Bounces Back, Takes Game 2 Eddie Murray Jr continued a torrid postseason winning his 4th game as the Rockies squeak by the Red Sox 3-2. Willie Rosario hit his 3rd Hr of the post season in the first inning to jump start the Rockies, and Troy Story added an RBI double in the 3rd. Strasburg went 8 innings striking out 8 to lower his postseason record to 1-2. After a day off, the Series heads to Colorado. |

Rockies Pull Head with 7-5 Win It was a typical Colorado slugfest with 21 hits and 12 runs, but the Rockies got the best of the Red Sox taking a 2-1 series lead behind the pitching performance of Chris Sale and 6 relievers. Cole Hamels saw his record drop to 2-2, despite Eric Hosmer hitting his 4th postseason HR. |

Sox Return to Boston, Backs Up Against the Wall The series now heads back to Boston after the Rockies took a 3-1 series lead with an 8-7 squeaker win over the Red Sox. The game came down to the final innings, but Nolan Arenado and his 2 HR's helped the Rockies prevail. Jacob Turner (2-0) will face off against Eddie Murray (4-1) for game 5 in Boston. |

Series Going the Distance! Sox Force Game 7 A 2 run double by pinch hitter Darin Ruf gave the Red Sox the padding they needed to beat the Rockies 4-1. Stephen Strasburg improved his record to 2-2, and the Red Sox used 7 relievers over three innings including Mike Frederick, who pitched a perfect 9th for his 7th save of the postseason. The series now comes back to Boston for game 7 as 20 game winner Cole Hamels takes on lefty Drew Pomeranz. |

Colorado World Series Champs It came down to the 9th inning. Joe Mauer hit a 1 out double, and then pinch runner Pedro Ciriaco was moved to 3rd with an Emilio Bonifacio ground out to 2nd. Jackie Bradley Jr, the next hitter, could not capitalize, however, as he flew out to right, ending the Sox comeback chances and sealing up a 3-2 victory for the Colorado Rockies. This is the Rockies first championship in their 2nd World Series appearance. Pomeranz got the victory and Rex Brothers recorded his 7th Postseason save. Congratulations to the 2017 World Series champion Colorado Rockies! |
