October 4th, 1883 - Cleveland vs. Philadelphia World Series Game 1
I'm going to try something a little different this time. I'm going to upload the game file first before posting the results. That way anyone who wants to watch the game can do so without knowing who will win ahead of time. I'm open to suggestions on how to implement this better, so that if you want you can just see the score. I'll post the game results tomorrow.

October 4th, 1883 - Cleveland takes Game 1 of World Series
October 4th, 1883 - Cleveland took advantage of the errors made my Philadelphia, while Philadelphia did not do the same, and that was the difference in this game as a great performance by Bobby Mathews goes spoiled. Mathews set the tone early by striking out the side in the first inning. Fred Dunlap led off the top of the second with an incredible triple to left. This got Mathews attention, as he promptly struck out the next 3 batters.
With 1 out in the bottom of the second, Ed Rowen ended up on second base after a single and an error in the outfield. He made it to third but got no further. The first run of the game came in the top of the fifth, when Crowley scored from second on a stolen base and ground out. Crowley was at second because of a base hit and a fielder's error. In the 6th inning, another error in the outfield allowed Bill Phillips to score off of a Pete Hotaling double. In the bottom of the sixth, the third baseman made back to back errors, but the Athletics failed to take advantage of it. In the top of the ninth, Mathews got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the score at 2-0, but a double play by A's batter Cub Stricker in the bottom of the ninth ended the game. Advantage Cleveland. |

October 6th, 1883 - All Square
October 6th, 1883 - The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Cleveland Blues 2-0 to set up a World Series Game 3 in Cleveland for the Championship. This time, Bobby Mathews got just enough support from his teammates to topple the Blues and starting pitcher Jim McCormick. Catcher Ed Rowen had a big day at the plate, going 4 for 5 with an RBI. But it was the Magical work of Bobby Mathews that won this game, as he held the Blues to 6 hits and no runs.

October 7th, 1883 - Cleveland Wins World Series, Champions for Third Straight Year
October 7th, 1883 - After an incredible season, Bobby Mathews finally met his match against the talented hitters of the Cleveland Blues. In the bottom of the fifth, Mike Muldoon hit a 430 foot solo homerun to left center, and that was the impetus the crowd and the Blues batters need to pile on 4 more runs for a 5-1 victory. Back to back triples in the sixth inning by Philips and Hotaling seemed to rattle Mathews and the Athletics. The Cleveland crowd came alive and never let up from that point on. Congratulations to the Cleveland Blues!

January 1st, 1884 - Doug Allison Retires
January 1st, 1884 - Long time league catcher Doug Allison has decided to retire today, after playing in the league from 1871 to 1879, with a brief return to Baltimore in 1883. He is a career .314 hitter, though his other totals are low due to only having 795 at bats. Doug played for the championship 1879 Providence Grays.
Doug was the first known player to use a glove, employing buckskin mittens in 1870 to preserve his hands. He was also one of the first catchers to move closer to the batter, rather than sticking to the common practice of standing 15-20 feet behind home plate. This technique severely limited baserunners stealing ability. We asked Doug what his plans are now that his baseball career is over. "I'm a pretty low key guy. I've been working for the U.S. Post Office, and I'll probably just continue to do that." Do you think Doug will make it in to the Hall of Fame? Last edited by guamyank; 07-12-2018 at 03:08 PM. |

February 1st, 1884 - Fleet Walker to be First African American Major Leaguer
February 1st, 1884 - The Toledo Blue Stockings of the Union Association bring with them Catcher Fleet Walker, which sets Fleet up to be the first African American to play in the major leagues. It is not expected that all players are going to welcome Fleet into the league with open arms. In 1883 the Blue Stockings played an exhibition game against the Chicago White Stockings. At first, White Stockings manager Cap Anson refused to play with Walker in the lineup. He eventually conceded when faced with the prospect of not getting his share of the gate receipts.
We'll be following Fleet closely throughout his 1884 campaign to see how things go. |

Yeah 1884 is tough. Plus if you use the Union Association its even tougher.
That's why i decided not to use the UA. Along with there's really no team that can challenge the Maroons. Im interested in seeing what Old Hoss does. Radbourn is 19-8 in mid July 1884 for me. I will switch providence to a 1 man rotation after releasing Sweeney. Other wise he has no shot at 59. Watch out for 1890 and i believe the 1892 seasons. After 1892 or 1893 its just 6 or 8 teams to worry about. |

June 1st, 1884 - Standings/Statistics
June 1st, 1884 - King Kelly has a hit in every game so far this year, and the Chicago White Stockings hold a 2 1/2 game lead in the National League. Buffalo led for most of May, but have slumped as of late. Cleveland is yet again in the thick of it, and the Philadelphia Quakers have climbed the ladder going 8-2 in their last 10.
There are a slew of good teams in the American Association this year, but it's currently the Athletics who hold the lead by 1 game over Toledo. In the Union Association, the Philadelphia Keystones cling to a 1/2 game lead over the St. Louis Maroons. So in all 3 leagues, the teams from Philly are doing very well! |

Meanwhile, in the Union Association, the Philadelphia Keystones still hold a 4 game lead over the St. Louis Maroons. Buster Hoover is batting .455 for the Keystones, and Harry Stovey has 14 homeruns.

August 1st, 1884 Standings/Statistics
August 1st, 1884 - I accidently had an interleague game scheduled between the Philadelphia Quakers and the Milwaukee Brewers. There's nothing I can do about it, the game will count. For the record, the Brewers won. It's a pain for me though because I have to manipulate the UA Standings image until the Brewers join the league for real and start to lose some games.
At any rate, the Chicago White Stockings are clinging to a 2 game lead over those pesky Cleveland Blues. Cap Anson has 20 home runs, and is having a homerun race with Philadelphia Keystones Harry Stovey of the UA, who currently has 19 homeruns. In the American Association, the Philadelphia Athletics continue to dominate thanks to yet another legendary year from starter Bobby Mathews (32-2 / 0.83 ERA). Mathews has an incredible WAR of 26.9 for the season. He also has 491 strikeouts. Toledo, at 4 1/2 games back, is really the only that has been able to pace the Athletics. In the Union Association, the red hot St. Louis Maroons have overtaken the Philadelphia Keystones, where they hold a 2 1/2 game lead. |

Did you switch Providence to Radbourn starting
all games or did you leave the rotation the same as the other teams? |
