CLE 5-14-2
PHI 3-9-1 Bill Bean hits 2 solo HR supporting Paul Toth’s “good but not great” outing. CIN 3-9-0 PIT 8-6-0 Other than a 5th inning when the Kids strung a couple 2B together, the Spirit’s dominate CIN. PIT just keep getting walks and singles and could not be stopped. Angel Moreno is showing he’s a nice #2 behind Birkbeck. NY 4-9-0 HOU 2-6-0 A wild pitch and RBI single from Mike Colbern give us the margin of victory. I like that we got 2 quick runs in the 1st, but Johnny Lindell gave them right back. Had to pull him in the 7th with the bases loaded for Frank Carpin who got the big out against Spider Jorgensen. We’re back to 1 GA. FL 3-8-3 NE 4-7-1 10 Innings NE scores 2 in the bottom of the 9th to tie—the Strikers P, starter Mel Nelson, and the D just collapsed at the worst moment possible. After taking the lead on a Mel Roach 2B, FL closer Matt Turner just needed 3 outs. He got two, and should have had the third. RF Mark Ryal misplayed a fly ball, allowing the tying and winning runs to scamper home. CAL 4-5-1 MEM 13-16-2 Noboa makes another error, but the Rouge offense scores enough runs for it not to matter. Bob Johnson had a bases loaded 2B for the Surf; it was not enough to even dent the huge MEM output. Both Bourque and Obando hit 2 run HR in the 3rd to chase CAL starter John Burke. Jeff James wins his first in almost 2 months. TB 11-14-3 DET 12-20-4 14 Innings TB P Dewey Robinson couldn’t hold a 1 run lead in the 13th or a 2 run lead in the 14th. 25 walks surrendered by both pitching staffs. ATL 0-3-0 LA 3-6-0 Royce Lint throws a shutout, negating a strong CG L effort by Johnny Gray. This was Gray’s first start since being acquired by the Chiefs. TUL 6-13-1 MIN 2-7-0 When that pen is throwing right, no lead is too slim. The ‘Necks relivers shut the Hits down right when they were ready to strike. Ed Hearn’s late HR made the cushion a little more comfortable for TUL.

DET—P Jim Golden is ready to come off the DL. Golden made 5 starts early this year, Reliever Steve Frey is shipped to AAA and P Jack Spring is released. Golden, like Lozorko, is put into the bullpen instead of rejoining the rotation.
NY—Releases AA P Mark Wiley and Hal Kolstad. PHI—OF Harry Hanebrink, who had show decent power and patience before he got hurt, rejoins the club from the DL. Dave Moates is demoted to clear a roster space. Hanebrink will resume his role as the starting LF, anchoring the bottom of the line up for now. HOU 11-16-2 PHI 5-7-2 Good news for us! The lack luster Summit (who, to be fair, have rocketed ½ out of last) bomb Jim Bouton early. Joe Crawford pitches like a emerging star, and the Fever are seeing first place slip a little further away. PIT 5-9-3 CLE 6-10-1 The last place teams win their second of the day. Alan Wirth is just about as bad as he was against us, but the Force pen shut the Spirit down. The Force defense was also a lot tighter. CIN 8-16-1 NY 3-10-2 Sweep for the last place teams. Nothing went right—at least we didn’t lose any ground. LA 2-7-1 ATL 8-16-0 Mickey Klutts hits 2 HR off of Johnny Rutherford as the Aztecs are rolled. NE 12-22-1 CAL 2-5-1 Dayett, Brewer and Asselstine all go deep for NE; Dayett also drove in 5. Kramer gets the W, while Steve Burke goes 3.1 IP in relief for his first SV. MEM 4-11-3 TUL 5-9-2 Once TUL started catching the ball, the pitching was solid (all 4 MEM runs were UER). DeWayne Buice gives up the game winner. TB 5-10-0 FL 1-6-0 Chico Escarrega throws great for 8.2 IP. DET 12-16-2 MIN 2-8-1 The Hits enter this series 6 GB; DET could make this a two-team race in the NAL with a sweep. Knowing how important this game was, Bill Smith gives up 8 runs in 2 IP, while the whole staff walks 7 in a turkey of a game. The Hits are close to being irrelevant the rest of the season.

ATL—Days after making his first start for the Chiefs, Johnny Gray is sent to AAA for Eddie Yuhas. Yuhas had been on the DL, and should jump right into the rotation.
CIN—Jim Willis suffered an ligament strain in his elbow, but will not be put on the DL. He should miss one start, but be back in a week. PIT—Recently acquired P Brian Snyder has a tender shoulder. If he was in the rotation, they might just weather the week he would be unavailable, but since he is coming out of the pen—the Spirit want that extra arm. Mauro Gozzo, missing from the Spirit rosters since early May is recalled. PIT 6-9-3 CLE 5-7-0 Spirit run home 4 in the top of the 9th, showing closer Bert Roberge to be one of their most effective weapons. Milt Hill had delivered 2 straight SV for the Force, but he was not up to the task today. HOU 0-8-0 PHI 2-7-1 Fever do what they do best: keep the other team from scoring. Ebba St. Claire’s 2 run HR was the only scoring for either squad. MEM 8-17-1 10 innings TUL 5-8-2 Tom Dukes was just left in to long: 7 H in 1.2 IP. Not a bad recovery for a team that was down 5-2 after one. NE 13-18-3 CAL 4-6-2 Talk about nailing down a win: NE scores 6 in the top of the 9th before any outs are recorded. The entire Surf staff was ineffective, 5 of the 6 they used were scored upon. Good enough outing by Jamie Brewington for NE, but nothing that make you think he’ll be more than a 5th starter his whole career. DET 2-8-0 MIN 4-7-1 11 innings In a game they had to win, the Hits score the tying run in the 9th, working DET closer Kevin Hickey for 3 walks. Joe Frazier provided the walk off shot with two outs. TB 8-14-2 FL 7-12-2 Mo Sanford is hit hard early, but gets control of the game—keeping the Rowdies close. When Chris Howard entered the game for FL, the TB offense was ready to explode—and blitz the lefty for 4 R in .1 IP. LA 1-6-1 ATL 2-10-0 11 Innings A one out 3B by Joe Pittman sets up the game-winning hit by Kevin Ward. The Chief relivers weren’t all that effective, but did not allow the Aztecs to follow through on their threats. LA pitched better, but couldn’t get around the 11th inning 3B. Will post the NY/CIN game later.

CIN 1-8-1
NY 2-11-1 11 innings I don’t know how many times we got a runner to 2nd with 1 or less outs, just to watch him die out there. In addition to 11 hits, we had 8 walks—and the error. 20 men on base, and all we get is two runs? Kite Thomas does what he does best, driving in both our runs.

HOU—released AAA P Al Severinsen. UTL Jim Pankovits is suffering from a strained back and will be unavailable for a week. He will be disabled tomorrow on the off day.
PIT 3-8-0 CLE 4-11-1 Jack Banta has his second good start and Johnny Goryl drives in 3 as the Spirit can’t get anything going. HOU 3-7-1 PHI 4-6-0 Sal Campisi had been unscored upon in his first 3 appearances. He walked Marvin Lane to lead off the 9th, entrusted with a 3-2 lead. Benny Distefano drives in the winning runs with a PH single. CIN 3-12-0 NY 2-7-2 The fact they should have blown us out is of no solace. Koch had a rough game, 114 PI in 6 IP. 2 solo HR (Barker and Colbern) is all we can muster. Tied with PHI again. MEM 5-9-1 TUL 6-11-2 The TUL magic is back! Dino Restelli hits a 2 run HR to give the ‘Necks the win. It is Restelli’s 6th in only 52 AB. LA 5-11-3 ATL 7-15-0 Ron Klimkowski give the Chiefs 8 solid innings, which the bullpen almost gives right back. NE 1-7-4 CAL 3-6-1 NE is really bad. TB 0-8-2 FL 2-9-0 Kip Young dominates the Rowdies, his second shutout in only 7 starts. DET 5-11-3 MIN 6-14-2 12 innings The Hits were down 5-3 going into the 8th, and they pushed the runs across when needed. A gut check series for the Hits and they take 2 (both in extra innings) out of 3. Since coming off the DL, Jack Lazorko has surrendered 5 R in 3 IP.

Another off day. CIN, CLE, MEM, MIN, NE, NY (yeah) and PIT all look into a trade. I’m very excited about my team’s first opportunity to trade. I hope Stone makes a couple deals.
CIN offers P George O’Donnell to MEM for RF Sherman Obando. Another deal based on Lex Luthor’s quest for more power, rejected by the Rouges. CLE offers 2B Spook Jacobs and P Mike Walters to MIN for 1B Bob Beall and LF Ozzie Timmons. Accepted. CLE picks up some more OF/1B depth, while MIN gets more INF depth and a quality young arm. MEM offers P Jim C Wright to NY for P Russ Meers, P Greg Gohr, AAA P Grover Powell and AAA P Bill Wilkinson. Rejected. MEM wants a lot for a guy who makes a lot of money, but isn’t performing even close to that salary. MIN offers C Matt Merullo to NY For P Roger Bowman, 2B Hank Schenz, P Greg Gohr and AA P Chuck Hockenbery. Rejected, I thought we should take the deal, but I’m just the manager. NE offers 2B Jerry DaVannon to MIN for LF Ozzie Timmons, AAA 3B Gus Polidor, AAA P Chuck Seelbach and AA P Red Webb. Rejected, in the wake of the CLE deal up top, the Hits interest in DaVannon disappeared. NY offers AAA P Rick Luecken, AAA P Glenn Dishman, AA P Mike Campbell, and A C Bill Bathe to NE for 2B Jerry DaVannon and C Nelson Burbrink. Which allows us to turn prospects into DaVannon and the C we’ve been looking for all season. PIT offers P Vince Horsman, P Niles Jordan and AA CF Jimmy Rosario to NE for P Pedro Borbon. PIT keeps tinkering, as the Tea Men get cheaper. ATL—1B George Vico and C Brain Dorsett are sent to AAA for not showing enough power. C Bud Bulling and LF Larry Whisenton (again) are recalled to the big club. The pitching, which I think you could argue is one of the top in the NAL, sees some late reshuffling. Holman, Murphy and Kiely will hold down whatever leads reach them. Karl Best thinks he is a closer, and until he gets the job, he pitches like one too. The middle is very soft in the pen, but when Myrick comes off the DL, that should tighten up even more. The line up should be better, but Whisenton has to hit the long ball and Mickey Klutts just needs to hit anything for a run at respectability is possible. CAL—The pitching stays the same, even though it has been slumping for a few weeks. Jeff McKnight is moved to the lead off spot, which is interesting since he has no speed and not even 2B power. But he hits lots of singles, and for a team who doesn’t score if they don’t hit a HR, they just need that man on first to turn solo shots into 2-run ones. Jack Merson is promoted to take the spot of Willie Lozado. Billy DeMars is red hot, and will take over the everyday SS job while McKnight moves to 3B. CIN--Jim Willis is more hurt than thought, and will go on the DL for about a month. The further this team falls out of contention with average pitching and above average hitting, GM Lex Luthor doesn’t know what to do. Convinced it is because of the lack of HR, Luthor has been trying to get a big bat, but he was rejected in a proposed deal for Sherman Obando—a player he had turned down earlier in the year. With Willis going out for 3 weeks, there are a lot of innings to fill—at least O’Donnell will be around instead of going to MEM; that would have meant two starting slots would have to be filled. They call up 23 year old Eric Nolte to join the rotation in Willis’s spot. 3 of their top pitching prospects are already on the roster. Could be a force if they can figure out how to win. CLE—GM Adrian Veidt is certainly shuffling the players. Including the trade of Mike Walters to MIN for AAA bats, 5 new pitchers join the staff. And there is a swap on the INF too. Alan Wirth, Jose Alvarez, Dave Geisel, and Milt Hill are sent to AAA, with Paul Menhart, Curt Raydon, Bob Wiesler and Dan Egan returning and Curt Barclay making his debut. Larry Luttrell on the INF is switched for Jim Mahoney, a defensive specialist. So, a little over a week after gutting the hitters, a similar move with the pitching. If they could just find that #2, they’d be fine. Mahoney takes over at SS, trying to help out those unsure arms.

DET—With a team comfortably in first, GM Hal Jordan sees no need for player movement.
FL—Just slipped into a last place tie with TB. Strikers make a couple moves—demoting 2B Bob Sheldon, LF Steve Pegues and P’s Chris Howard and Steve Brown. SS J C Hartman makes a return, while Mike Richardt makes his first trip to the big club. Brian Denman, who had a very rough early season with the Strikers, and Dan Pfister are the pitching recalls. None of the call-ups were recommended by the Scout, none of the 3 he suggested is with the big club now. Almost like GM Edward Blake doesn’t trust his scout much right now. Call up 2B Mike Richardt takes over the troublesome 2B position, otherwise the other call-ups fill out back up roles. Julio Navarro will get a chance to close, something he didn’t do with CAL. Denman enters the rotation, but at the back end. HOU—Butch Davis ask for extension. He probably would have been offered one if he wasn’t 34 years old. UTL Jim Pankovits is placed on the DL. Jim, despite his sub standard offensive performance is used all over the field, so not having his services for a week severely hampers this club. Continuing disappointment Bobby Mitchell is demoted along with little used INF Jon Schaive. OF Jim Tracy, a hard hitting prospect, INF Juan Delis, a borderline prospect, and Jose Martinez, a once demoted vet, are recalled. Jack DiLauro, who I though was turning the corner is demoted as well in favor of Karl Spooner. With Spooner moving into the rotation and Zepp to the pen, the way too lefty problem is remedied. Sine combination has to be found to get outs before Klink comes in to close out games. The offense is beyond help—changes in the bench are not what is needed. LA—I said a few post ago, all that was left for the Aztecs to bring up Frank Baker’s .145 hitting butt to signal their capitulation (or words to that effect). Today, the LA Aztecs promote .152 hitting Frank Baker to take up a roster space for a week until they realize the guy sent down was better. Buddy Parker is recalled as well. But the other recalls are as confusing as Baker: .148 hitting Randy Johnson (not the one on the DL for NY now) is recalled for Bob Talbot (and somehow gets a starting job!) and Gilberto Reyes gets the nod over scout recommended Bruce Look for the 3rd C. Pitching staff stays the same (Wickander regaining the closer role over MacDonald), as the Aztecs look to be taking a swift trip to the basement.

MEM—Still trying to figure out where the deals earlier this year left them—although they did try to pawn Jim Wright’s $4.0+ salary on NY. Not able to affect a deal, GM Vic Sage makes no moves. The drop to 8th is viewed more of a sign of how competitive the 4th thru 8th positions have been all year, and not as a sign in a drop in overall quality.
MIN—GM Eric Strauss rearranges the pitching, but I’m not sure if it is enough to catch TUL and DET. Mike Bruhert, 2nd on the team in wins but sent down earlier this season, Mark Dewey and just acquired Mike Walters are put on the active roster. For a time, the Hits will be working with a 4-man rotation—back end starters have been hard for the Hits to find. NE—they have been dealing-getting younger and cheaper in the process. Bill Swaggerty is promoted to fill the hole from the Borbon trade—acquired Vince Horsman will be given a little more time at AAA than PIT gave him. P Dave Sells and P Mike Clark are both released. The trades and demotions of OF’s Clint Conaster and George Spriggs (along with INF Bobby Kline) create a lot of roster holes to fill. C Ken Suarez, INF Chris Arnold, SS Orlando Ramirez, OF Gary Rajsich, and OF Tony Barron is the call-ups to fill up a turning over roster. As they get younger, prospects are given chances to show what they can do: Steve Burke is vaulted into the closers role. Royce Stillman takes over in RF full-time and Ragland no longer has DaVanon looking over his shoulder. NY—Well, he finally did it—GM Vic Stone went out and made some moves. He first went after MIN’s Matt Merullo, but of the players offered, only one would have had immediate impact. NE was looking for something different: unload salaries and pick up young talent. That was a deal we could, and did make. With C Nelson Burbrink and 2B Jerry DaVanon coming over, C John Orton and CF Joe Hicks are sent to AAA. Hicks was something of a surprise on the demotion front—he had started the year as the regular CF but had butchered his way (.888 FldPct) to a seat on the bench. His appearances really have gotten spotty, with Mejias, Dobbek, Barker and Fiore taken the spots in CF and DH. Burbrink will finally give us someone who can get on base playing C; and DaVanon should give us that extra bat we’ve been lacking. On the pitching front, Vic continues his infatuation with Roger Bowman, recalling him for Frank Carpin again. Their numbers are very similar (bad—Carpin does have a deceptively—hell, lying thru it’s teeth—ERA), but I just trust Carpin more to get the out. But if Stone loves Bowman, I gotta make due with that. Of course, on the plus side, my only duty with the pitching staff is to find a way to hide Bowman’s sucky butt. The NE trade, while not one that had entered my mind as manager, I think could be enough to push us over the top. DaVanon and Burbrink are consistent in what they do. All we’ve needed is that one key hit or walk to keep innings going or bring the guy home. I’ve had a fairly frosty relationship with GM Stone, but this goes along way to making me happy.

PHI—The similarities between the Fever and my NY Arrows are incredible: both have sub-par offenses barely scoring enough runs for superlative pitching. We both have timid GM’s who are loath to mess with a winning combination. That is why the trade with NE is so big; while we make a move, GM Danny Chase does nothing with one of the worst offenses in baseball. No trades, no demotions, no promotions. I just don’t see them staying in the race if they don’t trade for a bat or two.
PIT—GM Scott Free keeps moving the bodies around, trying to build that bench he knows he will need at some point. Gil, Duncan (waaay to soon for him to have been called up anyway), Sharon and Roberts are shipped back to AAA. Silvera, Coogan, Wolfe and Kelleher come around for a 2nd tour. Mauro Gozzo is redemoted before he can throw a pitch. Walker Cress, acquired from ATL a couple weeks ago is recalled to make his Spirit debut. He adds another much needed right arm to the pen. With Borbon coming over, he is given the closing job and Roberge is made a set up man. Again, with only 2 righties in the pen, can’t afford to burn one as the closer. Larry Raines is moved to 2B, a hole left by the Lovullo trade, as recalled Larry Wolfe steps in at 3B. Save for Dave Stegman in the 9th spot, it’s as solid as the line up has been all season. TB—After spending most of the year trying to pump some life into the offense, GM Joe Wilson takes this day to retool the pitching staff. Five pitchers, mostly bullpen guys except for Mo Sanford—who at one time lay claim to the #1 starter role, are shipped to AAA. Brad Givens, a complete washout earlier this season, prospects Jim Magnuson and Sandy Wihtol, and veterans Dan Bankhead and Doug Creek make up the reconstituted pitching staff. Rod Booker gets his umpteenth shot at a job as Roberto Mejia goes down too. TUL—GM Werner Vertigo decides to stick with what he has. No roster moves.

PHI—Little Grrr at myself: Rick Anderson comes off the DL today, could have skipped doing the PHI pitching earlier. Oh well, anyhoo. Joe Ausanio is the clear pick for the Fever brain trust—it really does strengthen the pitching even more. Anderson slips right back at the top of the rotation. If they could find more hitters, they would blow us away.
HOU 2-11-0 CIN 6-10-1 Summit loads the bases in the 9th (after poor George O’Donnell threw 145 PI to get 25 outs), but John Costello has ice water running—getting a K and GO to end the threat and game. DH Chip Hale had 3 RBI from the lead off spot. PHI 5-14-1 CLE 7-13-2 13 Innings Fran Mullins looked to be a hero when he homered with one out. By the time the bottom of the 13th rolled around, Harry Hanebrink looked to share those accolades with a lead giving shot of his own in the upper half. With two outs, the Fever, relying on Ricky Steirer because the 3 men who had closed games this season had already been used, still felt it was their game. A 3 run shot by Cully Rikard later, and the Force has a comeback win in a game Paul Toth started. NY 6-15-2 PIT 5-13-2 With two of the best CL starters hooking up, I expected a well-pitched game. I at least go the win. Trice was wild, and out defense did him no favors. Trice also surrendered 2 HR, not good. But my Arrows just seemed to get the big hit when it mattered. I feel fortunate to get a win against Birkbeck—We are now in 1st 1 GA of PHI and now 4 GA of PIT. TUL 5-11-3 TB 6-10-1 Eddie Zambrano gets the start at 3B and makes 3 errors. And Ed Olwine shows, it doesn’t matter who throws the middle innings, as long as they get to the 9th with a lead. MEM 3-9-0 NE 4-6-0 The new look Tea Men score a victory, actually pulling them over .500 by a game. Steve Burke has a shaky (allow 2 runs to score) save. MIN 3-7-0 ATL 5-10-0 Brian Holman walks the bases loaded before getting the game ending GIDP. CAL 1-8-2 FL 0-8-0 A Cliff Aberson error put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 9th, then Jeff Gray came in and saved Sandy Vance’s gem. DET 19-17-1 LA 9-15-3 Express score in every inning but the 6th. 3 LA HR (including Randy Johnson’s first career shot) aren’t enough.

MIN-releases AAA P Jesus Hernaiz.
HOU 6-11-5 CIN 5-8-0 Good: Jim Tracy hits a PH 3-run HR in his first plate appearance. The Bad: Reliever Mike Draper loads the bases with no one out, force Joe Klink into the game to get the save. The Ugly: Juan Delis commits 2 errors in his season debut—part of 5 made by the Summit. PHI 11-8-1 CLE 2-7-3 A simple 0-0 game explodes when the Fever score all 11 runs in the 6th and 7th. Rick Anderson almost goes all the way in his first game back. Johnny Goryl did have a PH HR (his first of the year) for the Force. CLE walked 10 Fever hitters. NY 4-9-1 PIT 3-8-1 One of the reasons we got Nelson Burbink in the trade with NE was the ongoing problem getting anything out of the C position offensively. Burbrink goes 3-4 with 2 SB and 2 R in his Arrow debut. Early this year, Randy Scarbery was sent to the bullpen with control problems, a short stint in MR encouraged him to get his act together. Bad Randy was back today, walking 4 in the 6th and 7th, but we got out of it without surrendering too many runs. Woody Main has another bad outing for the Spirit: 4 starts-4 losses for the former Rowdie. MIN 1-6-1 ATL 2-6-1 Gordon Goldsberry’s 4th inning HR breaks the tie, and is the only EXBH in the game. Bob Smith loses his 6 straight decision. CAL 3-9-1 FL 6-13-1 CAL Joe McClain continues his downward slide, losing his 6th straight decision. DET 4-11-1 LA 1-8-0 Deflating loss for the Aztecs. LF Danny Schell had just thrown out the go ahead run in the top of the 9th, keeping the game 0-0. Johnny Rutherford, who was getting gassed, walked the next batter to load the bases for Garry Hancock. Hancock belts his 8th of the year. Aztecs did try to put something together in the bottom of, but just couldn’t do more than the 1. TUL 6-10-0 TB 1-8-0 Tight game until Chico Escarraga and Sandy Wihtol surrender 4 in the 8th. MEM 3-9-2 NE 4-12-1 Steve Burkes gets his 3rd consecutive save, but his last two have produced this line: Code:
Date Opp. Result IP H R ER BB K Dec 6/15 MEM W 4-3 1 3 1 1 0 0 SV 6/16 MEM W 4-3 1 2 1 0 0 0 SV

PIT—finally some griping out of PIT. Bert Roberge is not happy about moving to set up Pedro Borbon. Roberge will be shopped. Gus Gil, one game after being sent to AAA, pulls an elbow ligament and will miss at least a week.
HOU 4-8-2 CIN 11-13-2 CIN scores 9 runs over the 7th and 8th to blow the Summit away. Don Lang drives in 3 in the win. PHI 8-10-1 CLE 6-12-1 The Fever takes the early lead and has the bullpen to make it stand up. NY 2-6-0 PIT 8-13-0 I knew we were in trouble when I pulled Russ Meers out after 4.1 IP and 99 PI. This is what PIT does best: deep counts and hits with men on base. A couple more EXBH and fewer GIDP would have helped us. MIN 5-10-0 ATL 6-16-0 10 innings Tony LaRussa can’t make the play on a Joe Pittman grounder as the Chiefs get the win. CAL 2-8-1 FL 1-8-0 Bob Johnson drives in both CAL runs. DET 5-6-0 LA 6-11-0 LA gets a win in the series. TUL 3-6-0 TB 1-4-1 The ‘Necks have 6 hits, 5 in the first inning. TB Dan Bankhead has a good first start, but he couldn’t recover from that first inning. MEM 6-10-1 NE 13-21-4 Wow—NE wins 3 straight after the trades. The Tea Men pound the Rouges pitching all over the place.

PHI 0-2-0
CIN 2-9-0 “Almost a Gem” yells the headline. Diomedes Olivo gives 8.2 of no-hit baseball. Fran Mullin dribbles a single through the left side of the INF. Upon which, Olivo is lifted and Bill Dailey is called in to surrender another single before getting the last out. The Dailey move causes a shower of boos to rain upon the Kids, the fans knew Olivo should have been given the chance to finish the game. PIT 2-8-0 HOU 1-6-1 Pedro Borbon gets his first SV with the Spirit. HOU P Mike Draper goes 4 scoreless in relief to keep it close, but the Summit can’t get anything done. CLE 4-6-0 NY 2-3-2 2 hits in the 5th and a solo HR in the 9th is all our offense. We draw 8 walks, and just can’t make contact, except to GIDP. Alan Koch threw well but gets the hard luck loss. ATL 11-15-0 TB 7-8-2 Ravelo Manzanillo almost undoes Ron Klimkowski’s work by giving TB 5 runs late. TB couldn’t stop the Chiefs late and that was the difference. LA 6-12-0 CAL 4-13-4 INF collapse gives the Aztecs the edge over the Surf. Super Rook Billy DeMars goes 3-5 but makes 2 errors for CAL. FL 2-10-1 DET 3-11-1 Three straight walks by Young, Dobernic and Navarro with two outs hands the Express a win. Hey, this is why DET is in first and FL is tied for last with TB. NE 3-6-3 TUL 2-5-2 2 errors by TUL before an Orteste Destrade 2B gives the Tea Men their 4 straight win. Steve Burke has a closer like save today. ‘Necks can’t afford losses like this if they want to hang close to DET. MEM 4-9-1 MIN 2-6-2 One bad inning, the 3rd, takes the Hits out of the game. A single EXBH will not win many games.

PHI 6-12-0
CIN 1-5-3 Kids’ defense lays down with Gary Ryerson dominates them from the hill. PIT 0-6-2 HOU 2-8-0 Nate Ducayne juggles 4 pitchers to hold the Spirit down. PIT can’t get any EXBH, not allowing them to pressure the Summit. CLE 3-9-0 NY 4-6-0 Kite Thomas rips a walk off shot leading off the 9th. Johnny Lindell is ugly in his 5 IP (7 hits, 7 BB), but the bullpen shuts down the Force. Ray Barker’s 3 run HR in the first gave us a cushion that was chipped away all game. Stay tied with PHI for first. ATL 5-11-1 TB 3-12-1 Game ends with RF Bob Hazle hits into a routine 8-3 DP. LA 2-12-1 CAL 11-13-1 Surf blitz the Aztecs with 9 in the 1st and 2nd. McKnight, Aberson and Masteller all homer to support Glenn Elliott. FL 3-13-0 DET 4-8-1 Dan Pfister has a good first start of for FL, but the Express pitching keep the runs off the board better. Dick Gray’s 3 run shot gave DET the lead they’d never surrender. NE 9-12-1 TUL 4-10-0 The Tea Men keep rolling and the Roughnecks keep reeling. Brian Dayett knocks in 5. The Tea Men scored early and late to blow the ‘Necks out. MEM 1-7-0 MIN 0-3-0 Jeff James is superb. 8 K and only 1 BB and nothing gets through the Rouges defense. Jeff Mutis is almost as good as James, but Wallace Johnson runs himself into the only run.

CAL—Glenn Elliott suffers inflamed back muscles, will miss 1-2 weeks. He will be DL, but no call up until tomorrows off day.
PHI 1-8-0 CIN 2-8-0 Ramon Romero and George O’Donnell give up hits, but very few runs. O’Donnell goes the route in a crisp game. PIT 5-14-1 HOU 1-6-1 Murray Wall did a nice job keeping the Spirit hitters in check—only Larry Wolfe’s solo HR had provided any scoring. But PIT struck for 4 runs late to put the game out of reach. Roberge gets his 16th save. CLE 7-9-0 NY 4-6-3 Paul Toth was the CLE starter, and after they posted a 6-spot in the 2nd, it looked like the game was out of reach. Ray Barker and Kite Thomas both hit 2 run HR for NY, as we get close, but not close enough. Severson and Campos errors were both in the 2nd. Toth was a little wild, but couldn’t get the one extra big hit. We’re still in first, although tied, and that is the most important thing. ATL 2-8-2 TB 3-4-0 The Rowdies don’t get a lot of hits—but they make the count taking advantage of the 8 walks received. Tom Dixon has a rough 1st, but he and the Rowdie pen shuts down the Chiefs. Jeff Gardner’s 2 RBI 2B in the 6th was the big hit—scoring two men who reach via BB. LA 2-8-1 CAL 1-5-0 Royce Lint can’t finish the 5th, but the Aztec pen goes 4.1 IP hitless to choke the Surf. Sandy Vance was impressive, if a little too wild. FL 11-14-0 DET 12-13-3 DET sweeps FL into last (how about those 9th place Rowdies) with their 2nd win in their last AB this series. Bob Mabe has another iffy outing, but HR from Gray, Daugherty and Morris sparked an offense that kept clawing back in the game. FL started the barrage with a 6 run 2nd, but watch helplessly when 4 relievers give up 7 runs in 2.1 IP. NE 10-14-2 10 innings TUL 6-9-1 Adrian Garrett’s 10th inning error opens the floodgates, and NE sweeps the Roughnecks in TUL. This younger, hungrier squad now playing for the Tea Men have won their last 6 games and now stand 1 GB 2nd. MEM 0-6-2 MIN 4-8-2 Seeing their chances to stay in the race slipping, the Hits get a combined SHO by Bill Smith (4.2 IP) and Frank Eufemia (4.1 IP). Scipio Spinks is 0-2, 3 ND since joining the Rouges, even with improved pitching.
