CONTINENTAL LEAGUE UPDATE

AMON TRADED TO PROVIDENCE
The Providence Ports acquired 17-year old pitching phenom Anthony Amon. The club is ironically being consulted by Reign of Fire Consulting, the firm founded by Centurion Sports Mgt. former magnate Dark Cloud. He doesn't work for the firm, but rumor has it, he urged the team to get the kid pitching.

"He's too young to be sitting in watching in that league," said one source close to DC. "I think he's got too much potential and the only way he's going to learn, is by playing. But most teams would want to keep him for themselves, because they know the majors are just salivating," he added.

However, after eight starts, he was 0-6 with a 14.87 ERA, 18 strikeouts and 21 walks in 29 2/3 innings. "He was rushed out there and I think it was hard. The team isn't good, but they're not the right kind of club for him.

He was later traded to Wyoming Valley, where he became a middle reliever. The jury is still out on how well he'll adjust. The Mountain Cougars are the worst team in the Mays Conference, nine games back of the division lead.

PERRIGO GETS CALLED UP

CAROLINA CALLS UP YOUNG STAR FROM TAXI
The Mays Conference leading Carolina Bombers called up emerging star and 1st rd draft pick Jessie Perrigo today from their taxi squad. Perrigo, 19, has yet to play in a professional game, but says he's expected about being added to the roster.

"I just want to make the club proud of why they signed me," he said. Perrigo will not start immediately, but should see some time during the season," said Manager Buck Williams.

"He's got a lot to learn. Why not learn it up here?" said Williams.

SNAPPERS RESURGENT
The Southern Illinois Snappers are resurgent this season and its thanks in large part to the bat of emerging star first baseman Jordan Hanley. Hanley, 23, is on the way to another fine season in his sophomore campaign in the CL. Hanley is third in the Ruth Conference in batting and third in runs scored so far (3/28/2013)

He says he hopes this catches the eye of major league clubs drafting in July's supplemental draft. "Hopefully, they'll see me as a productive player with a lot of upside," said Hanley.

THE CONTINENTAL LEAGUE DAILY

The Continental Daily
SNAPPING A 17-YEAR DROUGHT
The Southern Illinois Snappers ended a 17 year drought today after capturing The Ring (tm) for the 2013 season. "We're thrilled!" said manager Wally Joyner as he lifted the oversized gold ring in the air.

The Snappers had the second longest drought of any team in the CL, but ended it. The Norfolk Waves remain the club with the longest drought in the Continental League (1990).

Defeating Delaware gave the Snappers their fourth title in franchise history.

HANLEY WINS THE TED WILLIAMS...WILL THE MAJORS COME CALLING?
O'FALLON, ILL. - Snappers First baseman Jordan Hanley won the 2013 Ruth Conference Ted Williams Award as Conference MVP. Hanley increased his batting average to .360, drove in over 30 more runs and improved in his other offensive categories, including steals. That has some murmuring the young star is ready to head to the majors. "We have a number of clubs looking at signing Jordan during the supplemental draft," said Doc Winston, Hanley's agent. "I believe I have the talent to help any one of the major league clubs. I can't wait to play," said Hanley.

Scouts estimate that Hanley should be a late first round or early second round pick. "Winning the Ted really raised some eyes. If he stayed down there another year, some of us suspect he might explode and it would be harder to sign him. I think he's a steal right now," said one NL scout.

THE WIZARD FAILS TO MUSTER MAGIC IN ROOKIE SEASON
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Jessie Perrigo, the 2nd overall pick in the 2012 Continental League Entering Draft was not a factor in helping the Carolina Bombers win the Mays Conference regular season title.

Perrigo, who became the starter during the last month of the season hit an absymal .211 with just 1 homer and 6 RBI in 57 at-bats.

"He'll just need some time to adapt. This is a totally different thing for him," said one CL scout. Few argue that Perrigo will need a few years to adapt to the Continental League, before he can be considered a bonafide star. "He's got a lot of upside, no doubt about that. It'll be if he can use it and put it towards the right things," said Doug Ringwood, a baseball writer in Columbia.

AMON NEEDS "WORK" SAY COACHES
WYOMING VALLEY, PA - Anthony Amon completed a whirlwind tour of the CL this season, finishing off with the Wyoming Valley Mountain Cougars. His record, 1-6 with a 12.03 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 70 innings is considered progress by some. "He's come a lot way," said Mountain Cougars pitching coach Chuck Finley. "I think he'll be fine, he just needs to build up arm strength and confidence on the mound," said Finley.

Amon did have a nice finish to the end of his season. In his second to last start, he was Player of the Game, throwing 8 innings against Oklahoma City, yielding 2 runs and striking out three. Most impressive, he walked no batters. "That game is something he can build on," said Finley.

Player Cards...

Modern Era Players,

Cards will be uploaded later, because they take up an insane amount of space and takes a while to reload.

So, fear not. They are around...I just have to put them up...later.

Otherwise, the site is updated.

Modern Era League

The Continental League site is updated, with player cards and all.

REDS OWNERSHIP CONTEMPLATING MOVING

CINCINNATI (AP)- The Reds are considering a move, reports acquired by the Associated Press say yesterday. The team, which has been hampered by sagging attendance and a lack of progress have prompted ownership to consider selling the club. They have not yet officially made any statements, but have put a number of overtures to potential owners over the past few weeks.

A number of cities including two in Ohio - Dayton and Columbus - have been considered as potential sites for the club. Other potential sites include Kansas City, which has had two previous franchises, has been identified as a potential move site.

"We are against the move of the Cincinnati club," said Board of Governors Bob Costas, who has said he would exercise any rights he had to turn down the move, on the grounds that baseball would be hurt by losing such tradition.

But some baseball fans are saying, it doesn't matter. "Tradition is great, but look at the way teams have moved over the years. If tradition was paramount, the Giants would still be in New York, the Dodgers would've never Brooklyn. Teams change their perspectives, things happen and its a natural progression in the game," said Angels owner Ivie Moreno who moved the Anaheim Angels to Anchorage a number of years ago.

FORMER COUGAR GETS DRAFTED INTO MAJOR LEAGUES

NEW YORK - The scene was all smiles for former Cougar baseball player Jordan Hanley yesterday after receiving word that the Minnesota Twins had drafted him with the 16th overall pick in the major league supplemental draft yesterday.

"I'm so thrilled. I can't explain it," said Hanley at the news. "For so long, I've worked hard at this dream and so, I'm really glad I finally have the opportunity to showcase my talent in the bigs," he said.

Hanley was the last selection in the draft, which takes players from the independent Continental League - a minor league not affiliated with organized baseball - and drafts them into the majors. The talent in the league is considered comparable to that of Triple-A.

"The CL is a lot like what they call a "Quadruple-A" league. A lot of those guys could be playing in the majors, but because of rules, unions and the like, few of them are going to get a shot to play. This draft gives a few guys, like Jordan, a chance to compete and its a great thing," said Cougars coach Mike Pride.

Hanley says he hopes to be an inspiration to other ICC players coming up and knows without his chance here, he would not be where he is today. "All my coaches at ICC were always supportive and helped me when I was trying to make it. They're the reason I'm here today and I really can't thank them enough. Someday, I want to come down and give back, because I'm sure there are other guys in the spot I was," he said.

The only other ICC player to make it to the bigs was former Cleveland Indians star Jim Thome.

Coach Pride says that he expects Jordan will get the chance to star immediately. "Minnesota is a club on the rise. They're in a pennant race and they're using this draft as a way to get some cheap, potent talent for their club. This draft is a gap to having to rush and use prospects in the minors. So they expect a lot, but its says a lot for him that they thought he could be the spark they needed."

An insider close to the draft process for the Twins - which is done via telephone - said the Twins settled on Hanley, after taking a look at his numbers this past season. "The story was, after looking at the year he had, his age and our needs as a club, we decided that he was worth any risk of being a little overmatched to the big league level, for his age and relative experience. We're excited about him coming to the team and were most impressed by the fact that he managed to be a leader for his club in such a short period of time. Ultimately, that and his bat, spoke for themselves."

Hanley expects to join the team next week.

A word on CL imports...

Players coming from the Continental League still have their stats. I tried getting rid of them, but all I can get rid of is their player histories.

At any rate, I'll no longer do the CL draft prior to the start of the modern era season, that way, they'll be clear for the year prior. So the CL is going to stay a year behind the CL. We'll draft, then those players will come over, before the CL season even starts.

I'll list the stats of those players based on the breakdowns at the end of the year, to update on how they're adjusting.

PLAYER UPDATES - August 1, 2013

Ben Hauser, 1B, Nevada
Hauser has been on a whirlwind tour this year, which finally ended in Nevada. He signed a five-year contract extension worth $95 million with the Silverhawks, who are contending in the NL West in just their second season.

.351 BA/18 HR/70 RBI

Alan Hainkel, 3B, Baltimore
(FA, 2017)
.310 BA/19 HR/66 RBI

The O's lead the AL South by three games over Louisville, thanks in part to the steady play of Hainkel, who is probably the best third baseman to hit Baltimore since Cal Ripken, Jr.

Larry McGillicuddy, CF, San Diego
(FA, 2015)
.332 BA/10 HR/ 53 RBI

Leonard Hobbes, SP, London
(FA, 2014)
Hobbes was sent back to London where he played until 2010 (well, with the franchise) after being traded by Washington on July 17th.

8-5, 2.89 ERA, 76 K, 18 BB

Jordan Hanley, 1B, Minnesota
(FA, 2015)
The adjustment for many of the Continental League players to the majors has been rough. Hanley is handling it well, so far, as the Twins are just a game out of first in the AL Central.

.254 BA/1 HR/5 RBI (67 at-bats)

45 minutes north?

I'm guessing it has to be a small college and the only one's that come to mind are Knox or Monmouth.

Where do you go to college?
