BASEBALL MONTHLY October 1889 In Classic Series Brooklyn Is The Champion The World Championship is often a mixed bag to if it will live up to the expectations that everyone has going into it; in 1889 there was no such problem. The Brooklyn Bridegrooms celebrated ther fourth world championship after beating the Boston Americans four games to two. Four of the six games were decided by one run and three of the games were decided at the last at bat. Brooklyn took the first three games of the series but the Amercians didnt go easily and made quite a series of it. As we look at the recap of the series it should be noted that this was the best attended world series in baseball history. The celebrations in Brooklyn continue as the Bridegrooms are the at the pinnacle of the game of baseball that is rumored to go under transition the American Association may be a league of the past. Game 1
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Ted Kennedy Jim Burns of the Americans smoked a clutch single in the top of the 8th to tie the game off Tim Keefe who wasnt at his best. In the bottom of the ninth Dan Brouthers led off with a single and was pinch run for by Harry Lyons who stole second. Lyons then headed for third and a desperate Tido Daly threw the ball away allowing Lyons to score the easy way and take game one for Brooklyn. Game 2
WP: Tony Mullane LP: Nat Hudson This game wasnt close as the Bridegrooms scored 8 runs in the first two innings to set up a comfortable win. Fifteen hits for the home team and no errors. Ed Greer had a double and a triple that drove in four runs on the day. The Americans kept it close but a three run 8th inning sealed the deal for winner Tony Mullane. Game 3
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Ted Kennedy One of the great World Series game took a number of twists and turns. The Bridegrooms held a 4-2 lead going into the ninth inning and then poured it on. Dan Brouthers drove in two on a hit and the Americans couldnt catch the ball and fell behind 9-2. In the bottom of the ninth however those that went home early regretted it. Boston scored six runs and had the tying and go ahead runs on base with one out before Tim Keefe finally got a ground out to first while the infield was in and a fly ball out by Tom Daly who was quickly becoming the goat of the season. Game 4
WP: Nat Hudson LP: Tom Mullane This was the game where the Americans settled down and won it with ease. Brooklyn was never in this game and were winning 9-0 and showed they were in no moode to get swept. Tom Daly made up for his rough series to go 4-5 and drove in two runs while Sam Wise hit a long home run in the win. Game 5
WP: John Kirby LP: Jack Jones The Americans continued their roll scoring the first four runs in this game and looking strong behind Bob Emslie. Brooklyn showed why they are so good however and tied the game going into another wild ninth. Dummy Hoy and Dan Brouthers scored on errors and the Bridegrooms were three outs away from the championship. With two out and a runner on Tom Daly popped to the shortstop and a catch would end it all; but Billy Shindle made the error of his life and dropped the ball. Cupd Childs then doubled in two runs and the game was tied. In the 12th inning the Americans would not be denied as Darby OBrien singled in the winning run for an incredible win that sent the series back to Brooklyn. Game 6
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Ted Kennedy Ted Kennedy pitched his heart out as the Americans held a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth and a game seven appeared certain. But in the ninth everything would change as Dummy Hoy singled and Dan Brouthers tripled him in before George Van Haltren singled to cut the lead to one run with no one out. Germany Smith then made the crucial error that scored another run and tied the game as the Brooklyn fans could taste it. after an intentional walk to load the bases Tim Keefe came to the plate and batted for himself, but no hit was nessessary as a wild pitch ended the World Series and sent Ed Greer home to set a city on fire. A wonderful World Championships was decided. Top performers: Tim Keefe (3-0, 2.67 ERA) Dan Brouthers (.423, 9 RBI) George Van Haltren (.440, 5 RBI) |

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1890 Season Of Change For Chicago After 20 years of existance the Chicago White Stockings are no more. The franchise will remain the same of course but the team has changed directions after not winning the pennant last season in the National League. The White Stockings will now officially be known as the Chicago Colts. The name change seemed like the best option as the crosstown team in Chicago was known as the White Sox and confusion at all levels between the two teams including in the media and marketing was difficult. Rumors of discussions between the two owners were not comfirmed about this action, but the older National League side ultimataly made the change official. "We are now the Colts of Chicago" said team owner Elliott Mauiri, "The game is evolving and so is this franchise. We are unique and intent to remain so. The best is yet to come." Charlie ComiskeyThe team also made a change on the sideline. Harry Wright was out of his contract and the team decided not to renew it. A new man is in charge for the Colts and it is Charles Comiskey. The move is a suprize to no one as Comiskey has been in line for the job and after Chicago fell short of their goal last season, the influencial bench coach at only 30 years old is the new man in charge. In other roster moves the team bid farewell to a number of players including George Dandy Wood, Otto Schomberg and Pete Conway. The team also traded away Ned Williamson who's second stint in Chicago wasnt a successful one. Chicago did retool signing first baseman Ecky Stearns who is a .254 career hitter and has stolen 310 career bases. Billy Shindle also comes over from the world champion Bridegrooms to support Fred Dunlap who is showing his age. John Valentine is the key new arm on the team, Valentine is a player who lost 32 games as a starter in the 1883 season but since then has worked in relief and no one doubts that he has a lively arm. We shall see how Comiskey sprinkles in the new talent. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Top ten hitters in the league according to scouts:

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1890 Baseball Enters 20th Season The game of baseball has been around as long as almost anyone can remember, but this season marks a milestone and the game enters its 20th season at a profesional level. It is truly a scomplishment as the game has only grown in popularity around the country and has established itself as the first successfull spectator sport in American history. Now there are heroes like Anson and Brouthers but back in the beginning many thought the league wouldnt make it. Make it it did indeed with new stadiums specifically for the game, thousands of dollars in salaries, and plans already for subleagues to develop the game. So as the 20th season began this month, here is a recap of how the francises have done overall with Brooklyn and Philadelphia the cities with the most championships:
The best winning percentage belongs to the Boston Americans at .576 while the most overall wins belongs to Chicago with 904. The team with the most losses are the Cleveland franchise with 843. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Current standings

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1890 Comiskey Clashing With Players The Chicago Colts struggled through the second month of the season finishing three games under .500. This is another of many disapointments in recent years as the club tries to regain their championship swagger of years past. There is a cultural change for the team that isnt as easy as it seems. In the middle of the storm is new Colt manager Charlie Comiskey. Mant reports are coming out that Comiskey has alienated some of the team's players and that a divide may be building in the locker room. Not since the days of George Wright and Al Splading have there been such off field issues of significance in Chicago. "Commy" as he has become known is a harsh competitor and is all about winning. His beliefs include a disciplined life off the field to improve perfromance on it. This is includes a drinking ban during gamedays and a curfew for players on nights before games. Some players were caught at their usual places around town nights before the games and were promptly fined or rebuked. Some of the "quastionable" company of some of the players also has caught the eye of the manager. Some of the culprits were Billy Shindle and Pete Hotaling. Shindle especially is said to have had a comfrontation with Comiskey and to no one's suprize the player was traded away last month. Comiskey is even said to have butted heads with city and team favorite King Kelly. Kelly and Comiskey were said to have a closed door meeting to try and work things out. Hotaling for his part has spent most of the season on the bench. Mickey WelchFor all the theatrics the team continues to underperform on the field and the largest problem is with the pitching staff, as well as a poor defense. The team traded for 23 year old starter Harry Staley and pushed Mickey Welch to the bullpen, another move that has caused an mini uproar as Welch wants to start. The team is 7th in the league in ERA and other then John Valentine have struggled in key situations. Both Adonis Terry and Bob Black have losing records despite their talents as the Colts lead the league in errors. "Its poor discipline and concentration" says the new manager, "we will get it right or continue to move players and personel." Bill SweeneyIn the division standings the Boston Beaneaters are back on top after a long long drought. Bill Sweeney has been heroic on the mound and the team that hasnt won since the 70's is coming back to life. The New York Giants are also in the mix for a pennant race for the first time in their history causing quite a stir. Chicago Stats:

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1890 Finally A Winner In The Big Apple The city of New York has long been known as the largest and best in many walks of life including population, finances, entertainment, and opportunity. This trend however has never carried over to the popular game of baseball that has been a part of the big city since 1882. Even more frustrating for most of the New York area is their close neighbors from Brooklyn have long established themselves as royalty in the game, making the rest of the hotbeds like Manhattan, Harlem, Queens, and the Bronx green with envy. After a long stretch of not winning and seemingly always being out of the pennant race, the New York Giants are having a season that thus far has captured the headlines. The Giants sit in first place three months into the season for the first time and have the best record in the game at 48-33. The Giants lead the National League by 3.5 games and even though there is a long summer to go before we decide a champion; even to be contending is finally something New Yorkers can embrace. The club is first in the league in batting average at .281 and has been knocking the ball around the Polo Grounds all season. Although Orator Schaffer is the 38 year old fan favorite who can still hit when healthy, the real stars of the lineup are Mike Tiernan (.311, 64 RBI, 40 SB) and Lace Cross (.327, 64 RBI); leadoff man Walt Wilmot also has contributed 40 stolen bases to a team that has stolen 216 bags already, by far first in the league. Mike TiernanOn the mound Lee Viau is the hard luck man who can be considered the ace. Viau is only 23 but leads the team in most throwing catagories including wins (12), ERA (2.35) and strikeouts (79). Pitching is by far not the strongest attrubute of this team, but getting key outs with good defense has worked so far. Is the excitement all for naught? Fans and pundits continue to flock to see this team play and just the fact that New York is on the baseball map again can only be considered a very good thing. Colts Continue to Suffer and Slide Charlie Comiskey has really run out of options it seems as the Chicago Colts dropped 10 games under .500 and are nowhere near the team many had hoped they would be. This month the team owner met privately with the team and the manger in hopes of correcting the teams ails that have infiltrated all parts of the club. The team has the worst ERA in the league at 3.28 and all this despite having who many consider the best pitcher in the game with Bob Black. Still the losses keep on mounting, starter Harry Staley is only 2-7 since joining the team and his overall record has dropped to 5-16. No doubt that age has caught up to the bats in the lineup as the Colts have shown great loyalty to many of their players like Fred Dunlap and Pete Hotaling. A long summer awaits but reports remain that the managrial position held by young Charlie Comiskey is not at risk. -------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1890 The Mystery Of Bob Black ![]() Call the fans of Chicago fickle if you like, but ace pitcher Bob Black isnt having the most comfortable season pitching on the mound for the Colts. Black did win the Pitcher of the Year award last season and remains talent blessed with an excellent fastball as well as a deceptive screwball. Still Bob Black has begun to hear the whistles and boos at the West Side Ground for one simple reason, the team doesnt win consistently when he takes the hill. Black has been accused of not getting his teamates to play for him and fails to make the big pitch when he needs to. This season Black with all his talents is only 16-16 and has a career high 2.79 ERA. Some question his effort on the mound, is he always tuned in or does he pitch when he feels like it? No one can really explain why Black had his best seasons in Boston and since joining Chicago last season his ERA has steadily climbed. One source close to the team said that Black "just isnt a leader" and that "his teamates havent really taken him in to their circle in the clubhouse". Black went 4-3 this month with an eyeopening 3.57 ERA and is a big contributor to why the Colts have greatly disapointed again this season sitting a long 10 games back heading into the final two months of the season. Here is a look at the career line of Bob Black including his seasons in Boston which remain some of the most dominant the game has ever seen, why not the same when in the Windy City?
Stump Wiedman back in Chicago ![]() Pitcher Stump Wiedman has come back to Chicago to play for the Colts. Chicago again is looking to improve on a pitching staff that still has the higest ERA in the National League. Wiedman was acquired from the first place New York Giants in place of Jim Brennan who was not seeing much time at catcher with Billy Earle and King Kelly dominating the position. Wiedman played in two and a half seasons for Chicago winning 28 games including a 15-10 record in 1885. Wiedman of course was also a member of the 1884 championship team. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1890 Young Talent On Display In Sour Season With Cap Anson suffering the first major injury of his long career this month after the star broke his fibula running the bases, the Chicago Colts have given the right to a new regime to contribute. The Colts remain a distant ten games out of first place although they did manage to turn their record into a winning one after a 17-10 month. "Its too little too late" said manager Charlie Comiskey, "but we do have some young lads on this team that we are excited about." Harry StaleyOn top of this list is young pitcher Harry Staley. Chicago needs nothing more then it needs a dependable winning pitcher and at the age of 23 Staley has shown grand improvement. The 23 year old has won 14 games this season with a 2.24 ERA, the best on the team even better then Bob Black. Staley has excited fans and coaches and was rewarded this month as the team committed their future to him with a sparkling new three year deal. At catcher Billy Earle has taken a chunk of playing time from often injured King Kelly. Earle is putting it together this season with a .310 average and 68 big RBI. Earle also plays well defensively and with Kelly turning 33 soon, many wonder what clear direction the Colts will do with the position. Of course everyone knows about Billy Hamilton who is still only 24 years old and his skills can not be disputed even though he has had a relative down year with his .302 average. Marty Sullivan although 27, still has alot of good years ahead of him and has shown much in his first year in Chicago (.266, 4, 61) Finally Jocko Halligan at only 21 has had an up and down year but still will likely have a giant career. Halligan has 68 RBI this season and his .257 average should only improve in time. So the message to Chicago fans is one of optimism, still with a number of aging faces still on the roster and the offseason quickly approaching, much drama may be at hand. Pennant Races As Hot As Ever The pennant races havent slowd down one bit but the biggest news in the league is the run the Brooklyn Brdegrooms have put together over the last couple of months. Who else but the Bridegrooms could do such a thing? The team has gone 37-19 in the last two months and have overtaken the Giants for a two game lead going into Septemeber. The old stars remain in Tim Keefe and Dan Brouthers but new stars like starter Jack Jones (28-17, 2.58) has been the real diffrence. The Giants havent given up yet but the pressure may be getting to them. New York hasnt seen a pennant race before and although the Giants have been leading the division for most the season, but the pressure may be getting to them as most expect the royal Bridegrooms as they have been called to take charge. More of the same in the Amercian Association. The Detroit Tigers have been on a surge and lead the division by a single game over the Cleveland Spiders. Starter Alex Voss along with John Murphy have combined for 47 wins between them and the teams 19-9 record in August has put them on top. Along with the Spiders wait the Boston Americans who are only two games out and are hot in their own right. The Amercians are led by star Mike Griffin who may be slowly becoming among the best in the game. The 25 year old is pitched around constanbtly and has 82 RBI. Mike GriffinThe finish in both leagues coming down the stretch should be absolutely fantastic which is what baseball can do in the month of September. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1890 The Best Keep Getting Better Every pennant race is a diffrent story and takes on a life of its own, such was the case again in 1890. However when the chips are down and the races get tense it us usually the experianced side that has been there before that prevails. In 1890 the Brooklyn Bridgegrooms once again proved this theory to be true and had a second half of the season that will be remembered for a long time. The Bridegrooms went 46-21 in the second half of the season and overtook the upstart New York Giants who felt the pressure of the race for the very first time. Brooklyn surged down the stretch of the season as both teams were tied at the top of the National League with one week remaining. Brooklyn went 6-2 in their last eight including a sweep of Boston while the Giants were 3-4 in their last week handing the Bridegrooms their 5th pennant and another trip to the Series. Rob Taylor the Giants manager was downcast but encouraged by his team, "We won 88 games and were there til the end." he said, "our guys and our fans will grow from this and we expect to go the distance next season. We are confident of this." Jumping Jack Jones went 33-18 for the Brooklyn team while Tip Oneil drove in 105 runs on the season. Dan Brouthers batted .347 but lost his first batting title in four seasons to Hugh Duffy of Boston. The Bridegrooms head to the World Series not only as defending champions, but also never having lost the series in their five trys. They won 90 games for the first time in franchise history. Tigers Win their First! In great contrast to Brooklyn the other participant in the World Series will be a team that is making it there for the very first time. The Detroit Tigers also had to come a long way to catch the front running Cleveland Spiders and claim their title. The Tigers went 44-24 in the seocond half and won 7 of their last 10 win out. Detroit ended with the best record in baseball. It is no coincedence that Deacon White is part of this team. White at 42 years of age is the template for a winner and once again has played a huge role in helping a team get over the hump. White did suffer an injury in September and might miss the championship but his leadership on and off the field this season was vital again. White is part of a record 7th team to win a pennant. Buck Ewing is the current star of this team but Billy Nash is a true MVP candidate this season having batted .340 while driving in 92 runs. Fans await as Nash will go head to head against Brouthers in the Series. Billy NashSo it is a team that knows all about winning against a young and able team that is there for the first time. All experts expect the Bridegrooms to win again, but the action and drama remains to be viewed by thousands on the field of play. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Chicago Colts finished the season 77-77 and here is the final stats for the 1890 season:

BASEBALL MONTHLY October 1890 Tigers Shock Brooklyn For Title ![]() The celebrations and parties continue at this printing on the streets of Detroit as the local Tigers have brought the first championship to the midwestern city.
The Tigers upset what many considered the best team on the planet and they did it fairly easily. Detroit had the best record in the game in the regular season and behind the outstanding arm of Charley Radbourn who won three of the four games against Brooklyn. This marked the first time that Brooklyn has lost a championship series, and the energy and enthusiasm that the Tigers showed in this series really shined through. The game has a fresh new champion and experts wonder how they did it and how this series wasnt more competitive. A recap: Game 1
Behind Charley Radbourn the Tigers come out on top in the opener at home. Dan Brouthers was held hitless and Billy OBrien drove in three runs against Tom Keefe. Radbourn was the man of the game though as he would set the tone for the series. Game 2
As sloppy a game as one could imagine as the teams combined for 17 errors and 22 runs. Alex Voss labored and the Bridegrooms broke out to a 9 run lead early. George Van Haltren when 4-5 and scored three runs while John Grim went 4-6. Brooklyn was in control for the duration of this game and evened the series heading back east. Game 3
A blowout as the Tigers retake control of the series again behind Charley Radbourn. Tim Keefe showed his age allowing 9 earned runs in the contest Phil Tomney went 4-6 and drove in four runs and the Tigers combined for 17 hits to stun the capacity Brooklyn crowd. The message sent in this game would resonate for the rest of the series. Game 4
The Brooklyn defense crumbled again as they commited 6 errors and let this crucial game slip away. Jack Jones was the hard luck loser as his defende commited three of those errors on the third inning when the Tiger plated three. Alex Voss wasnt great allowing 12 hits but was good enough when he had to be and the Tigers now stood a game away. Game 5
A historic Sunday in Brooklyn as a new champion was crowned. Buck Ewing went 4-5 and scored three runs as the Tigers opened up a 6-0 lead against who else but Tim Keefe. The proud Bridegrooms fought back and scored four runs in the 8th to cut the lead to one. But Charley Radbourn struck out the last two men he faced in perfect ninth inning and the dream was reality for the Detroit Tigers. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1891 The Saddest Day In Franchise History ![]() Few would argue who the best player on the Chicago Colts is. Cap Anson may be the most senior but it is the legs and ability of Billy Hamilton that the team depends on. Not only is Hamilton the most talented player, but his attitude and humble personality enamored him to fans and teamates. Billy will not be taking the field again. Hamilton suffered an ankle injury at the end of last season but the club kept the nature of the injuru quiet. Only those close to the club knew that it was very serious as Hamilton tore numerous ligaments in his ankle. Rumors were spreading however when Hamilton was seen on crutches months after the season was over around town. Unfortunately there is no medical repair available and the 25 year old player will actually spend much of the rest of his life with a limp. The beauty of seeing Hamilton run the bases will be but a memory. "Its the saddest day our franchise has ever seen" said Cap Anson about this news."Billy was family to all of us and not having him there will hurt." Manager Charlie Comiskey was especially distraught, "you may see talent like his once every 20 years. We wont be the same team without him." Running was something he could do better then anyone else. In his 465 game career Hamilton stole 204 bases and scored 423 runs. Hamilton also possessed one of the best eyes in the game, he walked 430 times in his career including 148 last season. Hamilton also had a career average of .334 Word spread quickly through the league that Hamilton had announced his retirement and shock soon followed. Dan Brouthers of the Bridegrooms said of him, "he changed the way players run the bases. He was the smoothest player I have ever seen." Hamilton himself tried to stay upbeat in his few comments to the press. He also said he felt a little weird, "I feel like I died or something. Dont bury me yet, baseball isnt everything." Hamilton gave no comment about if he planned on staying in the game in some capacity. Colts React; Let Bob Black Go The Colts moved on in a big way after the news of Billy Hamilton's career ending. Chicago went out and signed what may be considered the best pitcher in the game in Charlie Geggus. Geggus has a 1.50 ERA and has struck out 1671 men in 8 seasons. Geggus is expected to take the place of Bob Black who did walk away from the team and went back home to Boston where he had his glory days. Geggus is a big name talent and Chicago tied him down for an incredible 7 year contract. Chicago also signed big name freeagent Oyster Burns. Burns is a .283 career hitter and was among the leaders on the Reds roster. Billy Sunday also signed with the club that originally drafted him. Sunday hopes he can help fill some of the void left by Hamilton with his 401 career stolen bases. The Colts did let go of some big time names that were part of the teams last championship. Gone is Pete Hotaling, Fred Dunlap, and Adonis Terry. Finally the Colts traded Tom Gettingger for pitcher Phenominal Smith who may make a run at the rotation. Chicago 1891 Roster:

BASEBALL MONTHY April 1891 The Pioneer Of the Mound Retires ![]() In an official press release to the media, starting pitcher Al Spalding has ended his playing career after failing to get an invitation for from a pro club this season. Spalding leaves behind a pitching career that hasnt been matched by anyone, not only for his efforts on the field but in his influence off the field to make the game as successful as it has now become. Spalding leaves as the all time leader in wins (348), games started (663), complete games (502), shutouts (27), innings pitched (5787), and VORP (591). Spalding also won pitcher of the year 3 times and won two world championships. Spalding played 7 seasons in Baltimore, 8 seasons in Chicago, two years in Cleveland, and one year in Brooklyn and Boston. Overall Spalding pitched for 20 seasons having started in the inaguaral season on 1871. Spalding had an indweling influence on the game including in its promotion. Spalding was even part of a group that took the game to England in 1878. Spalding of course was a huge part of the innovation in the equipment of the game including the ball, gloves, and catchers mask. No player has had similar influence in the front office as well as in the clubhouse as did Al Spalding. "The time is right" Spalding added in his statement, "Life has alot more to offer but I am still deeply interested in the progression of the game." Rumors that Spalding will be part of an organization soon are quickly spreading. After all who wouldnt want to have him on their side? Still for the moment fans and people in the game take a minute to appreciate the accomplishments of the first real superstar to leave the game. Geggus off to Strong Start but Colts Are Not Charlie Geggus proved why Chicago invested so much in his arm as he won the pitcher of the month award and came out strong for the Colts. Geggus went 7-1 and pitched two shutouts along with his league leading 53 strike outs. Charlie GeggusGeggus however turned out to be just about the only bright spot the team has seen. The club went 12-13 in the month and beyond Geggus is looking for someone to step up on the mound. Harry Staley has been ok but it was Phenominal Smith who really hurt the team as the third starter. Smith went 0-4 in the month with an 8.84 ERA; little could be said to explain that. The offense has stutered as expected without Billy Hamilton. The Colts are 6th in the league in batting and unless something changes quickly, could be in for another long dreary season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1891 The Void Cant Be Fillied Two months into the new season and few teams have barely found their identity much less given anything up. This version however of the Chicago Colts has a different feel to it all together. The proud franchise is most likely suffering its most difficult stretch ever. The team has a record of 25-29 and sit 12 games out of first place already. It is not only the record however, the team doesnt seem to compete or really have much of a chance against the better sides in the league like first place Boston or even Brooklyn or Pittsburgh. The team over everything is last in baseball in hitting with a .227 average, the worse average the franchise has ever seen at this stage of the season. The void of Billy Hamilton cant be understated. It is one thing if you expect the star player to come back soon from an injury, and it is another thing all together to know he wont be coming back at all. Stars like Cap Anson whom everyone looks up to are trying to keep the team focused, but age is showing for old Pops who at 37 years old is batting only .248. But Anson isnt the only one; other players are faring even worse as Oyster Burns bats .208 or Bill Eagen .199. The team has 5 home runs total and only 52 stolen bases. The 209 runs scored is also last in the league. The pitching isnt a whole lot better and many feel Charles Comiskey is doing wonders with this side to have them only four games under .500. Charlie Geggus is truly the only bright spot on the team as the new pitcher dominated the league again winning an incredible 15 games in two months and winning pitcher of the month acclaims. The Colts hope to get much needed help in the upcoming June amatuer draft.

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1891 Changes Rise; Colts Swoon "The action on the field isnt very entertaining at all" said a man leaving the ball park this month while another young lad simply said it best, "these guys stink!" Charlie Comsiskey and the Chicago Colts continued their slide down the National League standings this momth after finishing June with a 8-18 record. The Colts fell to 14 games out of first place and are very close to joining the Cincinnati Reds as the worse team in the league. No one on the team is batting over .300 and other then Charlie Geggus who has already won 20 games, more then half of the teams overall wins, the pitching has not been any better. The Colts did start making changes to their side. Billy Sunday's second stint with the club came to an abrupt end as the leadoff man was traded out of town. Sunday was shipped to Baltimore for second baseman Hub Collins who comes in hoping to shore up the infield. Collins is a career .268 hitter but is very good with his glove. Hadry Richardson had his contract extended as the left fielder, although advanced in age seems to be the only one willing to hit and be a factor on the field. Next the team dove right into the June amatuer draft and chose 21 year old prospect Nig Cuppy. Cuppy is from nearby Logansport Indiana and is the first player drafted by the team that was born after the franchise was established. Much is expected from the young man who was given no time to develop but thrown right into the Chicago rotation. Nig CuppyShowing flashes of skill the young man did get hit hard on occasion. He made 5 starts going 0-4 but holding a respectable 3.21 ERA. He has only struck out one man however. Production is needed desperately from the club as they can ill afford another busted young prospect. More changes are sure to follow. The press suprozingly have been very kind to Charlie Comiskey. Comiskey does have numerous friends in the media and is such a pure Chicago man that few if anyone is shifting the blame or is even talking about a change at the top. There have been some slight rumors of a return by Al Spalding to the front office since he is looking to get back into the game since his retirement. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Top Picks June Amatuer Draft
As usual the top picks were all starting pitchers with Pittsburgh taking a chance on yet another arm, one would think after so many years that they would get it right this time with George Cobb. Lew Camp is all power for Louisville with the 8th pick. Finally a little known young talent names Willie Keeler will be joining the Washinton Statesmen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1891 A New Fire Lit In the Dark ![]() The 1891 Baseball season still has two long months to go but at the current time it appears that the Lousville Colonels and the Boston Beaneaters are on a collision course for the championship. In the meantime the rest of the league looks for posotives as they move forward and start to build for the future. Someone once said that "baseball is a patient man's game." The Chicago Colts are in such a pickle as their season was lost a long time ago. The team however for the first time in a long time have ended a month with a winning record and is back to playing some good baseball. Changes continued for the organization in July and a number of new faces and new confidence may just be beggining to bloom. Starting pitcher Nig Cuppy is finally starting to come around and when the young man takes the mound he has a new confidence. Cuppy was drafted in June and was thrown right into the profesional game with little experiance. After going 0-4 in June, Cuppy went 5-4 in July and still has his ERA at a respectable 3.36. "Control remains his biggest challange right now" said team ace Charlie Geggus who seems to have taken the young man under his wing. "He is a kid that learns well and is willing to work." Charlie Geggus (25-12)Geggus himself is having a record setting season having won 25 games before August 1st, dreams of the 37 win major league record have also been thought of but unlikely. Chicago traded middle reliever Fitzgerald for left fielder Jimmy McAleer from the Louisville club. McAleer who has been known a the "loafer" is quite a change for the team. McAleer quickly met with his teamates and was vocal about the way he has found things with his new team. The press is saying that McAleer has challanged his teamates to play to their capabilities and to be more like the winning club he had just left. Jimmy can be seen being vocal on the field and encouraging his mates at every turn of a game. He is a voice of fire that the team seems to have been lacking for quite some time. McAller also is said to have a good sense of humor, and told the press recently, "I wont tolerate any loafing from these guys", he said with a smile, "Im the only loafer on this team!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1891 Colts Defenseless The Chicago Colts went 13-15 in the month of August and looked to close out their season with some posotive results especially from some of their young talents like Nig Cuppy and Billy Earle. Still Chicago who expects to win every year looks back now for reasons that might explain another losing season. The answer for many who have watched this team play is obvious; the Colts are the worse defensive team in the league by a large margin. Chicago has commited 516 errors in their 136 games this season, that is 151 more errors then the team with the best defense, the New York Giants. To add to this Chicago is last in the league in assists (1709) and ZR rating (-19.2). Ecky Stearns and Hardy Richardson are considered among the poorest fielders around. Numerous games have been blown because of a lack or ability to field the ball even on the most routine of plays. "Its just something we never have emphasized in the past and now I think we are paying for it" said Cap Anson when asked about the defenisve struggles. "Years ago no one was really playing solid defense so it all evened out, now you have to play well with the glove to win." Chicago is scouting hard to improve in the area but the slickest of fielders are not easy to come by. In other team news Charlie Geggus continues to have an impressive season and the hurler leads the league in most pitching catagories. Geggus has a chance to have one of the winningest seasons of all time as he has recorded 31 wins already. He also leads the league in innings pitched (424), strike outs (339) and VORP (103.2). World Series Almost set Never have we seen pennant races so one sided then what we have seen in 1891. Both the Boston Beaneaters and the Louisville Colonels are on a collision course to the World Series. Each team is leading their league by over ten games and have an equal magic number of 9. The Beaneaters havent been to the championship game since 1879 while the Colonels go back after being there as losers in 1888. Both teams are already preparing for the matchup as train rides and motel rooms are already booked in both areas for early October. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1891 World Series Preview The 1891 World Series has been set for a long time now as both participants have clinched their pennants close to two weeks before the end of the season. With the extra time before the championship is actually played for, the hype for the matchup has reached a fever pitch.
The excitment in Boston cant be curtailed and their original franchise, after years of futilty, are back in the Series. The Boston Beaneaters had been overshadowed by their younger neighbors the Americans in recent years but the Beaneaters put it all together and amassed the most wins in a baseball season will 99. The Beaneaters had the lowest ERA in the game at 2.01 and are led by ace Bob Black who made his first season in Boston one to remember. Black is proving the critics wrong who said he wasnt a winner by earning 27 games. Black was joined by another 20 game winner Bill Sweeney who won 29 in fact. The duo makes the Beaneaters so difficult to play in any series. The Boston offense is also first in the league. Sir Hugh Duffy leads the charge with a .309 average and 105 RBI. Along with Duffy is catching superstar Jocko Milligan who drove in 85 runs and batted .285. No doubt that manager Steve Denton relies more on his pitching then his hitting and that Boston doesnt need a whole lot of support to win games. On the other side of the dugout will be the Colonels from Louisville. One of the best managers in the game, Cipriano Caneles, leads this team and is looking to manage his 5th team to a title. The team has stellar pitching as well with two aces, none bigger then Ed Dugan. Dugan went 28-13 with a 1.88 ERA and has been so dependable for so long with Cincinnati meant so much in his first year with his new team. Young Cannonball Weyhing is the other star who won 27 games and has obviously reached his prime. Ed DuganThe Lousville offense is well balanced with no one over .300 and not a single man over 80 RBI. Germany Long is a star in the game and batted .287 while strking out only 6 times all season. Catcher Joe Crotty had 11 home runs this season second in the league and the Colonels as a team 46 home runs which was tops in the league. Boston will have the home field advantage and the best of seven series is sure to put on display some great performances, especially on the mound. Most of the experts still are choosing Boston to win their first championship since 1874. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Final Standings
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chicago Promises Big Changes Charlie Comiskey and the Chicago Colts finished the second half of the season with a winning record but still fell a full 26 games behind the league winning Boston team. The team and its front office are sure to make big changes this offseason with King Kelly appearing to be among the biggest names to be gone. Kelly and his workethic of late have been a concern on the team, and the production for the catching star has been slipping. King KellyFinal Chicago Stats 1891
