Bout 176 - Joe Bugner versus Cleveland Williams
Round 12 Commentary
As the bell sounds for the final round, it looks as if the scorecards will determine the outcome of this fight. The swelling on the face of Bugner is noticeable, even at a distance. Williams looks to land a jab but misses the mark. That right hand of Williams's definitely packs a wallop and that one landed flush!! That's the punch Williams hoped to land! Bugner looks to be in bad shape after that blow! Bugner grabs Williams. Too much of this kind of thing can have a negative effect on the scoring of the fight. Referee Abainza is all over Williams for head butting at the break and he better clean up his act immediately. Bugner takes a step back and reaches toward his head after suffering what appeared to be an intentional head butt from Williams! Angered, Bugner lunges forward and tries to retaliate with a head butt of his own, but misses as Williams retreats and looks at the referee! Both corners are now screaming at Abainza who has halted the action to admonish the fighters. He better get control of this fight and quickly! Cleveland Williams cranks up the hook and connects to Joe Bugner's jaw, that one had bad intent behind it! Williams steps back as he tries to create some punching room. Williams fires and misses. Cleveland Williams throws a cross to the head, then digs a hook to the body. Williams bulls his way inside and drives home a cross to the body. Bugner misses wildly with the hook. Williams scores with a quick one-two to Bugner's midsection … Williams appears to have this fight under control! Bout 177 - Chris Byrd versus Deontay Wilder
Round 8 Commentary
Referee Assimenios motions the fighters together as the bell sounds to begin Round 8. Wilder eats a short cross from Byrd amd backs away. Neither fighter shows any wear and tear at this point. Wilder misses with the left and then fails to connect with the right as well. Byrd shoots a left to the body. That's a sneaky punch. Wilder has Byrd blocked in! Wilder moves in and connects with a compact uppercut to the head. Byrd just landed a short, clean hook that caught Wilder flush. Deontay Wilder dropped like he'd been shot. The count starts ... Wilder can’t get off the canvas as the count reaches 10! The referee could have counted to 100 if he wanted! Wilder is out cold here in round 8! Here's Billy Jordan with the call ... Bout 178 - George Chuvalo versus Chuck Wepner
Round 10 Commentary
Round 10 begins as the bell sounds. You could feel the breeze after that miss by Chuvalo! Wepner lands the jab but comes up short with a second one right behind it. Wepner traps Chuvalo in the corner! Wepner lets his hands go, but Chuvalo answers right back. Chuvalo has Wepner cornered! Chuvalo pins Wepner's arms. Now they move apart. Both fighters could stand to press the attack a bit more. Both fighters are now flailing away but Chuvalo is definitely landing the better punches. Chuvalo throws a wild overhand right that lands flush! Wepner drops to one knee and will take the count! Ref Milham stands over Wepner and begins counting ... At 6, Wepner rolls over and is trying to push himself up but will he have enough strength and time to do it? 10! George Chuvalo leaps onto the turnbuckle and raises his arms in jubilation as Wepner is counted out! This one ends with a knockout in the 10th round! Let's go to Billy Jordan for the call ... Bout 179 - Randall “Tex” Cobb versus Mike Weaver
Round 11
Cobb looks a bit disgusted as Round 11 gets underway. The fighters exchange power punches at ring center & it looks like Weaver got the best of it. Cobb is trying to avoid shots to the body, but he better get his hands up! Weaver lets his hands go inside, but Cobb protects his body well. Cobb throws the cross and scores to the head of Weaver. A combination to the jaw has Cobb hurt he stumbles forward and he's down!! The count starts ... At 4, Randall Cobb gets back on his feet! He must now take the mandatory 8. Garza is allowing the fight to continue. Cobb looks real shaken to us, however. Cobb is dazed as Weaver looks to put him away! Weaver looks to work the body, but Cobb covers up nicely. Weaver throws a leaping shot that fails to hit the target. The noise is deafening in the arena after that last round. Nothing like a knockdown to get the adrenaline flowing! Round 12 Both fighters look determined as the final round gets underway. Cobb just misses with a huge shot as Weaver chooses the perfect time to suddenly backpedal. Weaver slides into the corner ... Weaver does a great job with subtle movement to avoid Randall Cobb's punches in close. Weaver dips and connects with a hook to the side of Cobb's head. It looks like Cobb has shaken off the effects of the knockdown he suffered in the last round. Weaver throws a cross to the head, then digs a hook to the body. A quick hook to the body by Cobb. Both fighters are throwing but Weaver is scoring more than “Tex” Cobb. Cobb rips off two quick jabs and one finds the mark. Cobb finally lets go of Weaver. The final round concludes and we're going to have to await a decision to find out who won this contest ... We go to the ring where Mark Beiro is ready with the call ... Bout 180 - Gerrie Coetzee versus Jersey Joe Walcott
Round 8
Coetzee looks to be in fair shape as Round 8 gets underway. Coetzee connects with a nasty cross! Walcott brings the cross straight down main street, snapping Coetzee's head back. The fighters are tied up. Gerrie Coetzee tries to extract himself. He gets his arms free. Referee Griffin has to separate the two ... Coetzee rips a hook to the head. And now it appears as if Walcott's cut has been reopened … Walcott is wiping his eye with his glove. Blood is trickling from the cut over Walcott's eye; And it looks like . . . yes . . . Referee Griffin is notifying the timekeeper to stop the clock. He wants the doctor at ringside to take a look at Walcott's facial wound. The doctor is peering at the wound and he's shrugged his shoulders and he's shaking his head - is that a good thing or bad? The damage isn't that bad and Walcott and Coetzee await the signal from the referee to commence firing. Coetzee just absorbed a terrifying shot to the body. Coetzee can't find the range as he tries to work the body. Walcott scores with quick series of shots to the body of Coetzee. Walcott walks into a glancing hook from Gerrie Coetzee. The cut on the eyelid of Walcott is starting to bleed more heavily now as additional damage has caused it to widen The referee wants to get a better look at the cut above Jersey Joe Walcott's eye. Now, he just steps in again and stops the action. Griffin is escorting Walcott over to the ringside doctor to get an opinion on the severity of the cut. After some dabbing and swabbing and talking to the fighter, the doctor has concluded that the fight needn't be stopped. As the round ends, both fighters continue to wing shots. That was another good round of action. Round 9 The bell sounds to start Round 9. Walcott's corner gave his cut on the left eyelid priority during the minute off. Oh! Coetzee catches Walcott coming in with a sweet uppercut! That uppercut has reopened Walcott's previous wound because Walcott is now bleeding once again! Blood is visible once again on the face of Walcott as the cut on his eyelid has reopened. Walcott is blinking, trying to clear his vision. Walcott's pawing at his eye and there may be some blood trickling into that eye from the cut above it. The referee must have noticed because we have a stop in the action as Griffin motions toward the ringside physician. They're going to take a close look at the cut again! And Referee Griffin has halted the bout as the ringside physician has climbed onto the apron. He is taking a real close look at Walcott's cut as his corner looks on. And that's it! Referee Griffin is waving it off. This fight is over! Coetzee wins by TKO due to the severity of Walcott's eye injury! Jeff Connor has the call ... Ladies and Gentlemen! The winner by technical knockout at the 0:18 mark in Round 9 is ... Gerrie Coetzee! Bout 181 - Gerry Cooney versus Nikolay Valuev
Round 11
Referee Keane motions the fighters together as the bell sounds to begin Round 11. Kevin Cunningham seemed to pump up Valuev between rounds. Cooney just landed a short, clean combination that caught Valuev flush. Valuev dropped like he'd been shot. Keane brings his arm down over Valuev as he begins the count ... At 4, Valuev rises to his feet as Keane starts the mandatory 8 count. Keane checks Valuev closely and will allow the fight to continue. Cooney just misses with a huge shot as Valuev chooses the perfect time to suddenly backpedal. Cooney telegraphed that shot and Valuev ducks under it easily. Cooney retreats into a neutral corner. Valuev traps Cooney's gloves under his arms... He won't let go. Referee Keane steps in to break it up. The Arena is shaking as the bell rings to end the round after the knockdown! Round 12 The bell sounds for the last round of the bout. Ref Keane warns Valuev for holding and hitting, although he is doing a lot more holding than hitting. Valuev throws the jab and it lands cleanly. Cooney takes a punishing over hand right to the jaw! Cooney slides into the corner ... Valuev fires and misses. And Valuev hits the deck after a huge cross by Cooney and he looks hurt. The count begins ... Valuev lurches to his feet at the count of 4 but he stumbles and is down on his knees again. At 9, Valuev gets up on his feet! He doesn't look very steady ... Valuev looks to have steadied himself and Keane will allow the fight to continue... Cooney misses wildly with the hook. Cooney lands a powerful uppercut right on the button! Cooney pumps the jab into the face of Valuev. That's it. This fight has gone the distance and now we'll await the official decision ... Round 10 Commentary
Tyson looks to be in good shape as Round 10 gets underway. The swelling on the face of Cooper is noticeable, even at a distance. Tyson is offering minimal head movement as he comes straight forward. Henry Cooper is blocked in his opponents’ corner... Cooper takes a heavy cross downstairs. Tyson bores in determined to maul Cooper … Tyson just landed a short, clean uppercut that caught Cooper flush and Cooper hits the canvas hard! Referee Florian picks up the count from the timekeeper ... At 5, Cooper is up and stares intently at Florian as he delivers the mandatory 8 count. Cooper raises his guard as Florian asks him if he wants to continue. Cooper wants to keep on fighting but he still looks hurt. Tyson is like a human windmill as he tries to take advantage of Cooper's condition and end the fight! Having been sent to the deck in each of the last two rounds Cooper is in big trouble! A combination to the jaw has Cooper hurt he stumbles forward and he's down again!! Florian stands over Cooper and begins the count ... At 6, Cooper is stunned, but he makes it to his feet where he takes the mandatory 8 count. Cooper looks to have steadied himself and Florian will allow the fight to continue ... Mike Tyson picks up the pace sensing he can get Cooper out of there! Florian just screamed at Cooper "Fight back or I'm going to have to stop it!" Wow! That shot landed like a lightning bolt! Round 10
Tucker rushes out at the bell. Whatever his corner said to him seems to have him fired up. Tucker traps Dokes in the corner! That punch caught Dokes clean. He brings his arms up in a defensive posture. Now he pitches forward! Dokes goes down after a delayed reaction to the uppercut by Tucker! Ref Moret picks up the count from the timekeeper ... Michael Dokes is desperately trying to stand as the count hits 3 but he is badly hurt. At 7, Dokes is back up as Moret counts off the mandatory 8. Moret looks closely at Dokes who indicates he is ok, and the fight will continue ... Dokes backs into a neutral corner. Tucker lands a strong uppercut! Dokes's eyes are glazed over after that shot &, he is hurt! Tony Tucker whiffs with the hook. It looks like Tucker has a solid lead at this stage of the fight. And there’s the bell ending Round 10! Round 12 Dokes tries to get the hook into the ribs, but Tucker blocks it. Tucker misses with the left and then fails to connect with the right as well. Dokes bobs and weaves his way inside and lets his hands go, scoring with a hook. Oh! That was a violent straight right by Tucker! Those punches hurt Dokes and he looks to hang on. Dokes is off target with that uppercut. Tucker throws a leaping shot that fails to hit the target. The final seconds of Round 12 expire and this bout is going to go to the scorecards ... Bout 184 - Buster Douglas versus Tony Tubbs
Round 11 Commentary
There's two rounds of boxing left, and it's obvious that Tubbs is going to need a miracle to win this fight. A minute wasn't enough to eliminate or even significantly reduce Tubbs's swelling. Douglas does a great job with subtle movement to avoid Tubbs's punches in close. Douglas scores downstairs with a hard cross. Douglas takes a hook as he tries to work inside. Tubbs fires and misses. A cross from Douglas lands with some authority! Tony Tubbs appears to be stunned! Tubbs seems bothered by the increased swelling around the left eye. Tony Tubbs is trying to put his punches together and he tags Buster Douglas with a nice combination of punches. Tubbs fires a lead right that Douglas manages to avoid. Douglas gets inside and fires a hook to Tubbs's body. A beautiful uppercut to the chin sends Tubbs to the canvas! Ref England motions Douglas to a neutral corner and starts the count ... Tony Tubbs tries to clear his head as England reaches the count of 5. At 9, Tony Tubbs gets up on his feet! He doesn't look very steady ... The fight will go on as England deems Tony Tubbs is fit to conitnue. Tubbs is dazed as Douglas looks to put him away! Douglas rips of a series of hard blows to the head of Tubbs! What's holding Tubbs up? England is watching Tony Tubbs closely and you have to wonder if he's going to wave this thing off soon. Douglas scores with the jab. Douglas won't let Tubbs off the hook, now that he has him hurt with more punches to the head! And it's over!!! England jumps in and wraps his arms around Tubbs!! We await the bell, signaling the start of Round 9. There it is! Some nifty bodywork from Ellis as he scores with several shots from the inside. Ellis has Tillis trapped in the near neutral corner ... Ellis just comes up short with the combination. Tillis's corner is shouting at him to be more aggressive. Tillis goes downstairs with the hook. There's a hard shot off the top of Tillis's head! Ellis has Tillis in trouble, he is hurt and trying to hang on!! Both fighters want to work inside for the moment, as Ellis blasts home a hook. Ellis lands a strong hook! Tillis appears to be stunned! Jimmy Ellis's last punch snapped back the head of Tillis. And it looks like it has also drawn blood! Tillis has suffered a nasty wound on his right eyelid. The gash is bleeding profusely, and its location is almost a sure guarantee to cause trouble throughout the bout. The fighters jockey back and forth and now the referee is going to use this opportunity to step in and call timeout. Referee Jen-Kin is halting this fight. He steers Tillis to his corner and calls the ring doctor. The ring doctor is taking a close look at it ... Tillis's corner is pleading with Jen-Kin. Tate didn't sit in the corner between rounds and he comes out quickly to begin Round 8. Foreman is ready to go too! If the swelling was lessened by Tate's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference. Foreman pins Tate's arms. Now they move apart. Tate pushes Foreman away. Foreman connects with a vicious cross! That hook from Tate snapped Foreman's head back violently! Both fighters are pawing with the jab, trying to find an opening. Tate digs a quick hook into the exposed side of Foreman. Tate tries to go to the body but he can't find an opening. Foreman has Tate pinned! Goodness, what a shot!!! Foreman is known for his tremendous power and that cross to the head was proof. That punch really rocked Tate! Foreman scores with a winging right! Tate's head snapped back violently with that punch! Tate suddenly has a vacant look in his eyes. That's a bad sign. Tate's right eye is turning ugly as the swelling under it worsens. A beautiful hook to the chin sends Tate to the canvas! Referee Rosato motions Foreman to a neutral corner and starts the count ... 10! And the referee signals an end to the fight as the corner men of Tate jump into the ring to help their fallen fighter! Round 12 Commentary
There are 3:00 more minutes of fighting to go in the 12th and final round. Foster's corner is an experienced crew but the swelling he's suffered looks almost as bad as it did before the minute break. If the swelling was lessened by Spinks's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference. Foster lands a vicious hook! Spinks's hurt, that blow stopped him cold! The swelling under Spinks's right eye can't get much worse, as it has now ballooned substantially. The crowd comes to life as both fighters exchange blows, with the advantage going to Foster. Foster is putting his punches together, scoring well with combinations. Spinks lands a wicked cross! Foster is trying to regain his senses after that punch ... This round could well determine the outcome of this fight and it is dead even so far … A short hook to the head by Foster … The swelling around Spinks's right eye is getting messy and his vision has to be obscured. Foster lands a paralyzing hook! Spinks looks stunned! Foster fires a lead right that Michael Spinks manages to avoid. Spinks tries to drop the right hand over the top but Foster ducks under it. Round 7 Commentary
Frazier looks to be in good shape as Round 7 gets underway. If the swelling was lessened by Leon Spinks's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference. That right hand of Frazier's definitely packs a wallop and that one landed flush!! That shot landed square and Leon Spinks felt it, he's in a world of hurt! Spinks looks fatigued. That's going to make him more susceptible to a knockdown. It seems every shot Spinks takes on his right eye makes the swelling worse. Spinks is looking to protect his body and he's leaving his chin wide open! Leon Spinks is going way too low with his punches and Ref Burke has seen enough as he issues a warning. That uppercut from Frazier has some power behind it! Spinks is reeling after that shot! Frazier scores with a winging right! Spinks's head snapped back violently with that punch! There has to be something done about the swelling around Leon Spinks's right eye as it continues to worsen. Frazier connects with a thundering hook and Spinks drops to the canvas! Frazier is ushered to a neutral corner by Ref Burke and the count begins ... At 2, Spinks is in bad shape as he tries to regain his feet. At 6, Spinks makes it to his feet. The bell sounds for the 12th and final round of this fight. Fury got some great advice from Tom Yankello between rounds, let's see if he puts it to use here in round 12. Fury's corner is an experienced crew but the swelling he's suffered looks almost as bad as it did before the minute break. Snipes gets in close and comes straight up to the chin of Fury with an uppercut. Fury lands a smashing cross! Snipes works his way inside and scores with a hook to the body. Fury's swelling isn't getting any better; as a matter of fact it's even more swollen here in round 12. Snipes drives home a wicked hook to the midsection! Fury is clutching his side! Snipes gets the cross through Fury's guard. Fury lets a quick hook go, catching Snipes moving in. Fury has Snipes cornered! Snipes just absorbed a terrifying shot to the body. Golota is off his stool and waiting for the bell to begin Round 4. Referee Perez-Huerta is telling Golota to quit using the shoulder on the break. Golota does it again & Perez-Huerta has seen enough and Golota is going to lose a point for that foul! Smith takes a cross to the ribs. Golota shoots a vicious cross right down the pipe and catches Smith flush! Smith is hurt and he had better reach deep if he's going to continue! Golota is protecting the body nicely as Smith fails to score inside. A cross from Smith just missed. Golota takes a hard cross right on the button and he’s down! Perez-Huerta points Smith to a neutral corner and begins the count over Andrew Golota ... Golota is struggling to regain his feet as the count reaches 4. 10! Thats it! The fight is over and Golota has still not moved as the medical staff rushes in to check on him. James “Bonecrusher” Smith takes a victory lap here in Round 4 with a thunderous knockout! Here's J.D. Here come the fighters to ring center to start Round 6 ... Holmes drives home a potent uppercut to the head of Shavers. Both of these guys look just like they came out of their dressing rooms - not a mark on them. Earnie Shavers slides into the corner ... Holmes fakes downstairs, then lands an uppercut under Shavers's chin. Holmes darts in and out, making himself a tough target. The fighters jockey for position as they both try to gain the advantage here in the 6th. Holmes gets in a hook to the body of Shavers. Shavers fires away but finds nothing but air. Holmes lands a brutal uppercut! Holmes lands a vicious cross! Shavers looks like he might have been hurt by that punch! A quick jab from Holmes connects. Holmes lands consecutive uppercuts to Shavers's midsection. Holmes connects with a nasty uppercut! Shavers is just looking for a place to fall after that shot! Holmes and Shavers exchange punches and the crowd roars its approval as Holmes got in the most telling blows. A solid hook drops Shavers on his back! Referee Ramos brings his arm down over Shavers as he begins the count ... 10! It's over!! Shavers has been iced! Holmes wins by a knockout! And here with the call is J.D. Round 12 Commentary
The bell sounds for the last round of the bout. A minute wasn't enough to eliminate or even significantly reduce Charles's swelling. Ezzard Charles has Holyfield pinned! Charles lets his hands go but his punches land on the arms of Holyfield. Holyfield catches Charles with an uppercut as he tries to duck. Holyfield is now holding on to Charles. He seems to be taking a breather. Referee Nelson is shouting at Holyfield to break! Charles is on his bicycle, moving from corner to corner forcing Holyfield to chase him. Both boxers go back to the middle of the squared circle. Charles retreats into the left corner. Holyfield wraps up Charles... Neither fighter will break ... Nelson separates the two fighters. Evander Holyfield scores to the body with a jab Charles fires a wild overhand right and misses everything. And there's the final bell! This fight's in the hands of the judges now ... The bell sounds for the 12th and final round of this fight. Johansson's corner men did their job with quiet efficiency and confidence. Johansson smothers Ruddock's attack with a clinch! Ref England pries them apart. Ruddock feints downstairs, then lands two quick blows to the head. A short hook to the head by Johansson. Ruddock picks off the cross by Johansson. Ruddock has dynamite in those fists and he lands a wicked hook downstairs! Johansson looks shaken! Johansson looks to have his legs back under him after that knockdown in the last round. It seems every shot Johansson takes on his right eye makes the swelling worse. That combination from Donovan Ruddock lands with some authority! Ruddock is really focused in this round but he made need a knockout to win the fight! Ruddock lands a devastating uppercut! Johansson looks stunned! Johansson scores with a nice right cross. Both fighters want to work inside for the moment, as Johansson blasts home a hook. Ruddock is holding Johansson tighter than most men do their wives -- or girlfriends!
