Monday, May 17, 1954 CLAIBORNE LEAD BALLOONS TO 4 GAMES IN SOUTH ISLAND PRIMARY LEAGUE Talent-wise the South Island Primary League is pretty evenly matched... top to bottom, no matter who is playing who, the games are competitive and close... in spite of this, the Claiborne Cardinals far and away have the best record with 10 wins and only 2 defeats this season... the Cardinals had a tough time with last place Des Allemands, but came out the winner 6-5... in the other league match third place Bayou Bleu trimmed second place Mystic 3-1... Claiborne is 4 games ahead of Mystic and 5 better than Bayou Bleu . Last edited by Eugene Church; 03-08-2021 at 06:05 PM. |

MY LIFE IN 1954
EC's Scoring More In '54 It's the middle of May... sorry, EC is more interested in sports, movies and music and is a bit neglectful of current events... so I thought it would be a good time to bring you up-to-date on what's happening in May, 1954 in the US and around the world. In the world of sports, it was an historic event. May 6 – Roger Bannister runs the first sub-four minute mile, in Oxford, England... he ran the mile in 3:59:40 minutes... though it really was a myth, the mile in less than four minutes was thought to be a record that would never be broken... Bannister's record was broken 46 days later by Australian John Landy when he ran a mile in 3:57:9 minutes. May 11 – U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles declares that Indochina is important but not essential to the security of Southeast Asia, thus ending any prospect of American intervention on the side of France... looking back on what happened in later years, this was good news... don'tcha wish the US Government had kept this philosophy and never gotten involved in Vietnam?... would have saved over 55,000 soldiers' lives... and about a million Vietnamese, at least... really a sad saga in the annals of American history. May 17 - Brown v. Board of Education: The U.S. Supreme Court rules unanimously that segregated schools are unconstitutional. How do you do, all you buckaroos and little darlin's, too... guess what, we got a brand spankin' new number one song on the Billboard Country charts... let's sit back, relax, just sippin' on an ice cold RC Cola, nibblin' on a moon pie and enjoying the top country song in the country... it's by the Tennessee Plowboy, Eddy Arnold... to be honest, I doubt he did much plowin'. "I Really Don't Want To Know" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhr9OX1oBow And since my summer romance with Margie Pollard is going to be short-lived and long gone soon, I thought perhaps I should play a song that I have always associated with her when I hear it... it was a #1 song for the Ames Brothers in the fall of 1953... Margie, just in case you are on-line, this is for you, darlin'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOD_T_-kduQ Last edited by Eugene Church; 07-23-2021 at 06:21 PM. |

Monday, May 24, 1954 THEODORE AND JOLIET STILL TIED ATOP NORTH ISLAND PREMIER LEAGUE Two-thirds of the way throught the season, the two co-leaders in the North Island Premier League both posted victories this past Sunday and are still tied for first place... Theodore belted New Yerby 6-1 and Joliet had an even easier time with Dutton, bashing the Coyotes 12-1. |
