Despite losing 2 of their top offensive threats in Fred Dunlap and Billy Hamilton, the Giants are still slugging their way to victories behind players like Mike Tiernan, Fred Mann, and Dave Orr. All that hitting makes it alot easier for pitchers like Harry Salisbury to dominate hitters. That's what he has done this year going 16-4 with a 2.65 ERA. The Chicago White Stockings only trail by 5.5 games with plenty of the season left. With a 1-2 pitching tandem like Daisy Davis and Jumbo McGinnis, the White Stockings are nowhere near out of the race. Meanwhile, the Boston Beaneaters are now a place that no player wants to be at this time. It seems Cap Anson knew what he was doing when he went on his tirade to get traded from the team over a year ago. Rumors have it that King Kelly wants to be traded off the team, veteran George Hall may call it quits after this season, and Hugh Duffy wants a do-over on his 2-year contract he signed with the club this offseason.

Various News & Notes
6/3: Philadelphia 1B Jim O'Rourke signed a 2-year extension @ $2,900 per year.
6/10: New York 2B Fred Dunlap is lost for the season after rupturing a ligament in his elbow while making a throw. The diagnosis is 7 months. For the year, he was batting .308 with 17 RBI in 35 games.
6/13: New York CF Billy Hamilton becomes the 2nd Giant player to be lost for the season as he suffers a ruptured disc in his back while making a defensive play. His estimated recovery time is 8 months. The 23-year old was having a stellar season as he was hitting .357/.457 with 32 RBI in 37 games.
6/25: This day will not be forgotten in the history books as not 1, but 2 players hit for the cycle! If that wasn't enough, it happened in the same game!!! It was in a game between Philadelphia and Cleveland. The Spiders were victorious 13-12. Philadelphia SS Ed McKean singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, tripled in the 5th, doubled in the 6th, and hit a 2 run HOME RUN in the 8th. While that was impressive, Cleveland's C Wilbert Robinson was even better as he went 6-6 in his cycle effort. The 26-year old doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, doubled in the 6th, hit a solo home run in the 8th, and tripled in the 10th eventually scoring the winning run.
6/29:
New York trades 31-year old P Jack Leary (9-9 career record, 71 G) to Kansas City for SS Billy Otterson (.150, 3 RBI).
6/29: Indianapolis trades 30-year old C John Reilly (.301, 24 RBI) to Louisville for 30-year old LF George Wood (.283, 3 HR, 25 RBI).

A very impressive 3 team race in the Association through the first 60 or so games of the season. The Baltimore Orioles are looking to capture their 6th straight Association pennant behind the pitching of Bob Emslie (17-11, 1.84) and John Harkins (15-7, 2.41). The Cincinnati Red Stockings are deadlocked with the Orioles for the lead. Young lefty Elmer Smith has been explosive this season putting together a 20-7 record with 134 strikeouts, but his 73 walks have cost the team some wins. The offense is being led by the trio of rookie CF Bug Holliday, C Lave Cross, and veteran 3B Cap Anson. It also doesn't hurt when the whole team seems to be able to swipe a base at any moment. They have swiped 256 bases with 4 players having 30 or more. Just behind both of these teams are the Louisville Colonels are having their pitching staff led the way as Joe Knight (13-6, 1.70) and George Bradley (19-7, 1.74) have combined for 32 wins. The offense isn' struggling either as the trio of Sam Thompson (47), Pete Browning (43), and George Gore (38) are all driving in their share of the runs.

Various News & Notes
6/1: Cincinnati 1B Otto Schomberg went 5-5 in an 11-2 victory over Philadelphia.
6/9: Kansas City P Dan Casey signed a 2 year extension @ $1,520 per year. In 6 years, the lefty has gone 75-88 in 212 games. He is 13-12 with a 3.61 ERA this year.
6/11: Louisville P George Bradley collects his 250th career win as he whips Brooklyn 17-2. For his career, the 36-year old is now 254-251 in 567 games. It is kind of unreal that Bradley would reach this milestone after he went 11-51 in his rookie year in 1875!!
6/11: Louisville CF Pete Browning blitzes Brooklyn as he goes 5-6.
6/28: Louisville trades 26-year old RF Billy Sunday (.206, 9 RBI)and 20-year old C Jack Ryan (rookie)to Columbus for 29-year old SS Yank Robinson (.203, 23 RBI).

1889 End of August: National League & American Association

The Pittsburg Alleghenys are surging and the New York Giants are sinking faster than rocks in a lake right now. Pittsburg went 23-8 in August to go from 9.5 games back in 3rd place to now leading by 2.5 games. Their pitcher Milo Lockwood has been superb and is leading all 3 triple crown catergories for pitchers (ERA, WINS, K's). Meanwhile, the Giants suffered through a 5 game losing streak and a 7 game streak that saw them lose 2 straight back-to-back to doubleheaders against Philadelphia. Perhaps though, the pennant race will be decided at the beginning of September as Pittsburg and New York meet for a 4 game series in 3 days with the first day being a doubleheader.

8/6:
Pittsburg trades 25-year old 3B John Rainey (.280, 28 RBI) to Washington for 25-year old P John Henry (21 G, 2.72 ERA).
8/15: Cleveland C Wilbert Robinson saw his promising career come to an end today. The 26-year old stumbled rounding the bases and immediately knew he was hurt. The diagnosis was awful, he had torn both of his ACL's. For his career, he batted .282 with 5 HR and 282 RBI including that memorable 6 hit cycle game just months ago.
8/17: Cleveland SS Bill Gleason went 5-6 with 3 doubles in a 10-9 win over Boston.
8/22: Pittsburg SS Arthur Irwin goes 5-6 with 2 RBI in a 12-3 win over Chicago.

8/29: Pittsburg trades 25-year old C Doggie Miller to Indianapolis for 25-year old P Charlie Getzein (21 G, 3.07 ERA).

Going into the final month or so of the season, the Association is still a 3 team race with Baltimore asserting itself as the front runner now. The Orioles have the most experience in this position by far, as they have won 5 straight pennants. As for the other 2 teams, Cincinnati can slug it out with the best of teams and Louisville can limit any team with their duo of Knight and Bradley.

1889 End of September: National League & American Association

The Pittsburgh Alleghenys have surged to the NL pennant for the 2nd time in 3 years. The most interesting storyline left is whether or not Pittsburg pitcher Milo Lockwood will capture the triple crown or not. Lockwood leads the league in ERA and WINS, but Indianapolis youngster Amos Rusie recently passed Lockwood in strikeouts and currently leads him by 2 going into the final week of the season.

1889 FINAL Standings: National League & American Association

As expected, the Pittsburg Alleghenys held off the New York Giants to capture the pennant and they will represent the NL in the World Series.

By a mere 1/100 of a percentage point, the Cincinnati Red Stockings will represent the AA in the World Series!! It all came down to the final day where the Red Stockings were playing a doubleheader against St. Louis. The Orioles were playing the Philadelphia Athletics. Going into the day, Cincinnati held a 1 game lead over Baltimore. As the Orioles prepared to play their only game of the day, there was word that the Red Stockings had fallen in their first game to St. Louis. But, the Orioles were unable to tie up the standings and lost 4-1 to Philadelphia thus ending their season. Meanwhile, the Red Stockings went on to lose the 2nd game of the doubleheader as well, but they had already clinched the title.

1889 World Series Recap

1889 WORLD SERIES: Pittsburg Alleghenys (NL) vs. Cincinnati Red Stockings (AA)

Holliday's homer one of many highlights for Red Stockings in opening game victory

Game 1: The opening game in Cincinnati sees journeyman Larry McKeon getting the call for the hometown. For the Pittsburg Alleghenys, it will be Milo Lockwood, their standout pitcher for them all year long. The Red Stockings strike first in the bottom of the 1st when Lave Cross drills a 2-2 pitch off the left field wall for a 2-run double making it 2-0 Cincinnati. A critical error by Pittsburg keeps the inning alive for George Tebeau and he delivers a single to make it 3-0. Bug Holliday tacks on a solo home run for Cincinnati in the bottom of the 3rd making it 4-0. The Alleghenys finally scratch across their first run of the game in the top of the 5th when a Cincinnati error allows the inning to continue. Cupid Childs capitalizes with a single into left field cutting the Cincinnati lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the inning, Cincinnati gets the run right back as Lave Cross hits a routine grounder to third basemen Lou Bierbauer, but Bierbauer sends the throw into the stands allowing Bug Holliday to score the 5th run of the game for Cincinnati. A Milo Lockwood error allows the 6th run of the game to score. The next man up is Larry McKeon, who helps his own cause as he knocks a single up the middle scoring their 7th run of the game. That would be the last hitter Milo Lockwood would face as he is relieved by lefty John Henry, who is making his postseason debut. Jake Beckley starts off the 6th by reaching on an error and is driven home on a RBI double by Harry Stover cutting the lead to 7-2. Cincinnati then leads off the bottom of the 6th with 2 straight hits, an Irv Ray single followed by an Otto Schomberg double making it men on 2nd & 3rd with no outs. Bug Holliday grounds out to short, but collect a RBI in the process, making it 8-2 Cincy. The next batter, Lave Cross hits a sac fly for the 9th run of the day. A series of Pittsburg miscues allow the Red Stockings their 10th run of the game. Pittsburg finally hits McKeon hard in the 8th when Jack Rowe delivers a RBI double and Jocko Fields plates 2 more with his double cutting the deficit to 10-5. Bug Holliday gets a run back for Cincinnati on a single, his 3rd RBI of the game. Larry McKeon puts the finishing touches on the game in the 9th inning as Cincinnati takes the 1-0 series lead with a 11-5 beatdown of Pittsburg.

Lovett allows alotta hits, none clutch, as series evens up

Game 2:
The 2nd game of the series will see Pittsburg send Tom Lovett, a late season acquisition from the AA Philadelphia club. Going for the Red Stockings will be strikeout leader Elmer Smith. It looks like Cincinnati will score the first run on a sac fly, but Harry Stovey shows off his arm and guns down George Tebeau at the plate to end the 1st. A walk by Harry Stovey, a single by Buster Hoover, and a RBI single by Jocko Fields lead to the first run of the game by Pittsburg. Then, Cub Stricker doubles in the 2nd run of game making it 2-0 Alleghenys. A 2 out rally in the bottom of the 2nd sees Ollie Beard cross the plate on a Ned Hanlon single narrowing the deficit to 2-1 Pittsburg. But, Pittsburg answers right back with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd making it 5-1. The Alleghenys tack on 2 more runs in the 7th highlighted by a Harry Stovey RBI double. In the 8th, 3 straight singles lead to their 8th run and men on 1st & 2nd with no outs. Jake Beckley grounds out to first giving Pittsburg a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th. Despite allowing 11 hits over 9 innings, Tom Lovett picks up the 9-2 win for Pittsburg as they even up the series a 1 game apiece.

McKeon baffles Allegheny hitters as Red Stockings reclaim series lead

Game 3:
With a pivotal 3rd game in the series on tap, both teams turn to their Game 1 starters. For Cincinnati it will be Larry McKeon and going for Pittsburg will be Milo Lockwood. The Red Stockings strike the first blow in the top of the 2nd when Ned Hanlon singles home Ollie Beard for the 1-0 lead. In the 3rd, Cincinnati scores a run without getting a hit. George “White Wings” Tebeau draws a leadoff walk, advances to 2nd on a groundout, steals 3rd, and comes home when Pittsburg catcher Jack Rowe airmails the throw down the line. The Alleghenys finally get a hit off McKeon as Tommy McCarthy singles with 1 out in the 4th. McKeon would stiffen up and retire the next 2 batters as Cincinnati leads 2-0 into the 5th. The Red Stocking made Lockwood pay again in the 5th as Otto Schomberg belted a 2-run double making it 4-0. More trouble arises for Lockwood in the 6th when he allows a single and a walk to start the inning. Then, with Ned Hanlon batting, Lave Cross and Ollie Beard execute a brilliant double steal to put men on 3rd & 2nd with no outs. Hanlon gets a run home on a groundout to first making it 5-0. Elmer Cleveland makes it 6-0 on a sac fly to right. Through 6 innings, it seems that McCarthy is the only one that has figured out McKeon as he has both hits off of him. In the 7th, Cincinnati chases Lockwood out of the game when Tebeau leads off with a triple and gets singled home by Irv Ray. Ed Daily, who started 24 games for the team this year, makes his playoff debut. Daily’s first pitch is wild and Ray advances to 2nd. Then, Schomberg hits a slow to Beckley, but no one covers first base resulting in an infield single. Another run scores as Pittsburg gets sloppy in the field and men are on 2nd & 3rd, still NO outs. Lave Cross loads up the bases as he hustles out an infield hit. Ollie Beard makes the first out of the inning productive as he picks up a RBI sac fly making it 9-0. The Red Stockings hit double digits on the scoreboard as a Hanlon groundout makes it 10-0. Jocko Fields finally gives the Alleghenys something positive as he delivers a RBI double down the right field, his 5th RBI of the series. That would be all as Cincinnati leads 10-1 going into the final inning. Hub Collins gives Pittsburg something to build on for the next game as he collects a RBI triple in the 9th making it 10-2. He then comes across with the 3rd run as Lou Bierbauer collects a sac fly. McKeon then induces Willie Murphy to fly out to left giving Cincinnati the convincing win and a 2-1 series lead!

Smith's dominant pitching and Holliday's hitting allow Red Stockings to cruise

Game 4:
Facing a series deficit, Pittsburg sends Game 2 winner Tom Lovett to the mound against young Cincinnati lefty Elmer Smith, the Game 2 loser. Cincinnati strikes early as the 2nd batter of the game Irv Ray singles to left, proceeds to steal 2nd, advances to 3rd on a wild pitch, and crosses home on an Otto Schomberg groundout. Through 3 innings, Elmer Smith is baffling Pittsburg hitters as they haven’t collected a hit off him yet and >Cincinnati leads 1-0. Schomberg leads off the Cincinnati 4th with a double and is quickly driven home by Bug Holliday’s single making it 2-0 Cincy. The Alleghenys lead off the 4th inning with a Buster Hoover triple and Pittsburg looks to be in prime position to get something going this inning as the middle of the lineup is up. But, Jake Beckley pops up to left, Tommy McCarthy pops up to third. Harry Stovey draws a walk to put men on 1st & 3rd. Coming up next is Pittsburg’s most productive man in the series thus far, Jocko Fields. He is unable to bring across the run as he grounds out to second and Pittsburg strands a leadoff triple on base! Once again, Pittsburg leads off the inning with a hit, this time a Lou Bierbauer single. He is quickly erased though as he’s caught stealing 2nd. The 6th inning starts with a single, walk, and a single that scores their 3rd run of the game. The Red Stockings add on 2 more runs delivers a 2-run single making it 5-0. In the 8th, Lovett is relieved by Charlie Getzein. Getzein is greeted with back-to-back singles by Holliday and Lave Cross. The next batter Ollie Beard singles to left scoring the 6th run of the game. A sac fly and an error lead to 2 more runs making it 8-0 Cincinnati. Pittsburg finally gets on the board when Buster Hoover walks and eventually comes on a McCarthy sac fly. In the 9th, George Tebeau leads off with his 2nd triple of the game. Schomberg collects a RBI groundout for the 9th run. In the bottom of the 9th, Willie Murphy comes up to bat as a pinch hitter and Pittsburg’s last hope to keep the game alive. He grounds out to Smith and Cincinnati now leads the World Series 3 games to 1!

Lockwood returns to season form, wins key game

Game 5:
In a must win game for the Pittsburg Alleghenys, they send Milo Lockwood to the mound, the top pitcher in the NL all year. For Cincinnati, it will be Larry McKeon who is owns a 2-0 mark this postseason. A leadoff double by Cupid Childs results in a Pittsburg run when Tommy McCarthy singles him home. McCarthy then goes to 2nd on the throw home. The next batter is Harry Stovey and he keeps the Pittsburg train moving as he singles home their 2nd run. In the Cincinnati 1st, George Tebeau and Otto Schomberg both single and then execute a double steal to put men on 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. Bug Holliday grounds out to short bringing home a run. Lockwood would tighten up and the Alleghenys lead 2-1 after the first. Pittsburg gets their first 2 batters on to start the next inning, Arthur Irwin with a single and Lockwood on an error. Lou Bierbauer grounds out to second, but it scores the 3rd run of the game. In the bottom of the 4th, Schomberg leads off with a triple and Cincinnati is in prime position for a big inning. Bug Holliday cuts the lead to 3-2 when he grounds out to short, his 7th RBI of the series. After reaching base on a fielders choice, Ollie Beard is injured while stealing 2nd base and has to leave the ballgame. In the bottom of the 7th trailing 3-2, Cincinnati’s Lave Cross draws a leadoff walk. Nothing comes of it as Lockwood retires the next 3 batters and Pittsburg still leads 3-2 into the 8th inning. An error and a walk allow the first 2 men to reach base to start the inning. Jocko Fields, the next batter, singles into right scoring a run making it 4-2. Arthur Irwin adds an insurance run on his groundout to 2nd base. In the 9th down 3 runs, Lave Cross draws a 2-out walk to keep the game alive. That brings up Conny Doyle who came in for Beard. Doyle keeps hope alive as he singles into left. Ned Hanlon steps up the plate as the tying run. Hanlon singles to right scoring a run and then advances to 2nd as Stovey boots the ball. Cincinnati now trails 5-3 with men on 2nd & 3rd and Elmer Cleveland the batter. Cleveland swings at the 0-1 pitch and grounds out to second ending the game. Pittsburg now trails in the series 3 games to 2.

Allghenys back Lovett with 4 in the first, series even at 3

Game 6:
Pittsburg has a chance to even up the series with a win as they send Tom Lovett to the mound. Cincinnati puts Elmer Smith on the mound. Cupid Childs and Buster Hoover start off the Pittsburg first with back-to-back singles. Jake Beckley keeps it going as he singles home the first run of the game. Tommy McCarthy becomes the 4th straight hitter to single and he drives home the 2nd run. There are no outs with men on 1st & 2nd with Harry Stovey at bat. Stovey makes the first out of the inning on a deep flyout to left. Pittsburg gets aggressive on the bases as they attempt a successful double steal and then score a run when the catcher chucks the ball into the outfield. Jocko Fields grounds out, but picks up a RBI, to make it 4-0 Pittsburg. In the bottom of the 3rd, Lovett walks Elmer Cleveland to lead off the inning, and then walks George Tebeau with 1 out. With Irv Ray batting, both men execute a double steal. Ray grounds out to second bringing home Cincinnati’s first run of the game. Through 5 innings, the Red Stockings have managed to get 2 runs without getting a hit so far, but still trail 4-2. In the top of the 6th, Beckleyreaches on a single and McCarthy gets to 2nd base on an error while Beckley advances to 3rd. Stovey collects a RBI groundout making it 5-2 Alleghenys. A Cincy error leads to the 6th run for Pittsburg. Through 6 innings, the Red Stockings are still hitless against Tom Lovett! In the bottom of the 7th, Elmer Cleveland leads off with a single, the FIRST hit of the game for Cincinnati. In the bottom of the 8th, Cincinnati may have a the makings of a rally as Otto Schomberg gets hit by a pitch and Bug Holliday gets on via a single to have men on 3rd & 1st with none out. Lave Cross delivers a groundout to third plating their 3rd run of the game. Then, Ollie Beard smacks a RBI single cutting the lead to 6-4. Pittsburg adds an insurance run in the top of the 9th to make it 7-4. The game ends in fitting fashion as Tom Lovett picks off Irv Ray at first base giving Pittsburg the 7-4 series tying win!

Wild game see lead changes aplenty, McCarthy goes 5-5

Game 7:
The series now moves back to Pittsburg where all the momentum is riding with the home team as they are coming off 2 straight wins and send Milo Lockwood to the hill. For Cincinnati, Larry McKeon will oppose him for the 4th time in the series. Lockwood retires the Red Stockings 1-2-3 to start the game. In the Pittsburg half of the inning, Cupid Childs leads off with a single and Lou Bierbauer reaches first on an error for 2 men on with no outs. With Jake Beckley at bat, a double steal puts runners on 2nd & 3rd. After Beckley pops out, Tommy McCarthy rips a single through the left side scoring the first run of the game making it 1-0 Pittsburg. Harry Stovey grounds out to short making it 2-0. In the Cincinnati 2nd, Bug Holliday draws a leadoff walk, steals 2nd, advances to 3rd on an error, and comes across the plate when Lave Cross reaches base via an error making it 2-1. With Ollie Beard at the plate, Cross steals 2nd base and is driven home on a Beard single tying up the game at 2. For the second time in the inning, Pittsburg catcher airmails a throw on a steal attempt, but this time it brings home the 3rd Red Stockings run of the game as they take the lead will still no outs. An error and two singles allow Pittsburg to tie the game up at 3 in the 2nd inning. In the top of the 3rd, George Tebeau singles to lead off and the next batter up Irv Ray coaxes a walk out of Lockwood. The Red Stockings end up scoring 2 runs in the inning on 2 hits to take a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, McCarthy leads off with a double and Jocko Fields collects his 8th RBI of the series on a single. In the bottom of the 4th, Milo Lockwood leads off with a single and comes home when Beckley grounds out. After 4 innings, the game is tied at 5 and there have been a combined 15 hits. In the bottom of the 5th, the Allegheny score once again, this time benefiting from 2 errors and a single to retake the lead 6-5. An unlikely player ties up the game in the top of the 6th as Bill Geiss, who relieved McKeon in the previous inning, hits a RBI double. After Tebeau draws a walk to load the bases, Irv Ray hustles out a groundout to avoid the double play and allow the go-ahead run to score making it 7-6. That run would see Lockwood’s day on the mound come to an end as Ed Daily comes on in relief. In the bottom of the 6th, McCarthy leads off with a single and Stovey reaches on an error for men at 1st & 2nd with none out. After getting 2 outs, Arthur Irwin drills a double in the gap to tie up the game at 7. Ed Daily draws a walk to load the bases. Childs doesn’t disappoint the faithful as he collects a single to left scoring 2 runs making it 9-7. In the bottom of the 7th, Beckley leads off with a single. McCarthy, who is 4-4 at the plate today, ropes his 5th hit of the day to right field! Harry Stovey singles home the 10th run of the day for Pittsburg. This means they have scored in every inning in the game so far, an amazing FEAT!! A groundout by Fields and a sac fly by Rowe plates the 11th and 12th runs of the game for the Alleghenys. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, Lou Bierbauer cracks a home run over the center field fence to give Pittsburg a 13-7 lead. A wild pitch by Gus Shallix leads to the 14th run of the game. After witnessing what happened in the top of the 9th inning, most people will never believe a game is over, no matter what the situation is. George Tebeau leads off the inning with a harmless single. Pinch hitter Farmer Vaughn triples to right field scoring Tebeau and cutting the lead to 14-8. Otto Schomberg gets a sac fly to center for the 9th run of the game. Next up is Bug Holliday with no one on base, he triples to left. Next up, Lave Cross grounds out for the 2nd out of the inning. Ollie Beard then singles to center scoring Cross cutting it to 14-10. Next up, Ned Hanlon singles, moving Beard up to 2nd base. Elmer Cleveland then hustles out an infield single to load up the bases. Then, pinch hitter Buttercup Dickerson reaches base via an error while Beard scores the 11th run of the game to keep the rally alive. Up to the plate next is Tebeau. He draws a bases loaded walk to let the 12th run come home! Then, the Pittsburg manager signals to the bullpen for Charlie Getzein to come into the game and stop the bleeding. He is facing Farmer Vaughn, who pinch hit earlier in the inning. Getzein’s first pitch to Vaughn is lined over Cupid Childs’ glove into the outfield. As Harry Stovey rushes over to the ball, Cleveland hustles home with the 13th run of the game cutting the lead to 1! Stovey then realizes that Dickerson is also trying to score, his run would tie up the game, and unleashes the ball to Jack Rowe at home plate. Rowe puts the tag on Dickerson and holds onto the ball and the game is over!!! What an unbelievable ending to a game that saw 27 runs, 36 hits, and 12 errors! The Pittsburg Alleghenys have now won 3 games in a row in the series and now lead the series 4 games to 3 after this wild 14-13 win.

Cincinnati puts Pittsburg parade plans on hold, rally in 9th inning

Game 8:
After all the dramatics in the last game, it is back to business tonight as Pittsburg could close out the series tonight at home. They send Tom Lovett up against Cincinnati lefty Elmer Smith in a game that the Red Stockings must win to stay alive. A good start as George Tebeau leads off the game with a double for Cincinnati. He is quickly erased as he is caught stealing third. After Cupid Childs leads off the bottom of the 1st with a single, Jake Beckley triples him home making it 1-0 Pittsburg. The next batter, Tommy McCarthy hits a RBI double making it 2-0. After Harry Stovey walks, Jocko Fields belts a triple in the gap scoring 2 runs and making it 4-0 in the 1st inning! Lou Bierbauer grounds out for the second out to make it 5-0. In the top of the 3rd, Lovett loads up the bases with no outs on a walk to Tebeau. He then plunks Irv Ray with a pitch bringing home the 1st run of the game for Cincinnati. Next up is Otto Schomberg and he is hit by a pitch as well!! WOW, the Red Stockings have scored 2 runs with the bases loaded on back-to-back hit batters. The next man up is Bug Holliday. He singles up the middle for 2 more runs as they narrow the lead to 5-4 now with no outs still. The Red Stockings manage to tie up the game at 5 when Holliday and Schomberg execute a double steal and Pittsburg catcher Jack Rowe throws the ball into the outfield. Lave Cross’ sac fly puts the 6th run on the board in the inning. After Ollie beard reaches on an error, he steals 2nd and 3rd, and comes home on another throwing error by Rowe to make it 7-5. After Ned Hanlon doubles with 1 out, Ed Daily comes in to relieve Tom Lovett. The inning finally comes to an end with the score 7-5. In the Pittsburg 3rd, McCarthy hits a 1 out double and then scores when Harry Stovey triples to make it 7-6. Jocko Fields delivers his 12th RBI of the series on a sac fly to right that ties up the game at 7. In the top of the 5th, Bug Holliday reaches on a leadoff error, then crosses the plate with the go-ahead run on a sac fly by Ollie Beard making it 8-7. In the Pittsburg 5th, Beckley triples and touches home when McCarthy lofts a sac fly to left. In the top of the 7th, Cincinnati retakes the lead 9-8 on a Lave Cross infield single. An Ollie Beard single to right allow Cincinnati to take a 10-8 lead. Beard is caught stealing to end the inning, but a key inning it was as the Red Stockings take a 2 run lead in game they must WIN in the series. In the bottom of the 7th, the Alleghenys get a run right back as Cupid Childs leads off with a triple and crosses home on a Buster Hoover groundout. A Jake Beckley single is rewarded when Tommy McCarthy triples him home tying the game at 10. It’s another dramatic game here in Pittsburg! Next up is Jocko Fields, who delivers a deep double to right field as the Alleghenys take the lead 11-10. After 5.1 innings of successful relief, left hander John Henry comes into the game to get the final out of the 8th inning. Here we go folks, Pittsburg is now 3 outs away from winning their 2nd World Series in 3 years! Otto Schomberg works the count to full before coaxing a walk to lead off the inning. Bug Holliday also sees the count run full and he delivers a double to left as Schomberg stops at third. The situation is now 2nd & 3rd with no outs and Lave Cross stepping to the plate. Henry’s troubles continue on the mound as he walks Cross on 4 straight balls to load up the bases now. However, he does retire Ollie Beard on a pop up for the 1st out of the inning. Next up to bat is Ned Hanlon, who is 6-31 in the series. On what could have been a possible series clinching play, Buster Hoover boots the ball at short for an error and allows the tying run to cross the plate. Once again, this time with Elmer Cleveland at bat, Hoover boots another double play ball allowing Cincinnati to reclaim the lead at 12-11, still 1 out. After getting the 2nd out, Henry walks in a run as George Tebeau collects a RBI. Henry mercifully gets Irv Ray to fly out to end the inning. But, Cincinnati scores 3 times and takes a 13-11 lead into the bottom of the 9th in a game they must win. Pittsburg gets a rally started when pinch hitter Arthur Irwin draws a leadoff walk. Jocko Fields makes the first out when he pops up. Cub Stricker comes up as a pinch hitter and barely hustles out a double play ball to keep the game alive. There are 2 outs and Jack Rowe is the last hope for Pittsburg or Game 9 is going to become real. Rowe keeps hope alive when he also draws a walk. Coming up next is Willie Murphy who entered earlier as a pinch hitter and stayed on to play defense. Murphy works the count to 2-0 before hitting a weak grounder to second that ends the game. Cincinnati has forced a Game 9 in the series by winning 13-11!!!

Lockwood goes vintage style in series clincher

Game 9:
Over 6 months of playing and it all comes down to 1 game to decide whose name will be etched into history forever. For the fifth time in the series, Cincinnati sends Larry McKeon against Pittsburg’s Milo Lockwood. Through 2 innings, it’s shaping up to be a pitchers duel as both teams are hitless. In the top of the 3rd, a 1 out double by Lockwood puts the Alleghenys in business. Cupid Childs waste no time cashing in as he collects a single up the middle giving Pittsburgthe 1-0 lead. In the top of the 5th, Childs gets on base with a 2-out single. Next up, Lou Bierbauer doubles into the left field corner scoring the 2nd run of the game for Pittsburg. In the bottom of the 7th, Bug Holliday reaches 2nd on a leadoff error as Cincinnati trails 2-0. Lockwood shows why he was the top pitcher in the NL all year long as he gets the next 3 outs to end the inning. In the 8th after McKeon loads up the bases on a walk with 1 out, he gets Harry Stovey swinging for the 2nd out. He then induces Jocko Fields to fly out to left fielder George Tebeau, but Tebeau dropped the ball and 2 runs score! It is now 4-0 Pittsburg. Lockwood goes through the order quick in the 8th inning and has only allowed 3 hits. The Alleghenys tack on an insurance run in the 9th to make it 5-0 and they have surely done enough to win another World Series. It’s all up to Milo Lockwood to finish out the game. Otto Schomberg leads off with a single to start it off. Holliday is the first out of the inning on a flyout. Now, they are just 2 outs away from another championship! Up next is Lave Cross. Cross swings at the 1-0 pitch, it’s a soft bouncer to 2nd basemen Cupid Childs. Childs steps on 2nd, fires it to first basemen Jake Beckley and he is……OUT!!!!!! The Pittsburg Alleghenys are WORLD CHAMPIONS!! Milo Lockwood delivers a 4-hit shutout in Game 9; this will long be remembered in the history books as one of the great pitching performances.

Finances Run Dry in Baltimore

For Baltimore, where has all the cash gone?

A couple years ago, it may have been the best time ever to root for professional baseball in Baltimore. Right now, it couldn't be any worse as the Orioles have announced they will not be able to fund a team to start the season. This is a major blow for a team that made the World Series in 6 of 8 years in the American Association. Also, all their players were granted release from their contracts and signed on elsewhere for this coming season. Even if the team does form again, they will no doubt be in for rough years to come.

Notable Players

Ed Delahanty (Phila. Athletics)
Tommy Tucker (Chicago)
Mike Griffin (Toledo)
Oyster Burns (still recovering from fractured knee, 5-6 months)
Jack Glasscock (Brooklyn Bridegrooms)
Bob Emslie (Rochester)
John Harkins (Columbus)

1890 National League Team by Team Preview

Boston Beaneaters:
Last year, the Beaneaters finished in last place for the first time ever dating back to their inaugural National Association days. The team made no real improvements from last year as they lost Emil Gross. The have added promising outfield rookies in Bobby Lowe and Patsy Donovan. Also, they bring in Kid Nichols, who was a standout on the amateur circuit.

C: King Kelly (.237, 1 HR, 50 RBI, 106 H)
1B: Steve Brodie (rookie)
2B: Parson Nicholson (.259, 38 RBI, 61 SB)
3B: Piggy Ward (.252, 23 RBI, 56 SB)
SS: Phil Tomney (.223, 24 RBI, 20 SB)
LF: Bobby Lowe (rookie)
CF: Patsy Donovan (rookie)
RF: Hugh Duffy (.291, 3 HR, 40 RBI, 29 SB)

3B: Billy Nash (.246, 3 HR, 53 RBI, 25 SB)

SP: Kid Nichols (rookie)
SP: Bill Stemmeyer (37 G, 10-14 WL, 3.24 ERA, 140 K)
P: Jim Whitney (37 G, 12-14 WL, 3.33 ERA, 67 K)
P: Dave Foutz (51 G, 15-16 WL, 2.90 ERA, 128 K)

Brooklyn Bridegroms:
In 6 years in the American Association, the Bridegrooms never finished higher than 4th and never closer than 25.5 games back. With their first year in the National League upcoming, they may struggle mightily on offense.

C: Frank Bowes (rookie)
1B: Charlie Comiskey (.261, 1 HR, 50 RBI, 143 H, 17 3B, 83 SB)
2B: Jack Glasscock (.284, 68 RBI, 141 H with BLO last yr)
3B: Joe Werrick (.263, 1 HR, 28 RBI, 20 SB with PIT & PHA last yr)
SS: Shorty Fuller (.232, 60 RBI, 119 H, 58 SB)
LF: Sadie Houck (7-22, 3 RBI)
CF: Monk Cline (.256, 8 RBI)
RF: Fred Carl (9-44, 5 RBI with LOU last yr)

SP: Jack Stivetts (33 G, 6-10 WL, 3.12 ERA, 70 K)
SP: Jack Lynch (63 G, 29-29 WL, 3.01 ERA, 62 K)
P: Jim Handiboe (52 G, 20-30 WL, 3.51 ERA, 188 K)

Chicago Colts:
Last year’s 4th place finish was the lowest for the Chicago franchise since 1879 when they placed 5th. After looking at the staff last year, it is obvious the main cause for their 66-66 record was their inability to come through with a clutch hit. This year, they add Baltimore speedster Tommy Tucker who they hope will generate more runs for them. Unless someone drives him in, it won’t matter how fast he can run.

C: Tom Daly (.275, 61 RBI, 141 H, 41 SB)
1B: Tommy Tucker (.277, 1 HR, 28 RBI, 162 H, 131 R, 139 SB with BLO last yr)
2B: Bob Glenalvin (rookie)
3B: Mike Dorgan (.265, 46 RBI, 106 H, 16 SB)
SS: Jimmy Cooney (rookie)
LF: Emmett Seery (.325, 7 HR, 79 RBI, 171 H, 90 R)
CF: Farmer Weaver (.304, 2 HR, 33 RBI, 26 SB)
RF: Howard Earl (rookie)

1B: Fred Carroll (.266, 28 RBI)
SS: Sam Wise (.212, 1 HR, 38 RBI, 102 H)
CF: Ed Beecher (.302, 4 HR, 70 RBI, 165 H, 41 2B, 83 R with IND last yr)

SP: Jumbo McGinnis (55 G, 29-22 WL, 2.96 ERA, 110 K)
SP: Daisy Davis (57 G, 27-22 WL, 3.18 ERA, 183 K)
P: Gus Krock (45 G, 8-12 WL, 4.58 ERA, 71 K)

Cincinnati Reds:
After making the postseason for the first time ever and coming up just short of winning it all, the club shortened their name and jumped leagues. Their offense is basically the same one that led the AA in almost all major categories last year. That was in the AA, where pitching isn’t as strong as the staffs they will face in the NL.

C: Lave Cross (.305, 1 HR, 63 RBI, 127 H, 43 SB)
1B: Otto Schomberg (.302, 4 HR, 70 RBI, 138 H, 95 R, 72 SB)
2B: Yank Robinson (.215, 1 HR, 52 RBI, 49 SB with COL & LOU last yr)
3B: Ned Hanlon (.293, 36 RBI, 92 H)
SS: Irv Ray (.312, 3 HR, 60 RBI, 144 H, 100 R, 67 SB)
LF: George Tebeau (.299, 63 RBI, 168 H, 114 R, 90 SB)
CF: Dick Johnston (.282, 59 RBI, 44 SB)
RF: Bernie Graham (2-9, 1 RBI)

2B: Buttercup Dickerson (.263, 1 HR, 17 RBI)

SP: Elmer Smith (66 G, 42-17 WL, 2.52 ERA, 343 K)
SP: Larry McKeon (54 G, 26-26 WL, 2.49 ERA, 164 K)
P: Bill Geiss (38 G, 4-9 WL, 3.37 ERA, 31 K)

Cleveland Spiders:
Coming off a 7th place finish, the club was crippled midway through the year when their promising catcher Wilbert Robinson suffered a career ending injury. The only member of the offense that had a good season last year is Abner Dalrymple, who drove in 102 meaningless runs. This was due to the fact that 6 different pitchers started at least 10 games last year for the club. For the upcoming season, they have tabbed 2 youngsters in the rotation

C: Amos Cross (.189, 15 RBI with CHI last yr)
1B: Jake Virtue (rookie)
2B: Heinie Kappel (.207, 1 HR, 39 RBI, 59 SB)
3B: Jumbo Davis (.233, 1 HR, 34 RBI, 132 H, 92 R, 71 SB)
SS: Dasher Troy (12-34, 6 RBI with COL last yr)
LF: Abner Dalrymple (.319, 3 HR, 102 RBI, 174 H, 78 R)
CF: George Davis (rookie)
RF: Vince Dailey (rookie)

SS: Bill Gleason (.236, 60 RBI, 94 H, 38 R)
LF: Spud Johnson (.255, 2 HR, 53 RBI, 133 H, 94 R with COL last yr)

SP: Cy Young (rookie)
SP: Ezra Lincoln (rookie)
P: Henry Gruber (40 G, 14-21 WL, 3.34 ERA, 79 K)

New York Giants:
This club faltered terribly in the late months of the season as they had a 9.5 game lead at one point in early July. The pitching staff is the main cause of this because the offense was superb all year long despite losing Billy Hamilton and Fred Duncan to lengthy injuries. They look poised to make another run at the pennant and now declare the team 100% healthy.

C: Mark Creegan (.280, 7 HR, 64 RBI, 60 R)
1B: Al McCauley (.266, 1 HR, 60 RBI, 86 R, 30 SB with CLV last yr)
2B: Fred Dunlap (.308, 17 RBI, 24 R, suffered season ending injury)
3B: Fred Mann (.242, 2 HR, 66 RBI)
SS: Bobby Wheelock (.239, 1 HR, 49 RBI, 52 R with WHS last yr)
LF: Jesse Burkett (rookie)
CF: Billy Hamilton (.357, 32 RBI, 38 R, 25 SB, suffered season ending injury)
RF: Mike Tiernan (.346, 6 HR, 100 RBI, 165 H, 128 R, 90 SB)

2B: Ed Yewell (.310, 1 HR, 38 RBI)
SS: Jimmy Wolf (.250, 1 HR, 50 RBI, 57 R)
SS: George Shoch (.237, 30 RBI, 46 R, 17 SB)

SP: Harry Salisbury (61 G, 28-21 WL, 3.42 ERA, 146 K)
SP: Nat Hudson (33 G, 9-8 WL, 3.33 ERA, 56 K with COL & NYG)
P: Silver King (48 G, 18-22 WL, 3.09 ERA, 166 K)

Philadelphia Phillies:
A team coming off a 62-65 season that most would say could have been better if the pitching would have performed. Sam Kimber, the only consistent performer in the rotation, bolted to Pittsburgh of the Players League leaving the club pondering who will step up to the task.

C: Jack Clements (.266, 1 HR, 43 RBI, 63 R)
1B: Jim O’Rourke (.255, 1 HR, 54 RBI, 55 R with PHA & PHI)
2B: Ed McKean (.329, 3 HR, 85 RBI, 177 H, 109 R, 79 SB)
3B: Harry Raymond (.250, 2 HR, 48 RBI, 72 R)
SS: Bob Allen (rookie)
LF: Bill Johnson (.267, 1 HR, 75 RBI, 64 SB)
CF: Eddie Burke (rookie)
RF: Bob Petit (.256, 6 HR, 37 RBI, 87 SB with WHS & PHI last yr)

2B: Jerry Denny (.250, 1 HR, 69 RBI)
CF: Joe Quinn (.304, 21 RBI)

SP: Bill Vinton (42 G, 15-20 WL, 3.48 ERA, 92 K)
SP: Charlie Ferguson (34 G, 12-12 WL, 3.55 ERA, 61 K)

Pittsburg Alleghenys:
Who wouldn’t tab the Alleghenys as the favorites this year after they have won it all in 1887 and 1889 and finished a half game back of the pennant in 1888. They return everyone from their explosive offense that led the league in runs scored at 837. Perhaps, the only question on the team is who will step up behind Milo Lockwood as that dependable #2 starter in the rotation?

C: Jack Rowe (.271, 1 HR, 55 RBI, 145 H, 85 R)
1B: Jake Beckley (.373, 1 HR, 91 RBI, 214 H, 122 R)
2B: Cupid Childs (.283, 40 RBI, 83 R, 41 SB)
3B: Lou Bierbauer (.305, 58 RBI, 77 R)
SS: Arthur Irwin (.277, 1 HR, 61 RBI)
LF: Tommy McCarthy (.330, 3 HR, 88 RBI, 69 R)
CF: Jocko Fields (.236, 1 HR, 65 RBI, 71 R)
RF: Harry Stovey (.231, 5 HR, 82 RBI, 73 R)

SP: John Coleman (14 G, 2-1 WL, 2.51 ERA with BLO last yr)
SP: Milo Lockwood (58 G, 34-13 WL, 2.26 ERA, 259 K)
P: Tom Lovett (33 G, 4-2 WL, 2.56 ERA, 38 K)
P: Charlie Getzein (31 G, 12-5 WL, 2.98 ERA, 59 K with IND & PIT last yr)

Predicted Finishing Order

1. New York Giants
2. Pittsburg Alleghenys
3. Cincinnati Reds
4.
Chicago Colts
5. Cleveland Spiders
6. Boston Beaneaters
7. Philadelphia Phillies
8. Brooklyn Bridegrooms
