Unhappy Cubs in a slump!

Chicago Tribune 11 June 1931
Sports Extra

The bats have gone stone cold for the Cubs...and it happened
in a hurry!

The Cubs score just 1 run for the third straight game, and see
their lead shrink to just 2 games over the surging Miami team.

Bubba Jones took the loss, and saw his ERA jump up to a season
high 4.71

Unhappy Losing streak worsens!!!

Chicago Tribune 16 June 1931
Sports Extra

Excitement turned to deep despair today, as the Cubs came
back from a big deficit, only to lose it in the bottom of
the ninth.

This was an especially heart-breaking loss, the 9th in the
last 10 games....as it drops the Cubs into second place, a
game behind the Hurricanes.

Bubba Jones got rocked for third straight start, but only
avoided the loss by his teammates efforts in the 9th inning.

News and Notes: The club is reeling after its latest defeat...with Manager Clarkson no little concerned by the batting slump.

Said Clarkson---"Just one game....one game when we get 10-12 hits, and we will be OK."

What's wrong with Bubba? There are whispers in the clubhouse that Bubba is a little pre-occupied with his pending marriage. Said friend Fredric Sims---"Bubba is a great guy, and wants to do the right thing. He isn't back home to help with the arrangements, and he is very nervous about the marriage. I have met Ella Mae, his fiancee, and she is a terrific lady."

When pressed about his slump, and 4.91 ERA, Jones had this to say---"I am pressing, trying too hard. I have to know that the fellows are behind me all the way, and that I should relax and not try to strike everybody out. These are a great bunch of guys, I think we'll be OK."

Unhappy Sorry end to a sorry month!

Chicago Tribune 30 June 1931
Sports Extra

The Cubs end the month on a losing note....which
happened altogether too much this month!

The Cubs finished the month with a 12-16 record,
while Miami zoomed right past them with a 21-7 mark.

Who would have thought the Cubs could go from a 5 game
lead and the beginning of the month, to being down by 4?

There is hope, however, as Ace starter Oscar McHone comes
back to the big club tomorrow.

Cool Halfway through the season

Chicago Tribune 6 July 1931
Sports Extra

The Cubs won their last game before the All-Star break,
defeating the Boston Red Sox 6-2.

A long rain delay in the fourth did not allow the two
pitchers to finish the game....Innis for the Cubs pitched
the last four innings for a well-earned save.

Bubba Jones goes into the All-Star break with 10 wins, and
doesn't mind that wasn't selected for the mid-season classic!

Said Jones---"I'm gettin' hitched in 2 days, there would be
hell to pay if'n I was in Philadelphia playin' a ball game!"

Fredric Sims got his customary home run for his friend Bubba,
this one a 463-foot moonshot to dead centerfield. Said Fredric
after the game---"I got all of that one! I don't remember ever
hitting a longer home run!"

The Cubs did have 4 selected for the All Star Game, Krebs,
McHone, Sims, and Benning.

The Cubs have been playing reasonably well of late, and sport
a 47-34 record, 3 games back of the Miami Hurricanes.

El Dorado Courier 8 July 1931
Society and Social News Arthur H. Fitzhugh

Robert (Bubba) J. Jones was married yesterday to the former Ella Mae Jeffries, under a clear blue sky and light southerly breeze.

The ceremony, conducted by Hiram Rogers, Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, was heavily attended by the residents of this community.

The bride looked stunning in a dress of white organdy, with seed pearls covering the bodice. The full length skirt, made of satin, was overlaid with lace panels that extended behind the bride in an eight-foot train.

The reception was held at the County Co-Operative Hall, decorated by the Ladies Auxillary with white roses and silk streamers, and with tables adorned with candleabra and roses.

The spectacular 5-tier wedding cake, created by Mrs. Gladys W. Wallace, was enjoyed by all attending.

The champaign toast was given by Mr. Fredric Sims, the grooms best man, and a team mate of Roberts with the Chicago Cubs baseball organization. Also in attendance from the Chicago Cubs was the manager, a Mr. Clarkson.

The bride and groom will make their home in this area, out on Route 4.

Join me in wishing the newly-weds a long and happy marriage!

The happy couple will have their honeymoon delayed until after the end of the base ball season, and plan on a trip to Havana, Cuba.

Editor's Note:

Thanks, guys, I really appreciate it.

At this point, Bubba just won his first start after the All-Star break...(BOY O'BOY, wait till you hear about THAT!)

11 wins in 84 games is 20 or more for the year. I frankly did not expect him to be anything more than a journeyman starter. I specifically chose Bubba, due to "A" duration, "Durable" for health, and average, average for runs/hits. He has, in the words of my performance evaluations...."exceeded expectations."

The Miami ballclub is SCARY! They have 5 straight pennants, and no signs of slowing down. I looked at their roster, and they have 4 starters with avoid runs of 8 or better, and they are 31 years old and younger...looks like a dynasty to me!

The Cubs have an excellent hitting team, hitting .288 or so, with a league average around .262. They score a lot of runs, about 20 less than the league leader.

I have good talent in the minors, and am tempted to try to get another front line starter....but if I do, Bubba goes back to being the spot starter....not that he would mind

Yeah, you should have seen the wedding....I used my wife's help in that! I mean, what the heck do I know about seed pearls and bodices?

This is mad fun for me to do, thanks for indulging me.

Talking LUCKY CUBS!

Chicago Tribune 4 August 1931
Sports Extra

The Cubs dodged a bullet last night, as they beat a game
Reds team 9-8.

Bubba Jones started, and for the most part pitched well. Jones
got tired in the ninth inning....no wonder, as he had given
up 12 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 14!

Jones went to 12-8 on the year, and the Cubs remain one game
back of Miami.

Reliever Mort came in with the sacks jammed, and promptly game
up a walk, then a double to give up all three runners he
inherited. Only a fine catch in the outfield prevented a total
calamity....a game saver by Cadle in left.

The Cubs second sacker Benning was ejected in the second inning,
and was reported to have spent the remainder of the game playing
dominoes and drinking beer in the clubhouse. It is also reported
that Manager Clarkson wishes to have a talk with young Benning.

Chicago Tribune 10 August 1931
Sports Extra

Four home runs helped the Cubs to a hard-fought 6-5
win last night, keeping pace with the Miami Hurricanes
for the divisional lead.

Bubba Jones was the winner, striking out a season-high
16 Tigers in winning his 13th game.

Detroit pitcher Murray was taken out of the game early,
with a pulled bicep muscle...and will be out for about
4 weeks.

Fredric Sims crushed a home run for the fourth straight
game for the Cubs.

Cool A Brilliant Game!!!

Chicago Tribune 14 August 1931
Sports Extra

A brilliant pitching performance by Robert Jones sent
over 35 thousand Cub fans home happy last night, as
the home team defeated the Boston Red Sox 2-0.

The only runs of the game were scored on a two-run
home run by catcher Zuniga...who must also be commended
for calling such an excellent game.

Jones struck out 11 on the night, and took over the major
league lead in strikeouts, with 215.

Thumbs up A winning streak!

Chicago Tribune 19 August 1931
Sports Extra

The wind was really blowin' hard last night! Straight
out to left, and plenty strong!

There were no fewer than seven home runs hit, three in
the 8th inning to chase starter Bubba Jones.

Bubba, now 15-8, was sailing along quite nicely until
that point.

Suniga and Zuniga each hit a double and a home run for
the Cubs.

Mort, who has of late been cleaning up after Bubba, earned
his 17th save.

Game No.: 1157.

HEY! What's going on here?

Bubba's rating for avoiding runs went DOWN! To a 3!

This was right before he won his last 3 games!

This is outside my experience.....is this normal?
