The idea and format I came up with on my own, but the process is actually very simple.

I just start a historical league for a season I want to pick a team from. I then import the other historical team I would like to use and place it into that year. Then I play exhibition matches tweaking the teams as I want in commisioner mode.

Worked out well so far.

Dodgers Pull Of Win In Instant Classic

Sometimes when a series starts or a matchup finally takes shape the actual perfromace on the field doesnt match the hype. In the opening night of this series between the 94 Expos and the 63 Dodgers this theory definately wasnt in effect. Fans and everyone involved enjoyed one of the best played ballgames you could ever see, a 16 inning drama game that only the game of baseball can provide.

Sandy Koufax is dominant anyway you look at him. Still when Marquis Grissom took him deep to open the game before the Dodger fans could settle in, one had to wonder. Grissom waited on a curve ball and made it count with a nice long shot.

Ken Hill knew the challange going in of facing Koufax and took it well. The Dodger did tie the game in the 3rd inning when Willie Davis stole 3rd base and scored on a sharp ground out by Tommy Davis. After the game was tied at three then the fun began.

Koufax and Hill went into high gear throwing inning after inning of strong ball, it seemed as the innings wore on, the hitters got weaker and the pitchers stronger. After 9 innings Hill had had enough and did all he could do, being pulled by Felipe Alou, but Koufax stayed in.

Koufax would go through 10 innings striking out 10 and staying even sharper then anyone thought he would be. The game went to the bullpens but still no team wanted to take the advantage. In fact there were nly three hits total between innings 11 and 15.

In the 16th Tim Scott came on for the Expos. With one out Frank Howard singled and Ron Fairly walked. Gil Heredia came on in relief to get out of the jam. Doug Camili flied out and with 2 down Johnny Roseboro came to the dish.

Foul Ball
Ball one
Ball two
Line drive walk off home run to right field!

The Dodgers had done it in their own way, allowing an incredible one run in 16 innings. The game was a classic and even though this was only game 1, it seems like these teams have been playing forever.

"We are hoping this kind of a win affects their minds" said Maury Wills, "Its the kind of game you dont forget."

Repeat Drama as Dodgers Break Expos Hearts Again

Another instant classic at Dodger Stadium in game two of this best of 5 series as both these teams have battled it out with everything they had in the first two games. The result also has been the same as the Dodgers were able to win once again in dramatic walk off fashion, this time Jim Gilliam walk off blast in the bottom of the 12th.

Don Drysdale and Pedro Martinez lived up to all the hype and exepectation with a great duel on the mound. Both were masters of their craft and had hitters chasing wind, Pedro struck out 11 and Drysdale 8.

The Expos took the lead in the 7th inning to break a scoreless game but in the bottom of the 8th, Johnny Roseboro hit a two run bomb off og Pedro to give the Dodgers the lead and left it to Drysdale to close it out.

In the top of the ninth however Drysdale let up a leadoff homerun by Larry Walker and in dramatic fashion the game was tied. The emotional roller coater continued to ride as this series took yet another turn.

Martinez was pulled after the 9th and Drysdale took things all the way through the 10th.

After John Wetteland took things ever farther, in the 12th Tim Scott came on in relief and just didnt have his best stuff. Ron Fairly singled to right and then John Gilliam came to the plate. On an 0-1 pitch Gilliam ended Game 2 just like game 1 ended, with a long drive home run to right field.

"These have truly been two of the best games I have ever played in," said Willie Davis.

The series goes to Canada now and the Dodgers, although exhausted will be going for the sweep, one thing is for sure that they wont have their third walk off in a row.

Dodgers and Podres Sweep North of the Border

The emotional drain of the first two games of this series was sure to take a toll on both teams in game 3 of this series. Still on a rare occasion Olympic Sradium was actually sold out and load as the 94 Expos finally try to get a win and avoid the sweep.

On this day Johnny Podres would make sure the home team wouldnt be successful.

Podres went seven strong innings allowing 8 hits but no runs to the Expos, he also struck out six in the process. The Dodgers are all about the pitching and the bullpen came on for the final two innings and did not allow a hit much less a run to preserve the clinching shutout. Pete Richert registered the final three outs of the series.

Jeff Fassero got the call from Felipe Alou in this desperate game. Much like the other games the lefthander battled hard but just couldt get any run support before he started to tire. In fact the game was still scoreless going into the 8th inning. That is when yet another long ball made its mark for the Dodgers, this time from Hondo Frank Howard. Howard hit a two out clutch 3 run home run when his team needed it the most stunning the Expos in the late inning again, and flooring the capacity crowd.

Ron Fairly would add another one in the 9th for good measure, his second of the series, and the Dodgers needed all the insurance they needed. Yes in the end the series was a sweep, but the manner in which games 1 and 2 were played out west will leave an impression on just how close things really were.

But great teams are great when they need to be, and the Dodgers had the big plays down the stretch in all three of the games played.

1906 Chicago Cubs vs 1968 Detroit Tigers

1968 Detroit Tigers
Record: 103-59
Finish: Won World Series over St. Louis
Manager: Mayo Smith
Ball Park: Tiger Stadium
Runs scored: 671
Runs allowed: 492
Team AVG: .235
Team ERA: 2.71
Home Runs: 185
Key Players: Willie Horton OF (.285, 36, 85), Denny Mcclain SP (31-6, 1.96, 280), Bill Freehan C (.263, 25, 84)

A team that only batted .235 isnt really suppose to win, but this Tiger bunch was led by a great pitching staff that was the flavor of the era in which they played. Denny Mcclain had one of the best seasons on the mound in the modern era as the Tigers as a staff were murder on batters. The offense could burn you with the long ball, they almost hit 200 homer runs in hitter friendly Tiger Stadium; playing home games in such a park makes the pitching numbers even more impressive.

1906 Chicago Cubs
Record: 116-36
Finish: Won NL Pennant; lost World Series to Chicago White Sox
Manager: Frank Chance
Ball Park: West Side Park
Runs scored: 704
Runs allowed: 381
Team ERA: 2.70
Team AVG: .262
Home Runs: 20
Key Players: Mordecai Brown P (26-6, 1.04), Harry Steinfeldt 3B (.327, 3, 83), Frank Chance 1B (.319, 3, 71, 103 R)

Maybe the greastest regular season in baseball history by this team that almost doubled their opponents in runs and lost only 36 games all season. The Cubs were upset in the World Series but Three Finger Brown and a very scrappy bunch didnt like to lose. Look for the series with the Tigers to be close and low scoring and the MccLain/Brown pitching matchup should be fascinating.

Only Three Fingers Needed

Detroit - The series opener at Tiger Stadium as expected saw a very good pitching matchup between Denny McClain and Three Finger Brown. Both pitchers in the prime of their careers and brimming with confidence would go the distance on the mound combining for 17 strikeouts and only 3 runs allowed.

In the end its was Three Finger Brown who earned the win for the 06 Chicago Cubs by a slim scoreline of 2-1.

The battle was scoreless in the bottom of the 5th when Dick Tracewski came through with a two out since that Al Kaline scored on just beating the throw at the plate. The Tigers could not capatalize again in the 6th inning when Kaline came up with the bases loaded but grounded into a fielders choice to end the threat and keep the slim lead.

A double by Frank Chance in the 7th set up the tying run and Chance would come around on a sacrafice fly by Johnny Kling. Kling again would be the hero in the 9th inning when he faced Mcclain with men on second and third and only one out. Kling fouled off five straight pitches before flying out deep enough to left field, to score the go ahead run.

In the 9th the Tigers got two men on base with only one out but Brown struck out Eddie Matthews and forced Jim Northup to ground out to first base to end the game.

This may be a pivotal game 1 win for Chicago who beat Detroit's best pitcher.

Tigers Right Back In It

Detroit - Coming off their tight loss in game one where the 68 Tigers played into the hands of the 06 Cubs to lose, this time the home team stuck to their pitching and defense to beat the Cubs 4-1 and even this series.

Earl Wilson did what Denny McClain could not and held a lead all the way through for a complete game win. Wilson isnt overpowering but is very hard to hit cleanly. The right hander allowed only 4 hits on the night and struck out four. After being given the lead in the 2nd inning Wilson carried the slim lead all the way until the eigth where his offsense gave him more to work with.

In the 8th catcher Bill Freehan hit a two run home run off of Cubs starter Jack Pfiester to extend the lead at Tiger Stadium and ease the nerves of the capacity crowd. Wilson refused to give up the ball in the ninth inning and went out to finish the job.

"I felt strong" he said, "and Im from the school that believes you should finish what you started."

The series now gets more interesting as it becomes a best of 3 scenario with the Cubbies getting the next two at their place. Pitching at the highest level has been on display.

Cubs Win! Kling With Walk Off

Chicago - As the series turned its story to Chicago no one would expect anything less then another dramatic battle between these two determined teams. Again pitching was on display as the Cubs cant seem to get used to the breaking stuff of the Tigers, and the Cubs are going old school on the mound, bending the rules as much as possible to get results.

The game stayed even all the way though the regular 9 innings. Ed Reulbach did the hitting for himself in the 3rd inning by hammering a pitch for a home run over the short left field fence at the West Side Grounds off of Mickey Lolich. In the fourth Mickey Stanley tripled to tie the game but the Tigers couldnt push the runner home from third, something they would regret going forward.

Both pitchers went the full nine, and both gave way in the tenth inning to the bullpens as the managers wanted fresh arms as this game 3 matchup was a crucial one. Orval Overall pitched an easy 1-2-3 10th inning and let his offense try to push one accross for the win.

Daryl Patterson came on in the 10th for the Tigers. Patterson came out wild, walking the first man and hitting the second man with a pitch. After a fielders choice Frank Chance was walked intentionally to load the bases. With the infield in, Harry Steinfeldt hit one to the short stop but the finish and force was easy at the plate. So Johnny Kling came up with the bases loaded and two out.

After a 2-1 count, Johnny Kling did something he only did 20 times in his career. Kling hit a towering shot that cleared the fence over the left field wall and the walk off grand slam was complete. The Cubs won in the most uncharactaristic way, with two long balls.

So the series now is in the lap of the Cubs who can close things out in the next Game 4 at home. Will another World Series champion be eliminated?

Chicago Cruises to Series Win

Chicago - Carrying their momentum from their dramatic walk off win in game two the 06 Chicago Cubs came out just as fired up and had an easier day then expected knocking off the 68 Tigers by a score of 9-4. The Cubbies take the series that many really expected them to, despite the facts they were not the team playing with a championship.

"I think when we beat Denny Mcclain in the opening game," said Johnny Evers, "I feel thats when we were in control, he is their best pitcher."

Carl Lundgren wasnt so bad himself on this afternoon and held the Tigers in complete check until the final two innings when the game was already well in hand. In fact Lundgren allowed only 4 hits on the day, another excellent performance on the mound for the Cubs, a trend that the Tigers suffered throughout the series.

Chicago scored 5 runs in the first two innings off of Detroit starter Joe Sparma who seemed to have trouble finding the plate early. A four run 5th inning extended the lead for the Cubs to 9-0, Harry Steinfeldt contributed with 3 RBI. Every Chicago batter got a hit on the day contributing to the most lopsided game of the series.

The late rally by the Tigers really scared no one, and the Cubs who know how to win, move on the bigger and better things.

1969 CHICAGO CUBS vs 1932 NEW YORK YANKEES

1932 New York Yankees
Record: 107-47
Finish: Won World Series over Cubs
Manager: Joe McCarthy
Home Park: Yankee Stadium
Runs scored: 1002
Runs allowed: 724
Team AVG: .286
Team ERA: 3.98
Home Runs: 160
Key Players: Babe Ruth OF (.341, 41, 137), Lou Gehrig 1B (.349, 34, 151), Tony Lazzari 2B (.300, 15, 113)

Any team that scored over 1000 runs and hits close to .290 in the modern era has to be feared. This Yankees team won 107 games and pounded almost everyone in their path, some even argue that this team was just as good as the 1927 team. The Babe leads the offense in the year in which he "called his shot", men were rarely stranded on base with this team. The pitching was led by Lefty Gomez, but wasnt the staple of this team, and didnt need to be; Gomez won 24 games with an ERA over 4.00.

1969 Chicago Cubs
Record: 92-70
Finish: 2nd place in NL East behind NY Mets
Manager: Leo Durocher
Home Park: Wrigley Field
Runs scored: 720
Runs allowed: 611
Team AVG: .253
Team ERA: 3.34
Home Runs: 142
Key Players: Ron Santo 3B (.289, 29, 123), Fergie Jenkins SP (21-15, 3.21), Billy Williams OF (.293, 21, 95)

The heartbreak Cubs led the division for most of the season before their September fall. The team does have some star power however with Ernie Banks, Jenkins, and Billy Williams. Still many wonder if this team should have even been invited to this tournament, and up against the mighty Yankees many are already talking sweep. What kind of showing will this team put forth?

Jenkins and Cubs Stun Mighty Yanks

BRONX - In a short series getting off to the rigth start could be the difference between winning and losing. The 69 Cubs were balked at as a team that had no buisiness playing with the best, but after an impressive 5-4 win in Game 1 of their series with the mighty 1932 NY Yankees, eyes and attention is starting to turn.

Yes it is only one game but the Cubs will gladly take it and think of the unthinkable in game 2. From the very first inning the visitors came out with purpose and Left Gomez showed how green he is and may have been an ambitious choice as the game 1 starter by Joe Mccarthy. Ron Santo slashed a double to open the scoring and Jim Hickman drove in another two as the Cubs went up by three runs.

Glenn Beckert secured an infield hit to plate Ernie Banks and Chicago was up by four runs with Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins determined to make it hold up, in the end the Cubs would need everyone of those runs.

Down 4-1 in the 6th inning the Babe came up with Gehrig on first. What we saw next had to be seen to be described. The Legend of Swat swung at the first fastball offering by Jenkins and oblitarated the baseball. Ruth hit a 490 foot home run to right field crevaces of Yankee Stadium. It was a monumental shot but the Cubs still held a slim lead.

Jenkins kept at it and with a man on second in the 7th he struck out Ben Chapman. Gehrig and Ruth both grounded out in the 8th and in the 9th it seemed Fergie only got stronger, never flinching with his lead, striking out Joe Sewell on thre pitches to end the game.

So now the series has taken a start no one expected, a must win for the Yanks in game 2, and a dangerous nothing to lose attitude by the beloved 69 Cubs.

Cool 14 Hit Yankees Tie Series

Bronx - Making no mistake about falling behind any farther in this series after their stunning loss in game 1, the 1932 Yankees got the job done and tied the series at 1 with a 7-3 win.

Red Ruffing and Bill Hands had ideas of a quick low scoring game in this one as each pitcher hurled the ball well in a scoreless game that headed into the 6th inning. In the 6th the tension was broken as Lou Gehrig sailed a ball over the right field porch for a two run home run and the ice was broken. A five run bottom of the 8th inning clinched the game and the big blow there was a two run triple by Ben Chapman. The Yankees ended the night with 14 hits and as the Cubbies quickly ran out of luck.

Gehrig went 3-5 on the day and Bill Dickey 4-5 as both veteran players woke up at the right time late in this one.

The series shifts over Wrigle Field now as Babe Ruth returns to the scene of the called shot. Will there be similar theatrics in Game 3, surely the Yankees would be more then content with a simple win.

Wild One At Wrigley Gets Away From Cubbies

Chicago - Despite the wind blowing in at 16 miles an hour at Wrigley Field offense was on full display as the 32 Yankees and 69 Cubs combined for 28 hits and 17 runs and in the end it was the Yanks who took the lead in the series with a 10-7 victory.

Ten pitchers were used in this game as George Pipgras and Ken Holtzman wernt really fooling anyone on the mound, but despite all the offense in this one, to everyones amazement not a single home run was hit.

New York took a 4 to zero lead when they scored two in the 5th inning capped by a Babe Ruth triple to right center scoring Lou Gherig, the big fellow shows he can still run.

Ernie Banks drove in two as the Cubs came back to score three in two innings and were within a run at the end of the 6th. But the Yankees blew the game open in the top of the 8th with a 5 run inning as Cubs pitcher Gary Ross simply lost it. Ross came in for relief duty in a tough spot and with no one else warming up Leo Derocher left things in his hands. Well Ross couldnt find the plate and walked an incredible four runs in in consecutive order. The Yankees did most of their damage without swining the bats.

Chicago came back with 4 of their own in th 8th but Wilcy Moore closed the door on the home team in an easy 9th inning to give the Yanks the edge in the series.

Glen Beckert went 5-6 on the day and played a fine game at second base but it wasnt meant to be for the Cubs today. The Yanks had three triples on the afternoon and no there was no called shot by the Babe that we can speak of.

A frustrating game for Chicago as they now have their backs against the wall.

Yankees Push Aside Cubs

CHICAGO - It always seems that it takes a great performance to knock off a great team like the 32 Yankees, but since game 1 the 69 Cubs have not been able to get this and paid the price in three straight losses, losing their second at home and the series clincher 6-1.

Lou Gehrig started the game in the best way for his team in the top of the first inning hitting a two run home run over the left field wall and calming the enthusiasm of the Cub crowd. Dick Selma appeared to show some nerves from the opening pitch.

Selma did settle down and Don Kessinger cut the Yankee lead to one run in the second inning with a hit that plated Ernie Banks. The game would remain tight until the late innings as Johnny Allen and Bill Dickey worked very well behind the plate to really handcuff the Cubs offense.

In the 8th the Yankees broke trhough again as Ben Chapman tripled in a run, the Yankees really have become a doubles and triples machine in this series. Chapman, who has an outstanding series, then drove in two more with a single in the 9th and the Yankees had a comfortable five run lead that they would carry home.

Johnny Allen allowed only 4 hits and went the distance. Maybe the best thing that happened was the Yanks dropped game 1 and it gave them incentive and a wakeup call to play their best baseball.

1994 Chicago White Sox vs 1978 New York Yankees

1978 New York Yankees
Record: 100-63
Finish: Won World Series over LA Dodgers
Ball park: Yankee Stadium
Manager: Billy Martin
Runs scored: 735
Runs allowed: 582
Home Runs: 125
Team ERA: 3.18
Team AVG: .267
Key Players: Ron Guidry SP (25-3, 1.74), Reggie Jackson OF (.274, 27, 97), Rich Gossage CL (10-11, 2.01, 27 SV)

A dysfunctional group only the Yankees put together somehow found a way to bring it all home and become legends. The team didnt get along but had talent all over led by the incredible season of Ron Guidry on the mound. Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson were to of the best clutch hitters the game saw during this era and one thing the Yanks knew how to do was win. Expect big egos and big results with this team, George would want nothing less.

1994 Chicago White Sox
Record: 67-46
Finish: First in AL West before strike ended season
Ball Park: US Cellular Field
Manager: Gene Lamont
runs scored: 633
runs allowed: 498
home runs: 121
Team ERA: 3.96
Team AVG: .287
Key Players: Frank Thomas 1B (.353, 38, 101), Julio Franco DH (.319, 20, 98), Robin Ventura 3B (.282, 18, 78)

History will never know just how far or how good this team could have been. The lineup was good at everyspot and was led by the Big Hurt Frank Thomas, who was at the prime of his career, this team had it all in speed, power and defense. Black Jack Mcdowell was helped by the two young arms of Wilson Alvarez and Alex Fernandez in the rotation. This Sox team was a handful for any opposition.

Pitching matchups
Game 1 at Yankee Stadium: Jack McDowell (10-9, 3.73) vs Ron Guidry (25-3, 1.74)
Game 2 at Yankee Stadium: Wilson Alvarez (12-8, 3.45) vs Ed Figueroa (20-9, 2.99)
Game 3 at US Cellular Field: Catfish Hunter (12-6, 3.58) vs Alex Fernandez (11-7, 3.86)

Yankees Take Opener Over Sloppy Sox

NEW YORK - The 1978 Yankees took the opening game of the series against the 94 White Sox by a final score of 4-2. There were no long home runs or dramatics for the winning side as they won "ugly" and did what they had to do against Chicago.

"It wasnt a pretty game" said Reggie Jackson, "but if folks want pretty, then tell them to look at me instead."

The White Sox were their own worst enemy in this one by commiting three errors, two by sub Norberto Martin that gave the Yankees chances. Jack McDowell was also in a giving mood on the mound, Trader Jack wlaked six men on the night and although he wasnt hit much, paid the price for his lack of control. Still Gene Lamont stuck with Mcdowell for the entire game.

To no one's suprize Frank Thomas drove in both Chicago runs including a long one in the 8th off Ron Guidry. Guidry was good on the mound and has to be happy with his performance and the win. Goose Gossage closed the door in th 9th despite allowing the go ahead run to come to the plate.

Willie Randolph had two hits including a run as the Yanks had no extra base hits but still come away with the win. In order to beat a championship side like this, the White Sox will have to shore the little things up.

Alvarez Crafts Shutout in White Sox Win

New York - The 1994 Chicago White Sox bounced right back after missing numerous chances in game one of their series with the 78 Yankees. The guile and pitching stuff of Wilson Alvarez was just what they needed as they tied the series in the Bronx by shutting out the Yanks 5-0.

Julio Franco on the offensive end had Yankee starter Dick Tidrow's number as drove in three runs including a two run single in the 5th inning. The White Sox plated 4 in the inning as the presence of Frank Thomas in the lineup is giving other Sox hitters good pitches to hit. Tim Raines and Lance Johnson combined to go 4-9 on the night including three stolen bases between them.

The story of the night however was Alvarez who had a nasty curveball going and had great movement on his fastball. Lou Piniella did go 3-5 but Alvarez had 8 strikeouts and there was never a thought of pulling out the left hander from this game, as he went the distance with ease. The White Sox have yet to use their bullpen in the first two games.

"We are confident going back home" said Frank Thomas who walked twice tonight, "they like to do alot of talking, but we are here to play and win the games."

Catfish Hunter will get the call in Chicago as home field advantage has now gone to the Sox as the pivotal game three looms.
