1889 End of June: National League & American Association
![]() Despite losing 2 of their top offensive threats in Fred Dunlap and Billy Hamilton, the Giants are still slugging their way to victories behind players like Mike Tiernan, Fred Mann, and Dave Orr. All that hitting makes it alot easier for pitchers like Harry Salisbury to dominate hitters. That's what he has done this year going 16-4 with a 2.65 ERA. The Chicago White Stockings only trail by 5.5 games with plenty of the season left. With a 1-2 pitching tandem like Daisy Davis and Jumbo McGinnis, the White Stockings are nowhere near out of the race. Meanwhile, the Boston Beaneaters are now a place that no player wants to be at this time. It seems Cap Anson knew what he was doing when he went on his tirade to get traded from the team over a year ago. Rumors have it that King Kelly wants to be traded off the team, veteran George Hall may call it quits after this season, and Hugh Duffy wants a do-over on his 2-year contract he signed with the club this offseason. Batting Leaders BA: Mike Tiernan (NYG) .391 Hits: Jake Beckley (PIT) 79 2B: Abner Dalrymple (CLV) 19 3B: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 11 HR: Emmett Seery (CHN) 5 RBI: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 46 Runs: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 53 SB: Bob Petit (WHS) 34 Pitching Leaders ERA: Pete Conway (WHS) 2.10 Wins: Harry Salisbury (NYG) 16 Losses: Amos Rusie (IND), Bill Sowders (BSN) 13 SHO: Daisy Davis (CHN), Bob Black (IND) 2 K's: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 100 Injuries NYG- 2B Fred Dunlap (ruptured UCL, 6-7 months) NYG- CF Billy Hamilton (ruptured back disc, 7 months) Various News & Notes 6/3: Philadelphia 1B Jim O'Rourke signed a 2-year extension @ $2,900 per year. 6/10: New York 2B Fred Dunlap is lost for the season after rupturing a ligament in his elbow while making a throw. The diagnosis is 7 months. For the year, he was batting .308 with 17 RBI in 35 games. 6/13: New York CF Billy Hamilton becomes the 2nd Giant player to be lost for the season as he suffers a ruptured disc in his back while making a defensive play. His estimated recovery time is 8 months. The 23-year old was having a stellar season as he was hitting .357/.457 with 32 RBI in 37 games. 6/25: This day will not be forgotten in the history books as not 1, but 2 players hit for the cycle! If that wasn't enough, it happened in the same game!!! It was in a game between Philadelphia and Cleveland. The Spiders were victorious 13-12. Philadelphia SS Ed McKean singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, tripled in the 5th, doubled in the 6th, and hit a 2 run HOME RUN in the 8th. While that was impressive, Cleveland's C Wilbert Robinson was even better as he went 6-6 in his cycle effort. The 26-year old doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, doubled in the 6th, hit a solo home run in the 8th, and tripled in the 10th eventually scoring the winning run. 6/29: New York trades 31-year old P Jack Leary (9-9 career record, 71 G) to Kansas City for SS Billy Otterson (.150, 3 RBI). 6/29: Indianapolis trades 30-year old C John Reilly (.301, 24 RBI) to Louisville for 30-year old LF George Wood (.283, 3 HR, 25 RBI). ![]() A very impressive 3 team race in the Association through the first 60 or so games of the season. The Baltimore Orioles are looking to capture their 6th straight Association pennant behind the pitching of Bob Emslie (17-11, 1.84) and John Harkins (15-7, 2.41). The Cincinnati Red Stockings are deadlocked with the Orioles for the lead. Young lefty Elmer Smith has been explosive this season putting together a 20-7 record with 134 strikeouts, but his 73 walks have cost the team some wins. The offense is being led by the trio of rookie CF Bug Holliday, C Lave Cross, and veteran 3B Cap Anson. It also doesn't hurt when the whole team seems to be able to swipe a base at any moment. They have swiped 256 bases with 4 players having 30 or more. Just behind both of these teams are the Louisville Colonels are having their pitching staff led the way as Joe Knight (13-6, 1.70) and George Bradley (19-7, 1.74) have combined for 32 wins. The offense isn' struggling either as the trio of Sam Thompson (47), Pete Browning (43), and George Gore (38) are all driving in their share of the runs. Batting Leaders BA: George Van Haltren (KCC) .348 Hits: Ed Delahanty (BLO) 85 2B: Dan Brouthers (PHA) 23 3B: Ed Delahanty (BLO) 11 HR: Pete Browning (LOU), Mike Griffin (BLO) 4 RBI: Bug Holliday (CIN) 49 Runs: Mike Griffin (BLO) 57 SB: Tommy Tucker (BLO) 56 Pitching Leaders ERA: Joe Knight (LOU) 1.70 Wins: Elmer Smith (CIN) 20 Losses: Bert Dorr (STL), Sadie McMahon (PHA) 15 SHO: Bob Emslie (BLO) 3 K's: Elmer Smith (CIN) 134 Injuries NONE Various News & Notes 6/1: Cincinnati 1B Otto Schomberg went 5-5 in an 11-2 victory over Philadelphia. 6/9: Kansas City P Dan Casey signed a 2 year extension @ $1,520 per year. In 6 years, the lefty has gone 75-88 in 212 games. He is 13-12 with a 3.61 ERA this year. 6/11: Louisville P George Bradley collects his 250th career win as he whips Brooklyn 17-2. For his career, the 36-year old is now 254-251 in 567 games. It is kind of unreal that Bradley would reach this milestone after he went 11-51 in his rookie year in 1875!! 6/11: Louisville CF Pete Browning blitzes Brooklyn as he goes 5-6. 6/28: Louisville trades 26-year old RF Billy Sunday (.206, 9 RBI)and 20-year old C Jack Ryan (rookie)to Columbus for 29-year old SS Yank Robinson (.203, 23 RBI). 6/29: Kansas City trades SS Billy Otterson (.150, 3 RBI) to New York for 31-year old P Jack Leary (9-9 career record, 71 G). 6/29: Louisville trades 30-year old LF George Wood (.283, 3 HR, 25 RBI) to Indianapolis for 30-year old C John Reilly (.301, 24 RBI).

Anson managed to run himself outta Cincinnati and a good pennant race. He'll end up teaming up with former teammate Ross Barnes and playing for a Columbus team that has a chance to go nowhere this year.

1889 End of August: National League & American Association
![]() The Pittsburg Alleghenys are surging and the New York Giants are sinking faster than rocks in a lake right now. Pittsburg went 23-8 in August to go from 9.5 games back in 3rd place to now leading by 2.5 games. Their pitcher Milo Lockwood has been superb and is leading all 3 triple crown catergories for pitchers (ERA, WINS, K's). Meanwhile, the Giants suffered through a 5 game losing streak and a 7 game streak that saw them lose 2 straight back-to-back to doubleheaders against Philadelphia. Perhaps though, the pennant race will be decided at the beginning of September as Pittsburg and New York meet for a 4 game series in 3 days with the first day being a doubleheader. Batting Leaders BA: Jake Beckley (PIT) .377 Hits: Jake Beckley (PIT) 177 2B: Emil Gross (BSN) 42 3B: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 25 HR: Emmett Seery (CHN) 7 RBI: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 87 Runs: Jake Beckley (PIT) 99 SB: Bob Petit (WHS-PHI) 67 Pitching Leaders ERA: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 2.29 Wins: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 27 Losses: Amos Rusie (IND) 24 SHO: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 3 K's: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 214 Injuries CHN- CF Farmer Weaver (fractured hip, 6 months) CLV- CF Dick Johnston (torn rotator cuff, 2 months) NYG- 2B Fred Dunlap (ruptured UCL, 4 months) NYG- CF Billy Hamilton (ruptured back disc, 5 months) WHS- SS Bobby Wheelock (torn groin muscle, 2 months) Various News & Notes 8/3: Chicago trades 28-year old C Amos Cross (.189, 15 RBI) and 24-year old RF Fred O'Neill (5-13, 2 RBI) to New York for 35-year old RF Mike Dorgan (.254, 18 RBI) and $1,030. 8/6: Pittsburg trades 25-year old 3B John Rainey (.280, 28 RBI) to Washington for 25-year old P John Henry (21 G, 2.72 ERA). 8/15: Cleveland C Wilbert Robinson saw his promising career come to an end today. The 26-year old stumbled rounding the bases and immediately knew he was hurt. The diagnosis was awful, he had torn both of his ACL's. For his career, he batted .282 with 5 HR and 282 RBI including that memorable 6 hit cycle game just months ago. 8/17: Cleveland SS Bill Gleason went 5-6 with 3 doubles in a 10-9 win over Boston. 8/22: Pittsburg SS Arthur Irwin goes 5-6 with 2 RBI in a 12-3 win over Chicago. 8/23: Chicago trades 31-year old 1B Sam Barkley (.258, 1 HR, 43 RBI) and 24-year old 3B Patsy Tebeau (.045, 1 RBI) to Washington for 26-year old SS Germany Smith (.245, 1 HR, 34 RBI). 8/25: Pittsburg trades 27-year old 3B Joe Werrick (.385, 9 RBI) and 19-year old P Alex Beam (rookie) to Philadelphia Athletics for 25-year old P Tom Lovett (30 G, 2.48 ERA). 8/26: Chicago RF Emmett Seery signs a 4-year extension @ $3,440 per year. 8/29: Pittsburg trades 25-year old C Doggie Miller to Indianapolis for 25-year old P Charlie Getzein (21 G, 3.07 ERA). ![]() Going into the final month or so of the season, the Association is still a 3 team race with Baltimore asserting itself as the front runner now. The Orioles have the most experience in this position by far, as they have won 5 straight pennants. As for the other 2 teams, Cincinnati can slug it out with the best of teams and Louisville can limit any team with their duo of Knight and Bradley. Batting Leaders BA: Oyster Burns (BLO) .356 Hits: Ed Delahanty (BLO) 153 2B: Dan Brouthers (PHA) 38 3B: Ed Delahanty (BLO) 19 HR: Sam Thompson (LOU), Mike Griffin (BLO) 7 RBI: Sam Thompson (LOU) 85 Runs: Mike Griffin (BLO) 107 SB: Tommy Tucker (BLO) 118 Pitching Leaders ERA: Joe Knight (LOU) 2.16 Wins: Elmer Smith (CIN) 32 Losses: Bert Dorr (STL) 27 SHO: Bob Emslie (BLO) 4 K's: Elmer Smith (CIN) 260 Injuries BRO- P Ted Kennedy (herniated back disc, 3 weeks) Various News & Notes 8/17: Baltimore LF Ed Delahanty goes 5-6 with 4 RBI in an 18-7 win over Kansas City. 8/24: Cincinnati trades 25-year old LF Walt Wilmot (.315, 18 RBI) to St. Louis for 25-year old P Ed Dugan (12 G, 2.19 ERA). 8/24: Cincinnati RF Irv Ray has his 21-game hitting streak snapped. 8/25: Philadelphia trades 25-year old P Tom Lovett (30 G, 2.48 ERA) to Pittsburg for 27-year old 3B Joe Werrick (.385, 9 RBI) and 19-year old P Alex Beam (rookie).

1889 End of September: National League & American Association
![]() The Pittsburgh Alleghenys have surged to the NL pennant for the 2nd time in 3 years. The most interesting storyline left is whether or not Pittsburg pitcher Milo Lockwood will capture the triple crown or not. Lockwood leads the league in ERA and WINS, but Indianapolis youngster Amos Rusie recently passed Lockwood in strikeouts and currently leads him by 2 going into the final week of the season. Batting Leaders BA: Jake Beckley (PIT) .368 Hits: Jake Beckley (PIT) 204 2B: Emil Gross (BSN) 46 3B: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 27 HR: Emmett Seery (CHN), Mark Creegan (NYG) 7 RBI: Abner Dalrymple (CLV) 100 Runs: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 120 SB: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 85 Pitching Leaders ERA: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 2.19 Wins: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 33 Losses: Bob Black (IND) 27 SHO: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 5 K's: Amos Rusie (IND) 251 Milo Lockwood (PIT) 249 Injuries CHN- CF Farmer Weaver (fractured hip, 5-6 months) CLV- CF Dick Johnston (torn rotator cuff, 4 weeks) KCC- RF George Van Haltren (ruptured ACL, 7 months) NYG- 2B Fred Dunlap (ruptured UCL, 3 months) NYG- CF Billy Hamilton (ruptured back disc, 4 months) PIT- LF Tommy McCarthy (strained calf muscle, 3 weeks) WHS- SS Bobby Wheelock (torn groin muscle, 4-5 weeks) Various News & Notes 9/9: New York CF Mike Tiernan hits for the CYCLE against Cleveland in a 14-5 victory. Tiernan singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, tripled in the 5th, and hit a solo homer in the 6th. 9/14: Washington 2B Steve Brady has informed the Nationals that he will announce his retirement at the end of the season. For his career, Brady hit .278 with 1163 hits with 9 HR and 470 RBI. He also scored 598 runs. 9/19: New York LF Tip O'Neill goes 5-6 in a 14-6 victory over Philadelphia. ![]() It is quite the race in the Association this year as Cincinnati isn't backing down from perennial frontrunner Baltimore. As they go into the final 2 weeks of the season, the Orioles do play more games, but they will still end up with less games played than Cincinnati at the end of the year. 1889 FINAL Standings: National League & American Association
![]() As expected, the Pittsburg Alleghenys held off the New York Giants to capture the pennant and they will represent the NL in the World Series. ![]() By a mere 1/100 of a percentage point, the Cincinnati Red Stockings will represent the AA in the World Series!! It all came down to the final day where the Red Stockings were playing a doubleheader against St. Louis. The Orioles were playing the Philadelphia Athletics. Going into the day, Cincinnati held a 1 game lead over Baltimore. As the Orioles prepared to play their only game of the day, there was word that the Red Stockings had fallen in their first game to St. Louis. But, the Orioles were unable to tie up the standings and lost 4-1 to Philadelphia thus ending their season. Meanwhile, the Red Stockings went on to lose the 2nd game of the doubleheader as well, but they had already clinched the title.

Finances Run Dry in Baltimore
For Baltimore, where has all the cash gone? A couple years ago, it may have been the best time ever to root for professional baseball in Baltimore. Right now, it couldn't be any worse as the Orioles have announced they will not be able to fund a team to start the season. This is a major blow for a team that made the World Series in 6 of 8 years in the American Association. Also, all their players were granted release from their contracts and signed on elsewhere for this coming season. Even if the team does form again, they will no doubt be in for rough years to come. Notable Players Ed Delahanty (Phila. Athletics) Tommy Tucker (Chicago) Mike Griffin (Toledo) Oyster Burns (still recovering from fractured knee, 5-6 months) Jack Glasscock (Brooklyn Bridegrooms) Bob Emslie (Rochester) John Harkins (Columbus)
