Roster Expansion!

Only 3 games left for Indianapolis and they are not in contention for the playoffs, so we called up a bunch of their players. 11 of them. All of them have been with us before and are nothing to get excited about, but 2 have not been here yet: C Steve Jensen (24 R) and LF Dick McCay (27 R). The glut of players will at least give us more flexibility on how we lose games.....

If we can finish the season 28-0, we will make it to .500! 10-18 will keep us from 100 losses....

Portland Beavers (53-81 .396 25.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
Chicago Cubs (64-70 .478 16 GB in 6th place in the NL East)

Pete Reilly, Por (28 R 8-7 3.65 8.5-1.2-4.2-5.2 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Jose Colunga, ChN (23 R 0-5 5.04 11.2-2.2-2.9-5.0)

We have not faced Colunga before. You should have already known that, though, since he does not have a win....

Frank Wiginton grounds out to 2nd. Don Quinney beats out an infield hit. Rich Babbin lines a hit to center. We then pull off a double steal on the 1st pitch to Ernesto Gonzelez, who plops a hit to right center and both runners score! Gonzelez moves up to 2nd on the throw to the plate. 2 to 0, Beavers! Tim DePriest grounds a double down the 3rd base line! 3 to 0, Beavers! Mike Cavallaro flies out to center. 2 down. Rick Ferrell grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the 1st: John Godfrey works the count full and then takes ball four. Joe Gombos beats out an infield hit. Al Soto grounds into a 1-6-3 double play and Godfrey goes to 3rd. Larry Menard flies out to right!

Top of the 3rd: Rich Babbin leads off with a walk and goes to 2nd on a ground out. Tim DePriest reaches when 1B Tim Elliott drops a throw from 3rd. Mike Cavallaro singles and Babbin scores and DePriest goes to 3rd! 4 to 0, Beavers! Rick Ferrell grounds a hit to right and DePriest scores and Cavallaro goes to 3rd. 5 to 0, Beavers! Top of the 7th: With 2 outs, Steve Jensen gets his first major league hit with a double to left.

Bottom of the 7th: With 1 out, John Godfrey beats out an infield hit. P Pete Reilly then strikes out Joe Gombos, but indicates he is getting gassed. He has thrown 118 pitches. Call to the Bullpen: RHP Larry Castillo. Godfrey steals 2nd and then Al Soto bloops a hit to left and Godfrey scores. 8 to 3, Beavers.

Bottom of the 9th: With 2 outs, John Godfrey, who is quickly becoming one of my least favorite players, hits a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall. 8 to 4, Beavers.

Won - 8 to 4

We had 12 hits and made no errors.
The Cubs had 9 hits and made 3 errors.

Portland Beavers (54-81 .400 26.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at

On June 24, we lost, 6 to 5, in 10 innings when Day started. In 6 IP, he gave us 3 R, 5 H, 1 HR, 3 BB and had 3 SO.

8: LF Dan Beyeler (25 L .217-6-34-.637 in 313 AB)
9: P Ralph Day (35 R .222-0-4-.456 in 45 AB)

Game Start: 2:05 PM
Weather: 72 deg. Rain with a 10 MPH wind blowing in from center.

Frank Wiginton works the count full and takes ball four. Don Quinney swings at the first pitch and grounds into a 5-4-3 double play. Rich Babbin works the count full and takes ball four. Ernesto Gonzelez grounds out to short.

Bottom of the 1st: John Godfrey lines a hit to center. Jake Johnson flies out to left. Larry Menard flies out to right. Arturo Guerra grounds a hit to right and Godfrey easily makes 3rd. Tim Elliott grounds one to 2nd, but Mike Cavallaro makes a bad throw and Godfrey scores. E-4. 1 to 0, Cubs. That is Cavallaro's 1st error of the season, in his 39th start, so I guess we should not complain, but did it have to come with 2 outs and a runner on 3rd? Joe Gombos pops out to the catcher.

Top of the 2nd: Tim DePriest leads off with a line drive to center for a hit and Mike Cavallaro draws a walk. A passed ball sends them to 2nd and 3rd. Ivan Lopez grounds a hit up the middle and scores them both! 2 to 1, Beavers! Steve Jensen then hits a home run to left! 4 to 1, Beavers.

Bottom of the 2nd: Toby Bey leads off with a single. With 1 out, P Ralph Day reaches on an error by P Angel Rodriguez. E-1. With 2 outs, Jake Johnson hits a home run to left to tie the game at 4.

Top of the 3rd: After Rich Babbin leads off with a hit up the middle, the rain gets heavy and the umpires put a stop to play. 38 minutes later, we are back at it. Ernesto Gonzelez grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Tim DePriest grounds a hit up the middle. Mike Cavallaro doubles to left and both runners score! 6 to 4, Beavers! P Ralph Day is relieved. New pitcher: RHP Ed Anders. Ivan Lopez grounds a hit up the middle and Cavallaro scores! 7 to 4, Beavers!

Bottom of the 7th: CF Gene Clem leads off with a grounder to left for a hit. Get the Bullpen up! John Godfrey walks from a full count. Jake Johnson singles from a full count and Clem scores. 7 to 5, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: RHP Ron Beckman. Larry Menard pops out to 1st. Full count to Arturo Guerra and he takes ball four to load the bases. Tim Elliott grounds into a force at home, 4-2, but beats the relay to 1st. 2 outs. Pinch-hitter: LHB Melvin Hernandez. .229 with 2 home runs in 129 AB. Just the sort of hitter than will beat us.... He grounds a hit to right and 2 runs score to tie the game at 7. Toby Bey grounds out to short to end the inning.

Top of the 9th: Still tied at 7. New pitcher: RHP Garland Roop, their current closer. 16 SV 4.21 ERA. 25.2 IP, 29 H, 1 HR, 18 BB and 29 SO. Pinch-Hitter: LHB Jerry Alston. He walks. Pinch-Hitter: LHB Randy Penn. He lays down a good bunt and moves Alston over. They walk Frank Wiginton intentionally. Now my favorite tactic against the intentional walk is in order: the double steal. They go! Throw is hight o3rd and Alston is safe! Full count to Don Quinney and he walks to load the bases up with 1 out. Now our favorite tactic for killing innings is in order: the GDP. Rich Babbin strikes out. Ernesto Gonzelez grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Drats....

Bottom of the 9th: New Pitcher: RHP Larry Castillo. Jake Johnson leads off with a home run to left center. Ballgame....

Lost - 8 to 7

We had 8 hits and made 2 errors.
The Cubs had 9 hits and made no errors.

Angel Rodriguez went 6 innings, allowed 6 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 2.
RHP Ron Beckman went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 1 hit and 1 walk.
RHP Larry Castillo (L 2-1) faced 1 batter and gave up a home run.

Ralph Day went 2.1 innings, gave us 7 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he scored a run.
RHP Garland Roop (W 5-2) went 1 inning, gave us 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out 1.

Through 3 innings, Ricketts, who averages less than 2 walks per 9 innings has walked 3. He only lasted 3 innings in his last start and walked 4. That is 7 walks in his last 6 innings. What is up with that?

Top of the 5th: With 1 out, Keith Redlin singles to left and Roy Harrington homers to left. 4 to 0, Reds.

Lost - 11 to 4

The 9th inning was a bit of a mess....

He is an excellent fielder, too. If he was not 32, I would be tickled pink with him as my first baseman. At least against righties. As is typical of all of our left-handed hitters (and switch-hitters, too), he cannot hit lefties much at all. Of course, none of our right-handed hitters can hit lefties OR righties.... SS Rick Ferrell had 2 hits and a walk and scored a run. C Steve Jensen had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. PH Rich Doody drew a walk. PH Joe Hartin drew a walk.

We are in the City by the Bay to face manager George Harper (61) and his Giants in a 3-game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games here with the Expos. We are 2-9 against them on the season and split 2 games in Portland the last time we met, July 23-24. Every series we play now is the last time we will face anyone this season. They are 7th in the NL in scoring with 4.5 runs per game (Portland is #16 (last) with 3.6). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 3.7 per game (Portland is #12 with 4.5). Their pitchers are the stingiest in the league when it comes to free passes to first.

Portland Beavers (56-84 .400 25.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
San Francisco Giants (81-59 .579 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the NL West)

We are 1-1 against Putnam on the season. In 2 starts, he is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA. In 11.1 IP, he has given us 6 R, 9 H, 2 HR, 5 BB and has 6 SO. All 6 runs, came in one start, however. In the other start, he shut us out for 7 innings on 2 hits and 2 walks, but did not get the decision.

Random Fact of the Week: We need hitters! And it does not look like there will be much to choose from in the free agent class this off-season. No point in signing old farts when we are trying to build up from the basement and none of the younger players look like the types of fellas I want on the team. The good hitters cannot field and most are not pleasant personalities. I absolutely HAVE to upgrade our infield, though, one way or another!

C John McIvor (remember him?) is ready to try to play, so he was activated from the Disabled List. He has been out since May 19. He is undoubtedly our best catcher, but we will play him sparingly for a while to get the rust off. The minors are shut down, so we cannot send him on a rehab assignment. I also do not want him to get hurt again, because I plan to try to trade him this off-season. I do not have a lot of hope of anyone giving us anything, but I still want to try.

Portland Beavers (58-87 .400 26.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
Colorado Rockies (72-73 .497 12.5 GB in 5th place in the NL West)

Angel Rodriguez, Por (23 R 5-7 5.22 8.9-1.3-4.4-5.2 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Greg Douglas, Col (26 R 3-4 6.31 10.8-1.6-3.7-5.3)

On June 16, we lost to Douglas, 10 to 4, here in Denver. In 5.1 IP, he gave us 4 R, 7 H, 2 BB and had 5 SO.

I am loathe to send poor Angel out their today at Coors, but who else can I use? Billy Rueter? He is the one who lost to Douglas last time. Ricky Chase? Steve Mulder? They all stink....

We are in St. Louis to play a 4-game series with manager Eddie Cape (59) and his Cardinals, beginning with a double header today. They just swept the Diamondback in 3 games at Phoenix. We are 6-4 against them on the season, but lost 2 games in Portland the last time we met, August 27-28. They are 6th in the league in runs scored with 4.6 per game (Portland is #16 (last) with 3.6). They are 7th in runs allowed with 4.1 per game (Portland is #11 with 4.4).

No game today, but OF Lebron Williams is ready to play, so he was activated from the Disabled List. Just in time, since his replacement had just gotten hurt! The Meister is still mum on Don Quinney.
