JOE LOUIS RETAINS WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
KNOCKS OUT CHALLENGER NATHAN MANN IN 4TH ROUND
Joe Louis proved yet again he is the most dominant fighter in the heavyweight division, easily disposing of challenger Nathan Mann with a 4th round knock out.

The Brown Bomber dominated the fight from the opening bell, flooring Mann with a devasting uppercut just 30 seconds into the first round. Mann would recover and escape the first round but he would barely lay a glove on Louis throughout the fight. Mann managed to avoid hitting the canvas again until the 4th round. The 4th was Louis at his best. He stalked the challenger all around the ring and knocked him down 3 times with vicious combinations. The final knockdown came with 32 seconds left in the round and was one from which Mann could not recover.

The victory gives Louis a 9-0 postwar record with all 9 wins coming via knockout. Mann falls to 18-5-1 with two of his losses to Louis. Louis also beat Mann early in the postwar qualifying tournament. That time it was a third round knockout.

While the Louis camp has not officially announced any plans it is expected that his next fight will be in the fall against number one contender Ezzard Charles. Charles, 19-1, suffered his only loss in the final of the postwar tournament. Charles beat Tommy Gomez with a 9th round KO last month.

In other boxing action over the weekend bantamweight contender Luis 'The Pocket Battleship" Castillo of Mexico won an unanimous decision over Puerto Rican Carlos Cuebas in Acapulco, Mexico. Castillo, with a 27-11-3 record, is ranked 7th in the bantamweight division at the moment.

In Havana, Black Pico won a battle of Cuban flyweights, beating Luis Fuentes on points in a 15 round bout before 25,000 fans in Havana. Pico is now 16-2 and considered the 7th best flyweight in the world.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
SEASON WINDING DOWN AND TOURNAMENT SCRAMBLE BEGINS
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season bubble schools are scrambling to get those last couple of wins in an effort to make the National Tournament. While there is plenty of uncertainty a couple of things can be taken for granted. Most obvious is the University of Kentucky will be a number one seed and the overwhelming favourite to win the 15th annual NCAA tournament. Further down in this issue we will take a look at each of the 31 conferences and see which teams have a shot at a berth in the Big Dance. However, before we get to that let's take a look at the current TSN Top 25 poll and the history of the NCAA tournament in my alternate replay.

BUBBLE WATCH - A COMPLETE GUIDE TO WHO IS IN THE NCAA's, AND WHO IS ON THE BUBBLE
With 252 college basketball teams and only 64 spots available for the NCAA Tournament there will always be some teams that feel slighted come selection Sunday. Here is a look at each of the 31 conferences and thoughts on who might get good news when the brackets are announced on March 4th. Since each of the conference tournament winners get an automatic berth there could me some major changes during the next couple of weeks but here is how TSN sees it shaping up.

ACC - North Carolina State and South Carolina are in for sure. Maryland and Wake Forest are on the bubble while North Carolina is a long shot.

AMERICA EAST - Likely just Miami(FLA) unless someone else upsets the Hurricanes in the conference tournament. UT-Chattanooga is a very long shot.

ATLANTIC 8 - Fordham and LaSalle may both make it with Rhode Island as a long shot.

BIG 8 - Iowa State is a lock but this has been a down year for the rest of the conference.

BIG EAST - Boston College and Georgetown are in. A strong finish from Seton Hall could get them in the tourney as well.

BIG SOUTH - Only the conference tournament winner will qualify and will get a 15 or 16 seeding.

BIG TEN - Ohio State rebounded with a couple of wins this week so the Buckeyes are in. Illinois, Indiana and Iowa also stand a good chance.

BIG WEST - Just the conference tourney winner gets in. Best bet is Idaho.

BORDER - Arizona State may get in even if they don't win the conference but no one else aside from the tournament winner has a chance.

COLONIAL - Old Dominion has done enough to qualify regardless if they win the conference tournament or not.

EASTERN INDEPENDANT - Holy Cross, New York University and CCNY all will make the field.

HORIZON - If they don't win the conference it still may hard to bypass Indiana State and their 20-7 record.

IVY LEAGUE - Likely just 2 teams from the Ivy League will make the tournament which means someone out of Princeton, Brown and Harvard will go to the NIT dissappointed.

MAAC - Just the tourney winner. Best bet is Rider or Canisius.

MAC - Again just the conference tournament winner with Miami of Ohio or Western Michigan as the best bet.

MEAC - Delaware State is 20-3 and seemingly a lock to make the field.

MID-CONTINENT - Western Illinois is 17-6 but if they can't win the conference they will likely be left on the outside come selection time.

MID-LAND - Richmond and Middle Tennessee State could both make the field.

MIDWEST INDEPENDANT - Notre Dame seems to be the only team to have a chance to qualify for an at-large bid.

MISSOURI VALLEY - UTEP and Drake should both be in with Bradley and Creighton having a chance as well.

OHIO VALLEY - No team in the conference has a winning record overall but someone has to qualify.

PATRIOT - Colgate is in whether they win the conference or not.

PCC NORTH - Oregon, San Francisco, Washington State and Washington all belong in the field but depending on how conference tourney's play out the last two may not both make it.

PCC SOUTH - USC, Stanford and California all seem to be likely participants.

SEC - Kentucky is a number 1 seed. Florida, Auburn, defending champ Alabama and Georgia all can make a case for inclusion.

SKYLINE - Fresno State, Utah and Wyoming will be battling for the one automatic bid and the longshot chance of an at-large selection as well.

SOUTHWEST - Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor all can make a decent arguement for inclusion.

SOUTHERN - Davidson and VMI are both longshots for an at-large entry but likely only the conference winner will make it.

SOUTHLAND - The University of Houston is dominating the conference but they will likely need to win their tourney to get a berth in the NCAA's.

SUNBELT - New Orleans is in and Charlotte is a long shot.

SWAC - A weak schedule means the only way in for 20-5 Southern University is to win the SWAC tourney.

So who are the top 4 seeds in each region?

Here is how TSN sees it if the tournament was to start today.
Code:
EAST REGION SOUTH REGION MIDWEST REGION WEST REGION
1 Holy Cross	1 Kentucky	1 UTEP 1 Oregon
2 Boston Coll.	2 Iowa State	2 NYU 2 USC
3 CCNY 3 New Orleans	3 Drake 3 San Francisco
4 Richmond	4 Notre Dame	4 Stanford	4 Ohio State

BIBEAULT LEADS HAWKS TO PAIR OF WINS
Aside from the scoring exploits of superstar Max Bentley there has been little good news coming out of the Windy City this hockey season. However, the recent play of goaltender Paul Bibeault may change that. Bibeault recorded the Hawks first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over New York and followed that up with a 45 save performance in a 4-1 win over Boston. His goals against average may not show it but Bibeault has been outstanding all season. Bibeault and fellow Chicago netminder Emile Francis routinely face 40-50 shots a game as more often than not the porous Hawks defense is nowhere to be found.

Bibeault was aquired from Montreal during the offseason in exchange for forward George Allen. He has also spent time with Boston and Toronto as he bounced around during the war years as a replacement goalie wherever he was needed. The shutout over the Rangers was the 10th goose-egg of his career.

With 18 games to play it is highly unlikely the Hawks will be able to make up the 11 points that seperate them from a playoff spot but there is good news for the future if Bibeault continues to perform as he has this season.

CAPITOLS WINNING STREAK FINALLY SNAPPED AT 11
It required two overtime periods but the Chicago Stags finally were able to accomplish something that on the previous 11 occassions BAA teams failed to do - beat the Washington Capitols. Don Carlson had 22 points and Max Zaslofsky and Chuck Halbert added 13 each to give the Stags an 85-79 doubleovertime win over the visiting Washington squad. Freddie Scolari led the Caps with 22 points before the strain of back-to-back games in St Louis and Chicago got to Washington.

"The guys were simply worn out by the time we hit overtime," explained Scolari. "It is tough to come out here and win all 4 (games)". Scolari was referring to a 4-game western swing that saw Washington emerge victorious in Cleveland, Detroit and St Louis before the loss to Chicago.

The winning streak may be over but while it lasted it boosted the Capitols into a 6 game lead over second place Philadelphia in the Eastern Division. Chicago leads St Louis in the Western Division by 2.5 games.

BROWNS COACH LATTA ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
After taking his team to the National Football League Championship game only to come up short against Chicao, Cleveland Browns head coach Tony Latta has announced his retirement. In his place the Browns have signed ex-Buffalo boss Jimmy McGinest. The 47 year old McGinest is considered a defensive guru and has consistantly had the Bills defense ranked among the league's best. Unfortunately their offense was a different story. In his place the Bills added ex-Atlanta coach Hank Williams.

FALCONS TIGHT END BRIAN HARDEN RETIRES
The most notable retirement announcement during the offseason was news out of Atlanta that tight end Brian Harden has decided to call it a career. Harden started 96 games for the Falcons and had 444 receptions including 40 touchdown catches. The former West Virginia standout was an NFC first team allstar in 1943 and 1944 after making the second team the two previous seasons.

Harden has started every game the Falcons played since the league was formed in 1940 but endured the worst season of his career in 1946 making just 19 catches. His best season was 1943 when he had 98 catches and led the team with 13 touchdown grabs.

AUBURN SHOCKS KENTUCKY 100-47
A WEEK FULL OF UPSETS AS MOST CONFERENCE SCHEDULES FINISH UP
The Auburn Tigers shocked the SEC and the world of college basketball by hammering number one ranked Kentucky in one of the most lobsided games of the SEC season. Auburn built a 51-23 haltime lead in front of their hometown crowd and did not let up in the second half cruising to a 100-47 victory over a Wildcats team that had not lost since December 3rd.

Senoir forward Ben Van Wagnor had a career high 29 to lead Auburn but it was a smothering defense that did Kentucky in. The Wildcats shot just 22% from the field and turned the ball over 10 times compared to Auburn's 3. The Kentucky bench contributed just 4 points in the game.

Two days later Kentucky took out it's frustration on Alabama, spanking the Crimson Tide by 51 points. With two games to play Kentucky has already clinched the SEC title with a 15-1 record. Kentucky finishes up with games at Vanderbilt and Tennessee next weekend. Auburn is 11-6 and in third place behind 12-4 Florida in the conference. The Tigers finish up at home against Alabama while Florida has road games at Mississippi and Georgia.

Auburn's blowout of Kentucky was just one upset in a week filled with surprises. Other ranked teams to taste defeat in the past 7 days include:

On Monday 15th ranked Richmond lost 66-54 to Georgia State. The win moved Georgia State to within a game of the Spiders in the Mid-Land Conference but Richmond would clinch the title with a win Sunday over Ohio.

Tuesday 18th ranked Ohio State was on the shortend of a 74-66 score at home to Purdue. The win forced a 3-way tie atop the Big Ten standings between Purdue, Ohio State and Illinois.

On Wednesday in addition to the Kentucky loss, 16th ranked Miami was dumped 78-62 by North Carolina A&T. Miami did manage to win on the weekend to take the America East Conference regular season title by one game over UT-Chattanooga.

By far the biggest day for surprises was Thursday 12th ranked Iowa State fell 88-82 at Missouri. 23rd ranked North Carolina State was a loser at home to Maryland 71-50. Washington won at #3 Oregon 80-75 in a game that cost Oregon a share of the PCC North regular season title which went to San Francisco. 5th ranked New York University was shocked at home 61-60 by Villanova. Also in the Eastern Independant Conference Duquesne won 91-58 at 11th ranked CCNY. The fourth ranked school, UTEP, lost 108-80 on it's homecourt to Bradley. The loss had no bearing on the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title as UTEP had already clinched.

Things settled down somewhat over the weekend but 7th ranked Boston College lost to Syracuse 72-57 and 12th ranked Iowa State fell for the second time, 92-72 at Kansas. Despite the two losses to end the conference schedule, Iowa State still was crowned Big 8 regular season champion.

BIG TEN RACE GOING DOWN TO THE WIRE
You can't ask for a better race than the Big Ten is providing fans this week. With 2 games to play no less than 5 teams have a shot at the championship. Ohio State, Illinois and Purdue all sit at 10-6 while Iowa and Indiana sport 9-7 records.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
IRONMEN STEAL WINS FROM LEAGUE LEADERS
The lowly Pittsburgh Ironmen had the unlikely distinction of being the league's surprise team of the past week. The West Division cellar-dwellers won 3 of their 4 games including homecourt victories over both division leaders. On Monday team scoring leader Colby Gunther had 13 points to lead the Ironmen to a 66-58 victory over Washington. Two nights later John Abramovic netted 16 points while Gunther chipped in 15 in a 72-64 win over Chicago. Pittsburgh would extend the streak to 3 wins with a 69-52 victory in Toronto on Friday before it ended the next night in Providence. At 15-30 on the season Pittsburgh has no illusions of making the playoffs but if they can play at the same level as this past week they could make life difficult for some of the clubs that do have playoff aspirations.

Chicago became the second team to reach the thirty win mark joining East Division leader Washington. After Monday's embarrassment in Pittsburgh, the Stags took out their frustrations on Providence and Boston. Max Zaslofsky poured in a game high 19 points in an 83-58 flattening of the Steamrollers on Thursday and three nights later 5 Stags players reached double-figures in a 71-53 win over Boston. Chicago's lead over second place St. Louis in the West Division now sits at 3.5 games. Washington, which lost 2 of three games this week, still leads Philadelphia in the East by 5.5 games.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
CAN ROCKET LAUNCH 50 IN 50 AGAIN?
With 5 goals in his last 4 games fans in Montreal and around the National Hockey League are watching closely to see if Maurice 'Rocket' Richard can reach the 50 goal mark in 50 games as he did 2 seasons ago. Richard scored 2 goals in a 6-1 win at Chicago on Wednesday and added 2 more in a 3-3 tie with the Maple Leafs on Saturday. That gave him a total of 46 goals in his first 47 games but the Rocket failed to light the lamp in a 3-2 loss in Boston yesterday. Montreal's next two games are at Detroit next Saturday and home to Toronto on Sunday.

With the schedule expanded to 60 games it is all but assured Richard will surpass his NHL record 50 goals scored in 1944-45 but while he will never admit it, everyone knows the Rocket wants to get 50 in his first 50 games. Some had felt the previous 50 goal season was a little tainted because many of the games best players were in the armed forces at the time and the NHL talent was diluted. Last season Richard slumped to 27 goals but with 12 goals in his first 8 games this season it was clear Richard was a man on a mission.

Richard's team has not looked like it was on the same mission through much of this season. After a 7-0-1 start the Canadiens have just 13 wins in their last 40 games and are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in 5 years.

BOXING NEWS
PATERSON WANTS FLYWEIGHT TITLE SHOT AFTER WIN OVER DADO
Englishman Jackie Paterson has his eye on fellow Brit Teddy Gardner's World Flyweight Title after an impressive win in the Philippines last week. Paterson won a split decision over Little Dado to improve his ranking to third Worldwide in the Flyweight Division. For Paterson the win avenges a loss to Dado in the postwar title tournament and improves his overall record to 20-2. Paterson won the British Flyweight title over Irishman Rinty Monaghan last September and is hopeful of getting a showdown with Gardner in the fall.

The 27 year old Dado suffered his third straight dissappointing outcome. He fought to a draw with Teddy Gardner in Japan last September in the final of the Flyweight postwar tournament and then suffered a controversial loss in the rematch. Dado was penalized 4 points by the British referee in the bout and that allowed Gardner to win the decision by 2 points on two of the cards and just one point on the third. Dado, who falls to 19-4-2, had hoped a win over Paterson would force Gardner to give him a rematch, something Gardner had said he had no plans to do. Instead Dado appears to be on his way down rather than up in the division.

Flyweight is the one division in which the United States has no presence whatsoever. The highest rated American flyweight is San Jose native Jackie Jurich and he is ranked 12th in the world.

Below are the top 10 Flyweight Boxers:

Just wanted to let those of you folllowing this know that there will be a brief break. I may get another issue out in over the weekend but I am involved in another project at the moment so beyond the next issue there will be a short hiatus. However, I will definately be continuing this dynasty once I have completed my other obligations.

IKE WILLIAMS RETAINS LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE
CHAMP STOPS JOE BROWN WITH THIRD ROUND KNOCK OUT
World Lightweight Boxing Champ Ike Williams had a relatively easy time defending his title against an up-and-coming pugilist from New Orleans named Joe Brown. Williams improved his record to a perfect 19-0 with a third round knock out of the challenger Friday night at Madison Square Garden. 17 of Williams' wins have come via knockout including all 3 of his title defenses.

Brown tasted the canvas early in the first round as the champ surprised him with a wicked hook. He managed to recover enough to finish the round and then spent a dull second round wrestling with the champ. In the third round Williams stunned Brown with a combination midway through and then finished him off in the closing seconds. The 21 year old Brown sees his record fall to 12-3 but suffers in his first loss in 9 bouts. Brown has outstanding potential and could be factor in the division down the road but at this stage of his career he simply bit off more than he could chew in challenging Williams.

Williams, a 24 year old from Trenton, New Jersey will likely face Philadelphia native Bob Montgomery in his next title defense. Montgomery is 10-0 but aside from Vic Patrick has not faced any difficult competition. Prior to meeting Williams, Montgomery will have to get by 6th ranked contender Maxie Docusen. The two are scheduled to fight in the spring.

Here are the top 10 LIGHTWEIGHTS
Code:
CHAMP IKE WILLIAMS 19-0 Trenton, New Jersey
2 Bob Montgomery 10-0 Philadelphia
3 Enrique Bolanos 14-1 Mexico
4 Rudy Cruz 13-1 Los Angeles
5 Jimmy Carter 14-4 New York City
6 Maxie Docusen 7-1 New Orleans
7 Vic Patrick 11-3 Sydney, Australia
8 Mario Trigo 13-4 Torreon, Mexico
9 Joe Brown 12-3 New Orleans
10 Art Aragon 13-4-1 Los Angles
On the undercard Luis Galvani of Cuba improved his record to 30-4-1 with a split decision victory over Manny Ortiz. Galvani is now considered the number 1 ranked challenger in the Bantamweight division and it is just a matter of time before he gets a shot at champion Fernando Gagnon. As for Ortiz, it is the second straight loss after he went 37-0-2 in the post war tournament. Ortiz lost on points to Gagnon in the final of the post war tournament.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
OHIO STATE FALTERS, ILLINOIS AND PURDUE SHARE BIG 10 TITLE
Purdue and Illinois each came up with a pair of victories in the final week to earn a share of the Big Ten regular season title. The Fighting Illini thumped Ohio State 102-55 in the season finale for both clubs. That loss, coupled with a 3-point defeat at the hands of Northwestern earlier in the week, not only cost the Buckeyes a shot at the conference title but it also dropped them out of the top 25 for the first time this season.

The SEC season also came to an end this week as Kentucky topped Vanderbilt and Tennessee to complete a 17-1 march through the conference. The Wildcats, at 29-2 overall, continue to be the number 1 ranked team in the nation and assured of a 1-seed in the NCAA tournament.

Speaking of tournaments the excitement begins next week as all 31 conferences in Division 1 hold their respective tournaments. At stake for the conference tournament winners is an automatic berth in the National Tournament. The 64 team field will then be filled with 33 at-large teams.

GARDNER AND COUSY HIGHLIGHT ALL-FROSH TEAM
Notre Dame center Ryan Gardner and Holy Cross guard Bob *Cousy head the National All-Frosh team which was announced yesterday. Gardner, who averaged 14.3 ppg and 8.9, played over 30 minutes a game for the Fighting Irish. The 6'8" native of Warrenton, Georgia was also named the college freshman of the year by the NCAA. (TSN will announce it's allstar teams and MVP's following the National Tournament)

Holy Cross guard Bob *Cousy made the Eastern Independant all-conference team as a freshman and led the conference with 8.0 assists per game. Cousy started every game in the Crusaders backcourt and averaged 10.4 ppg.

Other members of the all-frosh team are Oklahoma A&M forward Jack *Shelton who averaged more than 10 points and 10 rebounds per game while starting every game as a freshman. Small forward Michael Quary of Syracuse. The Fredrick, Maryland native scored 11.4 ppg. Rounding out the team is Harvard guard Valmy Payne who scored 13.4 ppg and added 4.9 assists per contest. The native of Daphne, Alabama is also a candidate for the All-Academic team.

Here is the 1947 National All-Frosh Team

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
VETERAN QB'S ON FREE AGENT MARKET
(EDITOR'S NOTE - I know free agency was not a part of the NFL at this stage but it is a part of TPF, the engine I use to sim the football and it also adds more content for my articles so I will document it as if free agency was a part of the era.)

Vaughn Diedrick, who led Houston deep in to the playoffs, highlights the list of available free agents that NFL clubs will begin bidding on this week. The veteran signal caller is one of three relatively big name quarterbacks who will test free agency. The others include Cecil *Isbell, who packs his bags and leaves Green Bay, and Keith Reeves who was let go by the Jets.

Diedrick, who graduated from Western Kentucky 15 years ago, has started every game in Texans history. He suffered through the worst regular season of his career before an outstanding playoff performance that helped the Texans to within one game of the League Championship.

Not resigning Diedrick means the Texans will definately be in the market for veteran QB or will use their number one pick on one. None of the three quarterbacks on the Houston roster at the present time have ever taken a snap in a regular season game.

Isbell has spent 6 seasons with the Packers but injuries or inconsistant play always seemed to prevent him from breaking out. The 10th year pro from North Carolina will likely catch on as a backup somewhere. Green Bay will likely turn the reigns over full-time to Jordan Montana. The third round pick out of Stanford started 8 games for the Packers last season.

Many were surprised the Jets did not resign Keith Reeves but the former Tulane star has looked progressively worse in each of his 3 NFL seasons. He threw a career high 24 interceptions a year ago. Reeves is a restricted free agent so there is a chance he may remain with the Jets.

Justin Jackson is a name to keep an eye on. There seems to be plenty of interest in the former Jacksonville starter, particularily from San Diego and Miami. The Jags have decided to give the starting job to Tommy Bledsoe and felt they could not afford to keep Jackson as well.

Other players who will get plenty of attention include former Detroit defensive lineman Frank Sharpe who had 8 sacks last season and ex-Houston DE Reggie Benson who had 7 sacks.

TOP PROSPECT GRAHAM TOO BUSY TO FOCUS ON DRAFT
Most college football stars with their eye on an NFL career are spending all of their free time focusing on improving their draft status. However, Northwestern quarterback Otto Graham, a likely first round pick, says football is the furthest thing from his mind right now.

You see Graham is much more than just the star quarterback at Northwestern. He also has lettered in baseball and is a key component of a Wildcats basketball team that is hoping to make it's second ever postseason appearance. Graham, a guard, has appeared in 28 games and is averaging 13.4 ppg and 5.0 rebounds.

"I am hopeful that I can make football my career," explained Graham, "but it can wait until basketball season is over. I want to focus entirely on helping this school get into a tournament, and hopefully it's the NCAA's."

When Graham was a little used freshman in 1944 the Wildcats made it all the way to the Sweet 16 in the one and only postseason tournament invitation in school history. It will likely take a conference tournament title to get the 16-12 Wildcats in to the NCAA tournament but the NIT seems like a realistic possibility and for a school that has just 1 tournament appearance in 15 years it will be more than enough.

It is on the gridiron where Graham really shines. Despite playing for a terrible 3-5-1 Northwestern team this season, Graham threw 26 touchdown passes and passed for over 3000 yards. His performance in workouts for scouts only served to enhance his status and it is a near certainty that he will be picked in the top 10.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
SPRING IS IN THE AIR. CAMPS TO OPEN THIS WEEK
Hard to believe but baseball season is just around the corner. Twelve of the 16 clubs will open spring training at the end of the week with the remaining four getting into action Monday.

While spring training games will begin in the next couple of weeks we still have a lot of time until the real thing. The regular season opens Sunday April 16th with the defending National League champion Pittsburgh Pirates entertaining the St Louis Cardinals while the New York Yankees will be home to the visiting St Louis Browns.

You can bet their will be plenty of attention focused on Ebbetts Field the following day as Jackie Robinson is expected to make his major league debut in the Dodgers lineup against the Boston Braves and become the first player to break the color barrier.

LET'S DANCE - IT'S TOURNEY TIME
NCAA BRACKETS ANNOUNCED AS CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS PROVIDE SOME SURPRISES
No surprise that Kentucky, Oregon and Holy Cross each were named a 1-seed for the NCAA tournament but the final number one was a bit of a shock. Many had expected Missouri Valley Champion Texas-El Paso to get a number one but instead San Francisco rode a strong PCC North tournament win to the top seed in the West Region. A complete list of matchups for both the NCAA and NIT tournaments can be found in the stats and standings section at the bottom of this issue.

Here is conference tournament wrap up of all 31 conferences.

ACC - Top seed South Carolina fell in the semi's to set up a North Carolina vs North Carolina State final. The Wolfpack prevailed 85-74 as senior forward Javan Faust led State with 19 points. Ranked 16th in the TSN polls, NC State is a 5th seed in the South Region and meets Syracuse on Thursday. South Carolina ( 9 seed in the West), Maryland (11 seed East) and North Carolina (12 seed East) also make the NCAA's. Wake Forest had to settle for an NIT berth

AMERICA EAST - Top seed Miami beats Tennessee-Chattanooga 79-61 in the finals. The Hurricanes are the only team to make the NCAA's and as a 5th seed play North Carolina in the East on Friday. Florida State makes the NIT but Tenn-Chattanooga is done for the year despite a 20-12 season.

ATLANTIC 8 - Top seed Fordham beat number 2 La Salle 78-67 in the final. Fordham, ranked 25th in the nation is the only NCAA tourney representative from the conference. They are a 7th seed and will face Harvard on Thursday in the East Region. 4 conference members made the NIT: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, La Salle and Temple

BIG 8 - Regular season champ Iowa State handily beat number 6 Nebraska 82-63 in the finals. Third seed in the west region Iowa State will open Friday against Florida A&M. Oklahoma A&M is the only other member of the conference to make the tourney. The Cowboys get in despite winning only 15 games on the season. It marks their 8th straight appearance in the tourney and 13th in 15 years. Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas make the NIT.

BIG EAST - Top seeded Georgetown disposed of Seton Hall 80-54 in the title game. The conference will have 5 representatives in the NCAA tournament. Joining the 4th seeded Hoyas (west region) will be Boston College ( 2nd South), Seton Hall (8th East), Syracuse (12th South) and Providence (12th Midwest)

BIG SOUTH - UNC-Asheville earned the conferences only postseason berth with a 94-89 win over Liberty in the championship game. A 14th seed in the East, the Bulldogs will face Notre Dame in the opening round. UNC-Ashville has won the conference tournament 4 times in the past 5 years but has failed to win a game in the NCAA's.

BIG 10 - Purdue won the conference tourney by beating Iowa 79-73 in the title game a day afer the Hawkeyes knocked off regular season champ Illinois. The big loser was Indiana's who suffered a loss on Thursday that ultimately cost them an NCAA bid. The Hoosiers are the sole Big 10 representative in the NIT. 4 Big 10 clubs land in the NCAA's including Illinois (4th seed Midwest), Purdue (6th seed Midwest), Ohio State (9th seed Midwest) and Iowa (11th seed South).

BIG WEST - Idaho beat UNLV 76-71 to earn the automatic berth in the NCAA's. A 15th seed, Idaho will play USC Thursday in the Midwest Region. UNLV gets it's first postseason appearance in 13 years with an invite to the NIT

BORDER - Arizona gets it's second straight conference title with an 83-72 win over Montana in the title game. The reward for the Wildcats is a matchup with 2nd Seed UTEP in the West Region. Arizona State will also play in the postseason, meeting Bradley in the NIT.

COLONIAL - Old Dominion beat Hofstra 70-60 to earn the conferences automatic NCAA bid. A 12th seed, Old Dominion meets Stanford in the West Region. It will be the Monarchs 4th NCAA appearance.

EASTERN - Holy Cross hammered a worn out New York University squad 98-58 in the title game. Junior forward Phil *Farbman had 25 points for the Crusaders while freshman guard Bob *Cousy had 11 assists. NYU won a tough 96-95 double overtime victory over CCNY in the semifinals. NYU's tournament hopes suffered a serious blow in that game when their best player Dolph *Schayes suffered a broken wrist that will end his season.

Holy Cross, ranked 2nd in the TSN polls, is a number 1 seed in the East and next to Kentucky the favourite to win the entire tournament. NYU gets a 2 seed in the East but the loss of Schayes may make them ripe for an upset. CCNY heads out west to grab a 3 seed in the tourney.

HORIZON - Indiana State earned the automatic bid with a 91-77 win over Depaul in the conference title game but at 26-8 on the season the Sycamores were in regardless. A 5th seed in the Midwest, it will be Indiana State's 9th NCAA tournament in the past 10 years. Illinois-Chicago will represent the conference in the NIT's.

IVY LEAGUE - Cinderella Dartmouth, just 11-21 on the year, shocked everyone by win the conference tournament to earn the school's first NCAA bid. On Friday the Big Green upset 2nd seed Harvard 86-75 while top seed Princeton also fell, 64-61 to Yale. Wins over Columbia on Saturday and Pennsylvania Sunday gave the Big Green a ticket to the dance. The stay will likely be shortlived as Dartmouth, a 16 seed, draws #1 Oregon in the Midwest. Harvard and Princeton also make the NCAA's while Brown gets an NIT invite.

METRO-ATLANTIC - Another surprise winner as 7th seed Niagara topped #4 Canisius 93-81 in the title game. The Purple Eagles draw #1 Holy Cross in the East Region on Thursday.

MAC - A last second basket by junior forward Sam Kreider gave Akron a 72-70 win over Miami of Ohio and their second ever NCAA appearance. The Zips are a 14th seed in the West and will play CCNY. Miami got an NIT invitation.

MIDEAST ATHLETIC - Florida A&M beat Marshall 90-67 to earn an automatic NCAA bid. It will be their third trip to the NCAA's and they will be a 14th seed in the Midwest. Delware State, who won 25 games this season but lost to Florida A&M in the tournament semi-finals, will also get an NCAA invitation. A 9th seed in the East, they meet Seton Hall to begin the tourney on Thursday.

MID-CONTINENT - Everything went as expected as top seed Valparasio trimmed number two Illinois State 81-76 in the conference championship game. Valparasio gets the only postseason bid and as a 13 seed in the Midwest, meets Illinois on Friday.

MID-LAND - Richmond, ranked 13th Nationally claimed the conference tournament title with an 81-73 win over Middle Tennessee State. Both clubs qualify for the NCAA's as does Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers, ranked 24th in the nation get a 7 seed in the South and will play California. Richmond, a 4 seed, plays George Washington also in the South Region while Middle Tennessee State is a 7th seed and plays Wyoming in the Midwest. Georgia State was also selected for postseason play as the Panthers make the NIT field.

MIDWEST - Notre Dame claimed the conference title with an 81-69 win over 6 seed Pittsburgh in the final. The Irish are ranked 11th in the country and get the 3 seed in the East where they will open against UNC-Ashville. A dissappointing season for the conference as Louisville is the only other team to qualify for postseason play. The 16-13 Cardinals made the NIT.

MISSOURI VALLEY - UTEP is now ranked 5th in the country after beating Drake 84-70 in the MVC tournament championship. Many felt the Miners were worthy of a 1-seed in the tournament but they had to settle for the second seed in the West where they will open against Border Conference champ Arizona. Drake also made the NCAA's and will be seeded 6th in the East. First up for the Bulldogs in Maryland. Bradley, Creighton and Wichita State all made the NIT field.

OHIO VALLEY - Tennessee Tech surprised regular season champ Eastern Illinois 86-78 in the title game so the Golden Eagles will be making their fifth trip to the NCAA's. A date with the number 1 team in the country, Kentucky, means it is extremely unlikely Tech gets its first ever tournament victory this time around.

PATRIOT - Boston University won the conference postseason berth with a 92-88 win over Northeastern in the title game. BU will play New York University in the East Region. Regular season champ Colgate and Northeastern make the NIT.

PCC NORTH - San Francisco earned itself a 1 seed in the NCAA's with a title in the PCC North tournament. The Dons stopped cinderella St. Mary's 79-72 in the championship game. 4 PCC North teams make the NCAA's: San Francisco plays East Carolina in the West Region Washington State as a 6 seed and Washington as a 9 seed both head to the South Region. The Cougars meet Iowa while the Huskies draw Baylor. Despite a loss to St. Mary's in the conference quarterfinals, Oregon still gets the 1 seed in the Midwest and the Ducks open against Dartmouth.

PCC SOUTH - Like their counterparts to the North, the PCC South will send 4 teams to the NCAA's. UCLA, which won the conference title with a 77-58 thumping of rival USC, earns the 6th seed in the West and will open against Princeton. Stanford is seeded 5th in the West and will start with Old Dominion. USC gets the second seed in the Midwest and begins with Idaho while California heads to the South region where the 10th seeded Golden Bears open against Western Kentucky.

SEC - Kentucky finished a 32-2 season with an 97-66 win over second seed Florida in the SEC title game. The Wildcats are ranked number 1 in the country and will host 16 seed Tennessee Tech in round one of the South Region. Three other SEC teams are also heading to the Big Dance: Florida is seeded 4th in the East and begins with Texas A&M, Auburn is the 8th seed in the West and starts against South Carolina while Alabama as an 8th seed in the Midwest faces Ohio State. LSU and Georgia both earned trips to the NIT.

SKYLINE - Fresno State, Colorado State and Wyoming all earned NCAA berths. Colorado State won the conference title beating Wyoming 85-77 and forced the selection committee to take 3 teams from the Skyline. Had Wyoming or Fresno State won the automatic bid than just two teams from the conference would have been selected.

Colorado State is a 14 seed in the South and faces New Orleans. Wyoming earns the 10th seed in the Midwest and starts against Middle Tennessee State while Fresno State as the 10th seed in the West opens with TCU. Utah made the NIT.

SOUTHWEST - Another case of a surprise winner in the tourney giving the conference an extra team in the NCAA. Bubbleteam Texas A&M guaranteed itself a berth with wins over top seed TCU in the semi finals and 3rd seed Baylor in the tournament championship game.

A&M is a 13 seed in the East and starts against Florida. Texas Christian gets the 7th spot in the West and begins with Fresno State while 8th seed Baylor meets Washington in the South Region. Texas Tech and Arkansas are both going to the NIT but will face each other in a surprise opening round pairing.

SOUTHERN - VMI won 22 games this season but misses the NCAA's after a 101-73 loss to 3rd ranked George Washington in the finals of the Southern Conference tournament. George Wshington gets the 13th seed in the South and will face Richmond. Instead of a chance to repeat their tournament heroics of 3 years ago when they made the Sweet 16, VMI is forced to settle for an NIT berth for the 3rd year in a row. Davidson also makes the NIT despite a first round loss in the conference tournament.

SOUTHLAND - Top seed the University of Houston topped Stephen F. Austin 77-57 to win the conference tournament and earn the third NCAA appearance in school history. A 13 seed, Houston plays Georgetown in the West Region.

SUNBELT - East Carolina surprised 9th ranked nationally New Orleans 80-75 in the Sunbelt title game and both teams make the NCAA's. New Orleans gets the 3 seed in the South and begins with Colorado State while Eastern Carolina, with a 14-18 record on the year, is a 16 seed and plays San Francisco in the West Region. For the Pirates it will be just their second-ever tournament appearance with the first coming 10 years ago. Alabama State and Charlotte both make the NIT.

SWAC - Mississippi Valley State, with an 11-21 record on the season, came within 2 points of their first NCAA berth. The bottom seed in the SWAC knocked off top seed Southern University in the quarterfinals, dooming the Jaguars to an NIT berth. Grambling was no challenge for the Delta Devils in the semi's but the clock finally struck midnigh Sunday as Jackson State trimmed Mississippi Valley State 90-88 in the championship game. Jackson State will be a 15 seed in it's second ever NCAA appearance and will play Boston College in the South Region.

TSN's FINAL FOUR PREDICTION
EAST - Holy Cross
SOUTH - Kentucky
MIDWEST - USC
WEST - UTEP

RIPE FOR A FIRST ROUND UPSET - NYU. The loss of center Dolph Schayes coupled with the stress of a tough Eastern Conference tournament leaves New York ripe for an upset. If 15 seed Boston College doesn't pull it off in on Thursday than the Fordham-Harvard winner may turn the trick Saturday.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
WITH 3 WEEKS TO PLAY POST-SEASONS BERTHS ALL BUT DECIDED
There are still 3 weeks remaining in the Basketball Association of America's inagural season but only 1 of the 6 playoff spots remains up for grabs.

In the West Chicago has a 2 game lead on St Louis in the battle for top spot. The Cleveland Rebels are all but assured the final playoff berth. Washington and Philadelphia will finish 1-2 in the East but third place is still wide open. The New York Knickerbockers are 4 victories ahead of the Providence Steamrollers and have a game in hand. Despite having 3 of the top 17 scorers in the league, Providence has been in a real funk of late dropping 9 of 10 before finally getting a couple of wins last week. Steamroller guard Ernie Calverley exploded for 29 points to lead his club to a big 82-71 win over the New Yorkers last Thursday. A loss in that game would have pretty much meant the end of Providence's playoff hopes.

Calverly had a big effort in the Thursday win but by far the top performance of the week belonged to league scoring sensation Joe Fulks. The Philadelphia forward had back to back 30 point games in road wins at Toronto and Cleveland. That performance helped boost Fulks league leading points-per-game total to 24.1 on the season.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
ROCKET FIRES FIVE VS LEAFS
A hot streak from Maurice "Rocket" Richard could not have come at a better time for the Montreal Canadiens. The Rocket launched 9 goals this past week including 5 in a 7-2 win over Toronto on Wednesday. The 3-0 week lifted the third place Canadiens 4 points ahead of Boston and 5 up on Toronto in the fight for the final two playoff berths.

After tying his own modern-day mark for goals in a game, Richard scored twice in a 6-2 win over Chicago on Thursday and added 4 more goals in a 6-1 win over Boston on Saturday. Richard has 17 goals in his last 8 games.

With losses to Montreal and Detroit, Toronto remains the odd team out if the playoffs were to start today. The Leafs did manage a win over the first place Red Wings on Sunday, but a Boston victory in New York on the same evening kept the Bruins 1 point up on Toronto in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot. Both clubs have 8 games remaining including a showdown between the two in Boston on Wednesday.

BOXING NEWS AND NOTES
A number of bouts involving top 10 ranked fighters this week but none of the big names were in action.

Jeresey Joe Walcott, the 7th ranked heavyweight in the world, improved to 23-2-2 with a 13th round knock out of Jack Walker. The 33 year old native of Merchantville, New Jersey had little trouble with Walker in the 15 round bout at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Walker, a 27 year old from Columbus, Ohio, drops to 20-4 with the loss.

Joey Maxim is slowly moving up the lightheavyweight ladder after winning a unanimous decision over Bob Murphy on the same San Francisco fight card. Maxim is now 27-10 while Colorado native Murphy falls to 23-8 and drops out of the top 10 in his division.

Honolulu native Carl Olson is now the 6th ranked middleweight after improving his career record to 25-8-2 with an unanimous decision over Californian George Duke. Duke's record drops to 23-13-2.

Canadian Lightweight champ Arthur King disposed of his Australian counterpart Vic Patrick in a bout in Vancouver, British Columbia. King is 14-2 and ranked 8th in the world, a spot previously held by Patrick. The fighter from Sydney is 11-4 and has dropped his last two decisions including a November loss to top ranked contender Bob Montgomery.

Cocoa Kid of Puerto Rico defeated Miami native Bobby Dykes in a welterweight tilt from Tampa. Kid, at 24-3-1, is now considered the 7th best welterweight fighter in the world.

CHARGERS HOPE JACKSON IS ANSWER TO THEIR QB TROUBLES
In what they hope will end the revolving door at quarterback, the San Diego Chargers have invested 37 million dollars, including an 18 million dollar signing bonus on Justin Jackson. It is, in the opinion of most observers, a huge gamble.

A year ago the San Diego Chargers used 4 different starting quarterbacks including Damoene Taylor who started 8 games and Leon Jones who looked good in 3 starts. Both will be back will fight for the backup role.

Jackson has all the tools but he he has missed 15 games over the past 3 seasons with injuries. A second round pick out of Nevada-Las Vegas, Jackson has been the Jaguars starter for the past 4 seasons but did not manage to get the club into even a single playoff game. However, he may be a perfect fit in San Diego where offensive co-ordinator Gary Davis runs the west coast offense - something Jackson seems far more suited to then the vertical passing game employed by Jacksonville.

Like Jackson, the Chargers have not made the playoffs in the past 4 seasons. Can they both end that streak this year?

RAIDERS DEFENSE GETS BIG BOOST WITH SHARPE SIGNING
The Bay Area made plenty of noise in the first few days of free agency signing as both the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers were quite busy.

The Raiders inked one of the most talented defensive tackles in the game with the signing of former Detroit Lion Frank Sharpe. Sharpe, a 6th year pro, had 8 sacks for the Lions last year. His talent has never been questioned but his work ethic and durability often have been. When he wants to Sharpe is an unstoppable force on the defensive line.

Across the Golden Gate Bridge the San Francisco 49ers announced two signings designed to shore up their line. He is not as talented as Sharpe but the 49ers are very happy with the signing of former Houston Texan DT Reggie Benson. Benson is the antithesis of Sharpe, a durable player with a burning drive to succeed. Benson is coming off the best season of his career. San Francisco upgraded the offensive line with the signing of former UCLA and St Louis Ram tackle George Derby. The 5th year pro started 14 games a year ago.

Other signings include:

The Denver Broncos solidified their offensive line with the signing of ex-Giant guard Dave Ramsey. A former first round pick Ramsey has spent his entire 6 year career with New York, starting all 16 games each of the last 4 seasons. Ramsey will take over for the retired Justin Williams.

Curvin Schafrath has left the Philadelphia Eagles to sign with Tennessee. Schafrath had 58 catches including 6 touchdown grabs a year ago.

The Jaguars improved their defensive line with the signing of DT Reggie Howard. Howard had 2 sacks in 12 games for the Lions last season but was bothered by nagging injuries all year. He will be entering his 5th NFL season after being taken bv Detroit in the second round from UCLA.

Kansas City added free safety Horace Flick, who has been a backup in Minnesota the past 5 years. Flick played in just 5 games last season but may be good enough to start in Kansas City where the Chiefs

The Cincinnati Bengals have resigned TE Ron Williams. The third round pick in 1943 has started every game for the Bengals since leaving Virginia Tech. Williams had 37 receptions a year ago.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : March 12th, 1947

ALL 4 NUMBER ONES REACH SWEET SIXTEEN
BUT PLENTY OF OTHER UPSET IN OPENING WEEKEND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT
Each of the four number one seeds had little trouble advancing through the first weekend of the 10th annual NCAA basketball tournament. However, the same cannot be said about a number of other highly touted schools that failed to survive the first weekend. The highest seed to go home early was the East Region's number 2 seed, New York University, a 70-69 loser to 15th seeded Boston University on Thursday. That game was one of many very exciting contests including a pair of double overtime games.

Here is a look at the action from each of the 4 regions.

EAST REGION
The big news occurred on the first day of the tournament when 15th seed Boston University shocked number 2 New York University 70-69 at Providence. The upset was a surprise to many but TSN's pre-tournament report called NYU the club most likely to suffer an upset loss. A season ending broken wrist suffered by sensational sophomore pivot Dolph *Schayes set NYU up for failure and BU took advantage.

Number 1 seed Holy Cross had an easy time with Niagara as freshman Bob *Cousy poured in 17 points and added 10 assists to lead the Crusaders to a 93-61 win. In other Thursday action junior guard Adam Allen had 26 points to lead 7th seed Fordham past Harvard 91-56 while 8th seed Seton Hall eliminated Delaware State 76-70.

Friday night featured a tremendous comeback by Maryland as the 11th seeded Terrapins overcame a 7 point deficiet in the final 3 minutes to tie Drake. Maryland would dominate in overtime and win 88-78. 13th seeded Texas A&M provided an upset by dumping number 4 Florida 84-69 behind 26 points from Martin Osteen and 23 from Duez Adams. Junior guard Fran *Curran had 27 points to pace 3rd seed Notre Dame past UNC Ashville 93-79 and number 5 Miami beat North Carolina 80-68.

On Saturday Phil *Farbman had 20 points and Cousy was credited with 11 assists as Holy Cross eliminated number 8 Seton Hall 86-55. No second upset for Boston University as number 7 Fordham won easily 96-66.

The clock struck midnight for Texas A&M as the 13th seed Aggies lost to 5th seed Miami 80-65. However, number 11 Maryland is still hoping the slipper will fit and get them into the Big Dance. The Terrapins beat number 3 Notre Dame 75-70 to advance to the round of 16.

On Thursday it will be number 1 Holy Cross vs 5th seed Miami while number 7 Fordham takes on 11th seed Maryland on Friday.

SOUTH REGION
Most feel the entire regional event is just a tune-up for Kentucky as the Wildcats head to the final four. On Friday Senior forward Larry Hathaway had 21 points and center Joe *Rocker had 12 boards and 14 points as UK thumped Tennessee Tech 95-53. Second seed Boston College also won easily, topping Jackson State 89-71. California, a 10 seed, upset Western Kentucky 87-78 while another PCC team in 9th seed Washington advanced with an 84-67 win over Baylor.

Thursday gave us probably the most entertaining game of the first round. 11th seed Iowa beat Washington State 92-85 in a double-overtime game that featured a pair of buzzer beating baskets from senior guard Jed Nasser to keep the Hawkeyes alive. 12th seed Syracuse held off number 5 North Carolina State 55-54 while number 14 Colorado State was also an upset winner, beating New Orleans 92-75. The only favourite to win on Thursday was 4th seed Richmond, an easy winner over George Washington 87-64.

Richmond won again on Saturday, stopping 12 seed Syracuse 85-54 while the other matchup was an improbable 11-14 seed affair. Number 11 Iowa easily dispatched Colorado State 88-58 to make the Sweet 16.

Kentucky took care of business Sunday, outscoring number 9 Washington 44-17 in the second half and winning 84-50. Number 2 Boston College also moved forward with an 86-59 win over California.

Coming up this Thursday Iowa will try and keep the magic going against Boston College while Friday it is a 1-4 matchup as Kentucky plays Richmond.

MIDWEST
Dartmouth hung around until midway through the second half and gave them a scare, but number one seed Oregon eventually prevailed 79-67 on Thursday. Number 2 seed USC had a little difficulty with Idaho but also prevailed at the end 73-60 behind 22 points from Mike Issac. The lower seed won the other two games as number 10 Wyoming got 23 points from Marko *Tordovich in an 87-70 win over Middle Tennessee State while 9th seed Ohio State embarrassed defending champion Alabama 83-49.

Just one upset Friday as 12th seed Providence surprised Indiana State 88-63. In other games number 6 Purdue dropped Oklahoma A&M 99-88, 4th seed Illinois won big over Valparaiso 101-58 and 3rd seed Iowa State dumped Florida A&M 93-80.

On Saturday Ohio State took top seed Oregon to overtime but after Buckeyes leader Paul *Huston fouled out the Beavers went on a rampage and won 71-60. Mike Issac had his second straight big game, scoring 25 points to lead number 2 seed USC past Wyoming 86-61.

Sunday belonged to Providence. The 12th seeded Friars knocked off number 4 Illinois 90-75 on the strength of Colvin Boutte's 22 points. In the other game, 3rd seeded Iowa State advanced with a 78-68 win over number 6 Purdue.

This Thursday Providence will try it's luck against number 1 seed Oregon while on Friday it is a 2-3 game with USC playing Iowa State.

WEST REGION
Plenty of excitement in the region's opening game as Princeton forced UCLA to double overtime on the Bruins home court. 6th seed UCLA eventually prevailed 98-91. Senoir forward Chet *McNabb did everything for the Bruins, scoring 29 points and adding 16 boards. In each of the other 3 games on Thursday the higher seed also prevailed. 3rd seed CCNY thumped Akron 84-46, number 4 Georgetown downed Houston 90-71 and 5th seed Stanford prevailed 85-76 over Old Dominion.

Friday number 1 seed San Francisco got 27 points from Alex *Hannum in a 99-68 win over East Carolina. Second seed UTEP dropped Arizona 101-64 as Tam Braggs had 32 for the Miners. Number 7 TCU won 88-69 over Fresno State and 8th ranked Auburn beat South Carolina 70-61 making the west the only region to have each of the top 8 seeds win their opener.

On Saturday we had the first win by a lower seed as UCLA again took advantage of playing in Los Angeles. Chet *McNabb had 21 points and 19 boards in the Bruins 77-74 win over CCNY. UCLA built a 53-36 lead at the half but just barely hung in the final twenty minutes. Johnny *Payak hit a jumper as time expired to give 4th seed Georgetown a 79-78 win over number 5 Stanford.

On Sunday, number one seed San Francisco had no trouble disposing of 8th seed Auburn 87-61. Texas Christian gave UTEP fits in the first half but but eventually the number 2 seed prevailed 88-83.

This week second seed UTEP gets number 6 UCLA in Los Angeles on Thursday while on Friday in Phoenix it will be number 1 San Francisco vs 4th seeded Georgetown.

STEAMROLLERS FLAT PLAY HURTS PLAYOFF CHANCES
The Providence Steamrollers dropped all 3 games on their West Division road trip last week and have all but eliminated themselves from the playoff hunt. With 8 games remaining Providence is 5 wins behind the third place New York Knickerbockers in the BAA East Division. After 8 point losses in St Louis and Cleveland to start the week, the Steamrollers looked like a club just playing out the season in a 90-57 loss in Chicago on Saturday.

The Knickerbockers, meanwhile, lost in Philadelphia early in the week before an impressive effort in a 68-60 win at home against Detroit on Saturday. Washington is one game away from clinching the division after Red Aurebach's squad went 3-0 last week including a 60-52 win over St Louis on Saturday without their leading scorer. Bob Feerick missed the game with the flu but Irv Torgoff came up big in his place, notching a personal best 18 points.

Out West, Chicago enjoys a 3-game bulge over second place St Louis despite the fact the Stags were upset at home by basement dweller Pittsburgh during the week. Cleveland is assured the final playoff spot in the West Division.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
LEAFS LOOK TO BLOOM IN SPRING
After a dreadful month long stretch that saw them win just 2 of ten games the Toronto Maple Leafs have their sights set on a playoff berth thanks to a 4 game winning streak. The Leafs moved 5 points ahead of Boston in the race for the fourth and final playoff berth. Rookie Howie Meeker scored in the final minute to give Toronto a 2-1 win over the Bruins in Boston on Wednesday. Toronto followed that up with a 2-0 home ice win over Chicago on Saturday and a 4-2 win at New York on Sunday. Goaltender Turk Broda was the hero Saturday with 45 saves in the shutout while on Sunday Ted Kennedy led the way with 2 goals. Toronto has 5 games remaining while Boston has 6 to play. Next weekend's home and home series between the two clubs will likely decide who makes the playoffs.

Montreal has all but clinched a playoff berth after some tough sledding. Rocket Richard continues to lead the way scoring in each of Montreal's two wins last week giving him a record 61 goals on the season. Richard has a 7 game goal scoring streak intact and has scored 15 times during that stretch. Bill Durnan recorded his league leading 7th shutout in a 7-0 whitewashing of Chicago yesterday.

BOXING NEWS
GARDNER PUTS WORLD FLYWEIGHT TITLE ON THE LINE NEXT WEEK
World Flyweight champion Teddy Gardner of England is preparing to defend his title this week in London. Gardner, with a postwar record of 16-2-1, will face Japan's Yoshio Shirai who is ranked 4th in the world, on Friday.

After fighting Little Dado to a draw in Japan last September Gardner beat the Phillipino in a controversial rematch in Paris a month and a half later to claim the initial postwar title. It was controversial because Dado clearly won the fight but lost it just barely on the scorecards because he was penalized 4 points in the bout. Dado would have been Gardner's next opponent had he not lost to Jackie Paterson in February.

Shirai, a 24 year old from Tokyo is 11-2-2 with his losses coming to the above-mentioned Jackie Paterson early last year and to Rinty Monaghan last summer which knocked him out of contention for the final postwar playoff. He looked very impressive last September against world number 2 ranked Speedy Akira in a fight for the Japanesse flyweight title that was declared a draw.

In boxing action last week, New Yorker Jimmy Carter moved a step closer towards a date with Ike Williams for the World Lightweight title. The 25 year old Carter easily outpointed 22 year old Los Angeles native Rudy Cruz in a 15 round tilt in Newark. The win improves Carter to 15-4 while Cruz suffers just his second professional loss to go with 13 victories.

In a flyweight bout from Cincinnati hometown hero Pat Iacobucci improved to 24-12-1 with an 11th round knock out lightly regarded Canadian Hubert Gagnier. Iacobucci is considered the 10th ranked flyweight in the world.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
LIONS LOSE ANOTHER DEFENSIVE STARTER
The Detroit Lions defense suffered another blow when middle linebacker Jim Johnson passed on Detroit's offer and instead inked a 4 year deal with the Denver Broncos. The announcement comes less than a week after both Detroit defensive tackles left the club.

Johnson, a 5 year veteran, started all 16 games for Detroit last season after playing the first 4 years of his career in Houston. He had 53 tackles and 4 sacks a year ago.

With the loss of Johnson and tackles Frank Sharpe and Reggie Howard, Detroit has a lot of holes to fill on defense. They ranked 25th in team defense a year ago and if they don't sign or draft an outstanding linebacker and two decent defensive tackles it could be a very long year in Detroit.

The only defensive player the Lions appear close to signing is restricted free agent CB Kelvin Brown from Kansas City. Strictly a nickel back, Brown had 2 interceptions for the Chiefs a year ago and would add depth to the Lions secondary and a minimal cost. If he signs with Detroit the Lions will have to give Kansas City their 7th round draft pick.

BROWNS, EAGLES AND SAINTS AFTER DIEDRICK
Veteran quaterback Vaughn Diedrick, who helped the Houston Texans to the American Football Conference title game, may not be ready to call it quits just yet. After the Texans declined to resign the 37 year old signal caller, Diedrick had reportedly told friends he was ready to retire. However, that will likely change as several teams having been waving large sums of money to get the former Western Kentucky star to stick around another year or two.

The Cleveland Browns, the team that beat Diedrick's Texans in the AFC title game, appear to be the front-runner but Philadelphia and New Orleans are also quite interested in inking him to a deal.

Diedrick endured the worst season of his career last year, completing 52% of his passes but throwing just 15 touchdown passes against 21 interceptions. His 62.5 QB rating was the worst of his career and marked the 3rd straight season it declined. However, he was outstanding in the playoffs including a 345 yard, 3 touchdown effort in a win over regular season leading Denver.

The Browns already have 4 experienced quarterbacks on the roster, including Charley Carpenter who led them to the NFL title game, but Cleveland has little confidence in any of them. Philadelphia has a good young prospect in Ken Neal, who started 9 games in his sophomore season, but the Eagles feel he needs a little more seasoning and a QB like Diedrick would be an ideal tutor. The Saints want Diedrick as a backup to Ryan Boyette after the retirement of Duane Scibelli.

I have had one or two others say that before but it seems to display fine for me. Can others see the standings?

There is also a stock car game I believe I will add to the replay in 1949.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : March 19th, 1947
FINAL FOUR SET : KENTUCKY, HOLY CROSS, USC AND GEORGETOWN
Two teams you would expect to be here and a pair of surprises highlight this years college basketball Final Four. Certainly Kentucky and Holy Cross were at least pencilled in for the trip to Atlanta by most fans when the tournament started and perhaps you could have made a case for USC but Georgetown is clearly the biggest surprise of the tournament.

The Hoyas won the West Regional after knocking off the top two seeds over the weekend. On Friday senior forward Kurtis Austin had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead Georgetown to a surprising 81-71 win over San Francisco. Austin was at it again Sunday as the Hoyas overcame a 5 point halftime deficiet to rally past heavily-favoured UTEP 72-65. Austin led all scorers with 20 points.

USC needed a rally Friday to beat Iowa State. The Trojans trailed by 7 points with 10 minutes to play before pulling out a 74-69 victory. The win came at a steep price however as Trojan leading scorer William *Towery suffered a broken jaw in the game and is unlikely to play again this season. On the weekend USC put an end to Providence's dream run. The Friars had beaten number one seed Oregon Thursday 67-66 on a last second basket but the clock struck midnight for them in the second half vs USC. The Trojans outscored Providence by 22 points in the final 20 minutes and made the final four with a 82-72 win. Guards Mike Issacs with 22 points and Andre Roemer with 17 led the Southern Cal attack.

Kentucky cruised to the South Region title with a 70-49 win over Richmond in the semis and a 65-49 victory over Boston College in the regional final. Holy Cross survived a scare against Miami before pulling out an 86-82 win in the East Region semifinal. The final two days later against an underdog Maryland squad was a laugher - Holy Cross won 110-51 behind Reggie Filer's 28 points and 11 assists from freshman Bob *Cousy.

FINAL FOUR PREVIEW

GEORGETOWN HOYAS
At 32-7 the Hoyas were ranked 14th in the TSN national poll. With a 14-3 record Georgetown won the Big East regular season title and also claimed the conference tournament with a 80-54 win over Seton Hall in the championship game. After a 90-71 win over Houston to open the West Regional, the 4th seeded Hoyas squeked out a 79-78 win over #5 Stanford to reach the Sweet 16. Wins over #1 San Francisco and #2 UTEP got them into the final four.

This is the first time Georgetown reaches the final four since the tournament began in 1933-34. In their two previous trips Georgetown lost in the second round with the most recent being in 1938. Georgetown lost in the NIT title game in the inagural tournament in 1934. On two other occassions (1938,1942) the Hoyas reached the NIT final four. Georgetown missed postseason play entirely the past two seasons and has made just two NIT appearances since 1940.

USC TROJANS
With a 26-6 overall record this year the Trojans finished the season ranked 6th in the TSN poll. USC lost the PCC South Conference tournament title game 77-58 to cross-town rival UCLA. During the conference regular season, USC's 10-4 record was good for second place - one game back of California. A 2-seed in the Midwest Region, Southern Cal easily handled Idaho 73-60 and Wyoming 86-61 during the opening weekend. A 74-69 win over Iowa State moved the Trojans into the elite 8 where they topped 12 seed Providence 82-72 to make the final four. The Trojans have made the NCAA's 7 straight seasons with their best effort prior to this season being a trip to the elite 8 a year ago.

The big challenge USC will face is playing without their leading scorer in center William *Towery who suffered a broken jaw against Iowa State. His replacement, freshman Joe *McNamee managed just 5 points in the win over Providence.

KENTUCKY WILDCATS
Number one practically from the opening week of the season, the Wildcats breezed through the Southeast Conference with a 17-1 record and won the conference tournament. With a 36-2 record on the season they are the overwhelming favourite to win it all. Despite having 12 NCAA tournament appearances the Wildcats have yet to win it all. Last season they came within one game of their first title, losing the championship game 76-64 to SEC rival Alabama. With 4 starters from last seasons club back Kentucky is by far the team with the most tournament experience.

HOLY CROSS CRUSADERS
A school with a rich tradition, Holy Cross made 5 straight final four appearances between 1940 and 1944, winning it all in 1942 when they were 38-1. However, each of the last two seasons the Crusaders exited in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This season with a 33-5 record Holy Cross finished the season ranked second to Kentucky. The won the Eastern Conference title with a 12-2 record and beat NYU 98-58 to win the conference tournament.

The key to the Holy Cross success has been the play of Eastern Conference player of the year Reggie Filer and the freshman backcourt duo of Bob *Cousy and Frank *Oftring. Cousy made the all-conference team as a true freshman.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
There are still 2 weeks remaining in the inagural Basketball Association of America regular season schedule but all 6 playoff participants have been decided. Washington has clinched the East Division title and will meet the West champion in a best-of-seven semi-final series. It remains to be decided if the Chicago Stags or St Louis Bombers will be the Capitols opponent.

While the two division winners meet in a best-of-7 series the 2nd place team from each division will play the third place club from the opposite division in a best-of-3. Either St Louis or Chicago will finish second in the west and will meet the New York Knickerbockers. The other best-of-3 series will pit the East second place club, the Philadelphia Warriors, against the Cleveland Rebels, who will finish third in the west. The winners of those 2 series will play another best-of-3 with the winner of that one advancing to the league finals. The league final will be a best-of-7 against the better of the two first place clubs.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
BRUINS FADING FROM PLAYOFF PICTURE
The Boston Bruins took 3 of 4 points from the Toronto Maple Leafs over the weekend but a pair of losses earlier in the week all but ended their postseason hopes. The Bruins can mark Wednesday night down as the day their playoff hopes crashed. A 2-1 loss in a must-have game against last place Chicago followed by a 3-0 shutout Thursday at the hands of Harry Lumley and the first place Detroit Red Wings left Boston 5 points behind Toronto in the fight for the fourth and final playoff berth.

The Bruins kept their slim hopes alive with a 3-1 win over Leafs in Toronto on Saturday but Leaf goaltender Turk Broda stole a point Sunday by making 53 saves in the rematch - a 1-1 tie on Boston ice. The Bruins sit 3 points back of Toronto with just two games remaining, home to Chicago on Wednesday and Montreal Sunday. The Leafs have a game in hand and with more wins than the Bruins, Toronto needs just a tie or a Boston loss to clinch the final playoff berth. Toronto is home to Montreal on Wednesday and New York Saturday before the Leafs finish their season in Detroit Sunday.

There is still a battle for second place as New York leads Montreal by two points with each team having 3 games remaining. The second place team will have home ice advantage in the series against the 4th place club while the third place team will meet Detroit in the semi-finals.

It looks like Max Bentley of Chicago will win his second straight scoring title. With 3 games to play Bentley leads Montreal's Rocket Richard by 6 points. Richard is the runaway leader in the goal scoring department. The Rocket has lit the lamp a league record 62 times this season.

BOXING NEWS
GARDNER DEFENDS FLYWEIGHT TITLE - BUT BARELY
England's Teddy Gardner used homefield advantage to retain his World Flyweight title with a unanimous victory over Japan's Yoshio Shirai. Gardner, fighting before a boisterous crowd at Wembley Stadium, looked like he was outboxed by the 24 year old Japanesse fighter but came out ahead on all 3 judges cards. Two of the 3 judges scored Gardner a winner by 2 points with the third giving Gardner just a one point advantage in the bout.

Gardner is no stranger to controversy having won the title last October only because his opponent Little Dado was penalized 4 times in their bout. The win improves the Brit to 17-2-1 while Shirai falls to 11-3-2.

On the undercard Freddie Mills successfully defended his European Lightheavyweight title with a unanimous decision over veteran German fighter Gustave Roth. Mills completely dominated the fight, knocking down the 38 year old German twice and winning virtually every round. Mills is 32-13-1 and has successfully defended the European title 4 times.

ABRAMS STOCK ON RISE IN MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION
Middleweight veteran George Abrams moved a step closer to a possible title shot after outpointing Charley Burley in a tight battle in Boston last Thursday. Abrams, a 30 year old from Roanoke, Virginia, won a unanimous decision but by just one point on each of the judge's cards. He improves to 32-4-2 and is now considered the third ranked middleweight in the world. Pennsylvania native Burley falls to 14-4 but remains in the top 10 in his weightclass.

In other boxing action this week Norman Rubio surprised Izzy Jannazzo in a welterweight bout in New York. Jannazzo falls to 26-3-1 with the loss and it likely ends any chance of him seeing a title shot. Rubio, a 28 year old from Albany, New York, improves to 19-8-2 with the win.

Meanwhile in California featherweight Georgie Hansford improved to 21-12 with a split decision win over Carlos Chavez at the Del-Mar Racetrack near Los Angeles. Hansford is now ranked 7th world-wide among featherweights. Chavez drops to 24-12-1.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFSEASON REPORT
DIEDRICK SIGNS WITH EAGLES
The Philadelphia Eagles have signed veteran quarterback Vaughn Diedrick to a 3-year deal. Diedrick, who led the Houston Texans to within a game of the NFL Championship, will be counted on to guide the Eagles offense this season while acting as a tutor for young QB Ken Neal.

A 1943 first team allstar, Diedrick has struggled the past couple of season but looked like he was back in his glory days during this seasons playoff run. The signing may leave Doug Bass as the odd-man out in Philadelphia. After starting 28 games over his first two seasons, the former second round pick from Miami started just 7 games each of the past two seasons. His contract is low enough that the Eagles may elect to keep him as insurance.
