Chicago Loses Gilbert Stiles

CHICAGO, IL. May 5, 1915 - Chicago fans will be disappointed to learn that Gilbert Stiles suffered a sprained ankle while colliding with a player at a base in yesterday's game. After the doctor informed the Chicago Orphans manager that Stiles was expected to miss 5 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the shortstop could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

This season Stiles is swinging the bat at a .353 pace. He's scored 24 times, while driving in 21. His on-base percentage is .451 and he has played in 30 games.

Cumberbatch Records Shutout Against Baltimore

CHICAGO, IL. May 14, 1914 - "He was too darn good for us today," grumbled the Baltimore manager after his club suffered a 6-0 shutout at the hands of Bill Cumberbatch of the Chicago Whales. He held the Baltimore Terrapins scoreless in a 1-hit whitewash.

Cumberbatch was in a zone of his own most of the game and finished with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in a strong outing.

In a postgame quote his own skipper added, "He pitched his butt off, had good velocity, good movement and had those guys off balance. Bill did a whale of a pitching job."

This season Cumberbatch has a 4-3 record with a 1.97 ERA.

Big Day with Bat: Klotz 5-5

BOSTON, MA. June 2, 1915 - Brian Klotz of the Americans was unstoppable in today's 8-0 victory over the Detroit Wolverines at American Grounds. He battered them for 5 hits in 5 at-bats.

"Boy, I was on the mark today," said the shortstop after the game. "I could see the ball real well. It's a great feeling to do this. And besides, 5-5 won't hurt your batting average like 0-5 will."

Brian Klotz singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI triple in the 8th.

This season Klotz has hit at a .262 clip with 30 RBIs, 3 home runs and 22 runs scored.

CF Mueller Taken with First Pick

NEW YORK, NY. June 16, 1915 - The 1915 Amateur Draft took place at the Hotel Imperial in Manhattan yesterday, and 20-year-old Texas native Ruben Mueller, a speedy center-fielder, was taken 1st overall by the Baltimore Terrapins.

He was drafted in the 1914 draft by the St. Paul Saints with the 2nd overall pick by the St. Paul Saints, but failed to sign with them.

Because of that, the Saints have the 2nd and 3rd pick in this draft. They selected 22-year-olds SP Bob Everly and RF Can Wilbanks to round out the top three picks.

Boston Catches Chicago, Teams Tied for 1st Place

BOSTON, MA. June 17, 1915 - After taking four of five games from the Orphans in Chicago, and then taking the first thee games of their series with St. Paul, the Boston Americans have clawed their way into a first-place tie.

The club is 11-4 thus far in June, and the Orphans are just 5-10. This past week, the Orphans lost their star third-baseman Will Eberle, and he'll be out for yet another 4 weeks. They will need to overcome his absence or June is going to be a long, long month.

Gale Tosses Shutout for Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY. June 20, 1915 - Ed Gale put a hex on Chicago in a sparkling 9-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 1-hit gem.

"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

It was anything but comfortable for Chicago.

"Gale used his changeup very well, very effectively," the opposing manager said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."

The Brooklyn Tip-Tops hurler fanned 3 and walked 2.

So far this year, 1914's #1 pick has made 21 starts, tossed 179.1 innings, struck out 75 batters and walked 48. His record is 6-12 with a 2.96 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .247 batting average.
