I expected a close fight, but this was just a little too close. Good win.

Stadio della Pallacorda, Rome, Italy

Jake LaMotta, Italy, 2-0-0 (1) vs Cristoforo Calicchio*, Italy, 2-0-0

LaMotta starts the fight off by receiving a warning from the referee for a back-handed punch and then Calicchio is warned for a blatant head butt. An ugly first round, 12-6, in favor of LaMotta. A close 2nd, 14-11, in favor of LaMotta. A lot of holding and elbows in close as LaMotta easily outboxes Calicchio, 21-2, in the 4th. This is more of a wrestling match than a boxing match as the ref is earning his pay tonight, 19-6, LaMotta in the 6th. Calicchio is completely outclassed here tonight and it is just a matter of how long he will last. LaMotta scores a knockdown at the end of the 7th. LaMotta is instructed to go back to a neutral corner after he puts down Calicchio in the 10th. A 2nd flooring ends the fight at the 1:52 mark of the 10th.

Winner: LaMotta
Result: (KO10)
Cards: 90-80, 88-82, 90-81, all three cards in favor of LaMotta
Punch stats: 86-197, 46% Calicchio - 430-725, 59.3% LaMotta

Very good, quality win. This was definitely a good test to measure how Valdez will hold up against good competition.

I want a World title shot and I figured the quickest way there is to fight and hopefully beat top competition. I've just been lucky that it has worked in my favor for the most part so far.

The only obstacle right now is that all those title holders had recent title defenses. Diego Corrales is talking to his management and is probably willing to give Muckboys and Napoles a title shot opportunity because he feels it will be an easy way to make a mandatory defense of his title, make a little cash and move up the world rankings. A win-win situation with not much downside is what Diego mentioned.
Corrales must of taken too many punches to the head and is suffering from some serious long-term memory loss if he thinks that it will be a easy win. Napoles was flatout whipping him throughout the whole bout and Corrales was saved by that cut. I'll be happy to make that rematch and I promise that there will be no cut to save Diego.

After talking to his management team, Chico Corrales believes that this victory will help vault him into the top 25 in the world rankings, even if it isnt really going to be considered a "quality" win, since I already beat that Cubanito. Corrales states, "All that matters is that I still have a zero in my loss column and I havent been beaten. Now melted butter is crying that he lost because of a cut. There is a reason that he lives here in Mexico and not in Cuba, it is because he knows that Mexico produces great fighters and great champions and he wants to live among us and learn from us. The least I can do is give him an opportunity at a title shot since he probably wont get another chance like this after I beat him for the second time."

Salvador Sanchez, Mexico, 2-0-0 (2) vs Sergio Matos*, Mexico, 2-0-0 (1)

Chava Sanchez looks to maintain his unblemished record as he enters the ring against Sergio Matos. Sanchez lands first, Matos responds. Sanchez lands again, and again Matos counters in a pretty close 1st round. Sanchez takes the 2nd round 11-3. Matos the 3rd, 8-6. Matos has been doing a good job of moving his head and blocking punches with his arms but allows Sanchez to dictated the pace in the 4th and 5th rounds, 24-3, 28-6. Matos has developed some swelling around his right eye. Sanchez lands a combination that puts Matos on the floor. Matos is up but has sustained a cut. Sanchez continues to come forward and pours it on Matos until the referee is force to step in and save the fighter from further punishment.

Winner: Sanchez
Result: (TKO7)
Cards: 59-55, 58-57, 58-57, all three cards in favor of Sanchez
Punch stats: 90-193, 46.6% Matos - 240-402, 59.7% Sanchez

Arena Marti, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba

Felix Savon, Cuba, 16-1-0 (14) vs Wayne Braithwaite, Guyana, 15-3-0 (15)

Felix Savon takes on Wayne "Big Truck" Braithwaite here in our main event. Savon is going to stay away from Braithwaite's left hand, which is the hand that he finishes all his fights with. The Big Truck, 14-7, in the 1st round. Savon does a better job, circling to his left and sneaking in some quick jabs, 17-9, in the 2nd. A beautiful left cross puts Savon down here in the 4th. But Savon gets up and does a great job of avoiding any more punishment, not getting hit once after the knockdown. Looks like Savon has recovered after the knockdown, as he has a good comeback 5th, 24-6. Braithwaite has some swelling around his left eye. The 7th is a wash as both fighters take a round off. Braithwaite does a little more work in the 8th to win the round. Savon looks hurt in the 9th and he is down again from a crushing left uppercut that ends this fight! Braithwaite imposes his will and his left hand and has amassed his 16th victory all by knockout!

Winner: Braithwaite
Result: (KO9)
Cards: 76-76, 77-75 Braithwaite, 77-74 Braithwaite
Punch stats: 172-389, 44.2% Savon - 149-807, 18.5% Braithwaite

Kid Chocolate, Cuba, 1-0-0 (1) vs Alberto Pearson, Cuba, 2-0-0 (1)

Both fighters come into this fight undefeated and in excellent shape. Chocolate has Pearson hurt in the 1st, 17-6, as he doubles up on the hook for his best punch of the round. 8-6, Chocolate, in a close 2nd. Pearson has developed some swelling early in this fight around the right eye because he is unable to get out of the way of Kid Chocolate's offensive attack. 19-6, Chocolate in round 4 and 22-3 in round 5. Pearson is fading fast and his eye is swelling shut. The 6th is just as bad for Pearson, 22-0. A hard combination of blows suddenly puts Pearson on his back here in the 8th. Pearson is working with one eye and is unable to get out of the way of Kid Chocolate's fast hands, 19-0, in round 9. The doctor has come up to the ring three times in the last two rounds and has allowed the fight to go on, but finally puts a stop to this fight as Pearson continues to receive relentless abuse from Kid Chocolate here in the 10th round.

Winner: Chocolate
Result: (TKO10)
Cards: 90-79, on all three cards in favor of Chocolate
Punch stats: 92-151, 60.9% Pearson - 423-867, 48.8% Chocolate

Cubias "El Muerte Negro" LaCiar, Cuba, 2-0-0 (1) (TKO3) Renaldo Canales*, Cuba, 1-1-0

Sugar Ramos, Cuba, 3-0-0 (3) (KO5) Alfonso Devalera*, Cuba, 0-3-0

Damien Norris, Cuba, 10-7-1 (8) (MDec15) Carlos Hernandez, Cuba, 6-8-0 (1)

Roleaux Saguero, Cuba, 15-6-0 (15) (UD15) Antolin Fierro, Cuba, 9-10-1 (5)

Goylito Rico, Cuba, 10-11-0 (8) (UD15) John Herrera, Cuba, 14-5-0 (8)

Jorge Luis Gonzalez, Cuba, 8-7-1 (7) (KO2) Amador Carballido, Cuba, 2-4-0

Pharaohs Casino, Managua, Nicaragua

Alexis Arguello, Nicaragua, 8-1-0 (8) vs Joe Cabana, USA, 8-1-0 (5)

Both fighters try to work on the inside in a very slow 1st round. Arguello brings it to Cabana in the 2nd, 16-8. 24-6, in favor of Arguello in the 3rd as Cabana develops some swelling issues. Cabana is trying get inside and works the body in the 5th, 12-8. Arguello lets his hands loose in the 6th, 21-4. Cabana is throwing too many looping punches while Arguello's are straight, crisp and right down the middle, 23-6, in the 7th. Cabana's eye is really starting to give him problems as Arguello continues to target it with every punch. I dont think Cabana even landed a single punch in the 9th, 11-0. Cabana does a better job of cutting off the ring but it is still a close round in favor of Arguello, 10-8, in the 10th. Arguello blisters Cabana for most of the 12th and the fight is finally stopped after the doctor feels that the eye has become a health issue.

Winner: Arguello
Result: (TKO12)
Cards: 108-101, 109-100, 108-101, all three cards in favor of Arguello
Punch stats: 181-513, 35.3% Cabana - 376-786, 47.8% Arguello

Ricardo Mayorga, Nicaragua, 6-1-0 (6) (KO1) Vasco Faustino, Brazil, 3-5-0 (1)

Now it starts to get interesting as Napoles, Arguello, Morales, and Cotto are all in the top 12 of the CABO rankings. And a lot of the other top rated fighters will be soon entering the ranks such as Valdez, Chavez, Duran. Cant wait to see these matchups!

Ukrainian Boxing Federation Championship

UBF Title Fight - Rovno, Ukraine

[Champ] Alexej Trofimov, Ukraine, 23-5-2 (16) vs Vladimir Virchis, Ukraine, 12-4-2 (9)

The challenger puts Trofimov down within the first minute of the fight. The champ gets back up and avoids any more damage. Virchis misses with a hook and Trofimov shots a counter shot that puts Virchis down at the beginning of round 2. Virchis is down again at the end of the round. 20-0, Trofimov, in the 3rd round. Virchis started the fight off well, but has been getting a butt-kicking since, 16-9, Trofimov in the 4th. Virchis regroups, 21-6, in the 5th. The champ has some significant swelling around his left eye. Virchis takes the 6th with some effective punching, 15-9. Another good round for the challenger, 17-4, in the 7th. Trofimov is cut under the right eye and is down in the 8th. Virchis doesnt have enough time left in the round to end the fight as Trofimov survives and makes it to his corner. The 9th is a continuation of the 8th, all Virchis, 24-2. Trofimov's left eye is completely shut and the fight has been stopped because the doctor feels that Trofimov is incapable of seeing clearly out of his eye to defend himself. Vladimir Virchis is the new UBF Champion!

Winner: Virchis
Result: (TKO10)
Cards: 85-81, on all three cards in favor of Virchis
Punch stats: 152-548, 27.7% Trofimov - 294-822, 35.8% Virchis

Boxing Union Ireland Championship

BUI Title Fight - Shanon, Ireland

[Champ] Jim Dunn, Ireland, 15-4-1 (9) vs Kevin McBride, Ireland, 16-2-0 (14)

Dunn has come into this fight a little heavier than usual but it looks like he has been lifting. And his new-found strength has helped to put the Clones Colossus down on the mat in the 1st round of this BUI Title fight. McBride comes back and takes the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Dunn hurts McBride again in the 4th, 15-11. The 5th is a give and take round with both fighters landing effective punches. 12-7, McBride in the 6th. Dunn lands some good power shots in the 7th, 10-4. The 8th is good for the champ, 17-2, as McBride now has some bad swelling around his right eye. A good flurry late wins the 10th for McBride, 10-4. Dunn keeps landing some big shots but just cant put away this kid, 20-7, in the 11th. The champ is cut in the 12th under his right eye. McBride needs to go to work now, but both men are tired and the round is one full of clinches, 4-4. We enter the championship rounds, McBride lands some nice shots that reopens the cut under and over the right eye of the champ. Wait, the action has been stopped, and the doctor has come up to look at the cuts. That is the end of the fight as Kevin McBride wins the BUI belt by TKO!

Winner: McBride
Result: (TKO14)(Cuts)
Cards: 124-123 McBride, 124-122 McBride, 123-123
Punch stats: 267-733, 36.4% Dunn - 264-849, 31.1% McBride

Good wins for Sanchez and Arguello ... tough loss for Savon.

Sanchez told me after his fight that he didn't like the way Jose Luis Ramirez was looking at him.

Damn, not what I wanted to see from Savon. It's been a rough month for the Muckboys hopefully Galaxy and Medel can save it from turning into a disaster.

It was a tough fight, a "6" vs a "9" and Braithwaite was coming off two consecutive losses. The only thing that was in his favor was that all of the fights that he won came by knockout, so he always has that one-punch power to end a fight. Muckboys is having an off-month, but I suspect that it is going to get a lot tougher for all promotional teams as their fighters enter the rankings and start facing top-flite competition every time out. The CABO region is going to be especially brutal with all the new additions from Mexico.

Provincial Stadium, Suphanburi, Thailand

Samson 3K Battery, Thailand, 5-1-0 (5) vs Pongsaklek Wongjongkam, Thailand, 4-1-0 (2)

Battery shoots out of his corner looking to exact revenge for his only loss and lands a nice one-two to open the round. Wongjongkam is caught off-guard to start but recovers his guard and gets a chance to rally. Battery, 19-9, in the 1st. Nice exchanges in a close 2nd round, 10-8, in favor of Battery. Battery wins the 3rd, 17-7, but takes a nice shot from Wongjongkam that opens up a big cut under his left eye. Battery 21-6, in the 5th. Battery's cut has seemed to motivate him to up the ante and press the action for fear of a stoppage as he takes the next three rounds. Battery's cutman has done a nice job in the corner as his cut has not reopened. Wongjongkam wins his first round since the 5th, and lands some nice shots in the 11th. Both of Pong's eyes are badly swollen as we enter the 13th. 15-0, Battery dominates the entire 13th round. Battery has dominated this entire fight since the opening rounds and finishes the fight with a 17-3, last round. Expect a lopsided unanimous decision for Battery.

Winner: Battery
Result: (UD15)
Cards: 148-137, 145-141, 148-138, all three cards in favor of Battery
Punch stats: 217-584, 37.2% Wongjongkam - 492-918, 53.6% Battery

EWE-Arena, Oldenburg, Germany

Kelly Pavlik, Slovakia, 6-0-0 (6) vs Markus Bott, Germany, 5-1-0 (3)

Pavlik ventures to foreign lands and starts out with a clean body shot, a combo, and straight right to win the 1st round, 12-4. Pavlik continues his pace with a string of unanswered punches as Bott gets trapped in the corner and refuses or is unable to summon up his own offense. The referee is forced to step in after warning Bott "to do something or else I will have to stop it."

Winner: Pavlik
Result: (TKO3)
Cards: 20-18 Pavlik, 20-18 Pavlik, 19-19
Punch stats: 24-98, 24.5% Bott - 81-136, 59.6% Pavlik
