The Joy in Mudville League trade deadline came and went with just one deal being consumated.

The Texas Rangers acquired left-handed hitting Mike Easler from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a second-round pick in next summer's amateur draft.

Easler is likely to see action as the Rangers' designated hitter.

The Toronto Blue Jays will play in the AL East while the Seattle Mariners will reside in the AL West.

Both franchises will stockpile their rosters through an expansion draft of unprotected players off the existing teams' rosters.

In addition, it's rumored that Toronto and Seattle will hold the first two picks in the amateur draft with a coin flip determining which club chooses No. 1 overall.

The league is still seeking to finalized ownership for these two cities.

Home Run Watch
Cleveland All-Star third baseman Mike Schmidt has fallen off his record-setting pace in the home run chase.

The 26-year-old Schmidt has hit 26 homers thus far in '76. Current projections have Schmidt for 43 home runs, which would leave him one short of the single-season record.

Atlanta's Hank Aaron (1970) and Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell (1972) each swatted 44 longballs in one year.

Detroit Tiger Dave Kingman holds the AL record with 43 home runs set in 1974.

Powerful Powell
New York Met first baseman Boog Powell is enjoying a banner season.

The 34-year-old has 17 home runs to date and has passed Dick Allen of Kansas City as the JIM career leader in homers.

Powell, the 1970 AL Most Valuable Player with Baltimore, has 188 round-trippers. That's three more than Allen, who has just six this season.

Willie Stargell of Pittsburgh is third on the all-time list with 183 homers.

Pattin Victorious
Though his name is spelled differently, Kansas City pitcher Marty Pattin would make General George S. Patton proud.

The pitching Pattin has posted a 14-5 record with a 2.82 ERA for the first-place Royals this season. No bad for a player who entered the 1976 season with a career 60-96 record.

The Charleston, Illinois native is playing for his fourth organization, yet seems to have found a home in Kansas City. Pattin came to the Royals along with Dick Allen in a 1973 trade that sent Amos Otis and a draft pick to Baltimore.

Since joining the KC staff, Pattin has notched 55 wins, thrown a no-hitter and made the All-Star team.

Not bad for a guy no one seemed to want just a few short seasons ago.

The Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers split a four-game showdown at Memorial Stadium as the calendar turned to August.

Detroit took game one of the key series Friday night when veteran Mickey Lolich tossed a two-hitter as the Tigers won 3-0.

Oriole ace Tom Seaver then won game two Saturday afternoon by twirling the 38th shutout of his career.

Baltimore battered Detroit Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 victory to back the pitching of Jon Matlack and Tug McGraw.

However, the Tigers won the series finale 6-3 Monday afternoon as Dave Kingman and Ron Cash homered off Nolan Ryan.

When the dust had settled, Baltimore (59-44) continues to hold a half-game lead over Detroit (59-45) in the Joy in Mudville American League East standings.

The two teams will not face each other again until Sept. 6 when they open a two-game series at Tiger Stadium. Baltimore holds an 8-6 edge in the season series.

Diamond JIM Notes: Houston took a hit to its roster when outfielder Cesar Geronimo tore a hamstring muscle. The 28-year-old Dominican is expected to be out for at least 10 months. Geronimo was hitting .262 with four home runs and 41 RBIs in 93 games this season . . . Los Angeles catcher Jim Essian went 5-for-6 as the Dodgers rolled over Atlanta 12-2 July 27 . . . On the final day of the month Chicago White Sox right-hander John "The Count" Montefusco hurled his sixth shutout of the year in a 2-0 win over California. Bob Gibson holds the single-season record with nine shutouts . . . The Houston Astros won their 15th straight game with a 6-2 win over Atlanta. Houston has opened a 13-game bulge over second-place San Diego in the National League West.

The Cincinnati Reds have signed outfielder Larry Stahl to a minor league contract.

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed infielder Frank Duffy to a minor league contract.

The Houston Astros have signed outfielder Bobby Tolan to a minor league contract.

Tolan is expected to take the role of the injured Cesar Geronimo.

Fred Lynn has finally hit his stride.

With the two-time Most Valuable Player shifting into high gear, the Detroit Tigers have clawed their way back to the top of the Joy in Mudville American League East.

Lynn led the way with an perfomance that earned the 24-year-old star AL Batter of the Month honors. Lynn shook off his season-long rust with a .336 August batting average. Lynn hit five home runs and drove home 23.

Lynn's performance mixed well with rookie sensation Bob Bailor's solid month. The 25-year-old first-year short stop hit a robust .372 for August. In addition, Bailor twice collected five-hit games in the month.

Detroit also got right-handed starter Verne Ruhle back from the disabled list for the stretch run.

Meanwhile, reliever Rich "Goose" Gossage has been dominating out of the bullpen. The former first-round pick is tied for the AL lead with 33 saves, a key reason why Detroit has overtaken Baltimore in the standings.

The Tigers jumped the six-time defending AL East champion Orioles and head into the season's final month with a three-game lead.

Detroit and Baltimore will face each other four times in September. The Orioles hold a slim 8-6 edge in the season series.

Diamond JIM Notes: Detroit slugger Dave Kingman is batting just .203 on the season. However, 29 of his 99 hits have gone over the fence for home runs . . . Baltimore may regret trading away closer Rawly Eastwick to the New York Mets. While Eastwick has racked up 18 saves for the first-place Mets, the Orioles have gotten inconsistent performances from Tug McGraw. Thus, Baltimore has put left-hander Scott McGregor into the closer role . . . While the Chicago White Sox have struggled this season, right-hander John "The Count" Montefusco may be on his way to the Cy Young Award. Montefusco notched his seventh shutout of the year against Baltimore August 18 at Comiskey Park . . . Houston right-hander Don Wilson has gone 15-3 since being called up from the minors on June 6 . . . Fellow Astro Frank Tanana has lost three of his last five decisions and has fallen off the pace to surpass Dock Ellis' 31 wins in a single season . . . Joining Detroit rookie Bob Bailor in the August five-hit club were Mike Easler (Rangers) and Davey Lopes (Cardinals) . . . Among the minor leaguers announcing their retirements were John Boccabella, John Vuckovich and Dick Green.
