Arcari stops Perkins in 11th round,
claims 140-pound world championship

The strange world that is boxing outside of the IBL has had little to become excited about during the last couple of years, but one bright spark has been the outstanding junior-welterweight rivalry between Mississippi's Eddie Perkins and the Italian Bruno Arcari. Back at the beginning of 2006, Perkins held the WBA belt while Arcari started the year by winning the IBF championship in January. Both men held onto their respective titles through until the end of the year, when Arcari's became defunct due to the ill-fated IBF/WBO merger. Rather than fighting for the inaugural IBO championship, Arcari instead took the more lucrative option of challenging long-time WBC titleholder Javier Gutierrez in February '07. Arcari stopped the Argentinian in the 9th round to claim both his title and status as the official world champion.

Perkins had agreed to take on the winner in a unification showdown, although he had to firstly get past New York's Leron Mathis in a March title defense, which he was successful in doing. It set the stage for Perkins vs Arcari in a September clash for both the WBA and WBC titles. After an outstanding 12-round stoush, the judges could not separate them and the bout was scored as a draw, meaning both men retained their championships. The rematch, held six months later in March '08, was just as competitive. Perkins started strongly, but had to withstand a late Arcari rally, which included being dropped by an uppercut in round nine. Once again, it seemed that a draw was a possibility, but Perkins took the decision by a slim split decision verdict to become the new world champion.

These two brave warriors clearly had unfinished business, though. A third meeting was scheduled for August, but when Perkins suffered a shoulder injury during his training camp, the fight was cancelled. Arcari considered finding an alternate opponent and going ahead and fighting on the planned date, but when the WBC announced that such a fight would be for their "interim" title, Arcari decided to wait for Perkins instead. Their third clash took place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas tonight, and it was Arcari who finally secured a victory for himself in the rivalry. It is hard to believe, but this slugfest was even more action-packed than the first two. The difference was that where the first two had been close affairs, Arcari clearly had Perkins's measure on this occasion.

Perkins started well enough, and held his own through the first three rounds, but when Arcari dominated the 4th, the tide turned his way, and stayed there for most of the remainder of the fight. Perkins rallied in round eight, but when Arcari floored him with an uppercut at the end of the 9th, the signals were clear. It was the same punch that did the damage in their second clash, and Perkins wore an almost resigned expression as he returned to his corner after receiving a standing eight count after the bell. They cruised through round ten, but Arcari came out all guns blazing in the 11th, intent on finishing it. He pummelled Perkins, leading referee Joe Cortez with no option but to jump in and wave it over at the 2:46 mark.

Arcari, who improved to 29-3-2(21) with the victory, outlanded Perkins 338-254. When the possibility of a fourth bout between the two men was mentioned, he was enthusiastic about it, saying it was pretty much a necessity with their rivalry now knotted at 1-1-1. Perkins fell to 37-3-1(26), and while the immediate sting and disappointment of defeat had him not quite as enthusiastic as Arcari, he confirmed that he'd gladly step back into the ring with the Italian again. It might not be as simple as that, though, as the WBC seems intent on ending the unified title status of the junior-welterweight division. They announced before tonight's fight that, regardless of the result, they would be expecting the winner to next defend the WBC belt against the man who claimed that bogus "interim" title back in August, Nashville's Frankie Randall.

It's simply another example of how far away the old alphabet sanctioning organisations currently are from competing with the IBL. If the WBA and WBC can't work together against their common enemy, and are actively seeking to harm each other, what chance do they have against the juggernaut that is the International Boxing League?

Should get back to working on this early next week. I've simmed all of the opening International Conference bouts with the exception of the welterweights, but the main thing for me to do is finish off the schedule for stage one of the WCC. I want to try to get to the beginning of March (when action in the WCC starts) with a minimum of fuss, which means I'll review a handful of the IC February bouts in an IBL ONLINE post, and list a bunch of the results.

Made some progress with this, and now have about 75% of the bouts scheduled.

Cool, good to hear that you're making progress with the scheduling. Have to imagine that making the schedules up is rather tedious.

A little bit, but I also enjoy it quite a lot, in a mad scientist type of way, lol. While I'm doing it, I'm trying to get into the heads of the fighters and their managers and think of what it is that they are hoping to achieve in their next fight in terms of moving up the rankings, staying where they are, etc.

As an example, all the heavyweights already know what the situation is in regards to the world title picture, which is that Jackson and Haynes aren't fighting until stage two, so no one else is getting a shot until at least stage three. There's also the fact that the winner of the IC gets an automatic title shot to start 2010, so the time to make a move and impress for that precious stage three title shot is really during stage two, although a loss in stage one obviously blows their chance out of the water, anyway.

IBL confirms WCC's stage one schedule
is now finalised and complete

Story by Michael Broughton

The IBL issued a press release yesterday afternoon which confirmed that the schedule for stage one of its 2009 World Championship Conference is now complete. A total of 85 bouts will be contested over the course of 25 fight cards between March 7 and May 9, including world title fights in the flyweight, featherweight, light-heavyweight and junior-heavyweight divisions. Ten of the cards will be staged in the USA, with Cuba, Canada, Nigeria, South Africa, Panama, Germany, Australia, Japan, Russia, England (two cards), Mexico, Argentina and the Philippines (two cards) to also play host to the league.

One of the major talking points during the last month had related to the lightweight division and its world champion Patricio Marquez's decision over who he would be defending the title against in stage two. It led to a number of other competitors having to wait before scheduling their stage one fights, including former world champions Francsico Ortiz, Ben Villaflor and Joe Brown, aswell as Olympic gold medallist Pernell Whitaker, who will be debuting in the WCC this year. Marquez announced on February 9 that he would be defending the belt against Brown on June 27 in Las Vegas. It was the outcome most observers had expected, and it set in motion the subsequent announcement of stage one bouts for Ortiz, Villaflor and Whitaker.

The belief has been that, regardless of the result, Marquez's next bout will be his last world title fight in the lightweight division, as he will almost certainly end the year by contesting a "superfight" against compatriot and current world featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez. With that in mind, the other top lightweight contenders may have looked at their stage one outings as unofficial elimination bouts for the right to fight for what will be a vacated world title later in the year. At one point, Villaflor had actually requested to be allowed to sit out stage one, due to the fact that he contested three 15-round world title fights in 2008, but eventually he agreed to a fight against 7th-ranked Scotsman Jim Watt on May 2 in Manila.

Ortiz, who has fought Marquez three times and lost each time (although in controversial circumstances on one occasion) knows that he was not going to get another title shot as long as Marquez holds the belt, and he agreed to the high-risk matchup of putting his #2-ranking on the line against Whitaker, who is placed at #11. In this instance, the ranking is almost insignificant as Whitaker and his perfect 24-0 record is regarded by most experts as an almost certainty to be wearing the world title belt around his waist at some point during the next eighteen months (if he can remain undefeated, of course). A win against him would virtually guarantee that Ortiz will be fighting for the belt at the end of the year.

The April 25 lightweight clash between former IBF junior-lightweight champion Hector Hernandez (ranked #3) and former world featherweight champion Jim Driscoll (ranked #6) will also have a major bearing on future world title fights. Even though Hernandez was unsuccessful in his world title bid against Villaflor in June, and Driscoll was defeated in his IBL debut by Joe Brown in April, the winner of their clash will be in a strong position to push for a place in the year end championship bout. All in all, it figures to be an absolutely fascinating year for the WCC's lightweight division.

Next up will be month-end summaries/reviews for February '09 for both IBL and non-IBL, and then we'll jump into the WCC action for March.

I'm just gonna list the results for the preliminary stages of the IC. Once I get to the knockout stages I'll review some of the fights. The WCC is the main focus of the story, so it will get the most attention and detail.

Cool, yeah no reason to eat up your time and burnout yourself out on matches that don't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

We have a long weekend coming up down here in Australia, with a public holiday on Monday. Normally I would just spend it in Sydney, but this year I will be going up north to visit my parents. My dad has been ill for quite some time and I have not seen them since March. I will be taking Friday off work, and driving up there on Thursday night and Friday morning. It's a 600 mile trip so will probably take a good twelve hours to get there. It means I won't be updating this thread until at least early next week, 'cause I'm only halfway through doing the IC February results summary.

Eh, don't know if I'll bother doing that again. Took forever with all the copying and pasting and typing in results. Imagine if I'd had to type out each individual name, lol.

Nice scalp for Briceno.

Media excerpts, February 2009

"...and after coming to the the IBL accompanied by a good deal of hype, there was quite a bit of pressure on the Venezuelan-born New Yorker to put on a great show in his league debut. Briceno didn't disappoint, dropping his Puerto Rican opponent Wilfredo Vazquez twice on the way to a comfortable unanimous decision victory. The 20-year-old featherweight received identical 59-54 verdicts from each judge, with only a less than eventful third round being scored in Vazquez's favour.

Briceno had it all but sewn up after round two, as he floored Vazquez with a jolting right cross a minute into the opening stanza and then deposited him on his backside with a thudding uppercut just moments before the end of the second. He unleashed a torrent of punishment on Velazquez in rounds four and six, and when it was all over, he had outlanded him by almost one-hundred punches, 162-64..."

"...but even following the lively discussion on the issue, the IBL remained tight-lipped in regards to their scheduling policy for the Development League. Whatever machinations brought about the situation where the two best young lightweights in world boxing - both of whom were undefeated - were matched up to trade blows in their DL debuts, will remain a mystery for now. Needless to say, Duran and Clay put on one hell of a stoush, and watching it from ringside, I felt like we were seeing what was merely a dress rehearsal for a future world championship bout, perhaps three or four years from now.

The final scorecards - 59-54, 58-55 and 59-55 - indicated a convincing win for Duran, but it was anything but. While the Panama native is clearly the more powerful fighter, Clay's lightning hand speed gave him fits, and if not for the cut that was opened above Clay's left eyebrow early in round two, the Louisville slugger might have had a better chance. The cut bothered him through the remainder of the contest, and was checked by the ringside doctor late in the third round. The left hook to the body that sent the bragadocious Clay to a knee late in the final frame was an exclamation point for Duran.

The respect he showed his opponent in the moments after the bell and the judge's decision made it clear that Duran realised the magnitude of his victory. The final punch totals were impressive in the confines of a six-rounder, with Duran landing 171 and Clay 134. Yes, it may have come much earlier than most observers were expecting, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. Too often in boxing, talented youngsters such as Duran and Clay are allowed to cruize through the early years of their careers without a hint of adversity. I for one applaude the IBL for the matchup, no matter how it came about..."

"...wondered if they were true or not, but according to the website Bleacher Report, the rumours surrounding the former world champion and a stint in the WWE have been confirmed. Yes, folks, former world heavyweight boxing champion Terone Haynes, who admittedly does have a good deal of spare time on his hands before he is scheduled to challenge the current world champion Peter Jackson in Sydney on June 28, has agreed to make a number of in-ring appearances on WWE programming.

The appearances will be mostly on the Sports Entertainment giant's Monday night program Raw, commencing on March 2, but Haynes has confirmed that he will be involved in some way at one of the biggest events in WWE history, WrestleMania XXV, which is scheduled to take place at Reliant Stadium in Houston on April 5. Exactly how Haynes will be worked into and 'booked' in the WWE's storylines is yet to be revealed, but it's believed that the big event in Houston will conclude his stint with the company.

Haynes had voiced his frustration at having to wait until June for his next bout, as he last stepped into the ring on November 8 and therefore will have been out of action for more than seven and a half months by the time the Jackson fight eventuates. He apparently approached IBL president Michael Vincennes with the wrestling proposition as a way to keep himself occupied and to 'entertain his fans' before any contact with the WWE had even been initiated. Vincennes gave Haynes his blessing."

"...so what you're really asking me is, do I think Jacky Johnson has a chip on his shoulder? Man, let me tell you right now: it's not a chip, it's a mountain. He's always had a monster of an ego, but ever since the incident with McVey, he's been going about his business like the whole world is against him. He's convinced himself that everyone hates him, and wants to see him fail, and rather than shrink away from that, he's embraced it. He said it himself back in October. He's playing the role of the bad guy, and he loves it, and with that in mind, what he said yesterday about Ken Norton doesn't surprise me."

"Looking to rebound from a disappointing 2008 in the WCC, where he went 0-3 and was relegated to the International Conference, Hanson started the new year with a bang, scoring a big fourth round knockout of Pasadena's Carl Morris in Detroit last night. It had been an even, and at times exciting affair through the opening three rounds, but when Hanson unloaded with a brutal, flush left-right salvo one minute into the fourth, it was lights out for Morris. Hanson said afterwards that the frustration of last year has been tempered quite a bit by the opportunity that lies in front of him, as the winners of the International Conference in each of the IBL's nine weight classes will be rewarded with a world championship bid at the beginning of 2010..."
