Results Game 1, October 11th, 1916, Weeghman Park, Chicago Road Win Lifts Detroit to 1-0 Lead in WS The Detroit Tigers wasted no time taking the lead in the World Series, beating the Chicago Cubs at Weeghman Park by the score of 6-2. The win gives Detroit a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Tigers left-hander Art Nehf threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Detroit used the timely hitting of Rollie Zeider to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Tigers on top, 4-2. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer. "We lost," Chicago manager Tom Loftus said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Weeghman Park in Chicago. "There's nothing like the postseason," said Ruth, "to ramp up the pressure." Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Navin Field in Detroit. Tigers lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 14th, 1916, Navin Field, Detroit One for the Ages: Tigers Beat Cubs on 14th Inning Walk-Off The Detroit Tigers are now one game away from a sweep of the Chicago Cubs after a dramatic walk-off win in the 14th inning at Navin Field. Tigers right-hander Fred Anderson earned praise in the 4-3 victory for a strong outing in which he threw 6.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Detroit holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series. The defining moment came in the bottom of the 14th for Detroit. That's when Bill Rariden hit a run-scoring triple off 28-year-old catcher Jeff Tesreau to win the game. The home crowd went wild. "It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Rariden said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit. Tigers lead series 3-0 Game 4, October 15th, 1916, Navin Field, Detroit Chicago Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1 Already down in the World Series, the Chicago Cubs put on their best show, beating the Detroit Tigers by a final score of 2-1. Eddie Cicotte was special. He threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. Chicago now trails Detroit 3-1 in the best-of-7 affair. Hal Chase, who finished 5th in the NL in runs with 96 in 1906, had a direct impact on the outcome. Chase contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the third inning to put Chicago up, 2-0. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Cubs manager Tom Loftus said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit. Tigers lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 16th, 1916, Navin Field, Detroit World Series to Tigers It was all about winning for the Detroit Tigers -- and win they did. There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball. "We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said designated hitter Babe Ruth, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions." Detroit defeated the Chicago Cubs by a score of 2-1 at Navin Field to take the series 4-1. "Sometimes you get lucky and, sometimes, you make your own luck," said Detroit manager Gil Glynn. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played." Tigers win series 4-1 World Series MVP: DH Babe Ruth (Detroit Tigers) |
